Between now and July 1...

*Headline inspired by "Between Clark and Hilldale", Love, Forever Changes,

Tying up some personal loose ends today, checking in on the World Championships, (Henrik Lundqvist expected to play tomorrow for Sweden, which he called an underdog with only seven pros; no kidding, the Red Wings are still skating), but let's open it up to continue the post-season discussions...

1. What should Glen Sather do with his free agents before July 1 and why....
Jagr, Shanahan, Avery, Straka, Rozsival, Mara, Malik, et al....and keep the cap in mind.

2. Tom Renney said yesterday that five Wolf Pack players have a chance to make the team in September: Your thoughts on to whom he was referring? Lauri Korpikoski, obviously, is one.

3. The draft is June 20, and the Rangers pick 20th. Who to target? This may require some thought and research, but what the heck were you planning to do today anyway? Read more about Roger Clemens or Barbara Walters?

Seems to me that if RW Jared Staal is still there, I'd be interested. There could be some good-sized D available as well: 6-foot-7 Tyler Myers (Kelowna); 6-4 Colten Teubert (Regina) and some offensive blueliners: Michael Del Zotto (Oshawa) 43-11-34-45; and Yann Sauve.

Let it roll....

Zip,

Jared Staal is projected to go late 2nd round.

Projections are never precise though and if they want to ensure they get Jared and use the 20th pick to take him, well then so be it.

Jared had a horrible rookie junior season in the OHL but made some big strides in his second year.

he is more of a project than any of the Staal brothers, but he projects to be a solid power forward on the wing.

I have a funny feeling that of the Rangers tried to wait until their pick in the second round, someone will already have grabbed him.

It's a tough spot, because there will definitely be players ranked well ahead of him at 20 when the Rangers pick.

I'll start with #2, since I watched them all season and it's the quickest to answer when I should be working... Top five Pack players with a shot at making the roster next season (excluding Hutchinson and Parenteau, since they're both UFAs) are: Korpikoski, Byers, Moore, Potter, Baranka. In my opinion, Korpikoski and Byers have the best shot up front. Potter might have a slight edge on Baranka right now, but it'll come down to how they look in camp. And, of course, whether there are spots available for any of them to slot into.

Either take Jared for the simple reason that he's a Staal brother or take the biggest, nastiest defenseman possible!

Colten Teubert is definitely the biggest nastiest defenseman available projected between 15-20.

The first thing Sather should do is fire Renney. The second thing he should do is fire himself.

1. Jagr - I say dump him. If they keep him it should be a 1 YEAR DEAL ONLY at NOT A PENNY MORE than we paid him this season.
2. Shanahan - He has off ice value but he is done as an impact player. Sorry, gotta go.
3. Avery - Must be signed!
4. Straka - Stick a fork in him. Buh Bye!
5. Roszival - Overrated! Soon to be overpaid but not by the Rangers. Buh bye!
6. Malik - A no brainer. Buh bye!
7. Mara - Sign him and trade him.

It's hard to say about the Pack players. Don't get to see them play. Based on stats and scouting I'll say...
1. Sanguinetti - Don't know if he's ready but I would like to see if he can do what Staal did this year.
2. Hutchinson - His numbers look good and he has NHL experience.
3. Korpikoski - They say he's ready and he looked pretty good the other day.
4. Baranka - Size on defence. Enough said.
5. Anisimov - Another guy who they say is ready. I liked what I saw of him this year.

The draft. Havn't even looked at that yet.

I would also like to see them get rid of Hollweg, Betts and Strudwick to make room for some kids to make the team. Any players in Hartford who are ready for the NHL but the Rangers don't have room for, should be traded while they still have value.

yea Kocur lets trade away all our prospects next season if theyre not ready for the nhl
your a real smart one
"Any players in Hartford who are ready for the NHL but the Rangers don't have room for, should be traded while they still have value"

dumba$$

Does anyone think it's possible that Filatov falls down to us at #20 this year, similar to Cherepanov last year?

I'm still holding out hope that the Rangers will one day ice a Filatov - Anisimov - Cherepanov line. They've all played together, and they looked damned good doing it.

I want Filatov.

Jeff,

Filatov was absolutely dominant in the WJC, I don't see him lasting past the Islanders at 5.

The only way the Rangers could get him is if they trade up.

I think it's next to impossible for the Rangers to trade up in a draft like this top get into the top 5, it would take a lot.

Jagr - keep for one year, at most two, for relatively modest amount, otherwise no.

Shanahan - i think he can still do well on the PP and PK, but not 5-on-5 too much. but he can be replaced

Avery - sign for 3-4 years, hopefully for 3-3.5 million/year at most given his injuries

Straka - still valuable, keep him for another year or two (if he wants to come back) if sather absolutely blows it in free agency.

Roszival - overrated, didnt grow at all this year it seemed, will ask for #1 defenseman money even though he's not even close to it. dont resign

Malik - goodbye

Mara - maybe keep him as a #5/6 guy for a modest amount, or like kocur said, maybe sign and trade him

hollweg - pleaseeeee get rid of somehow

strudwick - just offer him a position behind the bench already

betts - still great on the PK, keep around

as for the free agency/draft/wolfpack guys, i say sather tries to get a big bodied physical d-man to clear traffic. the rangers need that more than an offensive d-man, although finding someone who can do both wouldnt be bad either :)

Jagr they should resign for 1-2yr deal

shanny- I am sorry but the guy was terrible in the playoffs the only thing he did well was penalty kill but five on five he gave the puck away and you cant have him on gomez's wing. Shanny is by far our slowest player in the playoffs and they had him paired with our fastest Gomez!!! Dont resign shanny

Avery- RESIGN NOW

Straka-great guy works hard but refuses to shoot the puck and makes to much money- goodbye

malik- goodbye

rosival- at the right price yes or goodbye

mara-resign but at the right price good 5/6 guy

I think a big question is if Sather is going to go after Marian Hossa to play on Gomez's wing. I know he is going to want around 8 million. For some reason I feel that Sather is going to get him.

Could we have a lineup like this next year????

Avery Dubi Jagr

Dawes Gomez Hossa

Cally Drury Prucha

Shosjtrom Betts Korpo

Stall/Free agency

Tyutin/ Girardi

Mara/wolf pack or free agency

Jon. You took the time to cut and paste my comment and didn't even read it right a$$hole. Any players that ARE READY but the Rangers don't have room for should be traded before they lose their value. ie...Montoya

Next time think before you type A$$HOLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yea Kocur lets trade away all our prospects next season if theyre not ready for the nhl

"Any players in Hartford who are ready for the NHL but the Rangers don't have room for, should be traded while they still have value"

Jagr – Bring him back. He’ll need a LW to play with Dubi-do in the middle. July 1st will revolve around Jagr’s contract price as to what the Rangers will do next. Vyboney? It’s anyone’s guess? I’d rather have Naslund myself (if Jagr stays)

5 from the farm – Korpikoski might be the left wing we’re looking for, just not for Jagr’s line.
Byers – Couldn’t tell you much about him, but his numbers are good.
Jessiman – Rumor has it this kid will be ready in Oct.
Baranka – He’s ready.
Parenteau – LW, the guy had 81pts in 75 games. He’ll get a solid look in camp if they resign him. If not Moore.

Draft day – So many defensemen. Rangers need to find away to draft a winger as high as possible. That list is shorter than normal. Mattias Tedenby would be good, but the Russian kid would be best, Filatov… we’ll need to trade up, wishful thinking? I’d say so. He’s expected to go top 5.
Petrov Kirill would be a nice pickup. Russian under 18 PKer. We’ve got Anisimov and Cherpanov, so why not…
The youngest Staal would be perfect. I guess the only move after getting “The Jared”, would be to get Joel out of Dallas. Family night at MSG???

Jason F - You say to sign Avery now, but he's not in your projected lineup. Smart.

Isn't that Avery on the first line of Jason's projected lineup?

by my count, we have 7 players who are free agents who were regulars for the most part (jagr, shanahan, straka, avery, rosi, mara, valiquette, and what the hell i'll throw in malik). plus dawes & sjostrom are RFAs.

so what is that 10 players to pick up through free agency/resign/bring up from the minors with about 23 million to work with? its going to be tight no matter what, which is why i feel getting both hossa and campbell may not be the best options, maybe one of them if some real good signing deals can take place with the holes the team needs to fill.

while some may disagree with who to sign or for how much, the point is sather can't just throw huge contracts around to two or three players since a lot of holes need to be filled.

Filatov will be taken in the top 5.......guess who picks #5 losers.

Kocur, I agree on almost everything you said. But you forgot some young players in Byers, Potter, Moore and Sauer (when he is fully recovered). And Hutchinson is bad defensively and is soft, he is very similar to Backman, maybe slightly better.

"Any players in Hartford who are ready for the NHL but the Rangers don't have room for, should be traded while they still have value."

I would rephrase it to any prospect that has value and NHL potential, but Rangers have no plans playing (example: Bourret)should be traded.

Jessiman is a joke. No way should he be re-signed. No balance whatsoever. And he can't even light it up in AHL.

Byers is a perfect 4th liner(when you roll 4 lines)--he is big, he hits, he scores, he fights. Basically he is better than Betts, Hollweg, Orr put together.

John, I probably should have re phrased that comment but I figured why bother. The smart people know what I meant.
I didn't list those other Pack players cause I havn't seen any of them play and the Rangers will only have a few spots open in camp.
I had no idea Huthinson was soft. If that's the case, dump him.

Shanny shold look into coaching.

I think we should draft Staal if he's available. I wouldn't draft any d-men, for the fact that they will have to spend some time with the pack to mature.

PLEASE SATHER DONT DRAFT ANY GOALIES!!

I,m queer and I,m here.

I like boys butts in June, how about you...........I like those jocks real smooth, How about youuuu.
