Craig Carton urges Newark kids to put down weapons

PH2006042501999.jpgSinorice Moss of the Giants was on the radio this morning with Craig Carton and Boomer Esiason in an appearance arranged through the American Dairy Association.

Moss was on his way to telling Newark elementary school students of the importance of consuming milk, cheese and yogurt regularly.

To which Carton responded, "While you're there suggest they put the guns down, too. A little dairy is good, but no more guns, ya?"

Responded Moss: "Exactly."

I'm certainly no expert on post-Imus political correctness and how it applies to urging 8-year-olds to put down their guns. But I do know Carton - not surprisingly - has walked some fine lines since starting at WFAN Sept. 4, and it often makes Esiason squirm.

At least it sounds like he's squirming; it's radio.

If Barry Melrose of ESPN had to apologize to Newark for urging people to watch their wallets there, what about Carton's crack?

This kind of stuff is why the Giants have been reluctant to put their coaches or players on the show as guests.

Neil,

Great work as always. We wouldn't have known about this had you not reported it because NOBODY listens to the worst show in WFAN history excepting, of course, your good self.

And as troubling as The Cartoon's comments were, Norman's assertion that he "knows a lot about squirming because, you know, he's squirmed before. He, after all, played professional football" was a much needed tonic.

I just don't think we -- as a culture -- get enough of the self-aggrandizing, empty-headed posturing that Egosian provides.

Equally, Cartoon's always offensive, seldom insightful rants about topics he seems to know NOTHING about really do help me to start my day off right.

Actually, now that I think about it, just about the only thing better than Egosian and the Cartoon in the Morning would be Joe and Screech's lengthy, misogynistic, deeply offensive exchanges about "hot" 13-year-olds.

Sick, sick, sick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No doubt about it, bro!

Are Mlerose and Carton making things up?

Newark is a hellhole. it is a slum. it is violent and dangerous.

The truth shouldnt be ignored.

the above article that just came out proves Carton's point:

On the bottom of the scale, Detroit, Mich., took the dubious honor of most dangerous city, while Camden held its place at number 5. Newark saw its ranking go from the 22nd most dangerous city to number 20.

Yo, Bo: Watch it, I was born in Newark!

Edgy morning sports talk radio wow what concept!

where is les moonves?

Wow, that wacky morning crew. zzzzzzzzzz

Thanks Neil,

I too was Born in Newark NJ. I don't know how Cartons comment was too over the line. But to his Newark listeners it does sound rather disparaging.

If Imus said that he would be applauded by Millions. But then he doesn't pander to any group and truly doesn't care if someone attacks him for saying something that is obvious.

I too don't listen to that loser Station. But in 13 days we won't much care. Boomer and Craig will.

Thanks Neil. Your the best.

My sister (NJIT grad) once got pulled over at 2am in Newark for stopping at a red light. Cop told her to look both ways and go.

Jon, that's an inspiring story. I'll never go to Newark at 2 a.m. again.

I wish I could say that people would vote Boomer and Carton off with their radio tuners, and this would all go away, but apparently ratings were high for CC at NJ 101 and so there's no reason to think they won't be at WFAN... To quote Charlie Brown, 'Good Grief!'

Newarkers are very tired of mindless slander from people who don't know what they're talking about. NJIT is in Newark, and thousands of people attend it for four years apiece without serious incident. For 7 years I have driven at all hours of day and nite in various parts of Newark and never had a problem. I have walked at various times of nite in areas from the Ironbound (far to the east) to Downtown to Vailsburg (all the way to the west) without incident. I've published over 1,700 fotos on the "Newark USA" fotoblog from all over the city, taken day and nite. And people can see the truth from those fotos, even if they can't get into town to see for themselves. But, thanks to the Arena, lots of people ARE now seeing for themselves. And what they see is very different from what they've been told.

There are bad blocks in Newark, as in any big city, but NJIT isn't near any of them. Racists who know to hide their bigotry behind coded discussions about 'violence' or 'crime' are fooling no one. Newark is NOT a "hellhole", tho some people can make even Beverly Hills or Park Avenue into their own personal hell thru drugs, which are the source of the great preponderance of such crime as does afflict Newark -- as they afflict every major city. Newark overall is NOT a slum, tho there are individual blocks and buildings for which the term "slum" is, alas, appropriate. We're working to fix that.

Good people want good things for other people. Bad people delite in others' problems, and do not content themselves with speaking the truth about hard problems but exaggerate those problems beyond recognition, out of malice. Still, over 200,000 people have in the past month alone attended events at the Arena without suffering a single crime. The Newark-slanderers are going to have to step up the lies and increase the volume, because the truth is getting out, and slanders on the Internet don't jibe with the Newark that people have seen with their own eyes. Too bad for the liars that eyes trump lies every time.

Do only black people live in Newark? Are all gun-toting thugs black? Are there any black people who aren't murderous lowlifes? I guess not since every criticism of a city or region because of its crime rate is "racist" and every black criminal is a victim of racial inequalities within their ghetto (all blacks are from the ghetto, don't 'cha know).

Hey Neil, the truth hurts sometimes, doesn't it? I find their morning show to be funny and different, nothing wrong with that. Just because the show has a Jet fan and former Jet hosting it shouldn't get you so upset, we all know you are a die hard Giants fan. Your Jet disdain is obvious, always taking your "cracks" at them whenever possible. Here's to a Giant collapse!

Did someone tell you about my Tiki Barber sheets and Michael Strahan jammies? Darn it, I was trying to keep that a secret!

Happy Thanksgiving Neil

Enjoy the day and the football games. Green Bay Wins, Jets Lose and Indianopolis is a toss up.

Have good one.

Free speech vs. Political Correctness

I'll take political correctness. Carton has no right to create a joke about the fine Newark public school system.

I'm kinda leaning towards the idea of replacing the First amendment with the Political Correctness board and its associated correct and approved speech.

The problem with free speech is that a joke can hurt someone's feelings. We face enough crisis' in America right now to further implode with the affliction on one's thought processes.

Neil, you're so right in pointing out this dereliction of responsibility of this "shock" jock. I'd like to appoint you as a board member for the new First Amendment. There's just too many risks to allowing one to have this free speech.
