RAW's Hottest Star Wasn't on TV Last Monday

First off, I have to apologize for the infrequent posts as of late. I’ve been quite busy, as evidenced in pages A6 and A7 of your Newsday.

This may be a bit late, but I wanted to ring in about what I thought was the most intriguing moment of last Monday’s Raw. Even more intriguing – none of us saw it on television.

I’m speaking about the 12-minute dark match that took place before the show went on the air. In one corner was Lance Cade – the five-year WWE veteran who seemed poised to get a decent push as a mid-card heel after breaking up with his tag team partner Trevor Murdoch.

In the other corner was a pale, plain, light heavyweight – likely unrecognizable to the majority of the fans. Yet somehow, this relative unknown made Cade tap out.

The mystery man’s name – Bryan Danielson.

That name may not mean a lot to many of you, but “The American Dragon” is widely regarded as, pound for pound, one of the greatest wrestlers in the country today. His fans in Ring of Honor – where he has long shined as the promotion’s top star – have even taken to chanting, “Best in the world!” during his matches. That’s high praise, especially in a promotion built on workrate.

But despite his reputation, the common thinking has long been that Danielson would likely never find a place in WWE, where his 5’10”, 185-pound frame and bland appearance would never past muster.

Yet there he was last week – not only going over clean on one of WWE’s rising stars with his “Cattle Mutilation” finisher, but doing so in the longest match of the night. At 12 minutes, the match was 1/3 longer than the night’s main event of Triple H and Jeff Hardy.

So what’s going on here? Was this a tryout for a possible spot on the roster? Or was it just a one-time payday since WWE was near his hometown last Monday? All sides have remained relatively coy about the subject. I reached out to several ROH officials, who all declined to comment other than to say that Danielson, who is under an ROH contract, worked the match with the company’s permission.

On his blog, Jim Ross said, for his money, Danielson is a “keeper” and keeper who exhibits “great work ethic, unique skills, lots of character, and… wrestles like he is a 'star.' ” It's also worth noting that Danielson was trained in Shawn Michaels' now defunct wrestling school, alongside fellow student, Lance Cade.

While adding the Dragon to WWE’s roster could theoretically be a boon for the company at a time that it desperately needs an injection of new blood, ROH loyalists would likely frown at the move – not only because they’d missing listening to Danielson cheesy “Final Countdown” entrance music, but because they would fear that Danielson would get lost in the WWE shuffle.

It’s a warranted concern. I can’t imagine that, with his size, look and peculiar wrestling style, WWE would have high hopes for Danielson. Knowing WWE, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Danielson be repackaged in a one-dimensional gimmick and sent out to do jobs for the Great Khali.

But maybe not. Some people may have had the same doomsday expectations for CM Punk, but within a year, he was pushed as the top star of WWE’s third brand and even given a run with the ECW championship. Heck, just about six months after his WWE debut, he had the chance to wrestle in the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 23. At this year’s WrestleMania, he won the match.

Still, it would be a bit disingenuous to look at some of those facts as proof that Punk is a big star in WWE. He’s doing OK, but in the bigger pecking order of the WWE roster as a whole, he wouldn’t break the top 12 in terms of WWE’s priorities.

But that doesn’t mean that his decision to join WWE wasn’t the right one. The reality is, sometimes being a medium sized fish in a big pond could be well worth it. Look at Jamie Noble – another former ROH heavyweight champion who has essentially worked as a jobber in WWE since returning from an ROH stint in 2005.

I’ll bet you that, despite his low spot on the cards, Noble is making more money working for WWE than he ever would working the occasional ROH show every few weekends and fleshing out his salary with independent gigs. Appearing on television, pay per view, and in front of thousands of fans each night, Noble is also far more recognized in his WWE role than he ever was before. What’s more, as a designated WWE agent, I believe Noble also collects benefits from the company, and has some say in the creative direction of the matches he helps “produce.”

If WWE decides to sign Danielson, it may be the end of the “American Dragon,” as we know him, but it doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be the right decision for him. Danielson would make more money, and have the opportunity to ply hid trade on the biggest stage of them all.

But that one dark match last Monday may have had even bigger ramifications than the services of one wrestler. It could be an indication that WWE is finally taking notice of ROH. When WWE finally opened its eyes to the red-hot product that was ECW in the late 1990s, it tremendously benefited both companies. ECW got a much-needed injection of cash, and WWE got use of some of the hottest young talent in the wrestling business at the time. What’s more, WWE leaned on Paul Heyman to help establish some of WWE’s struggling acts, like Al Snow.

WWE would be well served to establish a similar relationship with ROH. One of WWE’s biggest failures in recent years has been developing its farm system to produce young, capable talent. ROH could help WWE do just that.

The one problem – and it’s a fairly big one – is the clashing of wrestling styles between the two companies. An ROH-trained wrestler – even one of the promotion top stars – would probably need to be stripped down and retrained in the far-less-bombastic, but fundamentally sound WWE style.

There’s another benefit to WWE in doing business with ROH. At a time when wrestling ratings are sluggish, ROH is the one wrestling product that actually “hip” – not unlike ECW was ten years ago. That “hip factor” is imperative in wrestling. And while ROH’s fan base may be small, it’s incredibly passionate – and God knows WWE could use every fan they can get. Otherwise, they might resort to something desperate.

…Like a money giveaway.

I think CM Punk can be used as proof that if someone from the indies develops a gimmick/personality that is marketable to the mainstream WWE audience, then the WWE will use them. They aren't going to hold anyone down for malicious reasons, they want money. If Danielson comes in and can be marketed in such a way that captures enough fans attention beyond just being a good wrestler, then they will go with him. He could either go the Charlie Haas route or the CM Punk route, it's up to him. Not to say Charlie Haas couldn't still find a marketable personality himself, but you see what I'm saying. Punk's the MITB winner, and has barely been there 2 years, I don't know what much he could of asked for, being that he debuted on the C-Show in this time and has got as far as he has.

I still think the money giveaway in theory was a good idea, just the execution last monday was quite poor. Ratings proved that it didn't work. However they had more press coverage this week, and will hopefully learn from their mistakes tonight in making the show flow better. I pray they do, because I'm no where near as much looking forward to watching Raw as I was 4 weeks ago. :-(

Why did you have to mention his pale skin color? Thats pretty racist. I don't think his fans first think of his skin color when they see him wrestle. You're beter than that.

Sorry, but CM Punk has been booked in such a flip-flop fashion that I can't buy him as "proof" WWE knows how to push indy-talent. First he's got a streak, then he's losing to Hardcore Holly, then he's primed for a ECW title run, then he's losing to Johnny Morrison, then he's ECW champion, then he's losing to Mike the Miz, and ever since he won MitB he's lost more matches than he's won.

Punk was also a KOTR finalist, and has a win over Morrison who the week earleir beat Kane.

So what if he's losing a litle bit? It's called spreading his momentum around before his proper push. He isn't in one of the top spots yet, so it makes sense to use some of the credibility he has on making others look good. There's no need to worry, when he comes close to cashing in his contract he will be pushed and given that credibilty back.

You don't want him getting too big before his challenge, because that means you've put him over others who could have used the rub while Punk is mulling about doing nothing waiting for the time to come to cash in, and obviously the time hasn't been right for them to do it yet. It's not Punk's fault Jeff Hardy decided to get himself suspended.

The bottom line is every wrestler dreams of wrestling for WWE, that's where the fortune and glory are. ROH is designed for a specific market that will not generate any mainstream attention.

If Danielson signs, I have a feeling WWE won't use him as a midcard, mat-technician. He's a lot smaller than Benoit or Angle.

But I hope he does sign. WWE is the big times and he deserves to be there. Lets just hope that they don't change his name like they did to Sydal.

yeah i marked out when i found out it was danielson

The 'pale' isn't a white/black/yellow/brown/red/whatever skin color you want comment. Pale is quite frankly what the guy looks like - and WWE is all about appearances. This is the same company that has people shave, oil up, and fake tan.

Personally, I think his belly button is too close to the top of his trunks and that makes him not WWE material. Belly button placement is a critical item in judging the quality and charisma of a wrestler.

Danielson should go in for enhancement surgery, have said belly button repaired, and relaunch with a photo shoot. Then his skill would be widely recognized.

michaelpsoncrack:

It wouldn't hurt to grow his hair out as well, and possibly gain six inches. ;)

and he should also grow a beard, wear black trunks with a cross, come out to motorhead and use the pedigree as his finisher. Then....maybe then...he will get a push.

This guy is 5 foot 10. He should take his WWE job and enjoy putting food on the table for a few years. Seriously, hes probably getting tired of his part time job he has to hold while doing ROH on the weekends. Regardless of push, money is the bottom line. He'll be in WWE soon.

Yo I think dragons pale skin can be his gimmick and he jions the new nation of domination as the pale hart. He also can't wrestle out side cuse he will burn to death.

"They aren't going to hold anyone down for malicious reasons, they want money."

Derailing the push of an over merchandise mover at times because he doesn't drink and that makes him "stuck up" is malicious.

RoH is NOT hip. It's for wrestling nerds. ECW was for wrestling nerds but appealed to the average teenager/college student. RoH does not. In fact, RoH might be the most overrated promotion in the history of wrestling...and boy, is that saying something.

Danielson should grow that awesome beard back. LOL.

BTW, if Danielson doesn't end up in WWE, I hope he finally wins the NWA title.
