The Big Ten Network debuts with a bang

ASU-logo.gifMostly I've avoided boring you with the ongoing attempts by the new Big Ten Network to gain broad distribution from cable companies. It's the same old story:

More and more TV channels born believing in a God-given right to spots on expanded basic tiers, no matter what the impact on cable bills.

Still, you had to admire the network's spectacular, unbelievable, shocking luck in offering on its very first weekend a game that seemed doomed to interest only Michigan diehards who enjoy early blowouts.

Yup, Appalachian State at the Big House. The upset won't solve all of the Big Ten Network's problems, but it sure was a nice way to make a case for yourself in the Midwest.

And how about the flying start of the Thom Brennaman and Charles Davis broadcast team? Their first pairing came last January during Boise State's incredible Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma, they followed that up with the BCS National Championship game, and then led off this season with Appalachian State's stunning upset over Michigan.

You sound like you're a Fox p.r. person or something.

How about Thom discussing the bowl system while Boise State was lining up for the climactic play?

Barry A. saved his tush.
