Bud Collins: Thanks for the Memories
NBC offered a heartfelt tribute to Bud Collins Sunday to honor his 35 years covering Wimbledon on TV on the occasion of the network's decision to take him off its air after this year's tournament.
The retrospective on his past interviews and past fashion statements was well deserved. But is the severe criticism NBC has gotten for the move deserved? Maybe not. Collins, whose interviews with the finalists aired well after the outcome was determined, is not as sharp as he was in his prime. Perhaps it's better to go out now, while he's still a beloved and admired broadcasting pro.
When he was interviewing Roger Federer, he referenced the upcoming U.S. Open - at Forest Hills. He quickly corrected himself. But still . . .
