Imus fans: Your wait is almost over!

imus.jpgCitadel Broadcasting is close to finalizing a contract with Don Imus that would bring the controversial radio host back to the airwaves, a person familiar with the discussions said Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear on what station or stations Imus would be heard, but Citadel owns WABC in New York, making its morning slot a logical destination. (Citadel owns a number of other stations, including WPLJ-FM in New York.)

Currently that spot is occupied by Ron Kuby and Curtis Sliwa.

Citadel and its CEO, Farid Suleman, have been rumored to be interested in Imus for months, and WABC long has been considered a logical platform for him to launch a comeback.

He would bring along his long-time newsman, Charles McCord, who last appeared on WFAN Aug. 31. Less clear is what role, if any, a more controversial member of Imus' old crew, Bernard McGuirk, would play. One possibility is a non-speaking role as a producer/writer.

Imus was fired by CBS Radio and removed from WFAN April 12, eight days after making comments directed at the Rutgers women's basketball team that many regarded as sexist and/or racist. His show also had been simulcast on MSNBC.

Here come the comments!!!

Yay! Racist babble is back!

NHH Satire: The joke was an old white man talking "hip-hop".

NHH Satire: The joke was an old white man talking "hip-hop".

Can't happen quick enough for this nappy headed white women...remarks taken out of context, blown out of proportion, & by whom, the person who by all accounsts should be the least likely to cast the first stone, rev a sharptongue....some real news coming with a bite YEAH! BOYCOTTING MSDNC/media matters posterchildren....

There is a god!

Neil, you've made my day - Imus fans all over the country thank you! I'm going to email your story to fans so expect plenty of hits to your site.

Thanks, Mel. I'll take them!

Neil, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!

I just wish Imus was back at FAN so you could cover it. I couldn't get your paper today, so I got the NY Daily Snooze which mentioned nothing!!!

Tell me who to write to to throw you "a bone" and a raise!!

Love ya,
ML

You are "NEIL THE BEST"!
Thanks for breaking this, beating out the NYDN, NYP, NYT you beat everyone!

I knew there was magic in that basement of yours.

Stick with us. Any ideas who will be covering sports for Imus?

I was right, a lot of comments!
Neil, for all of your future posts, just add "Imus" in the title. You'll get all the clicks you desire.

The Fans are ready. The Base has increased almost two fold.

If he does go on WABC 770 in New York in the Curtis and Kuby time slot, they will make room for them at another time. They are very popular in the New York area. And I actually have listened to them on streaming Audio. They are very good.

But to maximize profits they need an "IMUS" to be placed in strategic markets in addition to New York.

Let us hope the official notice comes soon. We are standing on our heads.

Thanks Neil. Your the BEST.

Thank God! Thank you, Neil. It's great to know that "our long national nightmare" is almost over, just when I-fans were reaching our breaking point. Any news on a simulcast? I need to make sure I can get whatever channel Imus lands on.

Neil, you rock. Thank you for staying on this story and giving us the headsup.

...and I wonder what the moron at CBS radio who made this imbeclic decision will be thinking when the new Imus show kills the snooze fest they have given us from 6 to 10 weekday mornings.

WooHoo!

It's about time.

Mary Lynn,
Why go through a middle man and ask my boss to give me a raise? Wouldn't it be easier for Imus fans to send me money directly?

neil..

what is the number of your off-shore account? we - imus fans - will wire the money.

get a rock solid date.. you could become a rich man..

Very glad to hear that Imus and the gang are coming back. Cant happen quick enough for me. The whole firing debacle was disgraceful and I look forward to finally hearing the I-man's take on it. I hope everyone who was there before returns this time and they keep the conversations meaningful and free of BS, as I have come to expect. Thank you to Citadel and everyone on the show!

Best, I"ve been beating you up but this is great journalism.

Great reporting Neil. YOu have beaten everyone to the punch. For a guy who said he was done with this story, you rock!!

If its WABC, warner wolf will do sports. He's all ready there under contract and he was a member of the Imus crew for years. Neil, am i right?

Neil, you da man! Great news - any chance for a TV simulcast???

Hellllllll Yeahhh!!

It's about time!
Details, we need details..

OMG....I don't think I can wait....only hope we can get it....the mess on TV in the morning SUCKS!! Please tell me this is for real...I mean really real!!!
what they did to him was atrocious and unforgiveable.

Neil, is there a tv side?

Don Imus and I have had a nice rest. It will be good for him to be back and for me to be his top listener. He is my man. I love him.
I will also buy what he sells.
I havenot heard the stations (radio and TV) that screwed Mr. Imus.
Please give him my best regards.

Happy Days are hear again and to think this is on top of the news that Al is being investigated for not filing his tax returns for his charitable organization.

Good for Imus.
Good for McCord.
Good for Boinie, though his Bronx mouth probably won't be heard.
If Lou Rufino [engineer] comes over to 2 Penn he'll have to join NABET ...
Guess there won't be a tv side for now ...
though there's a cable network next door housed in a round building named after a square that may quite well be interested...
but that cable net doesn't like controversy.
Just ask Isiah.

This is a great news for Imus fans and for all of us who believe in free speech.

Neil,

Whenever anyone mentions Citadel and Imus the discussion always turns to WABC but they also own WPLJ

We all know the problems that WPLJ has had over the last few years. The theory that seems to carry the most interest is a Country format anchored in morning drive by Imus in the Morning. (Fox Business seems to be the leading candidate for simulcast although I still think Comedy Central is a better match). New York may be the only major media market without a country station and Imus is well respected in the Country Music Comunity (see http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/07/AR2007090700693.html) so this could be real. Love to know what you and your readers think.

Is this an early birthday present for Mr. Best? Happy Birthday Neil (tomorrow).

YIIIIPPPPPPEEEEEEE! Today is my birthday and what a great present!! I can't wait till Imus is back on the air!!!

Neil,

Your the man, You made my day. Thanks so much

Laree

Great news---finally!!!! Thank you Neil for being there for us. It's been a long, agonizing wait, but imagine how great it will be when we hear Imus again! Will miss Bernie though---that remains an injustice.

TERRIFIC NEWS!! No more TV Land reruns in the morning for me.

Jim Bunn

I can't wait for Imus to come back.

Best ditched us and returned. Best you are a good good guy.

Is lou going, Neil? He doesn't speak on Boomer/Carton.

Best needs to be regular on Imus show.

Neil,

Happy Birthday (Oct. 3) and just post an address!

WatchDog & Newsday fan forever,
Mary Lynn

Now if only Boomer and Carton would remain silent. Then maybe that show would be tolerable.

Dead Air > Boomer in the Morning

Good on Imus
NY radio won't help my Texas-bound wife. Comedy Central,FOX,or countrymusic, can get my viewership & purchasing power real quick - would be great to wake up to satire again instead of Joe Platitude

I suspect its Imus, Charles, Warner with Sports. Bartlett with comedy. And hopelly lou and mcgirk.

Neil broke this story. So much for this being out of his speciality!! The return of the Voice of WFAN to another station is a huge sports radio story. Boomer and Carton are toast.

Poor Best, he has like 20 questions to answer on here. Is there a return date in mind?

Thank God above. Imus - we missed you so much!!! Now the Presidential Erection can proceed!!! Without Imus? There would have been NO honest reporting on it at all.

I-Man - we LOVE you. I was never offended by anything you said....as it was obvious to any Imus fan that you made fun of society....social satire...and we need more of that today...so many "holier than thou" types.

Great news!!! Can't wait!

Maya,
Unfortunately I don't know the answers to most of the questions here!
If I had to guess on a return date, I'd say early Jan. But I don't know.

Thank you, God, and Neil Best for this GREAT news. This waiting has been intolerable. I've been listening to my Iman CD's which I love but it's starting to feel like "groundhog day" to me. I am SO excited.

Don't forget, when Bob Grant recently returned to WABC Radio, the announcement was made, and he was back on the air the next day.

Don't forget SupportImus.org either!

Happy Birthday, Neil! You really are the best!

The Mets are a bunch of Nappy Headed Jose's

Amen - I am thrilled beyond belief. 6 months w/o Imus has been hell.
Neil - can you find out about a TV outlet?

January, Best what do you mean by that? Why january? You said this was close.

Welcome back to Imus and Charles. What about Chris? I think it's tacky that Bernard is being considered for hire in a non-speaking role only. What's up with that?? He's a riot! I guess his irreverent impressions of Mayor Nagin are a laugh of the past.

Our Constitution grants us the right to criticize and poke fun at our leadership. It's rarely pretty. Even Jesus, is publically ridiculed without consequence. Reagan, Carter, Clinton, Bush and countless other leaders are bashed every day, but they, of course, are not members of a protected class.

I think we need to add white males to the list of those who are not allowed to be discriminated against or made the brunt of comedians routines. If the President and Our Lord can handle the heat, then Mayor Nagin ought to consider himself in good company and rise above the protection afforded him by his color and live in the same world as the rest of us.

About time. I only hope that the I=Man will be carried out here in the Great Northwest. I also would expect him to be simulcast on TV.

Its about time too hear what is happened in the oral office lately....and in the up and comeing Presidential erection.....thanks who ever you are...

Recken we will have too get new silver and pictures when this pres leaves agan.....we need to give her and him a nother chance thay`ll have the door knobs this time....

HAY IMUS YOU`VE BEEN GONE TOO LONG WE WANT YOU BACK. I HOPE YOU GET SPONSORS WHO AREN`T AFRAID OF THAT BLACK MAN WHO LIKES TO GO AROUND TAKING THE LIVELYHOOD AWAY FROM WHITE MEN. PLEASE HURRY UP AND COME BACK ON THE AIR.

How about Mike Breen on sports? He was a riot and not very controversial, a rare combination these days.

Keep on it Neil - We miss the I-man

Neil,

You have done more then you were required to do. You reported a wonderful story that is about to come true.

The I-Man is coming back at some point in the near future, and that is all we need to know.

This is great news. Imus was fired by Leslie Moonves and the cowards of CBS for one reason...they got scared. CBS could care less about race relations and the same goes for NBC. NBC already proved their hypocracy by not firing that sanctimoneous shmuck Al Roker, after he made disparaging comments about epileptics. Apparently an apology was enough for Al, but not for Imus.

Imus is going to have a field day ripping apart the scum of NBC and CBS, and myself and millions of others will be laughing and listening every day. Those who are upset by Imus's return....SUCK IT.

Happy Birthday Neil!!!!

Thank you, thank you Neil!!! I think you should be on Imus' first show so you could tell him about his crazy fans that sometimes abused you but loved you just the same. I bet you could tell him some stories!

With your sense of humor and Imus' it would be great!!

Let the "Erection" begin!!!

I'm so glad, but will the humor be watered down? Will I hear my favorite song parody, "Friends With White Faces"? I tend to doubt it. To silence Bernie is not fair. I will miss his impressions of the "Cardinal" and I am a Roman Catholic!!!!

Opie reported on his morning show that his sources say Imus is on his way in to WABC... Sounds imminent, unlike what Neil is saying.

Ron,
I said the signing was imminent but not necessarily his first day on the job is imminent!
Neil

There are so many dreadful morning shows on NY radio -- WOR, WABC, 'FAN-- that one would think that any of these stations and more (WCBS with their silly 'au courant' background music for their awful headlines-between-a-thousand-commercials format) would jump to get a guaranteed ratings booster like Imus & Co. Behind the sometimes sophomoric (and sophisticated) humor were intelligent questions and comments that held politicians feet to the fire like no else in the lapdog media. Amen, come back,Lord Imus. Let forgiveness and free speech rule.

I hope we don't have to wait past January. It's nuts they were fired and worse we've been w/out the show for almost 6 months now. Boomer and Morning Joe suck.

Great news I hope that we will be able to receive Mr. Imus and the whole team here in Nashville, Tn.

Be aware guys that WABC streams on the web so if Imus goes to ABC, you'll be able to pick up the feed on the web!

We haven't turned on MSNBC since Imus was fired in April so this is great news. I guess we'll have to learn how to listen online if necessary but it's worth it to hear our favorite morning program again.

as one former IMUS 'player' is famous for saying ... 'YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!"

Neil, you really have made me happy. Yeah baby! I'm so happy to hear Bernie will be back, even if it means he'll be silent for a while...but not long, I'm sure. My mornings have been so unsettled - can't wait to hear what the I-man has to say about all the backstabbers and hypocrites who turned their back on him. I can't wait to hear the great music again and I can't wait to hear Charles. I hope we don't have to wait too long.

Happy birthday, Neil!!

As a gift, I'm sure you'd be happy to know Howard Stern just read this story on his radio show!

Why do you think he won't be on radio imminently?

I just mean he won't be on, like . . . Friday or something.

Maybe November. Maybe January. I don't know.

Oh I hope it isn't the Satelite Sisters holding him up? Can we take a collection up for them?

I want Imus back ,way before the Presidential Primarys start. Anyone remember the movie "Primary Colors"? There needs to be a simulcast for TV, any news on the TV side? FBN? I could wait for Radio till January if he was already broadcasting on Cable TV., in October.

Happy Birthday Neil and many more.

Happy Birthday Neil !! Just saw your column on Drudge!

Imus is coming back, hurray!

I live in Nevada and no longer watch MSNBC since IMUS was abused by them. Hurry back and go national!

Neil, you made it to drudge. You are really big time now.

Neil,

You are "sportsWatch" right?

Why are you reporting on a Non-Sports move like Imus?

Shouldn't this be left to your entertainment section?

The sooner you can stop talking about this clown the better.

I have never listened to WFAN more in the morning since he has been gone.

I'll throw you the bone that you are just following through on this original Sports story.

But once he lands his gig, can you please stop the Imus madness? Thankyou

Yours truly

A "Sports" Media Fan

There goes my housecleaning! The only good to come from Imus being off the air for 6 months was I got so much done in the morning as I couldn't turn on the tv and hear all those idiots! My floors were swept, my cabinets cleaned, my laundry done, etc, oh well, maybe its time to hire a maid so I can watch my favorite-Don Imus again!

Thanks, Neil. I hope you're right and we hear something soon.

Best, what is this january business?

Neil posts on Imus simply b/c Imus was the primary reason for success at the sports radio station, WFAN. Now he's been fired and will wind up somewher else meaning competition for the new morning show on WFAN which is a sports show. There is no greater competition to WFAN than the voice of WFAN, Imus. This should be obvious.

Happy Birthday, Neil!

And you may be Mr. Best, but you're not THE BEST until you get us a date.

Whoever your source is - you are just going to have to hold their feet to the fire until they give you a date. THEN you'll be the best! Right now...you're just a good guy. :-)

And Mike, Mike, Mike....you can't burst the bubble of I-fans on this glorious day.....but you certainly can just move on to the next Neil Best article......

And I didn't mean to be anonymous....Linda S

Neil,

You scooped scooped Variety, your the BEST! Imus' package most certainly includes cable since 50% of his salary was covered by fees from MSNBC. Questions. Where is Imus going? Who is Imus' sports guy? You scooped Variety once you can do it here, this is your story.

Variety Drools, Best Rules!

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117973275.html?categoryid=18&cs=1

Thanks for the link, Channel Surfer!

Great reporting, Neil. I am a 74 year old Imus junkie. Can't wait for that Imus fix each morning.

grandfather says this "don't quit"

Come on back Imus, your show was the only one on air that brought the real news about what is happening in the USA, the truth about the lies of our government. Waiting for you. And what about free talking in this country. You said absolutely nothing wrong. And bring back the whole crew.
Mary

Hot Damn!
Goody, Goody!
At last, sanity returned to the airwaves!

Come back soon Imus to TV so we can watch from Georgia.

Thank GOD I enjoy listening to him I can not wait. Free radio in the morning is terrible..Thanks....I cant wait..
