Synchronized skating means grace, athleticism and gel

hockettes1956.jpgIn my newspaper column today I recommend HBO's documentary on the Ohio State vs. Michigan rivalry, but naturally one of the most remarkable things about Michigan athletics is its breadth.

In 1992 I covered the entire run of the Wolverines' Fab Four in the NCAA Tournament. Now it turns out Michigan hockey also has played a role in my sports life.

Synchronized skating - then known as precision skating - was invented at Michigan, where the "Hockettes'' performed at hockey games starting in the mid-1950s.

Now my daughter participates in the sport. It's kind of like synchronized swimming, only on ice. Like synchronized swimming, keeping hair in place is a big thing.

Her team had hair practice over the weekend. No, really. Here's part of the memo:

Skaters should arrive with: 1. Detangled/clean/dry hair to work with. 2. Hair brush and comb. 3. Two hair ties. 4. Hair spray or hair gel.

Wow. There's nothing about anything like that from Bo or Woody on HBO tonight.

Wowie. Synchronized skating sounds really cool. Hair practice must be a blast. Can the hairspray be sparkley? :)
