WWE Backlash preview and predictions

So I guess there's a Pay-Per-View on Sunday? This is the time of year (from WrestleMania through SummerSlam) when I don't really pay attention much. So based on what little I know of the build-up, here's my predictions for Sunday's show.

World Title match: Undertaker vs. Edge. Taker will retain the title somehow; they didn't put it on him at WrestleMania just to have him lose it back.

WWE Title Match: Orton vs. Cena vs. HHH vs. JBL: Has the title ever changed hands in a Fourway match? I don't think it has. Orton's been champ for six months now -- and I love long title reigns. I don't see them putting the belt on HHH or Cena -- if they wanted to do that, they should have done it last month at WrestleMania for an extra big babyface moment. I don't seem them switching the title to JBL -- the belt going from one heel to another means nothing. I can see Orton retaining, but with JBL pinning one of the other two babyfaces (or at least costing one of them the match) to set up a feud there. And hey -- wouldn't it be cool to see Orton retain in a hard-fought match, and then CM Punk cashes in his Money in the Bank and wins the title, a la Edge after the Elimination Chamber a few years ago???

Shawn Michaels vs. Batista, with Chris Jericho as ref: This feud is kinda interesting to me, and I think it'd be a big shot in the arm for Batista to get the win here.

Kane vs. Chavo for the ECW Title: Lots of interference and weapons, and Kane retains.

Big Show vs. Khali: I predict fans will choose BUTTERED popcorn, rather than plain.

MVP vs. Matt Hardy: I'd love to see Matt Hardy win the title finally, but MVP's 19-year reign is just too much fun to end now.

12-diva tag match: Who cares?

And: I'm hoping King William Regal will have SOMETHING to do on this show. The King of the Ring win for him -- insanely stupid as I think it was -- gives him some momentum, and I'd like to at least see them build on it. Perhaps he interferes in one of the big title matches?

You're not only one hoping that Punk cashes in his shot against Orton soon. I don't see it happening though, especially since they've been saying the Money in the Bank is for ANY belt. I still see him feuding with Jericho for a while (and having good matches in the process) before winning the IC title, only to be lost in the RAW midcard scene.

Quick hit predictions:
Fatal 4-way: Orton retains
Big Gold Belt match: Taker, duh.
HBK/Batista: Batista after Jericho "accidently" costs HBK the match, setting up a series of awesome HBK/Y2J matches.
ECW Title: Kane, but does it really matter?
Vince McMahon's Jackoff material: Big Show
US Title: MVP, I see them drawing this out to Summerslam for some reason

And in the CM Punk vein of things, I'd rather see him hold onto the briefcase until Edge inevitably gets the title back after screwing Taker in a hard fought match. Edge barely able to stand after the screw job ending, and then CM Punk's music hits and he gives Edge a taste of his own medicine and beats him for the belt. Granted this goes against every rumor I've heard about him going to Raw, but the pop when Punk's music hits would be HUGE

I can't help but think the Regal KOTR win will set him up as somehow claiming ownership to all the brands and making the WWE into some kind of new age monarchy. He's definitely a good enough interview to pull it off and I think the overarching storyline of Regal treating the brands as his pawns has at least some possibility. At the very least it would give ECW and Smackdown somewhat of a focus. It just seemed weird to me that Lawler and JR kept making it a point to repeatedly call the tournament winner the "King of the WWE" rather than just the King of the Ring. I'm sure there's a reason for it.

Does anyone else think MITB is super predictable since everyone except RVD has used it at the end of a gruelling match? Why wouldn't everybody do that?

I haven't really payed lots of attention, but i guess I'll have to agree with your Seth's predictions. I expect MVP to lose by DQ, resulting in a couple of rematches and such

I would be awesome to see Punk cash in money in the bank, but IM pretty sure he will feud with Mr. Kennedy before that. In kayfabe, Kennedy still hasnt recovered from MITB, he can claim he should really be MITB after his win in WM23 and can even claim that if he had been back in time for KIng of the Ring he would have beat Punk in the finals, which i believe was the original plan, because regal beating punk in the finals for it made absolutely no sense at all.

In an interview today with the Sun, Regal says he's been pestering Vinnie Mac to put him back in the ring for a while, and in a top tier role. So I guess winning the KOTR is the beginning of the Regal megapush

I think Punk will cash in his title shot at the One Night Stand PPV.

Good post. I agree with most of your predictions.

However, I'm going to predict that Chavo Guerrero wins the ECW title back at Backlash.

When they gave him the bodyguard (and more involvement with the stable), I believe the intentions were to build him up even more as a cowardly heel champion.

I can see Bam Neely costing Kane the title.
