My concern is the softness of the Rangers and their farm team. The game has changed to speed and finesse, but, a team like Anaheim showed what toughness is about. I think the Rangers need 2 tough, gritty pick ups.Avery is an agitator, not tough.

What about Hollweg and Orr?

Will Orr dress come playoff time? Is he anything beyond a decent fighter? I loveed him whipping on the Flyers, but, toughness is beyong fighting. Hollweg, like Avery, is a pest. And, he's prone to very dumb penalties. The Rangers have a ton of offensive skill: if you were the opposition, wouldnt you play the body(a la the devils on jagr two years ago) ? I think a guy like Jovo would be phenom. A regular player, tough as nails, that will hammer the other teams skill players if Drury and company are sent flying. When Witt throws an elbow, Orr cant answer the bell because he wont risk a 2 and 5. We need consistent toughness that gets beyond 5 mins of play--guys who can take the corners , clear thee crease, and make the otehr teams realize the Rangers are an all -around team. Sure, we can rent a goon like Godard. But, like Orr, wtf does that do come crunch time? Thats my concern, without taking away from the contributions of the two you mentioned.

I say wait and see. Orr and Hollweg are going into there second seasons, for the most part. There will be inprovement to their games because that's the type of guys they are. With Orty gone, one of them might see the open window as a chance to play a bit more rounded defensive game. Prucha and Callahan are not going to lay down in front of the puck like that kid did. I'm a little off topic. My point is they might suprise us man. Than again we could be looking for this type at the trade deadline.
Tyutin (sp) was great last yr standing guys up on the blueline and crushing blows in the corners at times. AWESOME at some points. If Malik would hit someone, that could be the solution to this situation.

Jovo ain't happening. How exactly are you freeing up the cap space? Get it out of your head. There is plenty of toughness on this team and in the system...for the season. In the playoffs, all you need is people to sacrifice. You can sit your goons and still control tempo. Based on last year it seems they aren't too far away.

In my opinion, the Rangers need to upgrade the D and trim some dead payroll.

When the season start, his salary will go to Hartford, and not count against the cap. That's 3 million. I think the Rangers are at 48 right now, without Peca.
There's room to play. As the rumor involves, Mara, Malik and Montoya.
Mara and Montoya, 5 mill.
Kasper goes to Hartford. now 8 million is cleared. the teams salary will sit around 40 something. roughy.
Looks like theirs room for Jovo after all. But are the Yotes making this deal. Most likely not.

what needs to be done:

1. Gomez is overrated and overpriced and needs to be traded (Jovanovski makes the most sense)

2. Dawes is too small and needs to be traded

3. Betts needs to be traded because he sucks

4. Hossa needs to be traded after 10-15 games, unless he plays great and produces

5. Orr is useless as are all pure goons

6. Jessiman needs to be traded to Ducks, because we will never play him and he just takes a spot away from someone.

7. At least an attemp has to be made at acquiring Joel Lundqvist

8. Pock, Mara and Malik should be traded

9. Montoya needs to be the backup

10. Dubinsky, Moore, Staal, Baranka and Liffiton need to make the team

11. Mara, Betts, and Gomez for Jovanovski, Reinprecht and Lisin makes a lot of sense for both teams

12. Renney is a horrible coach and needs to be replaced with someone who got a clue

13. Kasparaitis should be on the team if he is in good shape and plays well in the camp

14. Valiquette, Strudwick and Hutchinson need to be sent down to Hartford and forgotten there.

15. Peca should be signed for 1 season.

16. trade away all the un-needed prospects for 7th round picks (Immonen, Graham, etc.)

17. sign Potter to NHL contract

18. Shanahan should play LW, preferably with Jagr, he is not a RW and mostly scores from LW.

19. acquire an extra 2nd or 1st round in this deep draft

20. Try to trade up to get a top 3 pick to get Tavares or whoever, preferably center.

1) Gomez is not overrated and he is not overpaid. ALOT of other teams would have paid just as much for him, thus he was signed at market price. So what he only had 13 goals last year. His linemate Gionta was out 20 games last year. Thats alot of Goals as Assists that are harder to come by. Gomez can easily put up 100+ points this year with Jagr.
2) Daws is small but why should we trade him, hes solid?
3) Betts is a very good PKer and a greak 4th line center. He brings speed experience and a good shot. He deff dosent suck and deff dosent need to be traded.
4) You along with alot of other people seem to foget what Hossa did before he goe injured. He played awsome till his injury. I think a Hossa-Gomez-Jagr line wouldnt be that stupid. But lets face it i would rather have Prucha on the ceond line so Hossa will deffinitly be on the third.
5) Hes not usless but we dont need him.

Montoya cannot be the Rangers backup this season for the simple reason that they cannot afford him.

His cap hit is 1.8 million at the NHL level.

The only way he comes up is god forbid, Lundqvist is hurt long term and Henrik's salary wouldn't count on long term injury.

More than likely, Montoya will be traded.

FRANK- good point, although in the offseason we have nothing better to discuss. Even ignorant Isles fans can agree that tinkering later in the season is more fruitful. Will the Rangers have cap space to infuse talent to an area of need in March? Outside of Jagr and the goalie, is there an irreplaceable guy who if injured would derail our dreams? Peca has shown life in the playoffs, and Sather may be looking that way. So much will change between now and playoff time. I still think a crease clearer is needed--with the skill inherent on this squad, wouldnt the opposition be best served to play VERY physical and test our D depth? Wouldnt teams target the skill positions? Thus, my call for grit which also comes cheaper. No, not Orr grit. Real grit.Simon , although a TOTAL arse for last years stick performance, is a 750g salary, can score and play tough. I like that idea for the Rangers. I think Asham to the Devils as Zip reported was financially a wise way to add grit. I just dont see Orr playing in crunch time.

I had dinner with someone last night who said that Allison wants to be a Ranger(and he's in the "know") If he plays this year, dont be shocked at a trade deadline move. Also, if Averys value goes up, its possible the Leafs or even the Kings could take him and give up alot!

No more Peca updates today, Yay! Avery back to LA would seem a stretch since apparently he rubbed that orginization the wrong way big time but u never know. Bottom line guys Im ready to go to war with this team as is...but adding a Defenseman at some point would be a priority

i dont understand why no one wants Avery on this team. Heres a guy that can put up 50+ points this year and instigate alot for this team. Hes an instant fan favorite, everybody loves him why does everyone on this blog hate on him so much?

I dont hate Avery, I think he will be a key component to this team succeeding this yr, especially after the arbitration ruling I dont think he's going anywhere and that's a good thing...was just responding to Jim in saying he's most likely not going back to LA.
