Mike and Chris: Trying to Conquer North America

As of Monday, a station called "The Beast'' in Tampa is carrying the "Mike and the Mad Dog'' show from New York's WFAN, a fellow CBS Radio station.

It's no surprise that the people in Florida believe there are enough listeners in the market who care about what is going on in New York.

Former WFAN bad boy Sid Rosenberg has been successful in the Miami area with a sports talk show that is not shy about tackling topics from the old country.

Still, it's all a little pathetic, isn't it? Yo, Florida, pay attention to your own teams. You left New York for the sun and fresh orange juice. The price to be paid is trading the Yankees for the Devil Rays. Get over it.

(Update: As loyal commenter "Jeff" just posted, this syndication stuff for Mike and Chris better not mean they are going to start talking about more out-of-town news just to keep everyone around the country happy.)

For years, whether it was station policy or Mike and Chris themselves, there was a great deal of resistance to syndicating the show. The excuse being they wanted the show to remain a New York show, Station management also resisted streaming on the internet.

But money talks. I hope we will not be treated to drivel about eh Bucs and the Lightning.

And where will it stop?

Maybe there'll be some more Bucs and Rays interviews but I think/hope they'll keep it as it is just as they have since adding WROW years ago.

It all seems very strange.

First of all, they debut the show in the market when Mike and Chris are on alternating vacations and won't be together full-time until September.

Mike was welcoming Tampa numerous times from 1 to 3. Small problem: he wasn't on! I went to the Tampa station's website yesterday and saw they are running it 3-6. I even checked the stream around 2:00 to see if it might have been on for a special debut. It wasn't. Sporting News Radio was on.

Then at 3:00, the Tampa audience supposedly joined Mike (without the Mad Dog) for....very unexciting Mets talk. Plus, Mike had the wrong copy for a contest. And no guests either, and I've always thought is M&MD's strong suit that they can get basically anybody, but not so yesterday.

If I lived in Tampa and heard this for the first time, I'd wonder what all the fuss was about. I imagine their constant Giants and Jets talk during football season won't go over well down there either, not to mention them spending an hours a day on the National League playoffs in October.

Weird move.

It was on. The scheduled show "The Sports Chicks" is on vacation. I can hear WQYK here on the Florida East Coast 24 hrs a day and listen a lot because they broadcast Yankees games, CBS College Football and Basketball. There are a lot of NY'ers in this 100 mile area (coast to coast) of Central Florida and I even bet this station can be heard clearly down in South Florida where the "new" New York City is. There are 2 other Tampa stations broadcasting local sports for the natives from 3-6PM and WQYK broadcasts local shows from 6-9am 12-3pm and 6-7pm which is pretty much more than the other two do.

Oh, I guess it was on over the air, but I definitely a different show on the internet stream. Another weird thing.

I also live on the east coast of Fla. and 1010 WQYK comes in good during the day. It cannot be heard in Miami though.
When you enter tampa the signs say welcome to Tampa
"Spring home of the New York Yankees"
The newspapers have as much yankee coverage as the devil Rays.

I read on another blog someplace that Mike said yesterday that WFAN was close to an agreement with 2 other stations but refused to divulge where and when. He said by September, these 2 stations would be on board.

Now one of them has got to be in Miami which is New York City South...the question is where most likely is the second? Perhaps Buffalo which, afterall, allows MSG Network to carry Sabre games and then receives Knick, Met and Yankee games.

Where else could these new stations be?
