Looks like WFAN won't be taking ESPN 1050's recent bolstering of its news operation standing still.
Mike Francesa and Chris Russo announced yesterday that former Newsday and current Sports Illustrated baseball writer Jon Heyman will be appearing on the show regularly.
It's no coincidence that Heyman has spent the past five years contributing to ESPN 1050, including his recent reports on Joe Torre's departure and A-Rod's opt-out.
The hosts said they would have another announcement Monday. It figures to be a bigger name than Heyman, but I don't have that name for you . . . yet.
(Heyman is my third SI-related post of the day. This is a really weird job.)

Heyman is first rate. This is a very good pick-up. Francesa and Russo came across very poorly during the Torre episode. Francesa got extremely nasty concerning Levine and Hank S. and Russo is a clown and Yankee hater with no real knowledge about anything. He has no sources and just flies by the seat of his pants. If you watch the two on YES, Russo is reading newspapers during the show, proving he knows nothing based on his own research/digging. He is a disgrace.
Neil-
Was any of this done to appease SI? I can't imagine they liked having one of their own on ESPN radio, especially when you consider the battle over writers that those two have been fighting recently.
so is he done reporting on Kay's show?
I bet Peter King will be next week's announcement.
Next week's announcement will be Peter King as weekly guest.
Sounds like an alliance between WFAN and Sports Illustrated. Could Dan Patrick be coming soon?
Neil-
If you need another SI-related post, I'd be more than happy to forward my five favorite Newsday writers (past and present).

I gotta tell ya: I hated Heyman when he wrote for Newsday, but his column on SI is really Awesome. Maybe it's b/c he stopped sucking up to the Mets
Peter King could be a possibility, but it might also be the addition of a new affiliate or two for Mike and the Dog. I recall hearing that they weren't planning to stop at Albany and Tampa.
The other thing is that supposedly the show would air in HD if/when WFAN moves to new studios in Manhattan (as long rumored). YES already produces some of the remotes in HD... but maybe they will go all-HD soon.
Best, where is story for Lou? You did Gelb. Only true fandroids would know Gelb.
Maybe they're going to have Kim Jones join them - there's a woman who really knows her sports, is charming, funny and computer literate (neither Mike or Chris is).
It is really a waste of her time to have Kim on at 5AM with that horrible music and grouchy Chris Carlin who is awful.
Go F yourself again
hey neil can you explain what happened to kay and heyman? im sure kay doesnt like this.
Guys,
FAN knows they're losing Girardi to 1050. They also know they're not getting LoDuca to be more eloquent than Screech in the AM once a week.
AND they're going to be KILLED in the AM once the I-Man returns. Norman and the Cartoon are TOAST.
SO... Chernoff -- Yes, the same guy that hired mensa members Roberts, Malusis, Russo, Egosian, and Cartoon!!!! -- is trying to beat ESPN at their own game.
Problem?
The Skipper and Gilligan are LAZY.
True, they're a great revenue source for this station. BUT they can't grow an audience. Their demo is dead, dead, dying. And still spending a lot of bucks (apparently on meth addiction, some tax guy called the Nunz, Mike's Sports Bar in your basement, and so on...)
Who do they have that can grow an audience?
Maybe Carlin and Kim?!
NOT Norman and Cartoons in the Morning. NOT "Oh She's Hot" with Busty Roberts and Benigno. NOT the Schmooze...
Anyway, you take my point: Chernoff -- and the station -- is in big trouble. Their main rev stream is GONE and, more importantly, THE COMPETITION...
Heyman's pretty good (once you get past his voice) as long as he's not promoting his buddy Bobby Valentine who never won anything in this country and ran the biggest drug house in Texas (which Heyman never acknowledges). Could the Monday announcement be a move to SNY or MSG?
Why isn't Girardi signing with the fan to do weekly spot like torre did, like willie does, like bobby v did?
Jeff: Girardi was Kay's broadcast partner. He goes with the people he trusts. I'm not surprised Heyman left ESPN1050, he probably was ordered to by SI. Big deal about Peter King he's on just about every program and sports station not run by ESPN in the country. Hopefully it's something else.
Heyman's a joke. He's the classic sportswriter with lots of access who just "says things" and since he has a column many people think he's right. The next time he uses a statistic in an intelligent way will be the first.
He'll fit right in with M&MD's shoot first, look it up later policy.
At least he's better than Wally Mathews - who just says things and has NO access. Is there a worse columnist in New York than Mathews? He truly is a joke. How does Newsday justify having him in their pages?
Our man Best does more research and has more access than all of them put together and according to him he never even leaves the basement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Keep up the great work Neil!
The big announcment will be that Mike and the angry puppy will be on the IMUS Show 12/3.
I have my sources
maybe the announcement is that m&md will be following imus to abc. ha ha.
A source from mikefrancesa.com declares that it will be Joe Girardi signing up to do a weekly spot on the Mike and the Mad Dog Show.
The Unauthorized Mike and the Mad Dog Message Board and Blog
Anyone that says ESPN radio is any competition to the FAN has rocks for brains.
FraudDog on Imus' first show?! What happened to standards and practices?!
Would the I-Man be scraping the barrel so soon into his tenure?!
