Breaking news: Rick Reilly to leave SI!

Rick%20Reilly.jpgColumnist Rick Reilly plans to leave Sports Illustrated when his contract expires at the end of next month, a person familiar with Reilly's situation said Friday.

It is not entirely clear where Reilly is headed, but ESPN is considered a probable landing spot.

Reilly, 49, has been at SI since 1985, and his popular weekly column appears at the end of the magazine.

The news of Reilly's departure comes one day after SI signed Dan Patrick, a former ESPN anchor, for a multi-platform role, including a weekly column near the front of the magazine.

UPDATE: The Big Lead was nice enough to give WatchDog props for breaking this story, so now WatchDog in turn links to a more thorough account on that site. That's the way it works in the blogosphere. Sort of nice, in a way.

Why would anyone give a rat's ass about what some megalomaniac is going to do. What next? Dr.Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz (a stinking crotch, if ever there was one) is leaving, too? Good Freaking Riddance!

Reilly and Patrick, two more medicore talents, they used to do a lovefest on Patrick's ESPN radio show, so now they can swap places and tell each other how wonderfully talented they are on their new platforms. Oh yes, wasn't Reilly trying to play the role of a narc when Sammy Sosa was in Chicago wanting to test Sammy for PEDs? Enough of these overblown "talents." By the way Neil, have you checked out Waldman's, who wasn't playing the sexiest card, original firing at WFAN when she, Ann Ligori and Janet Spaulding were going to sue over their firings because of sexual discrimination and how Emmis backed off but put Waldman on as their overnight score reader?

Reilly's a no talent hack, hopefully he just fades into oblivion.

Any word on whether Skip (girly girl) Bayless is getting his butt shoved out the door, too? You can't get rid of creeps like Reilly, Zimmerman and Bayless fast enough. All thin-skinned weasels.....

This just in:

Sammy Sosa has asked Rick Reilly to take a drug test.

he is awesome

Hey,

I am trying to contact Mr. Reilly for his amazing journalistic abilities. I have a great U.S.A olympian who just helped the US get a bronze medal in Australia last month. This particular man has a story to tell and I feel that Rick is the best person on the face of this earth to tell us about him.
This individual has overcome many hardships and hurdles in his personal life and, now in his forties, is one of the oldest and late-comer rower (paddler) on his team USA.
This individual needs his story told to enlighten us Americans on endurance, faith, and compassion. Please email me with your help.

If anyone does know Rick's email, please contact me at ajbrennan@comcast.net
Thanks,
Tony Brennan

You all may agree with a sports writer/commentator, or you may disagree with a sports writer/commentator, but the bottom line is that whatever your viewpoint, the personal attacks and name calling are un-neccesary. I never understood why readers and listeners of sports commentary cant just agree to dis-agree.

I personally cannot stand listening to John Seibel on ESPN Radio, so I turn off the radio station that carries ESPN, at that point, and leave it alone... I dont run to my nearest computer and start hateful blogs about Seibel. For all I know Seibel will be known for the best radio show in the world and I might be the idiot for turning him off, but you know what? I have the choice to decide what does and doesnt appeal to me and I can do this without ripping a person down.

Instead of reading DP's column in Sports Illustrated &/or listening to Reilly on ESPN, maybe you can use the time to find some personal dignity and character, to realize that anonymity on the net, still does not give anyone free reign to personally attack someone, you dont agree with. A blog is best served if you can come up with thoughtful counter-points to the commentary, with which you disagree.

Rick Reilly will surely be missed... he is the reason I subscribe to SI... you might not like his commentary and weekly columns but there is no need to talk about a great writer this way.

I don't see any of you "critics" winning Sportswriter of the Year! So, get over it... I will follow Reilly wherever he goes!

reilly's maudlin, boring, overrated. i read where SI tried to sweeten the pot with a film deal. ha! did you ever read mike lupica's fiction? astoundingly bad. patrick's decent, but why would i worship a journalist when i don't even worship the stupid players? on the whole, sports journalism is weak in this country. it stifles real creativity and either overemphasizes the scoop (New York) or underemphasizes it (Chicago, etc.). it's mediocre, and if patrick and reilly are the best -- as their salaries suggest -- that's further proof.

Rick Reilly is a great sports writer and will be missed for those who read SI.

I agree Reilly did have some great material. I will miss reading his column

Where is all this venom coming from??? Whether or not you like Reilly, he's a SPORTSWRITER!!! Relax, fellas. If you need to vent about something, think about how the Bush family sold your country to the Saudis.

One thing you always know about Reilly is that he ain't kissing no ones ass. He tells it like it is and lets you have it. I enjoy his writing very much and always start my Sports Illustrated at the back of the magizine. For you people who want to bad mouth him, I can only think he has hurt your feelling in the pass and your too immature to get over it.

How sad..... my favorite thing to do was to go to the back of the magazine when it came in the mail and read his column first, everytime. It will take getting used to. If he does go to ESPN I might have to consider switching.......
