The Morning Skate: Game 3

"Buzzard's breath, the rooster moans
Stow it boy, you're far from home
Stow your sorrows, stow your fear
What'd you do to end up here?
End up on the devil's rusty train...."

---Iron & Wine

Will the Devils' train----and I'm not yet convinced that it's rusted---be derailed tonight at the MSG madhouse?

Who knows? That's the terrific thing about sports: It's unscripted.

The players and coaches (let's hope not the refs) determine the outcome despite whatever superstitions or perceived bad karma is floating around in the ether.

"Emotional control," in coach Tom Renney's words this morning, will be a huge factor, especially in the first period. The Rangers need to be careful about being too jacked up, with penalties providing an opening for the Devils' power play.

“It’s about making sure you are passionate to play, that you’re not allowing yourself to be pushed around, that you are proactive, but you have to be intelligent about it to and recognize that any extracurricular activity could cost you a game if you’re the team in the penalty box. It’s just about emotional control and recognizing that the team comes before any individual.”

Christian Backman was one of the players who didn't participate in the optional skate, and Renney initially joked at my queston about his status, saying that he had a separated shoulder. "Just trying to keep it light." Of course, I saw the Swedish defenseman walking through the dressing room earlier, but ya gotta ask,

Lundqvist, Rozsival, Gomez, Drury, Straka and Shanahan were among the others who opted not to skate, nothing unusual there, Jagr loosened up near the end.

As expected, Renney will roll out the same lineup for Game 3.

Stow it, folks...
Very disappointing.
More from the Garden later...

"Stow it boys."

Well, Steve, not all of us are boys, some of us are women. If you must use the masculine nicknames, at least go with "guys". There are women hockey fans out there, I promise.

try talking about the playoffs instead of Jagr next season. Maybe expose what that newark team has been getting away with for years.

stow the puck in behind brodouer boys!!

All sorts is unscripted, excet maybe the NBA, there is possibly a script going on there. Sort like WWF, hopefully the NHL with Bettamn is not going soen that road by allowing the officiating to determine who wins and loses. Tonight is the night to maintain the emotions and play a patient game allowing the Devils to make the mistakes and have the Rangers counter each mistake. I'm guessing that Steve is doubling as both the Rangers and Devils beat guy. Would like to see a first period lead tonight, making the Devils have to play from behind for longer periods of time. They have to open up when they are behind, shucks scoring 1 per game they probably have to open up period.

Zip -big fan but the Jagr story was bush league...you are better than that!

Since no one else will.... I'm calling it Rangers in 5.

Great band. You should check them out. Imagine if Dylan could play and sing. This guy, Iron and Wine, are real good.

The Jagr story is soft. Ill-timed to say the least.
Just looks like there will be 4 major forward positions to fill this summer. But man, they sure looked good together now.

Hey Steve,

Thanks for the awesome coverage! Initially I didn't like Backman when we got him, since he has a penchant for turnovers, but he has played better of late and seems to be gelling with everyone.

An even bigger surprise has been Sjostrom, who has added some speed, scoring and grit to the 4th line. For so long us fans have complained about the lack of scoring from our 3rd and 4th lines, and now we finally have a balanced set of forward lines.

I have continually been impressed with their young guns - Dubie, Cally, Dawes and Staal. Thay have been important players for us this season ad in the playoffs. We have a bright future ahead of us.
