SI.com names Jay Glazer sports media Person of Year

glazer.jpgThe good news: Long-time SportsWatch/WatchDog reader/supporter Richard Deitsch of SI and SI.com did an excellent job with his year-end sports media awards and his roundup of memorable sports media moments from 2007.

(No, I'm not just saying that because he named WatchDog a tri-winner in the "Mainstream Sports Media Bloggers of the Year" category. But it helped.)

The bad news: Next week when I name my sports media award winners for 2007, it's going to look like I stole several of them from Deitsch. Such as . . . Verne Lundquist!

Click below for a completely off-topic story about Jay Glazer, Deitsch's choice for sports media Person of the Year.

Back in June of 2006, as I read about Jay Glazer's wedding in Vermont, which was attended by Michael Strahan, Tiki and Ronde Barber, Brian Urlacher and John Fox, I relayed to my wife the interesting news that Rabbi Panken had married Jay.

That would be Melinda Panken, the former rabbi at our local synagogue.

This news stunned Mrs. WatchDog, as she had no idea Glaze and Rabbi Panken were dating, and thought Jay had been dating Michelle Graci, a model, actress and former Miss New Jersey.

Twas a misunderstanding. I meant that Rabbi Panken had married Jay, as in officiated at the ceremony, not that she had married him herself.

Never mind. Thanks for reading. It's the kind of story that is more interesting when spoken than written.

(Update: Mrs. WatchDog reminds me I got this story completely backward and she was the one who informed me about the Panken-Glazer nuptials and I was the one stunned. I regret the error. Mrs. WatchDog says I need to get more sleep. This is what happens when you get up at 4 a.m. to follow Warner Wolf around.)

Congrats on your mention there, Neil.

I am the lucky man who actually did marry Rabbi Melinda Panken (and attended Jay and Michelle's wedding) and I have a story for you. In 2006 I caused many puzzled looks by stating, "The woman I married in April married my brother in July." If the person didn't get it after a few moments I would clarify..."my wife is a rabbi and she performed my brother and sister-in-law's wedding ceremony in July."
