Goaltender interference

Has the D.A. been called yet?

Anyone for sarcasm?

Two Islanders "ice girls' are accusing the Rangers of inappropriate behavior during TV timeouts. We have a story on newsday.com and in the paper tomorrow.

The Rangers aren't commenting. The officials didn't penalize anybody. The league wants everybody to just get along.

Should Henrik Lundqvist have reacted as alleged by hitting the squeegee with his stick after the girl hit his stick?
Probably not.

But if there was a potential problem with Lundqvist, a recidivist TV time-out crease-blocker, shouldn't the Islanders have alerted officials prior to the game? Lundqvist, whom I spoke with before the allegations were known said no one, at any arena, ever asked him to change his routine, which involves looking at the ice on the edge of the crease, basically, to keep his game focus.

Spitting or squirting water---accidential or intentional---from the bench isn't acceptable.

Cursing?

Well, I bet the girls have heard something similar during road-rage on the Cross-Island Parkway.

It's all unfortunate.

But it raises the question of why trios of bare-midriffed young ladies are swirling around to perform a job efficiently handled without fanfare by rink personnel in many arenas. Yes, at some arenas and at the Coliseum, male fans ogle the girls in what passes for "entertainment" during TV timeouts.

Confession: I'm usually typing during timeouts so I don't even notice.

So I'll ask: Should the "Ice girls" even be dressed up and shoved out for display in the lion's den?

Your thoughts....

I saw "ice girls" at the Ducks' arena when I went to see the Rangers this season.

For the love of God, Steve, tell me this wasn't your editorial decision to actually want to contribute to what amounts to yellow journalism at its finest.

What's next? Reporting on the fights in the stands? Is Newsday that desperate to create a story?

this is so stupid ... not your report on it Steve but that it's even an issue ... they have those stupid "ice girls" at the Panthers games down here and the thing is .. Henrik CLEARLY stays in his crease and doesn't like to move so WHY would those dim-witted(they must be) women/girls go near him when he's clearly NOT MOVING out of their way? Why would they come close to him?

Whatever ... I'm a woman and I could careless if their feelings were hurt by whatever remarks were made, they are paraded out there for the entertainment of some male fans and they should not go up to players that clearly don't want them near their space ...

Real teams dont need ice girls or mascots...

It's all about selling papers...

Hey Logan,

Maybe you should write an article about how the Islanders hire young teenage girls, dress them in skin-tight, half-naked uniforms, and parade them around in front of thousands of drunken men for the sole purpose of being eye-candy for Islander fans' entertainment. At the Garden, the TV-timeout ice cleanup is done by mid-aged male crew in regular working clothes and a pee-wee hockey player in a helmet and Rangers jersey. No cheap, classless, sexual entertainment that would be the highlight of a pedophile's day. Your reporting is disgustingly biased and you've disgraced Newsday.

And if you don't want to report that, show some journalistic integrity and talk about how the Islanders are going to miss the playoffs, instead of whining about the "Rags."

And Hey Steve,

Don't let this BS stand. If Logan is going to print an article about this crap, then you should respond in kind.

Very nice Steve.

Your officially a disgrace just like Logan and Jim.

Done with these blogs, done with this site and done with this paper.

If I wanted to read a raggy paper I would read the Daily News at least they don't kid themsleves and know they are worthless.

I don't blame Henrik. I wouldn't wan't those bimbos trying to force me out of my own goal crease either. Those idiots on ice are just trying to make a big deal out of nothing. They were probably just annoyed that they were getting a "hard time" from the opposing team and blew the whole thing out of propotion with accusations of god only knows what. Waaaaaah Waaaaaah. What a bunch of stuck up little whiners. If I were Henrik I probably would have slashed the squeegee right out of her hands...give her something to really complain about.

Steve,
This is getting blown way out of proportion. It's becoming a he said/she said fire, and people like Logan, with an apparent assist from you, are fanning the flames.
PLEASE STOP!!!
They have played 4 games now in the hole-in-the-ground called Nassau Coliseum, and these girls (was there a new one on last night?) wait until the last one to change how they clean the snow in a TV timeout. I was there last night with my family (my two daughters are furious and think the girls don't belong there) and this girl obviously crossed a 'line'. She should know to stay out of the crease unless the goalie has vacated it. No other arena crew in the NHL that I know of, certainly not MSG, makes a goalie move during a snow cleanup. Some goalies move all the time on their own when these timeouts occur. Others, like Henrik, stay in the crease through about half of them. If they are doing that job, they should know the boundaries and customs.
The reason it's being blown out of proportion is the fact that they are young girls and they are dressed in 'revealing' costumes. Ths would not even be a 'story' (and I use that term loosely) if a regular male crew had done the same thing. This also comes across as someone wanting their 15 minutes of fame.
If they want to keep the girls doing the job, put them in regular team jerseys, or in whatever uniform the rest of the arena's ice crew wears. What they wear and how they do their job now is NOT entertaining. It is distracting, and therefore should go. The game action itself is the entertainment. Leave snow cleaning to the professionals.

I pretty much agree with Anonymous's assessment on the parade of girls (not yet women) out there as eye-candy. As an art director at a magazine, I also don't believe it's a story, but I understand its being published. Sex sells. Victimization sells more.

As a post-Steinem feminist, I believe girls over 21 may exercise their choice to parade around in midriff-baring, tight Lycra. God bless 'em. Perhaps these young ladies ought to be reminded by whoever is signing their checks that these men are hockey players and not Boy Scouts. This is not Augusta.

That said, as a rabid hockey fan and season subscriber, seeing those girls was an insult to me. I'm not at the game for titillation and I'm not alone. It's pandering to the worst kind of fan and not the demographic Bettman is praying for. When MSG had sexual harassment problems with their ice girls and management before the lockout, I was DELIGHTED to see them—and their tale of woe—quietly melt away like the ice in June. There are plenty of places for the lewd to watch whatever tickles their fancy, but an NHL arena is not one of them. It's insulting to women, insulting to the fpaying customers' intelligence and insulting to the best sport on the planet.

If these girls have some skating talent, they should contact USAHockey and get in the game rather than being nothing more than tarted-up janitors. Dream big, girls.

Thank you and I'm stepping off the soapbox. Next!

This is just a compleatly stupid thing to be even talking about. Lundqvist tapped her squeegee and off she goes crying!? This is the NHL remove girls that are only there to drag in fans, its a discrase.

When the Ice Girls and the Dragon Mascot go out on the ice after a win, I laugh.

It's not a real team. They need to get fans in and they think the Ice Girls can market the team.

Agreed, if it was a 17 year old male in wind pants and a zipup jacket, no one would care. It's a girl looking for her 15 minutes and 15 million.

hmm. respect? does anybody know what this word means anymore? no matter what, somebody doesn't deserve to get spit on, or slashed when they are trying to do their job. lundqvist likes to stay in the crease? the godsend can't move over four feet so they can do their JOB? can't believe the mindsets of you people. nobody deserves to get spit on for doing their job. period. end of discussion. you ranger fans are an absolute disgrace...especially those of you that call yourselves "women." (robby)

Islander fans are something else (making this out to be watergate or even the Simon incident)

BTW - there are more NYR fans on LI than fishstick fans - sorry Isles fans but thats the fact.

Went to the game and can not believe how little they show of out of town scores. On the little area they show it they very quickly show advertisements when play stops so if you want to know a score you have to look while play is going on. As a Long Islander I feel like the whole scene at the Coliseum is 3rd rate and more like a midwestern minor league town.

Hey anonymous, your comments about comparing the Ice Girls to pedophilia is a joke. These girls are all over 18 and dressed just as well as any cheerleader in any other sport. Let's be honest here, I'm sure that there are many middle aged men who get more of a thrill from watching these girls than they do from their wives. Sex is entertainment and it always will be, just stop making it like it's pornography when it really isn't. It's not cheap and it's not classless, and I'd rather watch some sexy women that some old fat guys cleaning the crease.
Not only that, but no one deserves to be spit on or have the shovel whacked out of their hand. Stop being a barbarian for a second and have some respect. They're just trying to do their job.

Oh yeah, and LI den, may I ask you what a snow cleaning "professional" is? I'm sure any guy with two hands and two legs can shovel some snow out of a crease. And just because you don't find it entertaining doesn't mean it should be removed. Young women in skimpy clothes is and always will be entertaining. Especially for drunk men.

this is the most rediclous article i have ever read. is this even important? why dont you write an article about the game? because im sure no one cares about half ass alligations execpt feminists an the bimbos that clean the ice. they probably just wanted to see there name in the paper. i wrote alot more like every one elese but just erased it because argueing it is just as upsurd as the whole article is. the article should be deleted of newsday

Hey 'anonymous' who commented that the Garden has 'professionals' to do the job? The Rangers USED to have ice girls too until one of them filed a sexual-harrassment lawsuit a few years back:

www.outtengolden.com/News/Article/?ARTICLE_ID=26

And please, there are cheerleaders like this in every sport, it's called ENTERTAINMENT.

Oh my lord, people who actually claim it's a 'discrase' to have cheerleaders, the NFL is infinitely bigger and has had cheerleaders for the past 30-something-odd years.

What is with you people getting agitated over a story about this?

Meanwhile, it's OK for thousands of grown men to get falling-down-PISSDRUNK at a hockey game and yell obscenities at hockey players with children around?
That's way more offensive.
People, get a GRIP.

Avery should be suspended. If he spit on an official he would be gone from the game.

Henrik responded with someone hitting him, by using his stick to hit them back. Hmmm, didn't simon do that? I say suspend Henrik for 35 games!! The girl is lucky. The stick hit her in the stomach!!

Steve Zipay badly needs to go back to covering the media and not a team, his credibility here is as bias as is his hatred of the Islanders.

This is not a hockey issue, it's a work issue and these woman have a job to do that is required by the league rules.

Of course Zipay here acts like a Rag homer who maybe wants to work for Msg and sells his team when he should look at it like someone doing this to one of his kids who has a job and is abused.

How can Rag fans and their beatwriter dilude themselves like this. Four games at Msg and there were so many Islander fans and empty seats it looked like we were the home team most of those games our fans were so loud vs the corporate Rag fans. Most opposing fans are so loud at Msg this season and last it's been pathetic.

I hope these woman sue the Rags, Flukeqvist and Dolan which is a common theme for any woman who has any contact with Dolan's joke garden. See the Rag's ice city dancers which got Times reporter Jason Diamos fired for being part of what happened and a woman named to take his spot in Lynn Zisner for a paper that no longer covers Rag hockey on the road most games.

The Isles have to be saddest team in professional sports. They got bad press when their player swung his stick like Paul Bunyon because he couldn't take a hard check. Now they have to run this story. They are a second rate organization. In a rush to sell tickets they send their barely dressed bimbos on the ice so the hillbillie Islander fans can get a look at what a pretty girl looks like. Bands, Ice Girls, Sparky...... is this a hockey team or a circus act? Well, judging by attendance figues (worst in the league)... its not working, LOL!

If there was any doubt that Sean Avery is an idiot with a personality disorder, it has been completely removed.

Lunqvist is a punk, and the Rangers are a joke. Remember when they had their own Ice Girls? But they had had to get rid of them cuz they were being sexually harasses. Yea the Rangers are a real "CLASS" organization! NOT!

Just to clear up any confusion on the meaning, I just googled "Class" and a picture of Chris Simon came up.

I was sitting in Section 113 Row B and saw the entire incident happen in front of me. The ice girls were attempting to clean the ice around the goal. Henrik Lundqvist was in his usual contemplative crouch position. He does this during the majority of TV time outs.

I did not see him swing his stick. I did not see the Ice Girl recoil in pain from any proported contact. In fact, she continued to pursue her objective against the immobile Lundqvist. I saw no animation on the part of Lundqvist until an official came over to speak to him. I saw the ice girls standing around the back of the cage. None looked injured or exhibiting any outward signs of being in pain.

I will testify to this in a court of law if such testemony is required.

We Americans certainly have our priorities skewed. Lamenting the presence of WOMEN in more clothing than you see at the beach or even the mall, while celebrating a sport with rabid, drunken fans whose bloodlust can only be sated when a fight breaks out on ice is laughable. Calling someone who appreciates the beauty of a woman over 18 a pedophile is disingenuous at best. Women are beautiful and violence is disgusting. That's the way it should be. Any other view is psychologically troubling. In America, sex is dirty and violence is celebrated. That, my friends, is a sad state of affairs, and any feminist who considers a fight where a hockey game breaks out the greatest sport in the world while denigrating women who are enjoying their lives is not truly a feminist and certainly not a humanist. So lets put sex back in the closet where the Ted Haggards of the world lurk in some hypocritical, meth-fueled den of iniquity and kick the s*it out of each other, because that is healthy and normal and certainly our birthright. Should she try to move a big lug out of the way? Probably not. I realize keeping a little black puck out of a net must take 100 percent of a professional's resources, as I could not do it, but it certainly seems civility and normal discourse take their leave in any sports arena. If you and I fought the way athletes do in public we risk arrest while they foment adulation. Repeat after me: Sex between consenting adults is healthy and good. Violence is bad. Oh yeah, and the Ice Girls are friggin' hot!

I can't begin to thank you enough, Mr. Zipay for your comments. I have been a season ticket holder for the past five years and have been complaining every year about each of the items you've listed (bombardment of noisy ads; the Ice Girls; etc.). If I wanted to see the Ice Capades, I would buy tickets. The focus is never about the Islanders; there is always something going on that distracts from the game and the team. I have been to many other arenas over the past several years (Nashville; Buffalo; Montreal; the Garden) and at those games to get absorbed into the feel of being at a professional sports event. It's an absolute embarassment going to games at the Coliseum. Maybe now that this shameless Ice Girls display has been brought to the attention of the NHL, something will be done about it.

ha. Wow, this is the first time I've read a hockey article all year. Leave it to hockey players to be morons and spit on people. what do you expect, cmon, its hockey for crying out loud. I didn't anyone still paid any attention to the NHL.

Front Page?? Please....whatever yoiur feelings this wouldn't be much if it wasn't splattered on page one. Please don't become the NY Post.

Also, be real fishsticks--this is Icelander PR mavens trying to bury the Chris Simon embarrassment. Nothing more.

Lundquist should be suspended for a minimum of 30 games...using your stick on a teenaged girl is certainly more despicable than what Chris Simon did...and at least the Ice Girl didn't roll around the ice crying like Hollweg did.

Personally, I think the Ice Girls are hot. Great fun!

zipay - why does that even matter? these girls are former competitive ice skaters who are in college and just trying to make a buck. they also sometimes perform routines on the ice. do you think the game operations people force them to wear that stuff? i'm sure they like it just fine. if you're so against that, then i guess there is no room for female cheerleaders or dance teams who wear short skirts and are the subject of male attention during other sporting events. zipay get a clue, you're a pighead idiot.

Ice Girls are a joke, people just laugh at them. Why does the Islanders have strippers to clean the ice? That's what they are not entertainers but stripper maids on ice. Pathetic! I'm glad Lundqvist told them to go away,he's trying to win a hockey game! These bimbos make the game cheap, and sad. Now they are trying to get their ugly faces in the media to get some attention.

In reference to Rucchin20's comment:

"godsend can't move over four feet so they can do their JOB?"

Um, 31 other franchises manage to clean the ice while he's in the crease but this washed up ho can't? let's be frank for a second please, who do you think should reign supreme on the ice during a hockey game? A wanna be Hooters waitress or an all star goalie? If he doesn't want to move from the crease and she cant properly clean the snow away, perhaps they should give the job to the rink personnel as is done in the other 31 arenas? just a thought.

I have to laugh at those posters who state that these girls were "just trying to do their jobs", as if it was some essential function they were performing. If that's the case they should form a union and negotiate a collective bargaining agreement with the league that governs how incidents such as this one should be addressed.

The best comparison I can think of to describe the function these girls perform is a ball girl in tennis. I, myself, was a ball boy during Pro Tennis tournaments when I was a kid. We were trained on how to do our jobs, and that training included instruction to avoid, at all costs, any unwanted interaction with the players and to accommodate them in every way. What's more, if a player directed any anger at all at us we were not to respond in any way.

In tennis, at least, it seems that the game is always of primary importance. Pity that does not seem to be the case for Islanders hockey games. If it was, these girls would be fired for interacting with and distracting the players from the game, and their replacements would be instructed on how to conduct themselves appropriately.

Can you imagine a ball boy telling a tennis player to please move out of the way so he can throw the ball from the net back to the ball boy standing by the baseline? Why should this be any different.

How about this...

They get paid per game or performance, other occupations that get paid the same way:

Strippers
Hookers
Clowns
Strippers
Magicians
Hookers
Day Laborers
Strippers
Hookers

Yea they are model citizens. Get a real job then complain about the atmosphere you work in!

Hey rags fans, you had ice girls too, remember? But then again most of you couldn't remember what you had for breakfast! Hows this for a class organization (rags)...MSG had to fire all their ice girls just to make a sexual harrassment lawsuit go away. Funny how that quietly just went away and now the the rags holy rollers complain about the Isles Ice Girls. Every major sport (college, high school and pro) has scantily clad cheerleaders and but all of sudden its a big distraction and in bad taste for the Islanders to have them. How conveniently hypocritical.

This is the media making the Isles look petty.

Personally, I would never have bothered to go to the league. Although, spitting is disgusting, I would have had someone from the Isles call up someone from the rags & just say,

"Listen, tell henry & sean to grow up & stop being J.O.'s..." Period. That's it. THEN next year, I'LL clean henry's crease. I'll ram the squeegee up his ass. Sure I'll get the **** kicked out of me, BUT my point is made. No?

all the girls are/were competive skaters. Cleaning around the crease is a league rule. Explain to me how they are a distraction to the game!!!!!
And.. I'm a ranger fan!!!!
spitting disgraceful

Good, put your daughter through college!

But to me it's not just a matter of not moving...what's up w/the spitting? The cursing? The whacking of the squeegee w/the goalie stick? Mind you a squeegee held by a 18/19 year old girl weighing at best, 110lbs?

This whole thing really is a minor issue. However, IF it was a male maintenance guy doing the squeegeeing, you can bet henry moves outta the way, WITHOUT the school yard rhetoric either.

To the guy who called me out... Um... I didn't say that. It was the person below me.

Yeah we ALL know about msg & their dancers & women being Sexually harrassed by msg brass!!!

Flukequist kept building up a lot of ice along the goal line, Last time I checked a goalie can't dol that & that's what the ice girls OR whoever do, REMOVES the ice build up..

Now if Flukequist wants to be a DW to women doing a job that is done by MANY in the nhl during time outs, that's fine, but pushing their squeege away with his stick & other nyr players spitting on women!!! then you got a problem, BTW I hear the spitter was sean avery,a well known P O S by his peers in the nhl....

THANKS FOR STATING THE OBVIOUS. GO BUY A CLUE. ENJOY THE GOLF

Shouldn't you Crylander fans be crying about the looming absence of playoff hockey at the Mausoleum?

Crylander fans.....now thats pretty funny.1983,your now going on 25 years of putrid hockey!

To the poster that thinks Lundquist should be suspended 30 games.....you're an idiot.
it's no wonder you are an loser Icelander fan.Enjoy watching the RANGERS in the playoffs!

"Avery should be suspended. If he spit on an official he would be gone from the game.

Henrik responded with someone hitting him, by using his stick to hit them back. Hmmm, didn't simon do that? I say suspend Henrik for 35 games!! The girl is lucky. The stick hit her in the stomach!!"

You're obviously a complete idiot.

PROVE SOMEONE SPIT ON THE TWIT!

NHL WONT TOUCH IT, WHAT DOES THAT SAY?

OH...I KNOW

ITS ALL PART OF THE BIG CONSPIRACY TO KEEP DOWN THAT GREAT ISLANDERS TEAM. NO PLAYOFF TO LOOK FORWARD TO AND THE OFF SEASON WILL BE A NIGHTMARE.

AT LEAST THERE IS GOLF!

Hey "anonymous".35 games?
Everytime you type something here you look more and more like a moron!
As a penality for being such a moron you should be sentenced to watch all the Islander home games next year....41 games of putrid hockey.Maybe you can invite an icegirl over to the trailer park to watch the NEW YORK RANGERS in the playoffs....Again!

BEAT YOUR WIFE POTVIN.....BEAT YOUR WIFE.
Now thats a classic!

I've never seen a bunch of fans cry like Islander fans do.Why do Islander fans cry so much? Is it the poor building that they are forced to watch their home games in? Is it the fact that their team is treated like second hand citizens when compaired to the Rangers? What is it Islander fans?

All I know is you have a bunch of half naked woman skating around the ice while their fans are chanting D P. You do the math.

Since neither of the goalies is married, the Islanders keep the Ice-Sluts around so Coach Teddy has somebody to bang.

newsday is a huge disappointment. I already cancelled my subscription so I can read real news. Chris Simon almost kills Hollweg in a brutal attack and there's a little tiny article in the back of the paper. If Hollweg were an Islander, Simon would be in jail and Ryan would still be whining like an ice girl about how offended and hurt he was. If Islander fans had half a brain between them they'd be dangerous. Oh wait, no they wouldn't, they'd still be whiny and pathetic, and newsday would justify it on the front page. Hey, I got an idea, put the whiny ice girls in goal next season to try to distract the players from scoring instead of just trying to distract the goalie. The washed up figure skaters would be better than Dunham. New headline, "Rangers make the playoffs, Islanders throw a tantrum", at least it's real news instead of slander on the front page. Islander fans should never again use the word 'class' for anything. Get over it, maybe you'll make the playoffs next year

henrik shouldnt have to change something he does everygame for these ice girl who wanted him to move when they know that henrik doesnt move . i think henrik did the right thing after the ice girl it his stick

i henrik shouldnt have to change something he does everygame for these ice girl who wanted him to move when they know that henrik doesnt move . i think henrik did the right thing after the ice girl it his stick. the new york islanders just did this beacuse there desperate to get into the the play-offs so they made this a big deal just to get henrik off his game.GO RANGERS!!!!!

If they are from Long Island, they are ICE KUNTZ! Their mothers taught them how to be ICE KUNTZ and they will always be ICE KUNTZ!!!!!!!!!!!! Ching-Chong Islandah owner eat dog for lunch and dinnnah! Want build sheeeety buildings on Wrong Irand! Must go visit Harold Kumar in jail and stay there!!
