I have an idea: Let's raise the legal drinking age to 47

drunk%2520fan_0.jpgTurns out leaving early and being overrun by Steelers fans (see post below) are the least of Jets fans' problems . . . either that, or it turns out there is a good reason for the sane/sober fans to want to leave early.

As I suggested in my newspaper column Sunday, and as anyone who has been to a major sports event in the past 25 years or so knows, the biggest turnoff for fans who are grownups - especially those with children - is the fact drunk 22-year-old males have taken over stadiums and their parking lots.

Here's another, eye-opening illustration of this dispiriting issue.

In this case, I do not apologize for linking to a competing paper. It takes a village to raise these idiots. So we're all in it together.

Mr. Mushnick, Please return the blog to Mr. Best. Thank you.

I saw that. Very disheartening. By the way, I think Newsday has a piece on it now, so you don't have to link to The Competition...

Yo, Jon:
Phil has made some very good points about sports and society over the 25 years he has written his column in the Post, and this subject is one of them.

It happens every year with the Jets, especially later in the year when season ticket holders are fed up with the team and the travel to the Swamp ... so the tickets end up in the hands of idiots.
Happened more at Shea Stadium, where there were legendary fights in the upper deck that started in row T and ended in the box seats ... and of course who can't forget the fires in the open end zone bleachers?

Welcome back Neil, I`ve read Mushnick for some years now. As a someone in the Male/18-35 demographic, it gets a little tiring listening to him. We get the point. You hate wrestling, night football games, my demographic and guys who don't hustle to first base. Yet I keep reading, so I guess he wins.

Jon,
I'm doing my best with my column and blog to strike a balance between being part of old media/old demo and tapping into new media/younger demo.

Stick with me!

Neil,

You're doing a great job tapping into the younger demographic. But I'm 36. So, what do I know?

I used to think 36 was old.

Hey, I love your blog. The whole media in sports relationship in facinating sometimes. As long as you don't rip Clyde Frazier's performace as a Knicks broadcaster, I'm tame!

Since I have your ear, what's the deal with Julie Donaldson being let go? She goes and Seth Everett stays? Terrible move by SNY. I hope she gets something better.

I'm not aware of anything scandalous regarding Julie or anything. I guess it was just a performance issue.

Neil, excellent as always.

I'm 29 and I never understood the lunkhead drunks I see at every game. What is it with everyone?

Why does everyone complain about how high the ticket prices are yet they seem willing to pay any amount of money for a beer.

The sad part is a lot of these idiots actually drive home.

Tell me again, please, is the game better when viewed through inebriated eyes? And, what gives half the people at these games the right to behave like imbeciles? Yelling, screaming, cursing...that's all part of a game. But the drinking has gotten out of hand.

Do people go to a game to get drunk or watch the contest? When you all figure this out, let me know.

Being a long-ago collegiate convert from Jets fan to Bills fan, I will forever pray that I don't miss the first two syllables of the Ralph variation on the downstate chant:

J-E-T-S- SUCK SUCK SUCK!

Otherwise, my sick mind is going to replace those first two letters with a consonant and vowel inspired by this article.

Go to youtube and search Gate D and Jets to see the visual. (Thanks to thebiglead.com)

Does Alanis Morrissette need new lyrics for "Ironic" if there were clowns in #28 jerseys at Gate D instead of watching Curtis Martin get honored at the same time?

Here's one Jets video you won't see on SportsNet New York.

Why do it at Giants Stadium when Satin Dolls aka the Bada Bing is just an errant Pennington pass away up Route 17?

Funny, didn't see a thing about this on SNY.
Wonder why?
Guess they're not the guys in the white hats.

the Jets encourage the low class activity at Gate D by their displaying of the raunchy and offensive "Flight Crew". How can the Jets possibly say they condemn this behaviour when they have woman bumping and grinding on the field, wearing Jets uniforms!

Not saying I condone the behavior, but it happens at Giants games too.
