Two things WWE is doing really, really well
I hope I'm not coming across as too negative in this blog towards the current WWE product; I'm actually a huge wrestling fan, just trying to offer constructive criticism from the perspective of a lifelong fan and someone who's been on the inside.
So I have to say -- there's two things WWE is doing right now that I think are completely and utterly awesome: The WWE 24-7 On Demand channel, and WWE Magazine.
WWE 24-7 is the best six bucks I spend every month, a mark's dream. You know how much fun it is to pop in an old wrestling tape when you're hanging around the house? Imagine being able to watch stuff you never thought you'd see again, or never thought you'd see at all. That tape library is a freakin' GOLDMINE and even a 24-7 cable channel doesn't even scratch the surface of how much money there is to be made there.
Not to sound like WWE's marketing department, but from one fan to another, if you don't have it, get it.
And WWE Magazine, ever since they revamped things about a year or so ago, is just an absolutely fun as hell read. As a designer, I gotta tell you, it's one of the most beautifully designed magazines out there, and the photography is phenomenal. As a former magazine writer, the writing is interesting, engaging, and entertaining.
Reading the magazine is actually more fun than watching the TV show ... uh oh ... they better watch out, because last time that happened, Long Island's own Vince Russo took over and their ratings went through the roof ...
WWE is even starting a second magazine geared towards kids. I'm just curious how they intend to build an audience for that, given that they clearly don't market sex and violence towards children.
Does my sarcasm come across over the Internet?
And while we're on the subject of magazines, by the way, ya gotta check out the Pro Wrestling Illustrated Year in Review magazine, which is on sale now. Absolutely, positively no one recaps the wrestling year as well as PWI.
P.S. Please don't tell anyone I had nice things to say about something WWE did. It would kill my gimmick.
