Earl Warren was a really big Mets fan, as it turns out
I watched the last couple of innings of Game 4 of the '69 Series (see below).
Seconds before the climactic play, Tony Kubek was in the stands interviewing Chief Justice Earl Warren. If a network tried that today, people like me would rip them for losing focus on the game at hand.
Back then there were no regular sports media critics, though.
Also, Floral Park got a mention in the bottom of the 10th, just before hometown boy Pete Richert made the game-losing error for the Orioles.

Even better than the Earl Warren interview in Game 4 was Kubek's one on one with Jerry Lewis in Game 3. Jerry was sitting next to Jackie Onasis and John Jr. as Tony heard all about Jerry's long time friendship with Gil Hodges. At one point, the fans started yelling at Jerry to sit down, to which he responded by using his nutty professor voice to tell them to knock it off. All the while, Jerry's very large 35mm camera dangling around his neck. Jerry also had this groovy late 60's goatee which contrasted very nicely with his oiled back hair. As soon as they cut back to the booth for the game, Ed Kranepool hit his homerun. Then, in a sign of things to come, instead of showing the Mets congratulate Kranepool in the dugout, they isolated Jerry working his camera as John John stood and cheered. Unfortunately, when SNY shows Game 3, they cut that part out.
Holy cow. John, you need to take over this job from me.
Great job- I would love to see video of that!
Thank you Neil. If you get any phone calls or emails from those "media goliaths desperate for content" let them know that there's an underpaid teacher with all sorts of useless knowledge that's available.
PS - If you read this Mike, I'll try playing around with YouTube and see if I can post that clip. My lawyer friends tell me it's public domain due to its age, although I'm afraid MLB might disagree. Anyway, check out You Tube in a few weeks to see if I can post it.
