ESPN and SNY both have their attributes, OK?

bbernstein1019.jpgA couple of SNY loyalists, reacting to a followup blog post I did after my column Friday, defended the local channel's approach to covering sports news relative to ESPN's, and pointed to other blogs and message boards that felt the same way.

Back-and-forth dialogue about issues of the day is healthy, and a nice thing about this whole Internet fad.

But this discussion is going in circles now. Here is the deal:

ESPN generally does a fine job covering national sports news, and has the money for snappy production values, expensive plane tickets and experienced reporters, many of whom learned the trade at newspapers, of course.

SNY does the most thorough job outside daily newspapers of documenting local sports news, surely when it comes to sending out camera crews to record events in and around the city.

Each has its attributes. I'm through with this topic. Enjoy the Pep Boys 500 on ABC later.

Neil, you just summed up the Internet more generally - it was interesting at first, now it's just going in circles.

Btw, nice pic of Bonnie Bernstein. You couldn't find a pic of Erin Andrews or Rachel Nichols? And there has to be a way to sneak in a pic of Scarlett Johansen, don't you think?

Jeez, is there any criticism of SNY?
Bland and generic. Too many talking heads, nowhere near enough production quality as seen on YES and MSG.
And their off-season programming is about as out-of-New York as one can get. Especially in their choice of NCAA material.

SNY was an idea that came 5 years too late.
Thanks to the internet. And the fragmented, segmented and increasingly narrow world of television's 1000+ channels.
If I want NY sports news, I usually hit newspaper web sites [sorry, Newsday doesn't update its game stories fast enough after a game, like the NY Times with its own reporters .. seems to be a problem with all the NY tabloids] The league and many team websites are getting really good with updates and up-to-the-second material like NBA play-by-play or NHL game summaries.
ESPN's website is a good catch-all.
SNY's website, like its programming outlook, is extremely generic and isn't even produced by its own people [it's contracted out to Major League Baseball's internet operation, as is YES's.]

As far as my viewing habits go, if its summer, I'll watch YES or SNY because of all the baseball news, and baseball rules NY.
If its fall or winter, I'll watch MSG, FSN-NY or YES for NBA/NHL and high school sports stuff.
Speaking of high school sports, isn't it interesting that other national companies have been buying up internet sites and broadcasting high school games -- something MSG has done for decades.
And back to the original article - it read like an SNY press release.
Sorry.
At least you aren't conflicted like Raissman re: SNY or just pissed off like Mushnick.

Thanks to all for the comments. Healthy, respectful debate is a good thing.
