News flash: Tom McCarthy leaves Mets for Phils
Thanks to our friends at MetsBlog.com, I just learned that WFAN's Tom McCarthy is returning to Phillies coverage after two solid years of work on Mets games opposite Howie Rose.
Here is the official release on the Phillies' Web site.
Tom was a welcome addition to the New York sports media roster. Good luck back in Philly and in your future endeavors, sir.

As a Phillies fan, the Mets loss is definitely the Phillies gain. Kalas will probably retire in a couple of years and Franzke is nothing special. This really solidifies the play by play rotation. Now if we only get Matthews to disappear.
I'll miss him with Howie. I have to admit though, I still thought it was Gary Cohen announcing when McCarthy was on.
Really?
People liked McCarthy?
He exhibited no knowledge of baseball beyond the very, very basics; he has no "Met history" a la Howie or Gary; and he is bland as toast. When Howie towers over you, personality-wise, man you're melba toast with no butter...
I won't miss him, in fact I won't even notice he's gone!
I guess the NL East title wasn't enough for the Phillies?
Ed Coleman deserves the job if he wants it and Phillyfans got really lucky because Chris Wheeler isn't doing p-b-p on tv anymore.
Do you think Tom still resents that they took an inning away from him on radio during the 2006 playoffs to use the true voice of the Mets, Gary Cohen, to do an inning (still wonder if this was the team's decision or WFAN)...
As a matter of fact, perhaps they can take a leave from the Los Angeles National League baseball team...when the big games come up on network television, they have no problem using Vin Scully in place of Charley Steiner (wouldn't you?) but at other times when Scully is working, simulcast the first 3 innings and then allow Charley Steiner to pick up the play by play for the remainder of the game....Perhaps that's the direction the Mets should go, do a simulcast for the first 3 innings of every game on SNY and then allow Rose to finish the game working with one of the color people they employ at the desk or split Darling and Hernandez, one on radio with Rose and one on television with Cohen and when SNY is not doing a game, use Cohen and Rose....seems to me that's the best team and a true Met broadcasting team.
(Hopefully they're not considering Suzyn Waldman as a replacement)...
I would hope Eddie C is front runner for job. He lost out the last time and he should get a shot. Then WFAN can name a new mets beat reporter.
Best, Mcarthy was so upset you didn't call Chernoff for us he left town.
Hey Barney,
I hate you. Tell IMUS to pluck those disgusting eyebrows.
Sincerely,
Barney is Deranged
I personally can't stand Eddie C. He's not on top of things at all as the Mets beat reporter. Always the last one to get "the scoop". Okay announcer but I want a new voice. I also was bored of McCarthy. He had the worst HR call ("He can't get it!") and would always paint the picture of a play after it happened. I'm guessing Ian Eagle or Kevin Burkhardt will be front-runners for the job and Eddie C. as the back up. I hope the Mets look into minor league announcers to find the next Gary Cohen though.
The marriage between Tom McCarthy and the Mets probably ended when they let Gary Cohen team up with Howie in the playoffs on the radio and not him. That and every Phillies announcer sans Harry Kalas stinks. Chris Wheeler's behavior down the stretch last season was totally unbearable and classless.
I'd rather Howie Rose keep to a very limited Mets radio role until about June or so. Isn't that when the Stanley Cup finals could end?
you have got to be kidding me! tom left because cohen did an inning during the playoffs? he left, he said because of "the length" of the contract. I bet the $$$, too. why do you think cohen left radio to go to tv? $$$$.

Thank you, Nick. Let's be real...Tom didn't leave because Gary did one inning duirng the playoffs. That's absolutely ridiculous! Its about a lot more money and he will be doing TV too.
The Mets should give Ed Coleman the job, provided that they reduce tickets prices by one dollar each time he says "I don't disagree"

Bob Huessler being even brought up for this job just makes me gag! I hate his voice, he's such a homer but also a total Debbie Downer who has to be the worst representative of Mets fans on WFAN, and lets remember this is the same station of Craig Carton/Joe Beningo/Evan Roberts. You-slur (Russo pronunicaton) and Richard Neer need to be launched off this planet on spaceship! Such non-radio personalities.

Dear Lord. Tom McCarthy is horrible. He's so annoying. He constantly blathers on and on about things unrelated to THE GAME TAKING PLACE. Just call the game you idiot. I can't believe he signed a 5 year contract. Great.
Take him back Zoo York! He is the worse. Pay him off and send him back on the circle line. He doesn't know when to SHUT UP!!
