So much for home-ice advantage...

With the 4-3 overtime win tonight, the visitors have won all three games....

Some quotes and stats that didn't make the paper:

Renney: "We've had some bounces ourselves. We haven't lost to these guys in regulation in 11 games. They did what they needed to do. They had people going to the net. we didn;t have quite the body position we needed. ...I don't think we are going to dwell on this at all like we are completely deflated. We are not."

Dubinsky on the overtime goal: "I won the faceoff there, they got a good jump on it and it is just one of those things. These things happen."

Devs coach Brent Sutter on Sean Avery's face-to-face screening of Brodeur:
"I did have a conversation with the official about it. He did tell me that the next time it happens, it will be a penalty. I was told after he scored so I am not very comfortable with it.:

***
The Rangers were called for 11 penalties, resulting in eight Devils power plays...The Rangers were 2-for-5... Marc Staal, the victim on two of the Devils goals, was on the ice for 26:33, a team high...The last Rangers rookie to score two goals in a playoff game was Ryan Callahan on April 17 of last season in a 7-0 win over Atlanta....Jagr had three assists...In 14 playoff games against the Devils, Marty Straka (two assists) has eight goals and nine assists...The Rangers are off tomorrow...

i really dont like renneys comment about beating them in regulation. he knows u dont get a pt if u go to ot right. brent sutter deal with it, what is wrong with screening a goalie face to face. if u dont touch the goalie, but in broduers case if he doesnt touch u and u get called for the penalty, it shouldnt be a penalty.

why is face to face screening of a goalie a penalty???

How in the world is Avery's screen possibly considered a penalty? Am I missing a rule where hand movements and talking isn't allowed in hockey? As long as he's not touching him (even though Brodeur WAS hitting Avery), what could the penalty possibly be?

I just hate this team so much. Wah wah wah wah wah. What a bunch of whiners. The refs should also be suspended for caving to Sutter's demands and calling an obviously poor game after Lamorillo yelled at them.

The new NHL is a joke. I hope we beat these clowns and Hollweg punches Brodeur in his 3 chins during handshakes. And yes, I said Hollweg because even if he gets suspended we won't need him.

why not give avery a penalty?

i dont buy this hooking, triping, interference junk ....

as i tell my dad after a penalty is called.....

number 16 blue, two minutes for playing hockey

bear in mind who told brent sutter that it would be a penalty next time.. mike hasenfratz has his own rulebook and forgot his contacts..

PLAYOFF HOCKEY AT THE GARDEN TONIGHT!!!!!

How can the refs make things up as they go along? They have been doing so all year. Callahan has a break and is tripped.....and all the TV people and Devils can see is him hitting Brodeur. Of course, if there were no trip, no collision with the goalie. There was of course, no call just like there was none when Marty punched Avery in the face with his catching glove. Not to mention the obvious interference by Pandolfo on the winning goal. Fat Lou whines, the Devils get calls. Coincidence?

The NHL and the Refs get together before the game, the convo goes like this;
NHL - Hi guys, we have a playoff series on national tv tonight. The Rangers are up two games and we're looking to make the series a tiny bit longer for an additional east coast game broadcast in the first round. Check my drift?
Refs - Well McCrooked has the night off Mr. NHL money man. You catch my drift.
NHL- How's 200 each sound.
Refs - That'll only buy you the first period. Add a 0 and you might get to overtime. Catch my drift.
NHL- Make sure the Rangers have every op to lose this game.
Refs- Flip the two upside down and add a zero and we'll do everything in our power to miss major calls on the Rangers all night.
NHL- we never had the conversation.
Refs- oh, yes we did. but don't worry, only New York fans will complain. No one listens to them. no problems. It'll be forgot by the start of the next game.

Are we done now?
Has Lamorello gotten his pound of flesh yet, or are we in for another game of "Colin Campbell Officiating?"

Anyone with half a brain should have expected the calls to go against the Rangers last night after Lamorello's whining. But even I didn't expect to see them going out of their way so blatantly to actively look for ways to penalize the Rangers.

I want to see what's going to happen if they start making up rules on the fly to penalize Avery for screening the goalie.

They continue to prove the NHL has the worst officiating in all of professional sports.

bottom line, we came out completely flat for OT, and they didnt.

avery was hilarious. that ain't a penalty, just creative annoyance. where was $7mill man chris drury? he does what no other player can do in those big games ! puh leaze

what avery did was amusing, but he completely took himself out of the play and basically turned the pp into a 5 on 4. He wasn't watching the play and his stick wasn't on the ice. Notice how he scored the next shift after Drury told him to cut it out. On a 5 on 3 you need everyone ready to put the puck in as we are going to have two open men.

I've been watching the rangers since 1990 and I've never laughed so hard at a game as when Avery was screening Marty. I'm sure the refs will find a way to stop it, either by warning Renney or calling a penalty on it next time, but I loved it.

The officiating/lucky bounces were frustrating, but hopefully it'll calm Sutter from complaining so much and act as a wake-up call for NY. They didn't play too terribly, but they didn't play great (bad clearing attempts, too many penalties) and considering that NJ was playing their best and half of their goals were off Ranger players, it's an indication that NY has the upper hand, they just need to play disciplined and be aggressive.

That was a tough loss last night

From where I was sitting, it was tough to understand what happened on the O.T. goal, all of a sudden the red light was flashing and we were running for the train.

It was a tremendous hockey game even though they lost.

It's a series now, Devils wanted it bad last night, they were desperate and truly deserved the win despite the lucky wining goal.

I am a big Drury fan, love him.

He needs to play better than he did last night.

At least the first two games you could point out the tremendous penalty killing and the fact that they won the games.

Last night is a night where we need Chris Drury to come through.

The penalty killing was bad, he didn't come through with the clutch goal.

We need more from Drury. And we need it starting at 7pm Wednesday night.

I have never ever seen anything like what Sean Avery did last night.

I was sitting close to that end and I noticed him doing it from the moment he got to the crease, unbelievable. The whole Hockey Night in Canada crew is going nuts about it, I don't think Sean is going to be able to get away with it again.

It was just pandemonium in the crowd when he scored the goal right after it.

I thought the officiating sucked. Devils got away with a lot of crap.

Ryan Callahan is a machine.

Rangers will win Wednesday, I have no doubt.

I love Callahan's snarl....

Do you think the Renney and the rest of the coaches also wince like the fans everytime Mr. Softee...er....Backman gives up the puck to avoid getting hit or refuses to clear the front of the net or do they actually believe his "offensive skills" actually warrant keeping "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" in the line-up. I actually think Jeff Bloemberg was tougher than this guy.

Anway, why not give Strudwick a chance in the line-up?

Worst playoff overtime effort ever. FLAT FLAT FLAT!!! No killer instinct at all. They better pick it up if they want to win this series. All 3 games could have gone either way and thats not in the Rangers favor. Fun game to watch but a loss is a loss.

Both of NJ's early goals were
1) Betts not getting puck out of zone, devils charging in, throwing it on net and ironically, hitting betts stick to go in and 2) Staal not getting puck out on PK and devils going abck in, scoring.

Staal and his partner along with Mara / Backman looked lost. I didn't notice if those 4 were changed all throughout the game, but any defensive mistakes involved Staal, Mara, etc. Plus, Rangers d-men have a hard time putting it on net, especially last night.

Avery gets those bogus calls because of the name on the back of the jersey, not because hes doing anything wrong. Anything outside the crease is fair game. So if Avery cuts through the low slot like that or wants to stand in front of the blue painted area, he is allowed to do so. The refs were so biased last night and wanted to be part of that game. In that case like last night, Rangers should have left the tough guy game and resorted to the high speed, fly around guys mentallity. Devils defense is weak and Rangers need to point that out more.

And if Stratka and Dubi look for Jagr one more time when they themselves have an open shot, I'm gonna send Bob after them!

Dubi scored twice last night, he is completely exempt from any criticism as far as I am concerned.

Understand Dude - perhaps Stratka looks to do it moreso than Dubi - Jagr isn't open ALL the time

I noticed a lot of Brodeur coming out of the crease last night. On one Avery penalty, Avery got flipped over (almost looked like a trip) but Avery was penalized. Isn't it not supposed to be goalie interference if he's out of the crease?

And yes the Devils got away with murder, despite the fact that the Rangers made a couple of bad miscues, hence they lost the game.
