Jim Lampley is an Interesting, Unusual Dude
I heard none of Jim Lampley's hour Sunday for WFAN's reunion weekend.
But my funkiest interview in researching my feature in Sunday's newspaper on WFAN’s history was with Lampley, who hosted the first show in the station’s history on July 1, 1987. The guy sure knows how to use complicated words in complicated sentences. I wish I could have done a better job keeping up with him in taking notes.
Here is his theory on the emotional connection formed between hosts and listeners, a bond so strong it is all but inevitable: “It shows that love is a habit, because almost anyone can succeed in sports talk radio. Almost any style will work.
“I’ve always told program directors, if you put people in those chairs and leave them there for an extended period of time they will develop their following. They don’t even have to be sports fans sometimes. People develop a habit for it.
“It’s a very visceral thing. It’s not an intellectual connection like you have for Walter Cronkite. It’s something deeper than that.’’

I dont live in NY anymore, since last July 1st, I've been on the beach in Fla. I tried to listen to some of FAN's reunion online Saturday afternoon when Spencer Ross was on and it was so garbled, I had to turn it off. Disappointing. Anyway, Lampley was the substitute host for Tony Bruno on Sporting News radio last week. He sounded a bit pompous and seemed to be talking down to the listeners and callers a bit. But he brought a couple of discussions to the table not normally heard on talk radio, Bob Costas was a guest one day, and of course, he did a lot of boxing and had James Toney, the two-time steroid cheat, in the studio on Friday. I don't think I could take him on a daily basis, but in a few doses, he's ok.
I find Lampley to be a pompous jerk. when he is on anything I turn it off!

I actually heard Lampley sub for Tony Bruno last week as well. It takes a while to figure it out but it seems that he has a very dry sense of humor. Either that or he's a jerk.
