MSG, NY . . . Still on TV, Even in Summer
It's easy to forget during the summer that MSG and its runt-of-the-litter sibling, FSNY, still exist on your TV remote and your cable bill.
They do, though, and not just for cool archival stuff like Sunday night's "MSG Vault'' show looking back at the glory days of Roller Derby, which I wrote about in my Friday column.
Friday night on "MSG, NY" there were at least a couple of things worth checking out. Anthony Fucilli, fresh from Albany, offered an update on the Michael Strahan Retirement Threat/Contract Pout. Also, the network showed highlights from Gus Johnson's sit-down with Stephon Marbury outside the Garden earlier in the day.
Steph said he had no regrets about his recent manic/giddy performance on "Mike'd Up" with Bruce Beck, then fell back into his demeanor from that night's infamous interview. Johnson seemed a little scared.
Marbury said something about the Knicks having a championship team on paper. (Alas, they play on a basketball court.)
Anyway, MSG promised some Q&A with fans on Saturday night's Steph segment, then plans to put the entire interview on its Web site Sunday.

Neil,
You are not going to write about the Michael Vick saga? Not even going to comment on the sponsors dropping and suspending him?
I can tell your Dog Lover via the Puppy Photo you must have an opinion?
What about a comparsion btw what happened to Imus and Vick, how the MSM treated both of them? Also Vick is going to be getting paid for not playing football. Imus lost his radio and tv show his livelihood, he didn't break any FCC rules or laws. In fact he was upholding his contract with CBS by being controversial and edgy. Is there two standards being applied here? Imus gets fired no law broken and Vick is presumed innocent until found guilty how many counts is there against him?
Hi Neil,
Have watched "The Bronx Is Burning" on ESPN2? I stumbled upon it one night & now I'm hooked.
Everything is a soap opera!
And I hate Michael Vick!!
For once, I actually agree with Sen. Robert Byrd: I wouldn't object to anyone who could do what Michael Vick did to those poor creatures being executed.
This is a test.
Ree:
Thanks for the note. I sent an earlier response but I don't know what happened to it.
Yes, I am keeping an eye on the Vick situation and probably will comment in an upcoming column, but mostly Bob Glauber has been covering the story for us. Today we did have a wire story reporting the Nike situation.
So Newsday has you covered on this story one way or another.
Fear not.
Thanks for reading. Neil
I can't wait for the roller derby show on MSG this weekend. Just this past week, I stumbled across some old WWF match on MSG from 1977. As I was watching it, I realized that I was there that night with my father. That night he proved what a great guy he was by hauling me and my best friend to the Garden via NJ Transit to sit with some of the most frightening indivduals in the tri state area and watch a wrestling match. This June 77 match was the first rematch between Bruno Sammartino and Superstar Billy Graham since Bruno lost the title in Baltimore a month earlier. We got bought three tickets at the brand new Ticketron branch here in central Jersey and convinced my dad to take us into the city. When we got there, it was pandemonium. The Garden was sold out as was the Felt Forum where they were showing the match on closed circuit TV. Some guy was offering to pay $50 a ticket which my father pleaded with us to take. Stupidly, we said no way and made our way into the Garden to watch such outstanding matches as George the Animal Steele against Tony Garea, the aforementioned heavyweight championship match, and a tag team battle between Andre the Giant and Chief Jay Strongbow against Ken Patera and Nikolai Volkov. The match that still boggles my mind in these polically correct times was between Polish Power Ivan Putski and Baron Von Rachke. In the pre match interviews, Putski was going to make the Baron pay for what he did to Poland during WWII while the Baron, wearing Swastikas on his cape and accompanied by Fred Blassie yelled about how he would brain claw Putski. Life was a lot different 30 years ago. After leaving the smoke filled Garden with a pounding headache, we promptly sat in Penn Station until 2:30 in the morning thanks to a derailment in the tunnel back to Jersey. What a night. My father still cringes when he thinks about it. Thank you MSG for rekindling these memories and for the opportunity to take him a video tape of the match when we go to visit him this week in Florida.
Uh, oh. Looks like Philips was ticked off about not winning the comment contest Friday and is looking to regain his throne!
MSG NY is always worth checking out. They keep highlights short and to the point, good update news about the teams the network owns and provides some entertainment.
Hell of a lot better than SNY in the fall and winter.
I thought Ree made an excellent point about Michael Vick being placed on paid suspension, while Imus was terminated when he didn't even break the law or any FCC rules.
I am on the side of the dogs on this one. As disturbing as this story is, it is one that I am following.
On a happier note, while searching for Ree's post, I was overcome with joy to see a picture of the "red sock". Thank you for bringing back a wonderful memory.
Wrestling was a lot more fun back then. Roller Derby was fun too.
