The official attendance of 15,233 for Wednesday night's Knicks-Nets game - there were fewer people than that actually in the seats - was a shocker that speaks to both the declining fortunes of the Knicks and the challenges that face the Nets in the Jersey swamps.
They're not the only ones. The Devils are averaging under 15,000 fans for their games at the new Prudential Center, where an official crowd of only 4,327 - many disguised as empty seats - showed up for the final of a college basketball tournament featuring Tennessee and Texas Nov. 24.
That same night at Madison Square Garden, 18,200 showed up for a hockey game between Cornell and Boston University, and scalpers were commanding some nice premiums outside the arena.
I have to write my Friday newspaper column now.

If they want to fill up the seats in the Rock and the Swamp, they should put Scarlett Johansson in a hoops uniform and let her on the court :-)
Do my eyes deceive me, Neil? Is that indeed Scarlett?
Don't worry, hockey attendance picks up around Christmas. Friday night's game will sellout, and the Devs should be up to 16,000 by season's end.
When I talked to the owner about all this before The Rock opened, he was hoping for a lot higher average than 16,000 for this season.
Thank you for posting the pic of Scarlett, Neil. I'll leave you alone, now.

HOLY CRAP! I can't believe this.
Neil, not bad. Sneak in one of the red dress ;-) I too will leave you alone.
