Avery's mouth gets him suspended indefinitely

There but for fortune....

Sean Avery can't stay away from controversy---even off the ice. Sound familiar?

The Dallas Stars' forward and former Ranger---who has been criticized by teammates in Texas---is suspended indefinitely, pending a hearing with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, for remarks he made this morning in reference to Calgary player Dion Phaneuf and Phaneuf's girlfriend, Elisha Cuthbert, who previously had a relationship with Avery.

Avery said: "I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my (former girlfriends). I don't know what that's about. Enjoy the game tonight."

The hearing will take place for conduct "detrimental to the League or game of hockey," the NHL announced.

Stars' owner Tom Hicks released a statement supporting the NHL's decision.

"Had the league not have suspended him, the Dallas Stars would have," Hicks said. "This organization will not tolerate such behavior, especially from a member of our hockey team. We hold our team to a higher standard and will continue to do so."

Avery, who signed a four-year, $15.5 million contract last summer, has 3 goals, seven assists and 77 penalty minutes in 23 games.

Childish. But was it really that bad? Worthy of suspension? The guy is a jerk. You are supposed to ignore childish remarks like that not draw attention to them. The NHL is fueling this guy's fire.

Avery being Avery, nuff said. Everyone is over reacting.

I blame the film crews for this. THEY chose to air that crap. The press is to blame for this. They had the power to save Cuthbert & Dion from embarrassment. Shame on them.

Avery just being himself, and I don't see what he said as that horrible actually. I don't blame the film crews, are YOU kidding me, this stuph is exactly the type of smut their looking for, like TMZ....and no different really. TMZ wishes they had that and the Dallas Owner had to say what he said to protect the integrity of his team and support of the NHL. [][]\_ _

i still enjoy avery....just not when hes on the ice against us

As much as I find Avery entertaining, this was pretty low. It's okay to go after guys in the league but when it gets into personal lives of players that is just wrong. Not to mention how insulting to Elisha Cuthbert.

Ah, Sean. Still have all the class of a colostomy bag, I see. Nice to know some things never change.

"I blame the film crews for this. THEY chose to air that crap. The press is to blame for this. They had the power to save Cuthbert & Dion from embarrassment. Shame on them."

The media has an obligation to show this stuff, besides that was gold for them anyway.

I was kind of upset at first when we didn't resign but ever since the season started I really haven't cared. And as much as I used to like him and the energy he brought, I'm glad hes not on the Rangers

i feel no such sympathy for rismiller and his million bucks a year. he played with no fire during camp, when positions were up for grabs. the bigger issue is sather signing him when tougher player like rutuu, asham etc were available for similar dollars. avery is pi$$ing the wrong people off. he has the whole league, including his outspoken(modano, turco) teammates hating him, and is public enemy number one for the league offices. his career is in jeopardy. he is becoming a pariah. it is not a stretch to say that his next actions may violate his contract to the point where it becomes void. what he said today was calculated and almost seemed rehearsed. that was the outrageous part for me. i still maintain sundin is an answer, but not the answer, but a step in the right direction.the rangers have a lot in their favor to bring him here, hopefully it gets done. my two cents on dubi, is that he handles the puck well, transports it well, stickhandles well, and passes well. that to me is a center. i have some doubts about the gomez-zherdev marriage. they are both better with the puck and i think will clash.

Zippy, Im constantly receiving this error message and the 'hold down the control button" is not working. It's becoming quite tiresome.

Avery speaks his mind and gets suspended. It's really pathetic of the NHL to suspend him for this. Elbow someone in the head and thats ok. Wade Belak can say "someone's going to kill him" about Avery and Belak gets nothing.

The NHL really is becoming a joke. I watched the game on Versus tonight. We have a new rule that a goalie can not play the puck outside the trapezoid. I see, in several game, goalies passing the puck behind the net, and when they do this, the puck is still on their stick when its outside the trapezoid behind the red line. Also, on the same play that Biron did that, Malone gets a goalie interference penalty when he was clearly pushed into Biron. Flyers score on the power play in OT. Game over. Flyers should have been on the PK, but the refs seem to let the goalies get away with playing the puck outside the trapezoid.

And they call the NFL the No Fun League?

This is embarrassing for the NHL. Mike Mottau tries to kill Frans Nielsen and is given 2 games, yet Avery will probably get 5 for enciting an opponent.

C'mon, Bettman. You're a joke. Get real.

the guy is a PUNK and this is exactly the reason the team didnt want him back...no not the stupid comment today but just listen to the way everyone on the team talks about the guy.....he is a side show and a total cancer in the locker room. Unfortunate because he actually has some skills.

Excited to see the mentioned line-up tomorrow night and like the thought of Sundin.

Bring Back Avery!!!!!!

Effigy.....Just "tap" the control key as you hit post. Don't hold it down. Doesn't always work but it works more often than not.

The Avery suspension is a disgrace. One that transcends the obvious idiocy of Bettman and Campbell.

Interesting that Star's owner Tom Hicks should be talking about "high standards".
http://www.utwatch.org/utimco/hicks.html

More interesting that even Mike Modano weighed with his own "moral outrage".
He has obviously grown some since Nagano in 1998.

Hypocrites one and all.

Avery is a low-life but a suspension? If he did something outside of hockey ala Plaxico, then yes, but to get suspended for being a jerk? Come on. I'm a Renney supporter but even I have to admit these line changes are ridiculous and an indication of how much thought was put into bringing in these players. Isn't there supposed to be a plan for how they are going to play together BEFORE they're brought in? Not, let's just sign and trade for all these forwards and figure it out later. Thank God they don't run my business.

Ya think the Stars regret giving Avery a 4 year deal with a complete no trade clause?

If the Stars had any brains they would sign Shanahan.

He is the reason Sean was kept in line the last year and a half, and considering they are stuck with him, may as well sign the only guy who can help bring the two factions of the Stars locker room together.

Avery on one side......

Every other player of the Stars on the other.

Such bs...that gets somebody suspended nowadays? Give me a break... seriously when did this turn into the NFL. Not just saying that because it's Avery either, if ANYONE were to get suspended for that stupid reason I would be upset. Bettman is a joke, not Avery.

I thought the Avery comments were awesome...

The guys is hilarious and loves to stir things up...something this team is missing...

Good job Glen.

Busey,

do you really wish Sather gave Avery a 4 year deal for 4 million a year with a no movement clause like Dallas did?

Dallas would LOVE to go back in time and not do that deal.

Dallas owner Tom Hicks must want to KILL Brett Hull right now

think with your head brutha

Sather offered Avery exactly the deal that Avery should have taken and run.

4 years, 12 million, without a no trade clause, playing in NYC, the place that SAVED his NHL hockey career after virtual exile while he was with Los Angeles.

Those are the facts.

Avery was a moron for leaving NYC and Dallas was even dumber for giving him that lunatic deal.

Wow I'd be surprised if he ends up playing in Dallas after this... he is the Dennis Rodman of the NHL

While Avery's comments were tasteless, it was not worhty of such a blatant over reaction from Gary Bettman. Funny how both Bettman and Cuthbert are Jewish. I wonder if the penalty would have been as severe is she was of a different religion.

The woman makes a living playing hookers and posing nude. She also has a bad rep for cheating as documented in the Justin Timberlake song. A bad over reaction by small Gary.

Funny how the last 3 posts are from the same moron, but 3 different names, and they all say the say stupid comments.

Ughhhhhhhhh

Yes, Avery is a jerk. I have no respect for him and I have never seen the need to insult women after my relationship with them is over. That said, I can also agree that this may be being taken a bit too far by the league... but they're also obviously punishing his history rather than this one incident.

The side of it that I haven't seen anyone mention is the amusing egocentric attitude he has. Of course, we all know Avery on this hockey related forum but does he seriously think that his name is bigger than Elisha Cuthbert's? Freakin' Jack Bauer's daughter and he makes a comment as if her appeal is enhanced by having dated him.
When I talk to friends who are non-hockey fans or even casual hockey fans many of them only know who he is (if they know who he is) because he dated her. He needs a reality check.

Islander505: I've tried everything and I have several problems leaving a post here. I must have tried 5 times this morning.

Not sure what the jew-thing has to do with anything. People love to point out and bash religious/racial/ethnic differences to make themselves feel as if they are superior.

All over the web, I see tons of comments blasting Bettman for suspending Avery. Don't people know that it's Colin Campbell who hands out suspensions ??

Stars owner Hicks said he would have suspended Avery even if the league did not.

You have to take previous actions into context when you determine whether or not Avery deserved a suspension here.

He has gotten into repeated trouble with his mouth over and over the years and been suspended for his mouth before.

This team is in need of a shake up. in need of a top 6 scoring threat, in need of a PP coach.
until then, we'll be booing and hissing at whatever goes wrong with this team.
Many fans will never be happy with this team no matter what they do, fix, win or lose.
I like to call them "closet Islanders fans"

Chad-wick

and I like to call people like you arse-holes!

why is he suspended again?

The NHL has become a joke under Bettman. They make up rules
as they go along. Different rules for different players. You can
start with on ice officials calling penelties for breathing. Now they
get Avary for running his mouth. I'm going to start watching
wrestling, the NHL has gotten so bad.

Zipay, what's with the censorship? See above: former girlfriends. Are you afraid to expose our children to the dark world of locker room humor?
