« Hossa re-signed | Main | Avery update »

Pieces of the puzzle....

August is upon us and questions remain unanswered...
If Avery's salary arbitration number is reasonable and the Rangers don't walk, the roster puzzle is becoming more complete.
Jagr, Drury, Gomez, Straka, Shanahan, Prucha, Hossa, Betts, Callahan, Hollweg and Orr are signed.
Will there be room and playing time for Dawes and Dubinsky? Bourret or Anisimov?
If the Rangers don't land Peca, obviously Dubinsky will have a better shot at sticking, right?
Or should the Rangers be tempted by another free agent center: Forsberg, Allison, Vasicek, Bulis? Someone's going to get these guys cheap.
And how about trades?
Rumors persist that Jovo and Redden might be on the radar, but some salary would have to go the other way.
Rozsival and Tyutin are keepers; Girardi needs to continue his growth; Mara and Malik will be UFAs after the season; their days may be numbered. Hutchinson is a mystery. Should Pock get consistent playing time or be moved?
Will Staal initially be sent down for more seasoning?
Is anyone but me a little concerned about Vally as a backup to Henrik?
Camp will be intriguing. One thing for sure, the opening-night roster won't be one that ends the regular season.
Never happens.
But let the speculation begin....

i think they should bring up montoya to backup lunny... i think this team is solid all around.i like mara, can do without malik.

Malik is underrated. He has a huge slap shot and is the best pk guy on the team

What next? Chris Simon representing the Rangers at Ryan Hollweg's arbitration hearing. They should have just let Asham represent them in mine. I think I would have been better off. What the f%#ck did I ever do to Slatts? So what if I'm an A-hole, they knew that when they traded for me. I am what I am but c'mon where's the love Slatts?

You all miss the point. Avery once ate steak and now its pb and j. Lets all celebrate Monday Night which is Pizza Box Night. Thank you for all the thoughts and preps. They pay off big time.

I call up Sather, I say ” be nice to Comrade Avery. Why you callink him not nice things in your brief”
Then Sather say “who is this speakink?”
I say “it’s me boss! Kaspar from hartford”
He tell me, “you are very lucky not to go to arbitration this year dumkoff. Take your 3 million, play with kids and don’t piss me off”
I say, “just kidding this not Kaspar, this that guy Malakov. goodbye”

Steve...

1) It's time to filter comments on this blog. Let people get into online fights at other sites.

2) I don't think Valiquette is a bad backup, but why not let him and Holt be a tandem in Hartford, and bring Montoya up here to see what he has?

Rotate Val and Montoya throughout the season. Move Malik, Mara or Kasper for the cap room. Staal can fill if needed. Let Dubinsky play center, or rotate that postion too. Unless Allison wants to play for a mil.

LOL - avery's girlfriend makes more money than him. so sad. He's not even the breadwinner. How many professional athletes can say that? What a loser

Yes, I am sure you are making over a million a year, playing hockey and banging Elisha Culbert.

If that is the definition of a loser, I wish I was a loser.

I'll try to put a comment in here before the imposter wakes up.....

There was a lot of talk from people saying that they didn't think the Rangers would be able to afford both Hossa & Avery.

Well, Hossa signed for a mere 780K yesterday.

I don't know how Sather pulled that one off, you would think he would have gotten at least a little more than that from an arbitrator.

I think Hossa is going to keep improving and is one of the more exciting things to look forward to this coming season.

As far as Avery goes, is this the longest wait for an arbitration ruling ever???

I really fear him getting an award of 2.6 million and Sather walking away. Getting pretty anxious waiting for this thing to finally play out.

"I really fear him getting an award of 2.6 million and Sather walking away. Getting pretty anxious waiting for this thing to finally play out."

Glen wouldn't walk. He would take it and trade to Edmonton. They seem to be making some really dumb descisions lately.

Just to set the NYR Cap situation straight. They are currently at $53.5 million, above the $50.3 Cap, but within the allowable 10% over allowed during the off-season. The $53.5 figure includes salaries of Marc Staal, Ryan Callihan & Steve Valiquette. It also includes Kasparitis' $3 million+ and Shanahan's bonus of $2.8 million, which he will easily reach. The bonus amount can be deferred to next year & if they farm Kasparitis, the team figure drops to between $47 & $48 million

Bringing up Montoya to back up Lundqvist would be a bit counterproductive to his development. Packaging Montoya with one of the current NHL-roster d-men (Malik? Pock? Kasparitis maybe?) to a team in need of a "future" goalie and light on back-end defense for either a pick or a veteran backup who would be reliable whenever he'd spell Lundy. Kind of like Weekes, only better and not in such need of being starter.

During the last 2 seasons, Montoya has played well-to-exceptionally well at Hartford. I don't think another full AHL season will add to his "development". "Now" is the time to bring him to the next level. Also, with the way the AHL schedule is structured, he could always "shuttle" back & forth.
