The Morning Non-Skate: Bruises, Dads and Pilates

All the activities here in Westchester were off-ice, as coach Tom Renney gave his charges a day without gear before a skate tomorrow and a flight to Chicago.

So, some bits and pieces:

Defenseman Marc Staal and Michal Rozsival were banged up, in Renney's words, and were two of the players who will benefit from the break. I spoke with Staal, who was working out, and said he'll play in Chicago. Rozsival, who appeared to injure his left shoulder/chest from a hit but returned, was sore. But Renney said he didn't expect to call up Bobby Sanguinetti or Corey Potter unless the situation changed tomorrow.

Nigel Dawes, who was wearing a post-game ice wrap on his right shoulder, said that was fine. The mid-ice collision with Radek Martinek last night only dinged his opposite shoulder, he said, and didn't need treatment. He joked that his right shoulder was achy from "Drury hitting me and bumping me in practice."

***
The fathers of players and staff began to arrive for the team's trip tomorrow to Chicago and Pittsburgh. Dads of 18 players will accompany the team, share rooms, steak and Italian dinners and watch the games from suites. Lauri Korpikoski's father is coming from Finland; and Markus Naslund and Henrik Lundqvist's dads from Sweden.

***
Sights and sounds: Led by an instructor, Lundqvist, Chris Drury and strength and conditioning coach Reg Grant were on mats easing into pilates holds.
...Aaron Voros was carrying a dozen new sticks. "Just in case," said Voros, who has been a recent scratch...Renney said he remains disappointed in the power play and is considering going back to two units, rather than three...

More on that later....

Zherdev has 0 goals in last 9 games, i say we give him 6 years at 7 mil a year

Back to two? ....When the 3rd powerplay unit got barely one shift last night? He already went back to two powerplay units ... the wrong ones apparently!

The first PP last night was horrendous but the 2nd power play looked decent, and the results were a goal when Gomez/Drury were on the bench.

Joe, that post wasn't funny the first time you said it.

If the Rangers based anything they do, positively or negatively, on a 9 game stretch, then they really are a sad organization.

Zherdev is leading the team in points for the entire season.

Read that sentence again and say it out loud, over and over.

Why the hell would you have 3 PP units? I'm giving Renney until the playoffs to get us over this 2nd round hump we keep hitting. If we dont make it to the finals, Sather, for your own sake, get rid of him.

They don't have enough offensive talent for two units and this clown is using three. BRILLIANT! What did they base Reddens contract on? Certainly not the past two seasons with Ottawa. Nice to see the team gets to relax with their dads and be distracted on a very important road trip. I like the idea of the dads getting together with the team but not right now. Why not give them a vacation. They deserve it after that great performance last night. I know they won but they should have crushed that pathetic team and they barely held on. There is no room for mistakes from now till the end of the season and that usually comes back to haunt you in the playoffs. IF we make it.

is there a weekend for the Moms?

Shouldn't Nigel have that ice pack on his left shoulder?

I am amazed that Renny has let this PP linger up until now. In 4 months, nothing on the PP has changed, and you'd think by now they would have made something happen. Sather goofed so badly re: cap $, he couldn't move anyone in time to sign Sundin, then he let Shanny slip away to NJ.....at least for this season, and this season only, one of those two could have gott'n us over the hump and got our PP going. Obviously, Lou Lamerillo, a well respected 3 time Stanly Cup Winning GM saw something in Shanny huh? Why didn't Sather? So now all we have left is the constant motion of musical chairs again re: the PP. Scotty Bowman would never ever let this sh** happen to us and the sad part is, Dolan could care less...we really need a hands on owner...not a Jerry Jones type mind you, just someone who cares-period! _X_

Have the Devils been any better than the Rangers over the last 3 years? Am I missing something? Shanahan is ANCIENT in hockey years. Who are you going to bench? Prucha again? Callahan? Dawes? Our only physical "threat" Orr? Betts, our best PK guy? Even so, who would you shift to the 4th line? Where was Brendan in April? May? And I love Shanahan. It's time to move along, let the kids play and hope they improve as a team.

TK.....I want the kids to play as well, but no one has stepped up to take control or be an asset to the PP. Until the PP get's going, we're going no where. A 1/2 season of Shanny on our PP could possibly get us over this hump. And, Detroit must think 46 year old Chelious has some value on their defending SC Team otherwise he'd be gone...San Jose see's some value in 44 year old Lemuix, otherwise he would'nt of been sign to a 2 way contract.....so age has nothing or little to do w/it. He was so banged up last year and now, he's in for 1/2 a season and he's healthy as a horse TK. Yeah, I'd split time between Dawes and Shanny to be quite honest w/you. To me, if Lou did this then he see's value in Shanny, and so do I. But before we go any further re: Shanny, let's just see what he brings to the table in NJ, then we'll see who was correct and/or incorrect in judging Shanny.....as Jimmy Buffett say's; "Only time will tell"! _X_

PIP - chelios is mostly a role player who sits a lot of games as he did the 2nd 1/2 of the playoffs last yr. i can't see shanny sitting or he would be somewhat malcontent. lemieux like you said is on 2 way contract with time so far i think in ahl. and believe me if brought up san jose would drop him in a second if need be. problem with shanny is if we start sitting him would cause some problems with him and some of fan base.

i hope the devs signed him for next yr too so there is no chance of him returning here or even the subject matter being broached

You going to post that in EVERY thread? Jeez.

Yeah, PIP, and I remember signing an old Messier and not even making the playoffs for years on end, too. 40 year old forwards don't work in the NHL and as much as I liked Shanahan I wouldn't want to firebomb a youngsters play time or confidence for a year that we clearly aren't built to go deep into the playoffs.

You mean you guys aren't in for signing even more vets and taking up
oodles and oodles of cap space? Maybe we can sign ten 40 year-olds
and have them play offense and defense the whole game.

I think that Roszival's injury should keep him out a few games...that of course is wishful thinking

He looks like he plays injured every game...I can't deal with him anymore

No, You're a Towel

Hey nice job with Shanahan and Jagr, the only guys that made a
difference in the playoffs. You'll be lucky if you make it past the
first round. The "King" can only hold a team so long. If the Rags
didnt overpay overrated defensmen like Redden they may have a
shot at getting an actual goal scorer. Well I guess you can rely
on Nigel Dawes for your scoring.

Short Shifts:
*Enough wasted energy complaining about the power play...
nothing will change until we have a better coaching staff and
more talented players....which means nothing will change

*If you watch out of town broadcasts on Center Ice, -VS-, and
NHL Network (which any hockey junkie does), you know that
no one takes this Rangers team seriously. These are the new
cap-trapped, poor front office and clueless coaching version
of the 21st century Knicks....did someone say MSG...Dolan

*Only the Garden would spend four years rennovating a crumby,
over-rated arena with lousy site lines into a cosmetically
improved over-priced arena with lousy site lines, but nicer
luxury suites (I had seasons with all my buds for 25 years
at the old Garden and this dump until I moved south)

*Has Sam Rosen's latest incarnation of his rug come to life?

*Mara should be the Captain; loves being a Ranger; gritty;
passionate; has balls
Drury is a wonderful person who couldn't inspire paint to dry
Gomez should be drug-tested; if it's negative, trade him

*It's sad to see and hear so many fans from other teams at
Rangers home games....what gives? the over-priced tiks?
the mediocre team? The Ranger fans are louder at the
Mausoleum and the cRock than during most home games.
