Islanders coach Ted Nolan made the boldest decision of his two-season tenure this morning when he announced backup Wade Dubielewicz will be in net against the Rangers tonight at Nassau Coliseum with franchise player Rick DiPietro fresh and ready to go on the bench.
Asked if he has a schedule for DiPietro’s return after a break to tend to family matters or simply plans to go with the hot hand, Nolan smiled and said, “That’s the million-dollar question: Do you ride the hot hand, or do you go with the guy who’s your No. 1? It’s one of those things that we put in a lot of thought and consideration into it, and we’ll let the other team guess a little bit. We basically know what we want from it.”
When a reporter suggested it must have been a tough decision, Nolan shrugged and said, “Actually, it’s a good decision. You want tough decisions to make. If it’s easy, the competition isn’t there. So, a hard decision is better for the team. It’s a great position for us to be in deciding which goaltender should go because they’re both very adequate.”
Oddly, Dubielewicz said Nolan told him to “stay ready” to play tonight and said it would be a game-time decision. So, there’s still a measure of doubt in his mind, but the coach seemed clear enough with reporters.
“I want to play,” Dubielewicz said. “I’m looking forward to, hopefully, getting the start. If I do get the call, I’ll be ready. If I don’t then, definitely disappointed.”
DiPietro and the Islanders recently bounced back from a seven-game losing streak with a six-game winning streak before the trade deadline that included a stretch of four wins in which DiPietro gave up a total of five goals. But they lost three of the next four, and DiPietro allowed a total of 15 goals.
The last two of those games were played after DiPietro learned of the death of his grandmother and was excused to be with his family in Boston for her funeral on Monday. Rather than rush DiPietro back into action without practice the next night against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, general manager Garth Snow suggested sticking with Dubielewicz, who played very well in a 1-0 loss to Florida in DiPietro’s absence. When “Dubie” had another strong game in the Isles’ 4-3 shootout win at the Garden, Nolan decided to stick with him.
“The game against Florida, he stood tall for us, and he doesn’t seem to be rattled in there in pressure situations,” Nolan said. “He goes right into Madison Square Garden, and especially with all the shooters against him in the shootout, it didn’t seem to faze him. He just wants to play, and he played great.”
DiPietro had a good idea on Wednesday that he probably would miss a second straight Rangers game, and he’s handled it professionally the past two days. “I was told I wasn’t playing tonight, so, I’ll just get some extra work and be ready to go,” DiPietro said today after the morning skate.
Asked why he’s not playing, DiPietro sounded as if he hadn’t received a detailed explanation of the reasons. “I’m not sure,” DiPietro said in a matter-of-fact tone. “Obviously, at the end of the day, it’s a coach’s decision. Dubie played well last game and got us that win in the shootout.”
Under the circumstances, DiPietro might be wondering how he could lose the starting job because of missing a couple of games related to his grandmother’s funeral. “It was unfortunate I had to be away for a couple days and miss some time, but I came back yesterday and felt good and got some extra work with [goaltending coach Mike Dunham],” DiPietro said. “I had a good practice today, so, I feel good. Whatever I have to do to support the team, it’s a good opportunity to sit back and watch from the bench and just be with the boys.”
Everyone familiar with DiPietro knows how much he hates to sit out any game, but he’s usually at an emotional peak for the Rangers. He commended Dubielewicz for his performance Tuesday night but admitted it will be tough to be a spectator tonight.
“Whenever I don’t play, it’s disappointing,” DiPietro said. “I don’t like to do too much sitting on the bench. But under the circumstances at this time with a death in the family, I had to go back and support my dad and family. It’s tough sitting out any game, but the Rangers games are especially difficult.”
Nolan didn’t spell it out, but he might be reacting to the decline in DiPietro’s save percentage to .886 over his past 16 starts. The Islanders’ defense, which has allowed a league-high 14 short-handed goals this season was a contributing factor, but they gave up a shortie in front of Dubielewicz Tuesday night and he still limited the Rangers to three goals.
Asked if he felt DiPietro might have lost some focus recently, Nolan said, “There’s a lot of things going on in people’s minds, especially with what happened to Ricky’s family. I’m not too sure it was focus, but the puck hasn’t been bouncing quite our way. As far as goals going in is concerned, sometimes it hits shin pads and just goes in. I think it’s not so much focus, it’s more that we haven’t been getting the breaks.”
No matter what happens tonight, it challenges the imagination to think Nolan won’t go back to his franchise goaltender soon. DiPietro will have a second full practice tomorrow in addition to the skate today, and he will have had a full week off by the time the Islanders play Saturday night in Philadelphia. But apparently, no promises have been made.
DiPietro said he’s just trying to stay sharp and hasn’t been told anything about the Flyers game. “I’m not really thinking that far in advance right now,” DiPietro said. “Tonight’s a big one.”

Busey ... Sam ... #1 ... Gary .... Jim from Woodbury ... who ever you are? Are you on this board to audition for the movie Jack A$$???
First off ... half of the guys in our league are under 25 .. secondly I bet the 50 year old guy on our team (electrician during the day) could pound you to a pulp.... and would ... he makes guys half his age look really bad .... we play modified checking ... which most adult leagues do not allow ... and opposing team's players shy away from him because they are afraid of him. His nick name is "Bulldozer" (6'2" 230lbs) ... so I'd love to see you tell him what you posted above to his face. I'm still younger than a lot of NHL players ... so personally I don't take offense to your comment ... I just think it was stupid.
BTW .. he's a huge Ranger fan and thinks that kiddie Ranger fans today are ridiculously stupid .. mostly because of what they say to Devil fans .... he and a few other Ranger fan players I associate with say they are ashamed by what some young Ranger fans say about the Isles and Devils and their stupidity in insulting them ... because he cherishes the ONE cup they have ... it was so hard to come by... and sandwiched around that ONE cup ... was 4 by the Isles ... and 3 by the Devils all in his LONG lifetime ... so what does that say about his Rangers when fellow fans try to belittle both the Isles and Devils?? ... They've enjoyed a lot of success vs. the Rangers ..... he'll still tell you he hates the Isles and the Devils ... but he's a hockey fan first ... and will not insult the sport with stupidity.
.... and Busey .. you are invited to play in our tournament..... or are you just CHICKEN!!!!! As long as you are 21 or over you can play.... or am I asking to much? The Ranger fan team had 7 spots open last I heard ... so if you have the plums better hurry ... they will be snatched up quicker the closer we get ... 1st weekend in April. Courtyard by Marriott right across the street .. so no excuses ... you don't need to drive back and forth.
WOW!!!! So much for the game time decision?!
I don't know whether to think that DP might have a nagging ... yet minor injury .. or if maybe his head just hasn't been there since the All-Star break.... Nolan made some cryptic comments. I don't know what to think. I was hoping DP would come back tonight .... refreshed and ready to go ... I'm not sure sitting DP does his head any good if he's having a problem with focus ... or if Nolan isn't convinced he's game ready.
The time off is not an excuse as far as I'm concerned. He's been back with the team now for 3 days ... and practiced for 2 full days. Give me a break .. the Isles have had 4 days off between games before ..... what is the difference?
Ok....You Nolan bashers....I am with you for TODAY only....
What the H^LL is he thinking ???
The whole season is on the line and you are going to put dubieeee in against the Rangers for a second straight game ? We have the worst offense in the league and we are starting our back up goalie. I realize DP has struggled....Take a peak at how bad Lundquist has been? Yet his coach knows the team will go as far as he takes him.
There must be an injury or a fracture in the locker room....Either way it does not bode well for a team with limited talent at this time.
I am STUNNED
** I like Dubie as a back up...He is not our future though...He will give up at least 4 tonight! At least !!! ***
Steady:
I can't believe I am saying this but have a little more faith in Nolan. Our backup has played pretty well and I think if Dubie starts off in trouble and lets a few bad goals in you will see DP.
One thing that must happen tonight is for the defensive core to keep the same physical and aggressive tenor they had last game. One of the reason's we won was because the defense started skating, pushing guys to the boards, and collecting the huge rebounds Dubie gave up.
I agree on being unhappy with the choice though. The Rangers have had a good look at Dubie now and more importantly, DP is the more talented, more seasoned, and franchise goalie. These types of games are supposed to be his, oh well.
Rangers did an awful lot of weaving thru our players last game, especially in the first 10 minutes. I'm sure they'll be looking to keep the tempo fast tonight. We've got to 'squash' that quickly........and establish our grinding, frustrating style of game. It was nice to see us counter with some speed of our own from the kids....Bergy, Tamby, Comeau. Tamby, however, still looks like a boy among men.........maybe the winning shootout goal will give him addn'l confidence.
Let's go Isles!!!
DP needs to get his head straightened out and focused. I think he should sit and watch. He may be needed tonight if Dubie is pulled......hopefully not!
Hock,
does anyone play for the Isles that has a name not ending in "y"?
"The whole season is on the line and you are going to put dubieeee in against the Rangers for a second straight game ?"
Steady - This is exactly the reason for starting Dubie. What is is record so far when playing games where "the whole season is on the line"? He had a bunch last year and won them ALL. He's had 1 so far this year and continued his perfect record. I think Nolan is doing what any top coach would do in this situation... play the percentages. It might not work out. And Nolan might have to take tremendous heat tomorrow. But it's a well-informed and smart decision based on facts. Dubie is hot. DP is not.
p.s I never have worn skates in my life and cannot tell you the difference between a clothes line and a blue line.
I also cannot spell "can not"
I also am SCARED to play 19Isles in hockey b/c they have no double runner skates at the rental counter. Oh and I am like to dress up like a frog and hump logs.
I think you see a different game all around tonight in my opinion. The Islanders played the better game Tues and deserved the win. The game was too wide open for me from both sides. The Rangers will be a bit more defensively sound tonight and I look for Henrik to play a great game. He normally bounces back pretty well after a game like Tues. The Rangers came out hard and furious the first ten minutes of the game tuesday. It was good to see but, as a Rangers fan when they did not accomplish anything with that start the writing was on the wall for the night. First goal tonight is huge especially if it's a quick one.
snow is on WFAN and he is not happy with Nolan starting Dubie...
Mookie - As an Islanders fan, I am the most scared when the Rangers are flyin' as you say "hard and furious." I'm just saying that when it settles into more of a grinding game, I think the Isles are more comfortable (and so am I).
Cincy...I understand what you are saying. But, let's just say that Dubie is stellar tonight and actually wins tonight...Then what ??? Who plays against Philly???? You cannot destroy that locker room. A pissed off DP, and this franchise is TOAST !! We already are lacking talent. We have soooooooooo many problems....If we add DP to that list, the franchise will be doomed!
A bright man once said...."If you have two starting goalies, you have NO GOALIE !!!" Might have been made in a football referance, but you get the drift!
DP is our future. He is the poster boy of the franchise. Do not mess with that.
The line in Vegas went from Rangers - 125 to Rags -145.......If you Ranger fans do not put a small fortune on tonights game, than you are out of your birds...I would never, as I love my Isles too much, but that is a nice number and with Dubie in the net.....Man!
Mook...I think it is a big game for Lundquist. He must snap his own slump, and win a big media game!!! If he were to get shelled, you would have a problem on your hands to. Just caught the end Nautica....What did he say ?? I saw Mike and the Dog making fun of the fact the Lighthouse Project will never get done.
above was a nervous me !!
Hi guys/gals
Been really busy at work. My only thought for now on Dubie starting, is that he's still the hot goaltendender for the last tw games, may as well stick to wha is working.
Hock - Yea, I get what you are saying and wasn't attacking you.
As a Rangers fan I know that the last two games that were both OTL/SO losses the Rangers played to wide open and not that strong defense. Coupled with Lundqvist looking totally beatable all night long.
Steady - I hear what you are saying I had the same argument about Lundqvist starting the Flyers game. History vs a team or last game played should not factor when deciding to play franchise goalie down the stretch in a playoff run for the Islanders or Rangers. Your big dog fights this time of the year. THATS IT!
LETS GO ISLANDERS
I don't know... I don't think it's just a question of riding the "hot hand"; I think it is (at least in part) getting the rest of the guys to focus on putting forth an optimal effort tonight.
Let's face it, with Dubie in the net, the team won't rely as much on the goaltender to bail them out after defensive breakdowns (notwithstanding DP's recent .886 save percentage) - so it may be an incentive to focus the rest of the team.
Well off to work for a few hours and then back home to catch the game ... then off for my own game ... I'll try to keep up with things from the office ...
--------------------------------------------
Mookie ... nice to see a level headed yet spirited Ranger fan posting on this blog again. Tonight should be a great game ...
--------------------------------------------
The DP situation has me concerned.
1- The only reason to keep DP on the bench is if their are questions about his mental and / or physical readiness. If one or both of those issues are the reason then it is a good move.
2- If one or both of the above are true ... then what next? Does he just have some bumps and bruises that justify the time off. Is it a nagging injury that just needs rest to heal? Is he not focused? I think DP if he's healthy is more than capable of starting tonight and probably is the best medicine he can have.
3- Steady brought up some valid points ... alienating DP now isn't going to fix him if there is a problem. DP's response in the interview seemed kind of sharp and pointed. He can't be happy ... he probably feels he might as well of spent more time with his family.
4- DP spent time with his goalie coach Mike Dunham? I think DP can teach Mike a thing or two.
---------------------------------------------
GO DUBIE!!!!
Another consperacy theory ~~ Perhaps Nolan liked the way the team rallied around Dubie knowing they'll have to work extra hard. The 53 shots against Florida at the least showed that were working hard in the offensive zone.
Who knows?
Well off to the salt mines.
This is a great move, I know that its a controversial one, but we've got very little to lose. This team needs something to be shaken up, and hopefully Dubie can play well and light a fire under DP. Nolan isn't an idiot, DP will be back in against the Flyers and will be rested and motivated again. I say Dubie plays well again tonight and the rest of the year DP plays 80% and Dubie gets the other 20% percent. Keeps Dipietro sharp, motivated, and maybe slightly pissed off. I know it may be a risk, but its about time something changed. Let's give it a chance, if this team makes gets hot and makes the playoffs, then it was obviously it was worth the risk, if not then at least they sent a message that DP will need to perform and that nothing will be handed to him.
THERE IS NO "I" IN TEAM....
(there's an "I" in period....there's 2 "I''s in Dipietro, there's a whole bunch of "I"s in AND ON tonight's and starting goaltender).
But there is no "I' in team.
Al Arbour made a career of "going with the hot goaltender".
Billy Smith rarely, if ever, played more than 40 games during a regular season.
DUBIE IS THE MAN TONIGHT.
A wise man once said....
Dubie is in the "I" of the beholder.
505 will be in the house.
WIN ONE!!!!!
I think 505 needs to be put in the Blog Box so he can still blog during the game. I'm very angry that I'll be working late (this is the fact of life at my new project - by the time I get home from work I've missed at least the first period....funnnnn).
I think this is a gutsy and necessary move by Nolan. If he can't trust Dubie to play when he's hot, Dubie shouldn't be the backup goaltender. It's all about playing the hot hand and SHOWING DP WHO'S BOSS. I think part of his erratic play of late (and maybe even some injuries?) are a result of DP over-playing because Nolan has for far too long let DP have the final call on whether or not he starts. No self-respecting athlete will really say he doesn't want to play in that situation. I love the move, and I see a big one tonight from Dubie. Let's go Islanders!
PS: Anyone else going to Philly for the game on Saturday?
Islander516 -- Interesting point about Arbour. We know Nolan talks to Arbour at least from time to time, maybe often. Maybe Al suggested starting Dubie! You're right that the starting goalie did not used to be as sacrosanct, but in this era of celebrity goalies, and of the inmates running the asylum, it's now seen as a public diss for the coach to bench his starter for a game. What's the big deal? And frankly, it might help Ricky get his focus back if his ego is bruised a little.
I challenge the Oracle's 4-goals-against prediction. We're winning 3-2 in regulation.
dont be shocked that even after all was said today and DP goes out and starts tonight...i know it may sound crazy but just a feeling a got...no way in hell DP sits out 2nite...NO WAY
btw i know nolan said that dubie is in 2nite but just wait for the game to start and just remember, you heard it here first!!
I hate to mention this right now, but is anybody else really scared that Forbes doesn't have Charles Wang listed on the list of billionaires anymore?
Thanks for the thought Nick, but I would decline the offer.
I can do better work out among the people ----keeping the Ranger fans "on their toes".
And it is comforting to know I won't get threatened with ejection (a la Colorado) if I say "mean things" about the Rangers.
I said it yesterday, but I expected the predictable from Nolan. I am pleased he is playing Dubbie tonight. At this point of the season he has to pull the goalie if they get two or more goals behind. They need every win and they need two hot goalies to do it.
If he plays DP right now it is more risky.
- DP plays well, great we may or may not get a win.
- DP gets pounded, what then, disgracefully pull him and put Dubbie back in. And the entire team confidense takes a hit.
If he plays Dubbie, there is only an upside.
- Dubbie stays hot, they win. Team continues to feel they have two hot goalies.
- Dubbie gets pounded, bring in DP. Team still gained confidense playing in front of Dubbie, but DP is back. Still positive.
- Plus DP sitting on the bench is a good thing. He needs to be highly motivated and hungry in the home stretch.
Win or Lose I expect DP back against the Flyers.
Kevin T.
I agree with 222, betcha DP starts...
And man, I like discussions about the games at hand much better than the doom and gloom lately about the franchise, its organizational depth, and its long-term viability. I know that is a much bigger issue for those of you that live on LI, and pay wads of cash for season tickets, 20-game packages, or even multiple single game tickets. But trust me, I am in the same boat from 2000 miles away, and that is why I am willing to try and lend a hand to Nick and KH with their community group.
I don't know if this was just a product of the trade deadline, but some of you guys were starting to get really depressing, and I didn't enjoy getting on this site or even watching the last few games. I decided a break was in order, but I keep coming back here like 505 to a handle (or bag) of the "good stuff."
I am all about living in the moment, and all the other stuff will sort itself out, or if the world ends tomorrow, it will be moot. So, keep it light gang, there is plenty to worry about in the offseason (if we make it there). Oh, and LET'S GO ISLANDERS!
I think this is a good decision. Especially given the fact that OUR assessments are based on LIMITED information. The things we do know:
DP was not sharp BEFORE his layoff.
Dubie played well in both starts. If not for a stone wall on the other side he is 2-0.
Dubie can play at the NHL level.
What we can speculate on:
DP has some sort of "lower body injury". He really hasn't been the same since the AS game.
the Isles could suffer the Ranger hangover while STILL engaged in a Ranger game... and Dubie would be doomed...but so would DP. If DP gets shelled by the rangers it could affect him for rest of the year. If Dubie gets shelled it could affect him the rest of the year, but he'll be at the end of the bench encouraging his teammates just the same.
While we're on the subject of "moves"... am I the only persona that would like to see Fata on the back line. That would give them Marty, Berard, Meyer as puck carrier, and Witt, Davison and Fata as crease police. Just a thought.
PP: I would really like to see them play like there was no penalty called. When they are on the PP they just forget to do the little things.
this is rediculous - the franchise goalie - the all star - the guy who everything is built around on this team - the guy who everyone that works for the team is hoping to raise his number to the rafters - ready, willing and able to play the biggest game of the year - against the rags - and we start dubie????????? I love Ted Nolan as much as the next guy but this is rediculous - typical Islanders
Anyone who says this is typical Islanders is completely ignorant of everything related to winning or coaching a hockey game.
I could care less if DiPietro is the franchise goaltender or not, Dubielewicz is the hot hand right now and you need to go with that. DP has played entirely too much this season, try as he might he is not Brodeur and doesn't have that type of team in front of him.
Yes, we are in the stretch run and he is a centerpiece - but this team IS NOT A TEAM BUILT FOR HIM, YET.
Plain and simple, you need to get DP back to being focused and really fired up to play and win games. His GAA has suffered, he's given up weak goals every game and he needed a rest both mentally and physically.
DiPietro's ego is big enough, he deserves a dose of reality every now and then to keep him humble and appreciative of what he has and is.
Enough blaming Nolan for doing what he is supposed to - coach his players and get the absolute best out of them. I am so sick and tired of all the negative comments - be real fans and stick by the team no matter what already.
http://www.islesblogger.com
There is no question DP just hasn't been the same since the AS game. I was Tivo'ing it and rewound like 5 times to hear him say things like, "Timmy (Tim Thomas) go take it, I just totally blew out my hip again" and "I'm done, I f'd my hip up."
Since then I have just noticed in increase in soft goals and more importantly a lack of that fire he used to have. The kind that saw him smashing Avery in the crease, or racing to the bench like a madman during a delayed penalty. It just hasn't been there.
I'm a die hard fan, but I was at the Game on Tues and I say for now you go with Dubie. Anyone here who's saying "why aren't we starting our franchise goalie" simply hasn't watched or attended almost all games like I have.
Actually i've been to every home game this team has played in 8 seasons - i understand Dubie has impressed and that Ricky has not been the same - but would Brodeur or Luongo or a top quarterback (Manning, Brady) - a franchise player miss this kind of game? If they lose tonight it might not be Dubies fault but that will be the whole theme of the loss - the season is on the line and you have to play your best players - especially in net - Its not an ignorant statement but hot hand or not DP is the better option - you have to go with your top guy in this situation.
I agree with that - but a butterfly goalie with a bum hip is like Brady with a sprained shoulder. If Brady hurts his foot he can still stay in the pocket and PASS, but you cant tell me that Ricky has been able to move laterally as well as he should be lately. Did you see how fast Dubie was coming across the crease Tues night?
Look man im not here for fights or arguements - you or the Real Godard can play goal as long as we beat the Rags tonight - im leaving for the coliseum in 10 minutes - i was just worried that this decision could come back to haunt us - hope it works out great though
You all know my stance that DP should play....I will not rehash my reasons as I have made them very clear.
My only question is this:
Why do you all say Dubie is so hot ??? He gave up three goals against the rangers. Two of which were easy! Not to mention around 3 crossbars dinged! He was on the wrong end of a 1-0 loss to the Panthers in which THE WHOLE GAME was played in FLA's end........It is not like he stood on his head!
I understand and RESPECT all of your thoughts.....I just cannot see how the franchise who ALWAYS plays well against the Rags is not in there....I am SHOCKED !!
I hope you are all right and I am wrong. Because if I am right and DP starts getting sour on this franchise......Our one shinning light will brun out!
Let's get TWO TONIGHT boys.....TAKE TWO !!!!!!!!!!!!
p.s 505....Do not let the NVMC become like the Philly game.....Heads high boys...Hands a clapping....Mouths a yelling !!!
Steady...welcome to the dark side...
There's a difference between riding the hot hand and knowing when the hot hand is almost out of heat...
From a Ranger Fan:
The moron Sam Rosen is ruining our blog also. He is obviously a Devil fan or simply a disturbed person.
Good luck to night. Well not really ;)
Candy....You mean you have "Found The Light !" :) :)
Hopefully this is the last time we agree or this board will get boring :)
I am not looking for a fight either, I just provide my view as a season ticket holder.
Dubie may not be "hot" in the normal sense, but his 3 goal letup on Tuesday could've been a five goal letup if DiPietro was in net in his current "condition".
Hot doesn't always mean fire, it takes a certain degree of luck (crossbar, post) in addition to positioning and team defense to make a goaltender the guy you ride during these stretches.
DP has excelled against the Rangers - I agree. I have a funny feeling the organization doesn't want a repeat of what happened last year - DP going down with a stupid injury and almost ruining a chance at the playoffs. I think they are playing the safe bet here more than anything - they know they will get 100% out of Dubielewicz tonight when DiPietro has periods of being off since the all star break.
I like what I have seen out of Dubie - let's just hope it continues and then DP can come in and take over and get the Isles on a stretch like they were on 2 weeks ago heading into the final games.
About to head to the barn myself - catch you guys later.
http://www.islesblogger.com
maybe the decision is more about the coach keeping a fire going under the rest of the team than about the goalies themselves. sometimes players get fired up with moves like this, play with more urgency.
Steady,
I agree on your temperature assessment. I'll stick to my opinion though, because HOT never entered my mind. My thoughts are based on DP's performance over the past 15 or so games. They varied from good to weak. He has not been sharp.
He may also be showing signs of that in practice... we don't get to see that. So I am going to trust Nolan's decision, and not second guess it.
I don't think anybody would rather have DP in there more than Nolan. I'm pretty sure that Nolan would have liked another option when Dubie was forced in the first time. But Dubes deserves this. Another good stretch could get him some offers over the summer... He's been a stand up (although he still looks like he's kneeling) Isle throughout.
They're gonna get another two tonight... and I have a feeling Dubes is going to be a factor.
You say Brady and Manning and I say FLUTIE!!!!
Good Luck Dubes!
maybe the decision is more about the coach keeping a fire going under the rest of the team than about the goalies themselves. sometimes players get fired up with moves like this, play with more urgency.
Doug Flutiewicz?
Islesfan222 - This Rangers fan here called it first on this blog or the last. I think its a pre-game gag by Nolan. DP starts tonight!
Godard - I caught that clear as day during the All Star Game. The evil 'Rags' fan in me did a dance first. Then I thought how much that sucks for the Isles. DP is the Isles, this team sinks or swims on the Shoulders of DP.
Steady - I am riding with you on this one. Whether bothered by his grandmother (I feel it and condolences), not healthy physically or mentally and etc. He is there and I think he needs to play this game.
Let's get TWO TONIGHT boys.....TAKE TWO !!!!!!!!!!!!
Lets Go Rangers!!! LOL
I will swing by tomorrow, not here to crash today or hide.
Guys,
Come On...........
DP is coming off a devastating death in his family. That takes a bit of time to recover from. Dubby has played well and most likely will tonight.
Maybe DP has not played well with the knowledge that his Grandmother was dying.
Give DP and Nolan a break, you read way too much into stuff.
I've pretty much ignored any talk of this so far, but it's getting so I can't ignore the smell of smoke coming from the Snow-Nolan relationship.
Things just aren't quite adding up. Or perhaps they're adding up in a way I'd hoped I would never see.
First... Trade deadline deals include trading away Nolan's First Nation brethren, and dealing the only real blueline PP threat. I'm sure we can all agree that the idea for both deals didn't originate with Nolan.
Second... Snow, NOT Nolan, is the one to announce that DP will miss the first Ranger game. How many other times have you ever seen a GM make the starting goalie announcement for a game? Ad to that that, despite Snow's words, Nolan didn't seem to commit to Dubie until just before gametime.
Third... It happens AGAIN!!! But this time the players are reversed. Snow again makes the claim that he's sure DP will be in the net on Thursday, but Nolan first contradicts him by holding out hope for Dubie, then announces that Dubie is the starter. Although I didn't hear it directly, word has it that Snow sounded not all that happy about the starting goalie announcement when interviewed by MM on WFAN.
Now, here's the ominous part... Nolan's dark history with the only other NHL GM he's ever worked under. Is this a glimpse of one of the skeletons in Nolan's closet? Are we seeing the first sign's of Nolan's darker, rebellious side?
Stay tuned, because I think we're seeing only the beginning of this story. Perhaps the outcome of tonight's game will determine whether or not this story continues to play out. Or maybe the game won't even matter.
** Can someone help me out ...
I know Wang was on the FAN talking about the Lighthouse project ...does anyone have a link so I can listen to it? Or, can someone give me a factual account of what he said?
Thanks ...of to the game....
AZS here is the link so that u can listen to it. it not only has wang but also DP, snow, guerin, dubie, and nolan
god damn edit post icon that isn't there...sorry forgot the link here it is....

Nautica heard it AZS !!! I caught the end.
Cincy...Simply an AWESOME post. If the Isles get lit up tonight and Dubie plays poor, does Snow fire a shot at Nolan to the press ????
THE BOBBLEHEADS !!!!
Just an FYI if anyone is out there still at this point, but I would hardly say Snow did not sound happy. He said the move to start Dubie definitely raised some eyebrows when Nolan told the rest of the Bobbleheads, but he made it seem like he understood. Listen for yourselves.
Regardless, though, I do agree with Cincy, and I think we started seeing rifts with the Simon trade that was supposedly made to give JT a chance at the lineup. Garth is all for a youth movement from what he spews during this and other interviews, and I am not so sure Nolan is on board.
Could be some interesting drama...when is Nolan's contract up? Would Garth be able to convince Wang that Nolan should go if they really don't see eye to eye?
Wang is a moron and listened to MM for years, so YES he will listen to the clueless Snow.
Anyone still want to argue about # 3..... At least twice this period he was out of position, especially on Avon Averys goal. (How he missed the first one is simply comical. ) All those who still like # 3, please tell him he can try and fight anytime now!!!!
As for the Dubie experiment.....The team looks pathetic in front of him, so much for getting the team fired up. The score should be 4-0.......PUT THE FRANCHISE IN NET !!!!!!!! The team is not responding to Dubie tonight, and he looks like a flounder out there.
Also might be time to look at our Captain....How many years did the Bobbleheads give him ??????? Like I said in previous posts....The Bobbles gave three years to old guys and one year to younger guys.....THEY ARE LOST !!!
****Done venting....Can we please get shots on net in the next period...??? Other than that one shift the offense was non existant.
How good is BERGENHEIM ??? We all have noticed his strong play of late.....
He gives avon avery a full face rake, than patiently takes the puck and scores. His pass was awesome toward the end as well.
# 3 trips and takes a penalty at the end of the period....Again....any time now you can drop the gloves.
Nice team defense....I think the rags had two shots that period.
p.s Why am I talking to myself ????? :) :) :)
5-1 Steady, it should be.
The Avery miss. The Drury miss. The Jagr ringer.
Isles scoring goals is like watching a damn pinball machine.
I have heard mixed reviews. Is #3 (I'm guessing you don't say his name for a reason) a tough guy? Does he fight? Should he?
First Period 50/50
Second Period 100% Isles. (Domination)
Third Period = Anyones Game = The team that wants it most gets the W.
b/c you're steady!!
that's why:)
keep up the good commentary all!
remember me, i usually just read and listen and observe,
lets have a KICKASS 3rd and get two,
the flyers are tied,
we need two,
get two,
two,
get it,
two,
peace:)
Steady
No you're not alone, just some great venting lol.
No Ice Girls near Lundqvist in the third period...lol
Ugly goal. They didn't come out very strong in the third. Come on Isles.
Not to get off topic here, but another game where the Isles have a considerable amount of time on a 5 on 3 and look pathetic. The PP is brutal.
Any so why does Gallant still have a job? Who is running this team?
Dubie completely overcomitted on the 3rd goal. DP must be lhfao.
any chance of a fight in this game? Its the only thing worth watching. Man, the isles are a softy team.
Just a digusting lack of effort by the Isles in this period. Where is the desperation? Frustrating.
Anyone who wants to jump on me for constantly criticizing Nolan is welcome to. But before you do please tell me why the forwards who have the best +/- on the team (Comeau and Bergenheim) saw the least amount ice time through two periods? Why is Comeau buried on the 4th line? Why is Hilbert on the first? Why does Nolan resemble the scarecrow?
I miss Cairns.
I completely agree with you Candyman. I don't know why Nolan refuses to play the kids more. Give them some freaking time on the PP.
They are not scoring two goals in five minutes either.
Jaffe just said it, he wouldn't mind seeing the Kid line.
Great effort Isles. Awesome. This team is so freaking frustrating. To play like this at home is just unacceptable.
This game wasn't on the goalie, this game was on the lack of talent and skill on this team.
Just back from the game ...and I have some thoughts/observations ...
Some of these have already been braught up so I apologize, but I have to get them out there anyways ...
1) Bergy has been amazing over the past few weeks. Why is he not seeing PP time? I mean I know giving up shorties and looking clueless is our PP mantra ...but maybe they could give him a try ...whatever happened to Nolan's giving time to those that produce?
2) Why is it that Comeau saw 8:09 of ice time and Tamby and Colliton saw 7:29? I mean that line has been skating, hitting, controlling ...I can also see what Nolan wouldn't want them out there ...I love how Nolan just throws out vets - just because they're vets - and leaves kids on the bench just because they're kids ...
**I'm putting out an APB on our Captain** Has anyone seen Bill Guerin? The quietest 20g season ever ...if he were Yashin he's be getting killed ...I guess he's getting a pass but he's been invisible ...
Cincy--Excellent post, you are right on. I could see this thing exploding and Nolan leaving. Wang sticking with Snow and hiring a yes man.
Candyman you are so right, I was watching the passing drills (also known as the power play), and I was thinking to myself, "can Nolan fire Gallant now, or does he have to wait until the end of the season? This guy Steady would be great for the job. Actually, no offense Steady, but the coach from the NHL commercials would do the trick..."
Oh, well, I'll crack open another beer and look forward to the next game, where hopefully they'll give Bergie and the kids a little more time on the ice.
Speaking of the kids, is this a line worth keeping together, or do you think injecting a little youth and/or speed into the other lines (jovas, hunter & fedotenko excluded) might be more productive? Just a thought...
One last thought. Do we have numbered lines? Is our first line really guerin, comrie, and hilbert? As a guy called Jubal Early once said, "Does that seem right to you?"
And it's amazing
