After this I'm SO not writing about NFL Network anymore

enberg5.jpgOK, one more NFL Network post, darn it:

For those without the channel in their homes, the obvious alternatives tonight are a sports bar or the home of a friend or relative who has it. I'm leaning toward the former.

Keep this in mind, though: The cost of the two pints of an adult beverage I likely would consume while watching said game will be more than the cost per subscriber for the NFL Network for an entire year (about $8.40).

(Reminder/disclaimer: Don't drink and drive!)

Comcast is the only cable company that carries the NFL Network. Its customers theoretically can order the sports tier on which the channel is found at the current discount price of $1.99 per month and then cancel it at their leisure.

I also have heard from several Comcast customers with high def that they have been getting the channel even without paying for the sports tier, an apparent loophole that violates the company's agreement with the NFL.

The game can be heard on WFAN, with Dick Enberg handling the call, as well as on Sirius Satellite Radio, which has the national feed and both teams' local stations.

Finally, NFL.com and NFL Mobile on Sprint will have live "look-ins" at 15 and 45 minutes after each hour as well as select action when a team is inside the opponent's 20-yard line.

OK. I'm done now. I have a newspaper column to write. Enjoy the ACC women's basketball preview show on FSNY at 3 p.m.

This is greed by the NFL.
Everyone expects the NFL to eventually make the SuperBowl pay-per-view and force fans who have made it the most popular sport in the world to pay even more. The NFL network is the beginning of that plan and may be the beginning of the end. Instead of a record number of viewers for a Thursday night they instead just have angry fans.
They will find out when they restrict access to the sport we will find another one just like boxing has.
Don't blame cable it's the NFL wanting more, more , more.

And don't forget Verizon FiOS TV has the game and the network...and it's not on any special sports tier. It's part of the regular package. And Verizon has it on its broadband Internet service, too. FiOS...it's a beautiful thing.

This is cable greed, these guys are demanding an equity position in NFL Networks. Not since the mob infiltrated NYC has an organization been so audacious...

Rutgers vs. Louisville
Rangers vs. Islanders
Celtics vs. Knicks
Football on the radio
Mastercards? Priceless

with all this talk about the NFL network, it got me wondering....have you ever written about the NHL Network? As an Islanders fan stuck in Alabama, I am limited in how often I can see them (in Atl., on Versus), but last night I was fortunate enough to be able to watch NHL On The Fly on the NHLN (my wife was Christmas shopping online, so I could watch whatever I wanted). Anyway, I tuned in in time to see the Ottawa Scoring update, which gave me close to a minute of game action leading up to the tying goal late in the 3rd. Then, I was able to catch THE ENTIRE shootout. It came on the heels of watching the entire Caps-Panthers shootout, which was equally as entertaining as the Isles.

I know the NHLN is probably very limited in its viewership, but from the looks of it, I would be suprised if hockey fans didn't take a strong liking to it.

On a side note, does MSG have any ownership in the NHLN? Reason I ask is because they had a ton of post-game interviews from the Sabres and Devils games, both of which were broadcast by MSG, and also did some bottom-line advertising for shows on MSG. Just curious.

Bigfroe: I wrote the main item in my newspaper column on the NHL Network in the editions of Friday, Nov. 23. It's on our Web site!

I am not aware of any MSG ownership stake in the network.

thanks for the heads-up. was out of pocket last weekend and did not read newsday online at all, and after watching the giants suck against the vikes, didn't feel the need to go back and read the previews for what i know was a bad game.

on another note, do you know anything about the MLB Network? When will that be a go? Will it face the same challenges as NFLN?

It's a go in '09. It will not face the same problems as NFLN because it gave pieces of itself to DirecTV and Big Cable.
