Streit smarts

Here are some highlights of new Isles defensemen Mark Streit.

Admittedly, I don't know a lot about this player.

I understand he had points in the same range as some of the higher-end defenseman, but didn't Montreal have a really good powerplay last year? Was he the beneficiary of the powerplay, or the other way around? Either way it does not seem likely for him to have the same kind of offensive output that he did with a talented PP unit last season.

Also, he is smallish and seems one-dimensional. To me this is suspiciously like the player we traded away in Bergeron... Small, puck mover, good shot, plays almost exclusively on the powerplay? Hopefully he's not a mental prancing-boy and can hold up his defensive responsibilities better than bergeron, but at 4 plus a year? That's a lot of loot for something it seems to me we had about 90% the same player last year and traded him for nothing.

Yes I understand those that will say he's than Bergeron but is he THAT much better? I think his TEAM was better. We'll see.

I did notice Garth say that he "Solves our Power Play". Garth, honestly, you're just a goddamn idiot. The power play needs a GREAT DEAL more "solving" than adding this one small pointman before its anything that the opposition will worry about.

Another observation, he is a player that "We targeted from the Beginning", according to our savant GM. It seems that Bailey and the other 4th liners we got on draft day were "targets" from the start, too. Has anyone else noticed this phrase popping up rather frequently? Its almost as if Garth is going out and getting everyone that he "targeted form the beginning", like everything is happening according to his master "plan".

Or, it could be one of those PR-department phrases, which he's been instructed to use as frequently as possible, so as to give the impression that he has some kind of idea of what he's doing. That's where my money is at.

You never send a boy to do a man's job, and you never send a backup goaltender to do a GM's job... My mantra.

Wings Signed Hossa. 1 year/ 7Mil

Avery signed by Dallas. Glad we did not go after him. He is more trouble than he is worth.

Querry? If the Isles are after Doug Weight does that mean that they know Sillinger is not coming back. Perhaps Snow realizes that Sillinger is retiring due to his hip problem. It's something I would keep quiet until all the cards were played out.............Sir William

HEY FREI - GREAT POST - I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU

Streit looked good on a team with Kovalev, Koivu, Higgins, Markov, Kostisen - the Islanders have no creative offiensive players like that. I would rather have signed Hainsey, or trade for McCabe or Kubina instead. Did Snow ever see this guy play or just look at his stats, he is horrible in his own end just like MAB....and I am calling it now he won't even put up 30 points next year

Avery off the Rangers...That is a TREMENDOUS loss for them....I do not care what anyone says...No secret I hated him and his antics more than anyone, but the numbers DO NOT LIE !!! They were a much much better team with him in the lineup.

I in no way wanted him on our team as he would not fit on a team rebuilding....The Rangers however will miss him dearly !

we got a playmaker, now we need a finisher

Frei: Can you be any more negative and pessimistic? Why do you even bother following the team? You yoourself said you don't know alot about the player, but then went on a rant about how bad a pickup he is. And by the way, we got a third round pick for Beregeron and you can look at who we picked in the third round and check back in three years to see what we got.

We needed a PP QB and we desperately needed someone to help our transistion game. He helps both. He is only 30 years of age, and 4 Mill is a drop in the bucket compared to the other D-man that got signed yesterday.

We don't even know what the opening night roster or line combo's will be so how could you judge our PP when you don't even know what forwards will be on it?

Your entitled to your opinion, but I get sick of all the negativity sometimes.

Streit captained Switzerland's hockey team at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin, Italy.

Streit was nominated by the Canadiens' for the Bill Masterton Trophy by the Montreal chapter of the Professional Hockey Writer's Association.

The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey.

I don't really care how Montreal used Streit. I'd say we got a pretty good player.

Kevin T.

McCabe over Streit? You must be crazy!!!!!!!! That is the most ridiculous thing I have read. Do your homework.

Steady: I couldn't agree more. That is a big loss for the Rangers. But in some weird way I will miss the intensity he brought to the rivalry. Much like when Pedro left the Red Sox, it took an element away from the Yanks and the Sox rivalry.

Lets see, what Ranger can I direct my hatred too now?
