ESPN has prettier graphics than SNY does; it's true!

Paolantonio_web.jpgSigh. Three thoughtful readers have written polite notes today to suggest that in my newspaper column I was a tad too kind to SNY's news operation - particularly relative to that of ESPN.

Maybe so. It's true that in addition to its vastly greater resources for covering national news, ESPN has slicker production values and more experienced reporters than does SNY - which you'd expect from a national network with vast riches. (Two million bucks per annum for Rick Reilly!)

The two main points of the piece were that, a) SNY is making an honest effort to present a complete TV news report unlike any other in the market, and, b) it's interesting that in spite of that ESPN's SportsCenter continues to hammer SNY's SportsNite in the ratings when the Mets aren't playing.

That's all. There's room for everyone in our big sports media tent - including the newspapers and their Web sites that still provide the most comprehensive news and analysis of local teams.

Mr. Best, I hope you don't mean to say you usually change your opinion simply as a result of protesting emailers. First, I was thrilled to see your story about SNY. SNY is tremendous in the ways you described. One of the worst things about ESPN happens to be its graphics, which alone render it unwatchable. And you called them "pretty" here? Please look at them again. Then, re read ESPN Ombudsman Le Anne Schreiber's recent piece on how the opinion
"journalism" of ESPN is harmful to players. It could be by omission or commission of course. The speed and sheepishness of your post praising of all things ESPN makes me wonder. Are you perhaps connected financially to ESPN or ESPN.com? Do you ever appear or hope to appear on any of its platforms? As the ombudsman has also said, most sports people will eventually work for ESPN. It's currently as close to a monopoly as you can get. With millions it not billions in human beings' images and fortunes at stake, this is not good. Forget about a fan like me who can't possibly sit through any of their programs.

Thanks for the note, Susan. Oh, my goodness gracious! No, I did not change my opinion. I just felt that in fairness to explain the popularity of ESPN over SNY, I should have mentioned they have superior production values and more seasoned, well-connected reporters, as you would expect from a national channel. No one there pressured me to say or write anything! The only time I've been on ESPN was at 3:25 a.m. on Aug. 30 of this year, when I appeared with Rece Davis during the 25-hour college football preview show.

ESPN IS PAINFUL. I can't watch it.

SNY has the best coverage of ALL of the local sports teams. ESPN is hit or miss and MSG, NY (when it's on) is OK overall, but covers Garden teams beter.
