Mike Francesa and Chris Russo take on Yanks on YES
I just got back from hanging out in downtown Newark with the Devils' owner - no, really - and am catching up on stuff while I wait for YouTube to get some Chris Russo on Letterman video from last night.
Two observations:
1. This Torre guy seems poised and classy and smart and conducts a nice press conference. The Yankees should consider him for their managerial opening.
2. Say what you will about my old pals Russo and Mike Francesa, but you have to give the boys credit for their guts for colorfully ripping Yankees president Randy Levine - even spreading unsourced rumors about him! - while being simulcast on the YES Network.
Levine has been known to offer his input bluntly when it comes to Yankees coverage, so steam surely is rising from his ears listening to this. (Mike just called Levine "clueless.'' He called me that last week!)
Russo and Francesa also didn't hold back in ripping CBS Radio, which owns WFAN, during the Imus Affair.
Wow. I've never ripped the editor or publisher of Newsday in public. Yet.
UPDATE: Now Ian O'Connor is on with Mike and Chris to defend his journalistic credibility after an afternoon of unsubstantiated speculation from the WFAN boys regarding O'Connor's recent interview with George Steinbrenner. Incredibly strange stuff. Ian has been swearing on various stacks of bibles defending himself. Good radio, but also disturbing. I should have been a shoe salesman.

A little respect for the dead, Best. Larry "Bud" Melman died in March.

Yeah it's nice that they ripped Randy Levine today, but how about ripping the YES network for not airing the live Yankees press conference from yesterday. That was really a joke, how can you claim to be the Yankees network and not air the live press conference about one of the biggest days in the history of the team.Chris and Mike always seems to find a way to knock SNY, but how about they look in the mirror. It's funny that fans had to tune into 1050 ESPN radio to get the press conference and the breaking news about Torre turning down the job offer.
Bob: How am I being disrespectful? I often post pictures of dead people.
Ferragamo: The press conference was not supposed to be on live. ESPN2 violated that agreement, angering the Yanks.
Sorry, Neil. You're right. I guess it's ok to post picture of dead people. I just wanted to make sure you knew he was dead. I loved Larry "Bud" Melman.
Thursday was a CONFERENCE CALL, not a press conference. There was no video, nobody was in the same room (outside of the Yankee brass who participated), and if you've ever been on either end of a conference call, you know it's not something that should be aired live.
As has been mentioned elsewhere, too many extraneous noises, lengthy pauses, etc. They're neither good radio nor good television.
So Neil, some quick thoughts on 'The Rock' before what I assume will be a column on it?
It's really, really, really big. And it smells like new carpets. I just sent in a column on it for Sunday. Jeff Vanderbeek seems like a nice guy.
He got $500 Million outta' Cablevision for the FSN deal, and ensured the Devils financial viability for the forseeable future. Good businessman (Seriously, $500 mill for the Devs?) and seems to want to do right by us.
Several years ago Mike and the Mad Dog used to rip Billy Beane and the "Moneyball" gang for not winning a playoff series. They didn't want to hear any "part random variation" from Michael Lewis. Now that Joe Torre has lost five out of the last six playoff series he managed they tell us "the playoffs are a crapshoot". Mike wasn't saying that before the Detroit ALDS in 2006 when he constantly said "I can not see the Tigers beating the Yankees". Torre may or may not deserved a two year contract. I don't think he did but I wouldn't yelp if he was. But his press conference was a display in classless whining about being insulted for only getting a minimum $5 million guaranteed surpassed only by mindless grovelling by The Knights of the Keyboard. Torre has joined the vast majority of rich entertainers
who think everything has to be given to them regardless of performance.
Hey, Jim
Did you watch or listen to Torre's press conference? Where was this whining you speak of?
Classless? You must've had a different station on. Joe was nothing but classy, honest, and entertaining. Same as throughout his entire run.
The Yankees made him an offer he couldn't accept. And he didn't.
Ask yourself, if your boss wants to give you a 30% pay cut despite outstanding work for the last 12 years, but says you can have the 30% back if you meet some hard-but-not-impossible incentive, how would YOU feel?
It all came down to Torre living in another zip code than us working shnooks, its not a common man who can turn down real $$. We just can't understand money being turned down like that.
Joe was a great guy, great with the media, great with the fans, great to most of his players (sans A-Rod dropping to 8th, oh yeah and Sheff did not seem to have a lot of love for him either), but let's get real. This was not chump change for a position that averages about $1.5 mill salary...
I would love to see how Joe would fare on a sub $100mill payroll.
As for Mike and the Mad Dog, not to plug another great TV columnist, but Mushnick had a classic must read column today (Monday 10/20), that exposes these two hacks.
I read Phil's piece. Found it effective and entertaining. I'm not ashamed to admit it!
