Mark Messier isn't throwing his hat in the ring for Don Maloney's job.
In an interview on WFAN this afternoon, Messier, working the Finals for Versus, said that the job would be very time consuming and at this stage in his life, he wasn't ready.
So the logical list of in-house candidates now includes Gord Clark, Jim Schoenfeld and longshot Adam Graves.

Gord Clark is the chief scout of the Rangers, much more logical than Adam Graves or definitely, Mark Messier.
I have never seen an assistant GM job have more speculation and more written about than this one in any sport.

This is all becoming a bunch of nonsense.
I don't think it's "a bunch of nonsense". It simply reflects the perception (valid or not) that Sather delegated most of the leg-work to Maloney. It also reflects the perception (valid or not) that Sather's hockey judgement is questionable. So the speculation level is the same as if the GM job itself was up for grabs.
The nonsense is that an assistant GM's job is to do legwork such as fly to Europe and watch the junior championships or fly to Russia and watch a Russian we drafted in the 6nd round and not fly and meet Sather out in Banff and play golf.
Mark Messier is never gonna do that kind of stuff, so the thought of him becoming the assistant GM is total B.S.
Gord Clark is someone who will do that kind of stuff because he already does that kind of stuff being the head of their scouting department. He is the only one who makes sense.
Now, can this stanley cup final get over quickly so the offseason can begin please??
