Just as the Islanders did a few days ago, it’s time for me to clean out my locker, pack up my laptop and head into the offseason. I’m going to leave you with a few odds and ends left over from interviews at the end of the season, and I’m going to include a section with answers to some FAQs that are bound to come up in the next couple of months so that you have a handy reference. This is my longest blog ever by far, so, you can read it in sections over several days if you like because it’s the last one for quite some time.
But first, I want to thank all of the people who have read this blog and contributed to it over the course of my first season on the Islanders beat. Right from the start of the season in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to the very end in Buffalo, the Islanders provided all of us with a great story to follow. I’m approaching my 25th anniversary at Newsday this summer and have covered a lot of territory in that time, but I really can’t remember a more enjoyable experience on a beat.
As a first-time blogger, I approached this opportunity a little differently because I saw the space available on the Internet as a way to expand coverage of the Islanders, which is what I promised to do in my second blog. It was a lot of work, and I might have to re-think my approach next season now that this blog is established. But taken as a whole, the blog provided extra full-length articles by the dozens. I like to think that set a tone for the in-depth discussion that grew all season in the comment section.
I can’t tell you how many times I read over the comments and felt proud that so many people with hockey knowledge and interest put so much effort into expressing their opinions and driving the discussion forward. I don’t want to slight anyone by overlooking your name, but the steady posters from Vancouver to Edmonton to Cincinnati to upstate New York to Massachusetts to Toronto to New York City to Slovakia to Merrick Road and on and on even to Rangers precincts across the USA and to other places known only by their initials must be commended for making this spot come alive. I can do my very best, but without your input and effort, this blog never could have achieved the level of readership that it did. And while I am off, you are invited to continue posting comments and discussing the Islanders.
Since the week of the Feb. 27 trade deadline when it set a Newsday record for sports blogs with 56,782 hits, this has been the No. 1 sports blog at Newsday for six of the past eight weeks with numbers ranging from just over 20,000 to more than 33,000 hits. Readership of Islanders stories on our web site also has jumped accordingly, topping 120,000 hits for five of the past eight weeks up to a high of 230,543 the week the Islanders’ first-round series with Buffalo opened. That’s the highest number of hits for a week of Islanders coverage in five years since the first-round playoff series with Toronto, when the numbers included the Rangers and all hockey stories. The interest was reflected by increased space in Newsday, including quite a few back page headlines.
Congratulations to all of you and thank you very much. Despite the empty seats at the start of the season in Nassau Coliseum, it shows the depth of interest and passion for the Islanders still is there. It’s up to GM Garth Snow, coach Ted Nolan and owner Charles Wang to keep building on it. Clearly, the fan base is ready to embrace a quality product. Okay, on to hockey topics.
RYAN SMYTH: You might have seen these comments previously on the Islanders’ web site, but I found it interesting when Smyth spoke about his contact with former greats Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier before leaving. In particular, Smyth recalled a passage from Wayne Gretzky’s book about the scene in the locker room area at Nassau Coliseum after the Isles swept Edmonton, 4-0, to win their last Stanley Cup in 1983.
“It’s pretty special, actually,” Smyth said. “I came from the west side, knowing all those Oilers, and now, getting to meet the other side. I still remember when Gretz wrote in his book the fact that, when he walked down this hall, they were on ice bags. They weren’t even celebrating when they beat [the Oilers]. They knew how hard it was to win and what it took to win. That’s the reflection you get when you see the other side of it and how they deal with everyday life. It’s a great opportunity to get to know them all.”
That history might be meaningless to many hockey free agents, but I think Smyth honestly appreciated it. Whether it’s enough to convince him to return, I don’t know. But Marc-Andre Bergeron, another former Oiler and a friend of Smyth’s seemed to like his experience on Long Island and to think Smyth did, too.
“It’s been great,” Bergeron said of his own time with the Isles. “Right from the get-go when I was traded here, I talked with Garth, and he made me feel really confident about coming down here. He made sure I was comfortable. The players and the staff made it easy to adjust. That’s the biggest part. They showed me confidence on the ice, and I took advantage…I’m closer to home [in Quebec]. I’ve got friends coming down here. I’m in New York, so, there’s nothing wrong with that.”
Of course, Smyth’s heart is far away in Edmonton, where he grew up as a kid in Alberta rooting for the Oilers. But when I asked Bergeron how he thought Smyth liked the Island, he said: “I think he likes it. I know he likes it. So, it’s a matter of having a deal that will make him happy.”
JASON BLAKE: It would be surprising to me if Blake signs before July 1 when the free agent market opens. It’s in his best interest to see if there’s a team that will blow him away with a big-money offer. He is coming off a career season of 40 goals despite playing with a wide variety of linemates that went from Alexei Yashin to Viktor Kozlov to Randy Robitaille. He proved in the second half of the season that he wasn’t just a beneficiary of Yashin’s hot start. If anything, it might have been the other way around.
As much as the Islanders need Blake’s speed, he actually might fit in better elsewhere with a team that places more of a priority on speed. “Is there a better fit out there?” Blake asked. “I don’t know that. For me, I’ve been here for six years; I’ve made a home here, I’m comfortable here, I know everyone in the organization, I know Charles and Mike Milbury and now Garth’s the GM. We’ve done a lot to make it successful. Is there a better fit? I’ll never know that unless I do go somewhere else. I’ll be 34 at the start of next year, and I want to win. It’s not necessarily about money. It’s being happy, and I want to win. Hopefully, that’s here.”
Interestingly, Blake said he and Rick DiPietro both tried to sell Smyth on the advantages of Long Island.
RICK DIPIETRO: The goaltender began this season with the pressure of a 15-year contract, but after the team lost him twice with concussions, his value was underscored to the extent that the contract began to look like a bargain. Nolan talked often about how you could see DiPietro mature over the course of the season. I’d be willing to bet that, after his experience with concussions this season, he might recognize the need to rein himself in just to the point where he eliminates the unnecessary risk-taking. His puck-handling still will be a vital part of his game, but as the Islanders improve, DiPietro will grow more secure with his importance to everything they do and just concentrate on providing the edge the Isles need to get past the Rangers and Devils.
As the face of the franchise, DiPietro knows better than anyone how much progress the Islanders have made this season, and he will want to keep pushing that forward. “It was a tough summer as far as p.r. went for the Islanders, but I think we made all the right decisions and right moves, and it paid off,” DiPietro said. “We always think there’s things we could have done better, but for the most part, we had a productive season and we got a lot of people back.
“People saw how hard we fought and the resiliency this team had. That’s the New York attitude: always keep fighting. And that’s what we did. People respect that. It’s nice to see people when you’re on the streets or out to lunch and they come up and say they’re proud of you and the season you had. That’s a great feeling.”
ALEXEI YASHIN: The promise of Yashin’s fast start under Nolan faded when he struggled while trying to come back from a knee injury in late November. There’s no question he was playing hurt when he returned in mid-December, but his production and effort fell so far in January that Nolan felt compelled to shut him down completely in February to eliminate the injury factor as an excuse for poor play. Thereafter, Nolan’s frustration was obvious in terms of his wavering support for Yashin.
“Sometimes, it’s tough with the confidence,” Yashin said. “You start questioning yourself or you start to play tighter. Sometimes, when you shoot the puck, instead of hitting the post and it goes in, it hits the post and goes out. Breaks like that are what make it difficult on any player. From my perspective, I play hockey with whatever ice time I have I try to give my best to this team.”
Yashin said blame comes with the territory as the captain and highest-paid player on the team, and he correctly noted that he never made an issue of the situation to create a distraction for the team. “It’s not about me,” Yashin said. “I never said, ‘Me, me, me, I want this stuff or I want more power play time.’ I know what I can do with support. Players become better players with a lot of support. It’s no question when I got a lot of support, a lot of things went right for me. But I have no regrets about this season at all. I hope my future will be much brighter.”
Yashin’s agent, Marc Gandler, recently said his client would give up the “C” to Ryan Smyth or any other player if that’s what it takes to remain an Islander and avoid a buyout. Whether the Islanders sign Smyth and Blake or not, they can’t ignore the fact Yashin scored 50 points in 58 games. He seemed comfortable at left wing, and if he’s relieved of the leadership responsibility, maybe it would reduce the pressure of expectations. On the other hand, Nolan’s expectations are high for everyone in the locker room.
TED NOLAN & GARTH SNOW: As Snow said, the coach and GM really did become an effective team during the season. They revived the franchise, but the Islanders are at a tipping point after paying such a high price for Smyth at the trade deadline and with 13 unrestricted free agents to worry about signing or letting go. Personally, I will be fascinated to see whether the progress they made translates into attracting enough quality free agents in the offseason to take the next step to contending status. If they lose Smyth, will they go hard after Chris Drury? Can’t wait to find out.
ISLANDERS NOTES: Defenseman Tom Poti is one of the key free agents the Islanders need to retain. He likes to go year-to-year on contracts, but he stated his desire to return. “I have a lot of respect for the coaching staff and for Garth,” Poti said. “We had a great year. I like it here a lot, and I hope to definitely be back. It’s a great group of guys in the room. I don’t know how you could get a better group of guys. With the guys that are signed for years to come, it’s a great nucleus, and with a couple more pieces to the puzzle, we could do some serious damage.”
Backup goaltender WadeDubielewicz, whose mental toughness and skill in net got the Islanders through the last four games of the regular season and into the playoffs, also is unrestricted but would like to return as DiPietro’s regular backup. “I’ve been with the organization since Day 1,” Dubielewicz said. “I’m an Islander, and I want to stay in the organization. I’ve got to be realistic. I’m not going to step into a No. 1 job anywhere. So, being behind a goalie like Ricky with his talent level and his skill level, you can’t ask for a better situation…In the past couple of weeks, they really have shown their appreciation. Teddy said thanks and told me I did a great job and I opened some eyes and proved to some people I can play. It feels pretty good.”
Several calls to defenseman Sean Hill’s agent have gone unanswered in the week since the season ended. Hill’s suspension for the use of performance-enhancing substances was a real shocker. No one is more opposed to the use of such substances than I am, but it would be a shame for Hill’s career to end this way. As much as I admired his toughness on the ice, a quality that defined his entire career, I believe his presence in the locker room was at least as valuable. Hill’s was a voice of reason and honesty, which is why his silence is so troubling now.
Islanders TV analyst Billy Jaffe asked me toward the end of the season to convey his thanks to the fans after his first year with the team. Since I covered 90 of 92 games this season, including exhibitions and playoffs, I only got to hear him twice. But I liked what I heard, and more importantly, I can tell you I’ve never seen a commentator spend more time working the locker room and quietly developing relationships with players and discussing the fine points of the games than I saw Jaffe do on a daily basis. His opinion was a valuable resource for me, and I’m sure those who watch the telecasts will be well-served in the future by Jaffe.
If you recall the blog I did toward the end of the season about six-year-old Cole Botta, the son of Islanders vice-president of communications, Chris Botta, you will be happy to know that Cole has made wonderful progress since undergoing open-heart surgery. Chris said it was hard to slow Cole down on a recent visit to the park. Thanks to Chris and his assistant, Corey Witt, for their invaluable help this season and, most of all, for facilitating coverage rather than obstructing it, as too many teams in pro sports do these days. Thanks also to Deb Kauffman and Howie Rose on the TV side and to radio announcers Steve Mears and Chris King for welcoming me into their midst and sharing their knowledge.
FAQs: Q: What are the chances of 2006 No. 1 pick Kyle Okposo leaving the University of Minnesota after his freshman year to join the Isles?
A: “That decision could come by the summer,” Snow said. “It’s not a rush. We’re not putting any pressure on from the organizational side of things. It’s something Kyle and his family have to talk about. It’s a big change in lifestyle.”
Q: How much talent is left in the farm system after sending Robert Nilsson, Ryan O’Marra and this year’s No. 1 pick to Edmonton for Ryan Smyth and trading this year’s No. 2 pick to Washington for Richard Zednik?
A: In addition to Okposo, Snow mentioned several young players who played with the Isles and Bridgeport, including forwards Jeff Tambellini, Frans Nielsen and Blake Comeau and defensemen Chris Campoli and Bruno Gervais, who were a pair in the playoffs. He said the signing of University of New Hampshire star Trevor Smith, whom he likened to Trent Hunter but with better skating ability, was meant to offset the loss of Nilsson and O’Marra. Smith probably is a couple years away. Snow also mentioned that defenseman Dustin Kohn will be moving up from juniors, and he hopes to sign Sean Bergenheim, who spent last season playing in Sweden.
Q: When will defenseman Radek Martinek return from his fractured leg?
A: He is expected to be ready to go when training camp opens. Snow said Martinek will remain on Long Island during the offseason to undergo rehabilitation.
Q: How is Bergenheim’s knee injury that he suffered at the end of the season?
A: According to agent Marc Gandler, Bergenheim is perfectly healthy and will play with Finland in the world championships. As for signing with the Isles next season, Gandler said discussions haven’t begun, “but both sides are interested in getting a deal done.”
Q: Can Alexei Yashin restructure the remaining four years of his contract worth $26.45 million?
A: Restructuring a contract is NOT allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.
Q: What is the procedure for a buyout?
A: If the Islanders want to buy out a contract, they must do it by June 30 or wait another year. The player then receives an amount equal to two-thirds of his contract spread equally over twice the remaining years. In Yashin’s case, he would receive a total of $17.63 million in annual installments of just over $2.2 million paid in monthly checks for a total of eight years.
Q: How long do we have to wait for another blog from that lazy so-and-so Logan?
A: That depends on when news events warrant it and whether the need to use up accumulated vacation and comp time from this and previous years permits it. Without going into details, this could be the last blog for many months. Then again, I’m hopeful we can work it out so I can cover Islanders news throughout what should be an eventful summer. Have a great offseason.

Marc-Andre Bergeron's comment about Smytty liking the Island and it's just a matter of the right contract will have me flying high for a while!! It's looking good!
Nicely done all year Greg. Way to cover and break news. Not being a big market (or in a big enough sport for the radio sport shows) the Islanders get almost no coverage anywhere else but Newsday. I was worried after Hahn left, but I thought you did a great job. I for one look forward to seeing your article next year, but would really like some articles over the summer concerning F/A, the kids in the system and yes, even the draft, even though we have almost nothing going on there.
Thanks again.
I'll stay optimistic after hearing that quote too
By the way, I'll personally host the street party if/when Smyth re-signs with the Islanders, as I'm moving back to the Island in a month or so
Yo Logan.... thanks for everything bro. I've all but abandoned the Isles website for this blog. I found out about this site from a story at the teams site. I was hooked and now I am here all the time. Thanks for the great blogs and breaking news. What I really appreciate is how you read our blogs and address certain issues that pop up. Thank you for taking your job seriously.
I'll be here during all the offseason because I hate basketball, football and baseball... this is all I have. LETS GO ISLANDERS
Best blog about hockey I've ever seen. Thanks Greg and have a great summer. It was a plesure getting to know you guys.
From Calgary to Long Island
Nick,
When you're having your street party - make sure you keep the partyers under control. We had a playoff-long street party here in Edmonton and of course some idiots (who can't be actual hockey fans) got out of control and decided it would be funny to set garbage cans on fire and then assault the police that were trying to keep everything under control. There ended up being a public address on TV where everyone from the mayor to the police, to hockey players were pleading for people to act "responsibly" is I think how they put it. I'm sure you'll never guess who was the Oiler who was part of that plea. I'm sure Ryan wouldn't be happy to have to do that again in LI. (We all have our idiot "fans" - they aren't only beer-bottle-throwing jokers at the Coliseum).
As an Islander fan living in the hockey "hotbed" of southeast Georgia, I thank you!
Great work all season, it was a great ride and I cannot wait for next season!
Sign Smyth AND Blake!!!!
Thanks Greg, awesome blog...feels lonely up here in ottawa being an isles fan, but always enjoyed your blog and the thoughts of other isles fans.
Great job with the blog, Greg! I've enjoyed it immensely.
I really hope the Isles buy out Yashin and get Smyth signed. If they can then resign Blake and add Drury, wow, look out.
Should be an exciting off season, especially after the Rangers get ousted.
That wasn't so long! I read it in one sitting. Thanks for improving over time, and getting to know us so well. The blog is a great addition to the print coverage that has so many space restrictions on it. Have a wonderful off season, Greg. But for us NYI365ers, there IS no OFF season. Take care.
Greg,
Thanks for the extra efforts. I came to this blog late but really enjoyed the comments from the knowledgeable fans. It is great to see so many Isles fans spread out all over. I am cautiously optimistic about the offseason. Sabres 3-2. Cool.
Make me your captain if Yashin rescinds. I exemplified leadership and hardwork better than anyone else on the team this year. Just check my playoff stats.
-RR
I can't thank you enough for this blog Greg! Great job all year long - now its time to take some well deserved R&R!
Any good-thoughts from Isles fans would be apprecated. My Canucks have me believing more tonight. I'm seeing some Grit, with a capital G, from some players I didn't think had it in them!
After all, who wants the word Duck carved into the Stanely Cup? There's something terribly wrong with that!
Kevin T.
Add my thanks. Only 23 weeks to Opening Night!
Kevin T. - Just turned on the game, and though I have some work I must do, I will be rooting for the Canucks with my available brain cells. Rooting for any Canadian team against a team that represents Orange County is an easy call.
So glad to see the Rags putting up a better effort against the Sabres than we did. Hehehehehe....
TED NOLAN will be doing post-game commentary on Versus after the Canucks-Ducks game, for those interested. It is now 12:24 am Eastern time, and the game is tied 1-1 with 9:20 to go in the 3d period.
Just read Greg's Year-End post. I would to echo what others have said. I have never posted on any other hockey site. This one drew me in, because there seemed to be that extra connection to the team. Via Greg.
islesfan, I think the Isles are trying to re-estabish themselves. I don't expect that kind of reaction.
KH, thanks for sending some good carma the Canucks way. The Ducks are our Buffalo, just with more of a mean streak.
And are you serious about Nolan making comments on this game? If so, how do I tap in?
Kevin T.
CORRECTION: I meant oilerfan, not islesfan.
Canucks and Ducks going to Overtime...
Greg: Nice work all year. The Islanders brought credibility back to their organization with solid management, coaching, and effort on-ice, but you contributed to that restoration with solid reporting. I've been impressed with the sensitivity with which you've covered a number of issues--Simon, Hill, Yashin and Blake's contract power struggles, the pursuit of Smyth--and I look forward to reading more.
I find it interesting that Bergenheim and Yashin share an agent. I know that potential conflicts like these exist all the time in the pro sports world, but in this case it's particularly troubling. Bergenheim is the only real "right now" prospect (with Nielsen and Comeau being "very soon" prospects). I'd be fascinated to know, if you ever get the chance to sniff around, whether their representation has complicated the issues for Isles management.
Kevin T - Nolan is on right now. Don't know how you could see him if you don't get Versus in Canada. He predicted the Rags would play Buffalo tougher at MSG, and said to look for Jagr and Avery to shine. To which Bill Clement responded by saying, in so many words, that Avery can only do something if he can catch up with the Sabres. Hehehe...
Ryan - Great point about the conflict of interest, where the agent could withhold Bergenheim if the Isles don't do what he wants with Yashin. Scott Boras and Drew Rosenhaus have both been known to do that. Greg, I concur, that it worth looking into...
Hey Fellas
I have to give it up to the Isle this season. When things looked as dark as they get, the Isles took the bull by the horns and stepped it up.
One thing that really gets makes no sence to me is the attendence record for the Isles. Come on you guys the ticket prices are reasonable and the trafic isn't all that bad. (I attend ever Rangers - Isles game at the Coliseum). I think I love our rivalry more then the playoffs (well is the only thing I had for 8 years).
As a true Rangers fan I would hate to see the Isles go. Abusing Isles fans is what we love most (especialy since 1994). Take a look at this blog, I love reading all the comment as most of you do. Isles fan continue supporting you team and spread the word HOCKEY IS BACK!!!
Lets all enjoy what we have,a strong Isles team makesthe rivarly better and the game more interesting.
I don't see the Rangers getting past Buffalo so let have a good off season.
I will enjoy my the beach, fishing and camping but once the night sweeps over me with the slight hint of chill I will grin with glee cause hockey season will be with us once again.
Hockey Rues!!!!!!!
Nolan was on again between OT periods, and was gushing about the Sabres' depth and about the contributions they get from the whole team, including role players. Hehehe...
Canucks win!! Congratulations Kevin T!!!!
Thanks KH, you must have been the difference! Nice to see a character guy like Cowan get the winner.
Kevin T.
Nice win for the Canucks...My brother in law is still partying in my bar in the basemant.....Gonna make him do yard work today for keeping me and the family up all night!
Thanks for the in-depth coverage Greg! It truly was a great luxury all year to have just a little more insight on the team. Enjoy your summer and accrued time off. But be warned! If something big happens (signings..trades..hit men taking out Yashin..etc) you'd better not snooze too long! You set the bar for excellence in Islanders coverage and we'd hate to have to rely on knuclheads like Larry Brooks breaking the news!
To all posters, its been enlightening as well as entertaining posting with you, though I tend to read more than post... Some of you guys really know your hockey...
Have a great summer everyone and please, for the love of Nystrom, don't any of you crazy puckheads go stalking Smyth! We don't need to scare him off the Island!!!
Until next time!
Fantastic job, Greg. Hope you have a great summer.
Fantastic job, Mr Logan.
Have a great summer and keep those updates coming.
This blog proved Isles have great fan support and merit coverage as New York's number one hockey team.
Thanks very much Greg for your coverage and the creation of the blog this year. I enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts and sharing the season.
Good luck to your Canucks Kevin T. There are quite a few former Isles on that team, so I'll be pulling for them. Have a good summer everyone.
Thank you, Greg. Loved the blog, and all the extra insight into this exciting Isles team. Can't wait for next season already!
First... congrats to Kevin T. Great to see a Canadian team shine, and to do so with former Isles, although bittersweet, is good to see.
Rangers played well last night. They're obviuously a different team when their top D man is on the ice. But that said, I really do think that Buffalo played one of their worst games in a long time. Their timing and flow were off all night. Obviously the Rangers play, particularly in the neutral zone, had something to do with it. But Buff just wasn't really skating like they could've. That pass from Stafford was, uh... SWEET. Look for Buffalo to skate a lot harder on Sunday.
Greg - What can I say, other than a heartfelt THANKS. I think all who regularly posted here during the year, whether occasionally or frequently, know that something special was established with this blog. So many good, insightful comments - and some good old fashioned smack too - it's been a blast. But I think the real credit needs to go to you Greg. You set the tone with your writing. Sure, we complained sometimes. Some of us complained more than others. But you gave us enough depth in your coverage that it kept all of us coming back. You continually prompted us to want to spill our guts about our Islanders passion. So thanks again. I'll still be posting here as the offseason progresses... and I'm looking forward BIG TIME to a great '07-'08 season.
Let's go Mets.
The coming of age for Campoli and Gervais occurred during the very last game. In the third period they once again played with poise and confidence. It's too bad it took the team being desparately behind before Danny(The Clown)Flynn accidently found out what a large number of us had already known; these guys are ready for prime time. This will at least assist Garth Snow and the management team in ensuring the right people (Flynn) end up in Bridgeport for conditioning next season.
Kevin T. Congrats on your Canucks. With all these overtime games, I'm really glad I don't live on the east coast!!
I've always like the Canucks even though they're in our division. I really hope they can drown the ducks. It's no secret that we're not exactly in love with Chris Pronger here. And you're right - there is something wrong about engraving the word "Ducks" on the Stanley Cup. I think my 7 year-old daughter put it best. When we told her that the Mighty Ducks changed their names to just the "Ducks", she said. If you're going to have the name "duck" wouldn't you want to be "mighty"? Yeah, no doubt....
Grat job this year Greg! Your coverage on the trade deadline was awesome. We all felt we had the inside scoop and were glued to your blog. I am looking forward to next season already. Thanks!
I may be one of the younger real posters on this board, weighing in at a whopping 16 years old but even as a teenager I truly appreciate your coverage... It has given me some good insight on this organization and more of that stuff that those smelly rag fans lack... Hockey Smarts!
Does anyone know where Bouchard is, that man fell off the face of the earth!
Thanks Again Logan! and thanks again Isles for not being a true upset this season.
Greg, Thank you so much for contributing so much valueable infornation to this blog. I was one of the many that found my way here during the trade deadline and I haven't left since. As a transplanted North Bellmore, LI to Glendale, Arizona Islander fan from the mid-seventies, this blog has re-kindled the days when my friends and I would ride our bicycles to the Stanley Cup parades on Hempstead Turnpike and play roller hockey in the street everyday afterschool. This is my first comment and I have a wealth of Islander memories and some opinions to contribute here in the future. But at this time, I just wanted to thank Greg and all the fans who have added interesting comments on this blog for making this some of the most enjoyable hockey and Islander reading I've experienced in years. LET'S GO ISLANDERS FOREVER. Thanks, Jim.
Thanks for the extra effort on the blog, Greg. Very nice job all season long.
Big thanks to Greg for all the great info. I never thought twice about the Islanders before "the trade". Well actually that's not true - did think about them long time ago when we both had good teams (80's) but back then I was just a kid. They just happened to beat our Oilers (not nice!!). I've really come to appreciate this team and will follow them regardless of Smyth signing or not. Having this blog has been great.
And thanks to all the Islander fans who have put up with all my "we love Ryan..." and "I remember when...". I don't have to keep telling you guys how special he is - you know. I hope he signs with one of us. I haven't posted often, but I've certainly enjoyed reading your comments - I guess I'm a closet eavesdropper. July 1st will be interesting.
And thanks to Kevin T. for his regular posting here. I think you've managed to spark some interest in the West for these Eastern fans. It appears that the Canucks have gained a few Islander fans as well. (I don't want to say I'm worried for the Canucks, but more fans cheering can't hurt!!)
Looking forward to next year. Until then Ottawa vs. Vancouver - Vancouver wins!!
Greg,
Thank you for opening up this venue and giving it direction. Have a wonderful vacation. I am looking forward to your coverage.
It should be an interesting few months... and very busy for Mr. Snow. To think of all the good things that COULD happen is silly without realizing where it starts from. For a scarier perspective, here are the players that are signed for next year:
Yashin, Alexei 7,600,000
DiPietro, Rick 4,500,000
Satan, Mir 4,250,000
Witt, Brendan 2,500,000
Sillinger, M 2,100,000
Bates, Shawn 1,200,000
Bergeron, Marc 1,000,000
Martinek, Rad 750,000
Park, Richard 500,000
Meyer, Freddy 500,000
$25M of a $44M(?) cap.
Add another 2.2M for RFA's Hunter and campoli and you go into the free agency period with barely enough to win 20 games... but they do have some cap space. It should be darn interesting indeed!
Good health all, and hope to see your comments as things unfold.
I was just thinking the other day how nice it is for my team to be a regular playoff participant again after always having to root for someone else during the dark seven-year drought Islander fans endured before the past few seasons.
As for next year, I can definitely see a scenario in which Yashin is back, along with Blake and Smyth. Initially, upon aquiring Smyth, I thought it was certainly the end for Yashin on the Island after this season, but now I think they will bring him back and they should. If only this season could have been injury-free for him we wouldn't have this debate on our hands because he was well on pace for 100 points. I think he's gotten a bad rap dring his time with the Isles. Even as one of his biggest supporters, I have grown tired sometimes at his seemingly apathetic approach to the game, but that's just his stoic nature. I think if he's allowed to play on the wing with easier defensive responsibilities, he'll flourish. Also, how many players, a captain no less, would have been subjected to the ignominy of being demoted to the fourth line and maintained a professional approach. No. 79 needs to be back.
I think even with salary cap restrictions, the Isles can afford Yashin, Smyth and Blake with some creative financing. After all if they're going to go after a Drury or Gomez anyway, why not just re-sign your own quality free agents?
I also think as long as they offer him a good deal, Smyth will remain an Isle. He's probably already realized Edmonton isn't the center of the universe after all and that he fits perfectly into what Nolan and Snow are trying to build. He'll be back.
"I want to be an Islander." This is what Blake said upon not being moved at the deadline. Now, when was the last time anyone could be heard saying that in recent years? Enough said.
All in all, I love the direction the team is taking. Can't wait until next season!
The management team has waited far too long to cut Yashin free. Smyth will need a minimum 6 mill to return to the Island and Yash still being on the books only minimizes an already miniscule chance.
"Who's you daddy?"
Nice English moron. Figures the second your teams wins your right back here b/c you have NO WHERE ELSE To go. Sad actually. Your win is not enough. You must of had one miserable up bringing seeing all those Isles cups and having ISles fans stuff you in your school locker.
Just like MSG stole "Sweet Caroline" from the Red Sox...The chimes of the home run bells from "The Yankees," and now you steal Who's your daddy. Don't you have any imagination. How can you be our "daddy" when we were 5-1-2 against you this year? You are pathetic.
Miggsey~ I agree....They need to strike quickly here!
DP ~ Fun game yesterday. Congrats. Game 4 obviously a must win!
Ryan wondered about the Bergenheim situation and I have to say I believe it was down to his agent. The agent underestimated where the Isles stood and his attempt to play it hard backfired on his client. It just wasn't reasonable to turn down a one-way deal at this point in Bergenheim's career. I think Bergenheim himself is a nice kid, I've watched him ever since he played in the juniors in Finland. He had a decent start in the Russian league this season, but his club soon sacked the head coach who had signed Bergenheim and the player was out of favor with the new guy. Bergenheim then came back to Finland to train with Jokerit and then signed to play in the Swedish elite league. He had a very good season there, 16+17 in 36 games, but his team didn't qualify for the playoffs because of a rotten start to the season. He's now playing in the World Championships, he scored against Ukraine and assisted on a goal against Denmark, both easy games for Finland. Franz Nielsen got an assist for the Danes' second goal. Bergenheim also scored a goal in each of Finland's pre-tournament friendlies against Latvia and Canada.
And thanks to Greg for a great blog. Finns can read too, believe it or not.
Yes a big win for the Rangers...9 penalties called on them...could have called about 15...but Buffalo not scoring on the power play, so it's not a bad strategy.
Can't see Sabres losing Game 4, but if they can't score on the power play they will lose again. I would expect them to be practicing their power play, and make adjustments.
They still look like the much better team on the ice to me...in all 3 games.
Steady,
Sweet caroline...It comes from something that was the teams last year. One of the guys actually started it in the locker room and MSG ran with it. Game was an amazing time yesterday and look forward to getting there tomorrow night already.
TD,
Buffalo should have buried us early, just as we could have avoided OT all together. Say what you want and I don't want to argue with you or make it a topic. The officials on and off the ice were HORRIBLE. But, as i said to you guys here and will say it to myself and fellow fans...no use crying over spilt milk. Suck it up and we found the way to win. We played 3 teams yesterday, the same way the Islanders had to many times. The Sabres, The Zebras and the Stooges. lol I honestly like you saying that the Sabres looked like the better team. They are the better team. Bottom line is the better team doesn't always win.
Of course I wouldn't say different. But, I look for the Rangers to win tomorrow. I feel like they have learned alot in the last 3 games playing the Sabres and they are gaining momentum. Tomorrow night this becomes a best of 3. If it does go the other way then I would just hope to use my game six ticket and get to one more game.
Rosival scoring game winner was great! The guy is on a bum knee, a target and played the most minutes of any guy on the ice yesterday. Fitting to me.
Mookie,
Just calling it the way I see it.
The officials called a good game. The Rangers were all over them....and they should do the same if the Sabres can't score on the PP...too fancy if you ask me.
I wouldn't go crazy...they played with heart...didn't want to lose...but they scored one goal at home...pretty pathetic if you ask me.
What did the Rangers learn? That they can't skate with them and have to hook, grab and hold them.
I think they learned that Buffalo is weak on the power play..but I can't imagine they won't readjust.
Good Luck.
TD,
What I meant about learn was the following.
The Rangers pounded on them yesterday. They threw the body and finished more checks in one game yesterday then in previous two. Have to wear Buffalo down physically.
They out shot them. They need to do that and crash the net and score goals like Jagrs. Dirty goals on the door step.
They defended better. Keeping buffalo to the outside and D was better at clogging the neutral zone and getting back with the rush going the other way.
Lundqvist kept them in the game and will have to steel another to keep them in the series.
I am not saying that the Rangers looked stellar and found the secret recipe. I just think that they have made adjustments to play with the Sabres better.
Also, the Rangers 0 for 5 on their PP is totally unacceptable.
You watched the game right? Rachuneks goal was no goal? What you think?
That was a goal....Again Buffalo is getting the calls. I WARNED YOU !
It is funny to listen to wfan on my computer and hear all the ranger fans complaining about the calls, the video replays, etc. Meanwhile these are probably the same people who called us Isles fans all wah wah wah wah babies a week ago. Now you know how we felt!
NOT YOU MOOKIE....I am now writing to the one line wonders.
El Duque on the DL...ughh
Finnish,
thanks for the Bergy update. When he was with the Isles last year he seemed to be just what a Nolan would have looked for. I guess they didn't want to take a chance on a one-way with a new coach and limited options so they went with guys like Park and Hilbert instead. Good plan if bergenhiem was only going to play 30-40 games or 5-8 minutes with the Isles anyway.
I would think he has a very good chance of playing with them this year based on their roster, but I haven't seen him since his NHL games. Do you get the feeling he's NHL ready. I was thinking of him as a second/third liner. A cheaper option than re-signing Zednik... which would add a little grit, but lose a little speed. He could easily replace Hilbert on the roster also, though he would most likely be more expensive.
Is that a fair assessment.
I think your assessment is right on...undebateable.
It didn't feel like they outshot them to tell you the truth...primarily because Sabres didn't shoot enough, when they should of...and I think alot of the Ranger shots were soft..except for the one that counted.
OK...the Rachunek goal/no goal...you have to first know my philosophy going in before you call me a bitter Islander fan. I don't believe that goals off the skate should be allowed when a player is in the crease. If he is outside of the crease, then, I guess, it's ok. In this case...he was outside and then inside the crease
I felt he directed the puck in the net...didn't think it was a redirection.
He obviously turned his skate to redirect, but then he dragged the puck into the net.
I can understand your frustration, it could go either way, but I personally hate those type of goals going in...and what about the 2 no calls leading into that play...the one we're the sabre was dragged down at the redline, and then when another one was dragged down on the side board?
Based on all of that it was probably fair justice...but based on the rule and the "distinct kicking motion" you have an argument.
To me the rule should be "you can redirect the puck into the net with your skate but not direct the puck into the net with your skate."
He dragged te puck in the net, which I believe is considered a kicking motion.
What do you think?

Here's what one Canadian media guy thought of the Rangers game last night.
http://www2.sportsnet.ca/blogs/jim_kelley/2007/04/30/no_ones_getting_buffaloed/
Oilerfan,
Good article. As a Rangers fan dead on to me. But, I am a Rangers fan...lol
TD,
The shots were soft and that pissed me off as well. I think it was more about just getting the puck in deep and hoping for the best.
I hear your argument about the redirection and the debate is a fun one. Calls were missed both ways all night long but, the lopsided amount has to tilt the head of anyone watching and involved. 7-2 Sabres in regulation...
How about this, I cant believe I just went to the Rule Book. Pominvilles goal that was allowed the other night:
A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who bats the puck with his hand directly into the net. A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who bats the puck and it is deflected into the net off any player, goalkeeper, or Official.
So? What happened there? No discretion of intent or not, like all the other calls. This one pretty much says you can't score off your hand. So I hope it didn't hit his hand...
LOL, just for arguments sake and to point out the inconsistency of the NHL, the refs and Toronto.
Mookster,
Fair enough on the calling, if you feel they should keep things equal...but I do feel the Rangers were the more aggressive team and took some more liberties...as they should, they were the home team....I actually think it helped them get some rest as they were able to dump the puck out of the zone. LOL.
Anyway, the rule is "batting the puck" I don't think he batted the puck. If he batted the puck and it hits anything or anyone, it is no goal. I don't think he "batted" it...but he was in the crease, so based on my rule system it should have not been a goal....based on the NHL Rules it was a goal.
Just like it wouldn't be consider a hand pass if the puck hit his glove with his hand on the stick.
By the way...if his hand was off the stick when the puck hit his glove, I am confident it would have been no goal....He took his glove off the stick after the puck hit his glove, to prepare for impact.
Great blogs.. cant wait until next year.
Hopefully Garth will sign Andy Sutton or Sheldon Souray
TD,
Ok, I was reaching...Wanna go round two and go off on each other for a while so I can just let out my frustrations? LOL...Kidding. I guess I need to just be glad that the Rangers have played pretty well the past two games and despite all the outside crap took a W out of yesterday.
You probably have a point. Maybe the penalties are a good thing. Take the physical liberties and let their horrific PP have the puck for a few minutes. Scary part is the Rangers are better on both special teams I believe and they need their PP paying off.
Mookster,
Agreed...be happy with the win, they deserved it...gotta make your own breaks, and with or without the penalties, the Rangers played a more passionate game....but realistically speaking, I think the Sabres will play with their backs to the wall tomorrow...therefore the Rangers better work on their power play, because are definitely going to need it tomorrow night.
Prediction: Special teams will be the difference. Goaltending as expected is a wash...slight edge to Miller but not enough to matter.
When Ted Nolan was on Versus a few days ago he remarked that he thought the one element Buffalo was missing was enought grit. I think that was revealed throughout yesterday's game, as the the Rangers eventually wore them out (as DP/Mookie said earlier). But I think the slow ice was the primary reason the Rangers were able to play that game and hold the Sabres to one goal. It was obvious the puck was bouncing all over the place and the Sabres obviously couldn't use their speed in transition. Tomorrows game is a night game, but probably it'll be just as warm. If the ice is slow again, it's gonna go back to Buffalo 2-2.
I only discovered this blog a few weeks ago so I missed out on a lot of conversation. Something I hope to fix next year. Anyways I have to say Greg Logan did a great job with the blog this year and I look forward to it again.
As for the goalies in the Rangers-Sabres series. I think they are even. Though he played great in games 1 and 2, Miller didn't look as sharp in game 3. I felt he was off his angles a bit and did a little too much scrambling. Credit the Rangers for making this happen. Lundqcvist on the other hand looked sharper in net. It also helped that the Rangers were throwing themselves desperately in front of the puck.
Could be CINCY.
Funny thing is the Super Bowl conditions are too perfect, the World Series conditions are too cold, Hockey conditions are too warm and the NBA condtions no one gives a s**t about. LOL
LOL
Sad TV ratings.
In NY Metro area yesterdays game did a 1.9 .... In buffalo a 40 .... Obviously Buffalo is a lot smaller area. Very sad to see no one watches our great sport. Other then us Puck Heads no one cares about this sport.
Funny post above TD...VERY TRUE !!! Hockey should hand out the cup in early March. Start season in Sept. and end in FEB.
What's the NBA?
LOL.
That is the league that use to have Michael Jordan. lol
The Byron Nelson Classic had higher ratings then the Rags game yesterday....Soon the NHL will be found on the same channel as WWF if fans do not start coming back. If they get rid of fighting, you will find the games on as repeats after the Conane O'Brien Late Late Show......With Rosie O' Donnel doing play by play.
Playoffs should begin the Monday before the NCAA final four weekend. This way your still in April for the conference finals. No one wants to watch hockey on a sunny 70-degree Sunday afternoon in May. I had a great day outside yesterday while my DVR took care of business. For me, it was midnight when Rozsival's shot hit the back of the net.
Very funny.
DVR great invention!
As for the fans and watching.
It is time the NHL realizes that they are not attracting anything. Hockey is cult following and it's up to us to make sure the next generation keeps this sport anywhere near close to the map. Let alone on it.
Agreed...It's definitely a winter sport and I think you guys make some great points on the scheduling.
Season could be shortened to 72 games...just like baseball should be shortened back to 154 games...once you add in the wild card in baseball, and made each series best of 7 in hockey, they threw the enite seasons out of whack.
IF I saw that shot hit the net at midnight I would of been sick all night. Thank God I had the Soprano's to take my mind off it before bed. lol
Steady,
Agreed. Only thing better then Miller vs. Lundqvist yesterday was Tony vs. Carmela lastnight.
Steady,
See and I thank god that I had the Sopranos to help me relax and go to bed...for different reasons.
The Garden was still rocking in my head as i laid in bed...lol
The fact that I can watch that game at midnight and not have to worry one bit about seeing a final score anywhere (in Cincinnati) is testament to how sad the coverage of this sport is. That's why late March, early April is so important. Football and college hoop are done, the weather is still cold and baseball hasn't really started yet. The NHL needs to have the playoffs in full swing BEFORE baseball starts. And the games need primetime weekend NITE coverage. Otherwise we're back to competing with bull fighting, pro bowling and Paulie Walnuts.
I get terrified when you continually see regular bloggers ( like Cincy's latest) make more sense than the league and our management on decisions.
I say there's absolutely NO WAY Ryan Smyth will resign with the Oilers. They had their chance and now he's seen what life can and will be outside of Edmonton. It'll be a shame IF Snow and Cmpy did not have an iron clad, can't refuse offer from before the actual trade took place for Smitty.
MIGGSEY,
AMEN TO THAT!
Good stuff Greg. I can't wait for the first signing from the Isles. I can only hope to see the headline "Smithtown LI, changed to Smythtown LI!"
Sorry to enter the discussion late... but I have to agree with those complaining about the no goal. If you see hunters goal against buf in game 2, there was no replay or anything. That was more of a distict kicking motion, too. I really hate to agree with rags fans, but its another example of how sh+tty officiating and reviews have been. I'm only 27, so my memory bank isn't as full as some of yours, but I only remember such problems since like '99... and getting progressively worse. What made the officiating so bad??? 2 ref system??? Decrease in ref quality??? Wtf???
I'm definitely no Rangers partisan, but I'll say the following:
- Avery looked like a real hockey player last night. The kid's fast; apparently he's figured out how to move one skate in front of another without tripping (when another player is conveniently close).
- The replays of Rachunek's 'goal' were not decisive, so the on-ice call of 'goal' should have stood.
I have to admit a little piece of me died inside when I found out Buffalo wasn't going to sweep the Rangers.
Ryan - "The replays of Rachunek's 'goal' were not decisive, so the on-ice call of 'goal' should have stood."
This has been my biggest problem with video review. Rachunek's foot moving forward at the last second could be construed as a "kick," however a reversal of the on-ice call is supposed to be "100% certain". In addition to the video evidence right before our collective eyes, the fact that the analysts in between periods were arguing endlessly about it even through the overtimes shows that there's no way to prove it was a "distinct kicking motion" with 100% certainty. The league should just simply take that language out if they're not going to abide by it. From the reviews I have seen in the post season, it appears that they look at the video, and just go with their thoughts on the play regardless of what the call on the ice was - so if that's the case, then just say it.
Buffalo has benefited from four video reviews so far that definitely were not clear cut one way or the other. The calls were not necessarily wrong (though that's debateable!), but we can probably agree that they could have reasonably gone either way. That said, I'm fairly certain that three of the four calls have been reversals. On plays so close, you would think the percentage of reversals would be a touch under 75% if there is supposed to be absolutely no question of doubt for the on-ice call to be overturned.
Looking forward to seeing Colie Campbell's brilliant plan for this "video review overhaul" over the summer.
themass: I think the 2-ref system, as it exists now, is awful. That they can both make calls at any time on any play is chaotic. Not to mention, sometimes two refs are calling two different types of games, so a touch of the stick on an arm one play is a penalty in one ref's eyes, but not the other's, leading to inconsistencies that drive coaches, players, and fans crazy. Imagine if baseball had two home plate umpires with varying strike zones, and you never knew which one was going to make the call on any given pitch. That's the NHL's method of officiating.
No "conspiracies," just a horribly flawed, very subjective system.
I think you're right "upstate." Your point gives me a thought... would it be a benefit to keep the 2 official system, but give them both half of the ice?... seperated by the red line. I know that it wouldn't eliminate 2 different officiating styles... but it would take away the calls made by the trailing ref... when the play is five feet away from the other ref. On the other hand if it returns to a single ref system then you could eliminate half the officials in the nhl and keep only the better half
On replays--- someone on this blog a while back had a good idea. Put small cameras right behind the cross bar looking down at the net. I've seen cameras disguised as buttons on jackets so how hard can it be? A wide angle lens right inside the cross bar would not be obstructed by anything... and would almost never get hit by the puck. Its a good idea, which makes me believe that the NHL will never adopt it.
Great points above guys. Problem is the NHL is run by a bunch of good old boys that think they are above the fans.
Colie Campbell is going to pull a "Vito Jr." when pressed to come up with a good idea...plop right on the floor. lol The guy is a Moron and hates our team. Simple fact.
Huge game tonight for the rags...Win and we got a great seven game series...Lose and it is over same as the Isles...At least if they win we get the one line bandits back to play with and I can let "Library" out of his cage.
Mookie~ yah think D. Wright will ever get another hit? My God???? Now I hear Alou is going on the DL...That is what we get when you stock up with old men like El Duque~Alou~Green~Delgado,Valentine, etc.
Negative news from Stan Fischler's blog on the Isles chances to sign Blake or Smyth. I'm worried.
Islanders’ fans would dearly love to see Jason Blake back in Nassau next season but, according to one informant, there’s a very good chance that the scoring ace will be playing elsewhere. Meanwhile Alexei Yashin is making it clear he would forsake the Isles’ captaincy should Ryan Smyth re-sign with the Isles. Garth Snow has used Hall of Famers Mike Bossy and Brian Trottier in an effort to lobby Smyth to make Long Island a more permanent home. Our guess: Is that Snow has a 50-50 chance – at best. The Avalanche and Stars are now considered among the more avid teams chasing the soon to be free agent.
Steady,
Well sitting here waiting to head to the Garden. The place is going to buzz so loud tonight that you will hear it in Mass...lol
GOD I HOPE THEY PULL THIS ONE OUT!!!
As for the Mets, not looking so great! D Wright is a big upset so far...the line to the DL is getting longer then one for a ladies room at a sporting event, Offense isn't coming through the way they should and Starting rotation Hurts!!! Hope things change.
Talk to you later...Off to go have a few beers, lose my voice and probably suffer a mild hear attack.
Lets GO __________!
Fischler is an idiot and a Ranger Homer....no credibility.
Game 4 Prediction:
Sabres 4 Rangers 2
Still haven't bought out yashin's contract? What are they waiting for? I hope they're not hoping next year will be his long awaited breakout year. Every day I'm waking up and expecting the news.
Mass,
You cannot buy out contracts until June 1st. Also do not take anything Fischler says seriously, he is as bad as Larry Brooks when it comes to credibility.
Have to give Yagr props. He's hitting and coming back defensively. I've never seen him down behind the goalie protecting the net. It's got to inspire the rest of the Rangers to see him so committed.
Bravo!
Kevin T.
It's apparent after watching the Rangers tie up their series with Buffalo (2-2) that the officiating and the officails in the war room in Toronto have clearly decided who they want to move on in the playoffs. The officiating has been horrible. 2 missed goals for the Islanders, and now a missed goal for Buffalo with 13 seconds left to go to tie it up before the period eneded. These playoffs are fixed I tell ya. BOOOOOO
Hey TD, you are certainly prophetic, however the final score was Rangers two Sabers one.
Prediction, TD will make up some excuse of why he is an inane hump.
Suggestion, just keep your mouth closed and you will seem more intelligent.
Jonathan, have you watched a game this playoff season?!
Buffalo has had four straight reviews go their way!
You morons were saying in the Isles/Buffalo series that the league wanted Buffalo to move forward, now they want the Rangers!? Make up your mind and even better, make a cohesive point.
And the #1 Star of the game?
THE GARDEN ICE
A disgrace to watch hockey games this day and age on ice like that.
The ice at Nassau is like glass, eh, Zamboni.
It's the officials, the ice, the crowd, the tired Buffalo team, are you Islanders fans desperate or what?
You wouldn't have even mentioned the ice unless the color moron doing the game on VS mentioned it. Now you are acting as if this was a revelation and you knew it all the time.
Shut up.
Zamboni,
Funny.
CJ,
Funny in a moronic kind of way. Your goaltender was a c+nt hair away from being the biggest bum in these playoffs. So I think you should keep your trap shut.
Here's another prediction:
Sabres still win this series. Is that stupid and unintelligent?
CJ,
Have another beer...the entire hockey community has been talking about the garden ice...but the Rangers did what they had to do.
They won, great effort...what else you need to hear?
CJ,
After that post...just time to say goodnight.
*YAWN*
G'night kids. SOme of us will wake up to a team in the playoffs and others will just fume and root against them.
Kiss Kiss
CJ ~
Are you serious? The first thing you do after a win is come on here and talk smack. You come on the Isles blog after a win? No friends to call? Library closed? McDonalds not open fatty? Food stamps run out?
You are CLUELESS about hockey. Go to bed. You are beyond a loser.
How is the best goalie in hockey doing? Yah now Luongo that is getting his neck tan nightly by the lamp? CLUELESS!!!
Stay off our blog LOSER. You cannot spell, your grammer is horrible, and no one likes you. Your own fans hate you. Sad I say. Sad!
That was a goal. Guarantee John and or DP agrees the Buffalo shot at the end was a goal. They owed you one and gave it to you. Shame on them.
Now go to your yellow book VITO JR. and call your 900 #'s.
You seriously are pathetic. The day I go on another teams blog and start ranting and raving after my team gets a big win is the day I blow my head off.
Sad I say....SAD !!!
cj = Vito jr.
steady-
how come this cj guy does not post when his team is losing? Or does he post under another name like a coward? Typical. Classy guy huh. We should all feel bad for him not fight back, he obviously is broke and lonely. Why do you tell him to go to the library? Missed that one I guess. Anyway, you slammed him down good. Hopefully he will crawl back in his cave.
The "Kiss Kiss" at the end tells me all I need to know about Vito Jr.
The inconsistency with which the league applies video review is simply astounding. Just let the calls on the ice stand. They'd get the same percentage of calls correct anyway, and it would save everyone a lot of grief.
I think it's safe to say that we all felt it was in, but at the same instant we knew they were going to say no goal. Just couldn't give Sabres that one. I even couldn't give them that one. Briere reactiuon didn't help any...he's the only one who knows. He didn't react much.
Where was the center ice camera they used to call the Vanek Goal against us? Garden doesn't have one? I thought they complained about our arena not having camera angles?
IF anyone can tell me the difference between the NO GOAL called tonight and the GOAL called against the Isles (Although there were many...In this instance I am talking about the one that they say crossed the line, then lost sight of it, then DP saved, YET no one ever saw clearly go in) that they OVERTURNED....I will give them a thousand bucks....
Not taking anything away from the Rangers as they deserved to win this game playing on that choppy ice, but if the one they called against us was a goal, then that HAD to be a goal.
The refs and Replay are horrendous for BOTH sides....Shame. Another black eye on the sport we love.
Steady,
I agree and I agree they deserved to win.
Sabres couldn't click on any of their passes...it was ugly out there. Power Play could be their downfall.
Even on their goal...Connolly tripped on a rutt in the ice and then made his pass to Kovalik.
I personally think it was boring "hockey" but it was certainly great theater fro the ranger fans.
If there was a small camera just inside the crossbar there would be no discussion about the no-goal.
Philly fan-- thanks for the info bro
HOLY HSIT! BATMAN!
Dont' have much for you guys. Big Win that changes the rest of this series. I mean making it longer, a best of 3. I am not dumb enough to sit here and act like we just took over the series.
Steady,
I will have to watch the DVR. It's funny I listened to two different shows on the radio on the ride home. One said definitely inconclusive and the other said the Rangers got a big break. I don't have an opinion yet.
The only other thing I can add is that they had the Ice Expert guy for the NHL on XM the other day. Phil Esposito was interviewing him. He ranked MSG's ice in the top 10 for the past 5-10 yrs because of changes they have made.
Please, realize I am just passing along info. Not making it up to be a homer or anything like that. I can see the puck bounce too!
Did D wright actually go yard tonight???
Congrats Mookie.....
You may be in for a fun ride.
D Wright looked very good at the plate. Not level swing, not trying to win the HR derby. lol
IF you trust my opinion at all over the past few months, Trust ME....It was a goal.....So was the one the Rangers scored the other night that they called kicked in. So was the Isles 4 gaols they got jobbed on. BOTTOM LINE. NHL is in trouble, as they are going to be considered WWF soon.
So refreshing to see that the koolaid drinkers are still here in abundance. Amazing that you have no ability to be objective. Was the puck in last night, sure it was could the video prove it, NO. You must see the puck fully across the line, you can't assume it is under the pad, there must be visual evidence no assumptive evidence. By all video shots there is not one clear shot that shows the entire puck across the line. Did it get across fully most likely YES it did, was there any clear visual evidence NO there wasn't that is why this was NO GOAL! If the Goalie is sitting on the Puck in the net there still needs to be clear evidence that the puck is there. How hard is that to understand? All these games are close as hell and yes they will all be determined by some element of good fortune. Bottom line right now is Buffalo is haveing trouble playing the kind of game they want to play and the Rangers are playing the way they want to. Will this get them the series? Maybe not, yet the longer it goes and the more difficult it becomes the more it favors the Rangers. The Best team in the East continues to be Ottawa. The Senators are going to be the one's to beat. They are playing the style and pace that suits them and even the Devils with the vaunted trap cannot slow this team off their game. Buffalo can be directed off their game, Ottawa cannot. The formidable beast of the East is the Senators!
Steady,
Yea, it will be a fun ride.
Watched the replay this morning from the VS broadcast. If that was the best hey had in Toronto I think they made the right call.
Was it in? Oh Yea it was.
But, the inconclusive evidence isn't there to support it.
Sitting in my seats. The phones come out. People punch up VS on their PDA's and all that good stuff goes on. Word buzzing the stands was that it was a goal. To see Mcreary wave his arms like that was such a shock. I was getting ready for OT.
Didn't catch the Mets. Too busy with hockey right now. I've been to more games then I have watched...lol
Mookie,
Congratulations...they're making a series out of it.
Still not sold on them yet winning the series, but I did feel whomever won Game 4 was going to take the series, so I'll stick by that....but it won't be easy.
TD,
Playoff hockey boy!
Great how every game becomes the biggest they have played all year.
I'm not crazy enough to be sold just yet either. If they can pull out the upset in Buffalo friday. Then I will be.
Every game has been too close. This thing is far from over. But, the Sabres have to be the littlest bit rattled at this point starting with Lindy. They also are containing them in a way that just amazes me. The Sabres are all about the transition game and the Rangers are shutting that down and bringing it right back in their faces. We almost stand a better chance have a PP duel with them. They can't do anything setting up in the zone it seems.
Henrik needs to continue to play his best. He has been HUGE! They need to continue to bring the body to every Sabre that touches the puck. The Rangers can't change a thing they are doing. Let buffalo continue to try and change things.
9th straight win in the Garden. 12 of last 13 games at home are a win. They have to get the job done at least once on the road.
Can they is the question...
msg4ever: nice rationalization about the visual evidence thing. But it was a goal. And there was visual evidence. Sorry.
DP/mookie: listen to the steady one on this, and go back and watch your DVR again. There is ONE frame in which it's clear AND visual that the puck is over the line completely. It's there. But that said, the stupid Sabres didn't deserve that call anyway. They're choking. And Ruff is the biggest choker. He wants them to play "ugly" hockey? Idiot. Best offense in the league and he wants them to slow it down. He elost them the game. But give the Rangers credit too. They had to play their best, and they did. Henrik is the new dominator.
Just wish Witt's goal had counted and the Isles had the same chance to go back to Buff tied 2-2.
anyone see that ranger game last night? let's go rangers!!!!
why wasn't the ranger game on the back page of newsday? it was the biggest sports story of the day yesterday, cmon newsday, get with it! My God, if its not the icelanders newsday won't put hockey on the back page, what a joke!
Cincy,
I will take another look. Just calling it as I see it. Not trying to start the argument really. We got a break, all I can think when they waved it no goal was two things...HOLY S*IT & THERE IS A GOD. Now that was said sitting there with not much replay or TV guys to listen to. It was a goal no doubt in my mind. But, Sabres have had their share it was nice to get one back.
May have said it before but I pray that Lindy and the Sabres continue to try this or that and adjust.
Many picked the Rangers is 6 or 7. Many picked the Sabres in 6 or 7. Many were crazy enough to think the series was over in 4 when the Sabres went up 2-0.
And now...
MANY ARE CHANGING THEIR TUNE!
I ask you Cincy and the other level headed people here this...
Have the Rangers not been the better team this series?
anyone have any ranger tickets available for the next round?
hey Mookie, its about time the breaks evened out a bit, buffalo had been getting ALL the calls in the playoffs.
are you related to Mookie Wilson?
is game five on msg?
mook - the better team in each game (IMHO)...
game 1 - Sabres, by a lot
game 2 - Sabres
game 3 - Rangers
game 4 - Sabres
Game 4 is obviously the game open to most debate. And as I've said earlier, Ruff played into the Rangers hands by trying to change styles to a more grinding game. But Buffalo did have more and better scoring chances for the majority of the game. Rangers came out flying and Buffalo was whimpy early, but it more than reversed by the end of the first period. The early Jagr goal in the 2nd gave the Rangers momentum thru the period, but Buffalo easily carried play in the 3rd, even before the push in the last 5 minutes. Switch goalies and it's probably 4-2 Buffalo.
Ruff is gonna catch a lot of flack in the Buffalo press for his strategy the past 2 games. You'll see a different Sabres in game 5.
BTW - Wright's swing wasn't even close to level last night. LOL.
anyone?
hey cincy, the rangers outplayed buffalo in game 2 all you had to do was watch it to know that. miller stole that one.
Cincy,
For now I am just going to agree to disagree with you. Thanks for your opinion and thoughts though. I enjoy them, you know an outside look.
I think Buffalo can try to change things up but, I think just the same the Rangers can force them a bit.
what's up with the mets?
Steady - I was going to say the same thing about last night's review and game 3 - nearly identical! - even though I'm sure we're both aware that we're beating a dead horse!
In both cases, my opinion is that they were in based on where the puck was heading, but since you don't actually see the pucks, in both instances, over the line with white in between the rubber and the goal line, then it cannot be 100% to reverse. The calls on the ice should stand in both cases. But, oh well.
Very impressed with the Rangers in this series so far. Buffalo looks slow, but that, I think, is mostly due to the Rangers' pressure in all three zones. They're executing the same game plan the Isles used, but doing it with better results at this stage. Credit where credit is due - they're doing a very nice job. And they've carried the play in games 2, 3, and 4, imo.
game 3 = against the Isles in above post, of course...
gary: obviously it's just a judgement call. But I gave the nod to the Sabres on the strength of the 3rd period comeback. Miller definately was the difference though. That's why he got 1st star. Same with Hank last night.
Mookie: as an Islander fan it's just so hard not to be jealous. Closely played, one goal games, video reviews... it could've easily been the Isles in this position. Gotta hand it to the Rangers, though. Jagr is dominating. The Sabres are playing scared. And Avery hasn't even scored yet! LOL.
REALITY CHECK
Rangers doing what they have to do to win...I said before the series that they can win in 7 if they can play a defensive minded game.
That being said...Ruff had no choice but to change his strategy...his team couldn't pass the puck on the tape passed 15 feet. The ice is just teribble. Tough for both teams, but it neutralizes Buffalo's speed strength and exposes their power play weakness.
May Weather + Garden on 5th Floor + Steaming Train station underneath + heat rising = TERRIBLE ICE.
I don't think people realize how bad the ice is a the garden because the Rangers haven't played a game in May in 13 years, and the ice has generally been good during the regular season.
Cincy,
I hear you and what you are saying loud and clear. I appreciate the talk here with you guys very much. The fact that you guys can be objective and offer a different view is refreshing!
As for Avery, he is saving it for the big moment goal...LMAO!
Let me just throw this one out there...
I think the video review last night goes the other way IF the reversal hadn't been made for the kick-in in game 3. The league caught so much flack for that call (justifiably) that a reversal last night would've opened them up too much to charges of favoritism for the Sabres.
Thoughts?
You could have a point...
My thoughts are this though. If it was say justice or making things fair. I want the 4 calls that went sour for the Isles to be considered for the Rangers in Game 5-6-7...LOL
Serious side to that one though. What does the league get out of favoritism to Buffalo. I would think that they want the Rangers making it much deeper no?
AM I TALKING CONSPIRACY???
GOD, SHOOT ME!
Cincy,
Just the idea that we have to have such thoughts, just goes to show you how messed up the system is.
Let me qualify this by saying that I think the the "conspiracy" talk is nonsense. The problem is the system itself, which leads to inconsistencies, and not favoritism one way or the other. But it's always fun to indulge in the "what ifs" nonetheless, so on that note - Bettman has been at just about every Buffalo game, home and away, gushing about how the Sabres epitomize the spirit of the "New NHL". If he was inclined push the new rules and the new NHL as something to hang his hat on, would he want the speed team to win, or the ones that are trying to slow it down? Next week I'll tackle UFOs and the Lochness Monster :)
I don't believe in a league conspiracy. More importantly, I don't WANT to believe in a league conspiracy.
Here are the facts...
Upstate accurately describes the perception of the Sabres as a "New NHL" team. But that doesn't provide enough motivation for bias, in my opinion.
But... Buffalo was in a state of disarray just a few years ago, having gone thru bankruptcy. They have a brand new arena that's in a very ugly area in a city with a depressed economy. Ownership and city leadership just announced 2 weeks ago plan for a huge retail and entertainment complex to be built adjacent to the Sabres' arena. I'm not drawing conclusions here. This is just stating a fact.
Mookie: you mentioned that you want 4 calls that went sour for the Isles to figure into games 5, 6 and 7. I assume you're including the March 8th Smyth "no-goal" call against the Rangers? Careful what you wish for. LOL.
?
Got a point there Cincy...Just the ones that Buffalo lucked out on then.
I hope that we can win one or two more without the clouds of controversy. I hope to see a game where the phone call isn't even made to Toronto!
Got a question maybe someone can answer.
Ted Nolan, not around the league for like 10 yrs. What played into his name being in the hat for the position with the Isles? How did he land the job? Was it a relationship or something like that? Maybe I should know the answer. Anybody got a clue?
The reason he was out of the league was he supposedly slept with the goalies wife. Not sure how true? All I know is he won coach of the year and then the next year he was out for ten years???? The guy is one heck of a coach. MAybe that is another reason why Isles got so rooked on so many calls? Maybe he is still doing his "Time Out?"
I am pretty sure Smith hired him.
If it were up to Wang we would of had him behind the bench and he would of invented new sticks to use. Guy is out of his bird....
Wang hired Nolan, actually, and was criticized in the press, if I remember right, for not letting Smith hire a coach.
As to Nolan, TB tried to hire him at one point, but he did not want to coach there, and I'm pretty sure the Islanders tried to bring him in in some capacity in the late 90s as well.
The thing with Hasek's wife was speculation at the time - both have since said it's untrue, but that could possibly be to avoid an embarrassing situation for both of them!
There were other problems between Hasek and Nolan though, as well as between Nolan and Muckler (GM at the time). I think Hasek publically said he didn't want Nolan back at one point. They did offer Nolan a one-year deal, but he didn't take it.
As to why he never got another offer (other than TB), when the Isles brought him in, I remember people talking about a reputation for clashing with management, probably because of the Buffalo situation. Maybe that had something to do with it. Either way, the players and fans are happy to have him here now, and he seems happy to be here, so it worked out in the end. Most people in Buffalo still appreciate him as well - I don't think there was any fallout with the fans.
I mean the Rags deserved it, but that was a goal.
ttp://broadband.tsn.ca/?vid=7113
It's over, but wouldn't it have been nice if the Isles were gifted a call like that in our series.
I really could care less who wins the series. If the Rangers win , so be it. The NHL has to fix this sytem that they have in regards to the officiating, on and off the ice.
Steady, please your diaphanous talk about writing came from me originally. So please attempt a barb that originated in your own mind. If you checked the past posts, I did come when the Rangers lost however they do it less frequently than your ex-playoff Islanders.
let us be honest, the reason that Steady is so angry is that i hit a nerve too frequently or mom pulled him away from suckling at the ripe age of five. In fact it might be better if your mother posted on the site, she might have something interesting to say unlike her tot.
You will never win in a war of words or for that matter in any other forum. I love the fact that you get angry and post in frustration. As far as other Ranger fans who arrive here to kiss up to the likes of Islander fans, I wear their distaste as a badge of honor. The garden can do without the fairweather kind.
Now really get worked up an write back. He he he - win again Unsteady
CJ,
Badge of Honor?
You are an idiot...and we all know it. We like you on our blog...you are the atypical Ranger fan that represents your team so well.
All the more reason we root for the New York Islanders.
Also the kind of fan who won't show up on this site when your season is over. You're just another Homer.
CJ - you wear the distaste of other Ranger fans who are willing to honestly debate the relative merits of their team as a "badge of honor"? Sorry pal, but I seriously question whether it might be you who are posting here in anger. Your entire post contained only attacks on Steady, and not one single piece of information, commentary, or anything remotely associated with the sport of hockey or why you favor your team. Why not? Don't have anything to say? Go on, please... we're all willing to listen. And talking a little smack is fine too. Just as long as your willing to back it up with some honest dialogue and knowledge about the sport and your team. Steady can talk smack with the best of them, but he also knows the game and is willing to express himself honestly about it.
Can you intelligently talk about the game of hockey, CJ? Let's see.
Well said CINCY.
Well said by you both.
I can't even respond to this guy because apparently I am a fair weather fan and he wears my distaste.
PATHETIC
Thanks for the back up boys, but for guys like CJ it is just to easy. HE is just looking for an argument b/c he has absolutely nothing better to do. He challenged me long ago to prove him wrong with hockey stats and I did time and time again. He promised he would leave but did not. Shocker!
Dp aka Mookie as well as John (both Ranger Fans) in no way have EVER kissed as^ on this forum. They fight tooth and nail for their team and slip in the occasional jab, which makes them great. What they do not do is come on here and say Rangers rule, Dipietro sux, blah blah blah blah blah, like a four year old. We talk hockey here, something you are obviously unable to do. Sad actually.
So please....Run along now. Hillary and Bama are calling you on the Political Blogs.
If you ever really try and have a true hockey argument you will pull a Vito Jr. right on the floor. (Can't get enough of that line. lol)
For the record if you go back and read I predicted your team would win this series. IT was Ottawa I said would beat you. Buffalo is not physical enough which is why the Simon suspension and Asham broken hand were so costly. Not for the fighting aspect, but for their presence and checking.
Consider yourself smarter having read this CJ.
JPinVA, I do think Bergenheim is ready to play in the NHL now, although of course there's still plenty of room for development. I'd like to see him on the 3rd line, but he can do a job on the 4th as well, not yet on the 2nd line probably. By the way, Bergenheim has again praised Wang who personally called Bergy for happy New Year's wishes in January. Wang has clearly made a huge impression on him.
Cincy ~
Anyone hear from Merrick? Hope all is well with him.
Big game tonight....Thirsty Thursday with good hockey and a late Met game. :)
Wright starting to hit Mookie...Realize you do not care yet, but I will keep you up to date until you just miss winning the cup. :) lol
Poor little Vito Jr. like his father wasn't enough now he takes abuse from Steady...lol
Yea, I'm fair weather because I can talk to you guys. I go to 20-30 games a year. On top of that I catch a few games at the Coliseum. It doesn't get much more fair weather then running your mouth when your team is doing well in the playoffs.
Ducks close the series tonight? Sorry Kevin but, I think so.
Devils out in 5? WHAT A TREAT THAT WOULD BE! Although that means the Rangers would get Ottawa but, if we can get past the Sabres then bring them on!
Didn't expect the Red Wings vs Sharks series to be going the way that one is. I was sold on Sharks but, looks like a long series now with either team coming out on top.
Thanks for the Mets updates. I check the box score and update my fantasy teams. But, Actual watching I have not done much of. Late game tonight gives me good chance.
10 Wins to go...lol
If I were you or any fan of the East that is still in the playoffs, I would pray Detroit Wins the West. They are VERY beatable in my opinion.
Yah my brother in law almost jumped off a bridge when they blew that 2-0 lead the other night (Vancouver.)
Go to NYPOST.COM and read the article on "The blurry view" ....
It is beyond comical how embarrassing Campbell and the rest of the Toronto bobbleheads are. The best line is: "technology keeps changing and we do not want to get outdated!" IS he BLEEPING kidding me??? Technology is constantly going to keep going. Eventually you must step in and buy. Our league is absolutely ridiculous when it comes to the back office.
Campbell must and his good lod boy ignorant morons MUST GO!!!
BACK TO THE ISLANDERS FOR A MOMENT:
What does everyone think of the following offer:
Ryan Smyth - 8 years - 40 Million
I'm hearing some rumors, that this might be what we offer him.
That is the equivilant to the NY MEts giving Pedro the huge contract. We all know he will NEVER play for all 8 yrs. healthy and productive with the type of game he plays and his current age. What he will do is bring other players here and give the team a strong strong foundation. Just the way Pedro brought Beltran ~ Delgado ~ Wagner here to NY as well as put 3 million in the seats again......They simply cannot let him walk and Smyth and his agent know it...So get ready for another laugher contract similar to DP's...
I think 7 for 35 would get it done...no ???
TD,
Or anyone for that matter. Can you recall the offer from the Oilers that he didn't take right before the deadline? I do know that the difference between the offer and what he and his agent wanted was small. I think it was in the area of 6-7 Milllion a year for for 4 or 5. If that is the case then I cant see him taking 5 a year for 8 yrs. If I am wrong on my numbers I apologize and want to see the real ones.
Steady,
Yea he is talking out his little Vito hole...
It also is possible, but not likely, that the two pencil-thin cameras the league installs in the corners of the net for the semifinals and Finals might have been able to detect white space between the puck and goal line. The overhead view is almost invariably the best view. In Game 4, it wasn't good enough.
So there will be special cameras for the next two rounds? WHY NOT THE FIRST TWO???
Steady,
Is that 7 Million a year for 35 years...LMFAO!!!
Now that sounds like a Wang Contract!
The market rate for Smyth has generally been assumed to be 5 years @ 5.5 per (although western teams tend to think that would be overpaying for his abilities). So the Isles have to pay a good premium over that. You can either add years or add money. Wang might have to do both to keep him. Seven years should do it, 37.5 million. But Yashin out and I'd do it in a heartbeat.
I beleive Edmonton offered 5.3 million for 4 or 5 years.
I think 7 for 35 million would do it, with maybe an option on the last year for both parties.
I agree with Steady...think he will bring the kind of players that we want on Long Island...gotta sign him...as long as Yashin is gone I'm happy either way.
I received a signed Islander Jersey today for signing up early for next years season tickets.
If there was any signed Jersey you would want for this season who would it be?
TD,
Who was yours signed by?
I would want a signed Simon stick! LOL...
Honestly...DP he is after all USA's Goalie! Other then that maybe Blake because the season he had.
I would want a Simon stick. Just b/c I would lie when everyone came in my sports basement and tell them it was the stick he hit Hollwig with. LOL
LMFAO...
Me too
Personally, I think I got the best Jersey which sums up this season.
DUBIE!!!!
The Smyth offer from the Oilers (according to the media here) was for 27 million over 5 years (5.4 per year).
Oh and Cincy is right. The westerners think that's too much for him.
Mookie, I think you are right. The Ducks are bigger and stronger than the Canucks. The Canucks tried to beat them on effort. But the Ducks just let them tire out and then take over the game in third.
If the Canucks don't do it, I think we might have the word Duck on the Stanely Cup.
Oh Well, the word Devil is already on it, so how much worse can it get.
BTW, when they have a goal review in MSG they put on the song "I get by with a little help from my friends" over the PA.
Kevin T.
Were you asking if they do Kevin?
That is a good one though.
DiPIETRO NEWS:
http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/islanders/ny-spdipi0504,0,4665976.story?coll=ny-sports-headlines
NHL needed to help the Rangers keep this series going at least 6 games. They need game 6 on NBC sunday.
NO GOAL !!!
The fact DP played the way he did with post concussion syndrome and a tear in his hip, shows how special this kid really is....Not to mention plays the game with such a competitive outlook.
Get well soon DP....Not you Mookie . lol
I know Smytty already realizes that DP is a warrior... but this has got to re-emphasize that point. From what I now understand about Smyth, I think he would want to play in front of this 26 year old warrior of a netminder who is locked in at 4.5 million for the next 14 years.
Always good to look at the bright side of surgery. LOL.
RFS,
Yes they also need the Rangers in the Finals too...
Here we go school is out and the good kids that finished their homework can play on the internet for a while.
Steady,
I was thinking that if they made it past Buffalo he would still be playing. Yet he had to get surgery. That is what I love about the sport and the guys that play it. Never can blame DP for not having a heart! Thats for sure!
Mookie, sorry about that. Missing a word and it screwed up the joke.
When they have a goal review in MSG they SHOULD put on the song "I get by with a little help from my friends" over the PA.
Anyway, my fellow Isles fans, 7th inning stretch time...
GO CANUCKS GO.
everyone, all together now...
GO CANUCKS GO.
No? How about the Wave! I'll start...
1 - 2 - 3 - WAAAAVE!!!
Still No? Oh Well.
awe screw it!
Kevin T.
Nice Goal.
1-1
Canucks are out. 2nd OT. Luongo played great, but took started looking for the Ref when he should have been watching the puck.
Watch out. The Ducks are coming. Next Western Series should be great hockey.
Kevin T.
Kevin T.
Will be a big learning experience for Luongo...He won't do that again.
Got to always play the game and not worry about the Refs.
Although it did look like Nedermeyer either interfered with him or elbowed him. I think the Refs missed one there...but you gotta stay in the play.
He played great...Canucks will improve next year.
that hit on hansen was a clear cheap shot. kinda like how brenden witt plays defense, CHEAP AND DIRTY!!
TJ,
When your team wins 19 straight playoff series and 4 straight cups then maybe we can take what you right serious...we generally ignore posts like that...but feel free to come back to the site on Tuesday night after Game 7 to talk some more playoff hockey. I look forward to it.
yea, there is some real hockey on, its on tomorrow tho. maybe u islander people should watch the rangers with jealousy, so u can see wat a REAL hockey team does...buh-bye for now :D
wow TD, u still living in the past eh?...that was so long ago, keep hangin on to those memories..maybe billy smith can come back, he has to be better than DP.
We're certainly jealous of the Buffalo Sabres organization, they have some serious young talent...but the Rangers?
Come on...are you serious? What would we be jealous of on that team? If your entire team were UFA's this year I wouldn't want one player...and I'm very happy with our netminder, as well.
TJ,
The past is something you Ranger fans always have to forget...you have none.
I guess I should forget about the '69 Mets and the '86 Mets also. Yeah...ok.
keep watchin the mets, your hockey team will too.
Great blog! Thanks for making the season much more funnier.
Greetings from Slovakia. I'll keep you guys updated if there are any news about Miro or Zednik...
Have a great summer!
Piero
tj~
Congrats...You have taken first place for the MOST PATHETIC post I have ever read. I pray for your sake that you cut and pasted that, b/c if you took the time to write that you are our new VITO JR. Then again I will make you SR. b/c cj will always be jr. Both write very similar though and both of you have a lot of time on your hands...Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm????
TD,
Ouch man. Some of those comments stung a bit. You wouldn't take one Ranger? lol...I find that hard to believe.
TJ's post couldn't tell you more about the man (or kid) that wrote it. Vito Jr. is my hero compared to this guy!
Going to be a long day. Knot in my throat, tightness in my chest and my stomach is spinning! GOD DROP THE DAMN PUCK ALREADY!
Kevin T,
Sorry man. The Canucks did give it a hell of a run this year and had a great season. The joke, I got it and laughed.
Just ignore TJ. He posted the same thing on Zipay's blog and was torn apart for it.
TD, you wouldn't take one Ranger? No young talent? Don't make me start a list. I'll ignore that ridiculous comment as well.
DP (Mookie). I'm not all that nervous. For at least tonight, all the pressure is on the Sabres. They HAVE to win. Don't get me wrong, I want a win tongiht in the worst way, but the Buffalo boys are feeling the pressure. If we can withstand the first ten minutes, heck, even put one on the board, they are going to turn their sticks into sawdust. But, the first ten mintutes will be hell.
Kevin T. Sorry about the Canucks, I was pulling for them. One question for you. About a week ago, when the Rangers were down 2-0, you questioned their, specifically Jags', heart. Any further comments now?
Mookie and John,
I'm not picking a fight with you...but who would the Islanders take from the Rangers over:
Smyth
Drury
Briere
Gomez
Selanne
Kariya
These guys are all available.
I just don't think the Rangers have any players in this caliber.
As you can see...not a big Jagr fan...and that was way before he was a Ranger, so you can't hold that against me.
More importantly you have a good team but no players that interest me for my team...All teams have different styles.
I was surprised to see Luongo look to the ref and take his eyes off the play. His concentration is generally unshakeable. About three years ago I was down in Fla. and went to see the Islanders play the Panthers. One thing I noticed that you miss when you see him on TV is that, from the moment the Isles got the puck in their own zone, he was in his set position, moving back and forth and following the play.
Speaking of goalies, does anyone else think Brodeur is playing hurt? Letting in a lot of softies. Also makes me wonder if Julien was fired for wanting Brodeur to rest an injury instead of going for the most wins in a season record. That's probably a bit of a stretch, though.
And yeah, as much as he sometimes seems whiny when he complains to the refs, DP definitely showed his toughness down the stretch this year. Great job stepping up and playing well after getting a giant contract - you hardly ever see that, especially for us Islanders/Mets fans!
John,
I hear you loud and clear. We just need to play the way we have all series and let the Sabres do the adjusting. Need the first goal early tonight!
TD,
I was just busting on you. I can hear what you are saying. This off season will be interesting for both teams I think. I really think that the Rangers will be grabbing one of the guys that you listed. The Islanders as well. I think Buffalo is setting the tone here for the NHL. Proving that although you do need some grit and team toughness the fourth line of nothing but, checkers and a goon is becoming a thing of the past. Although, in our division I think you are still going to need at least one enforce that you can dress occasionally. For games like Rangers/Isles or Philly or Devils.
Mookie,
You don't have to remind me that the Rangers will sign one of the above. LOL.
I left it out of my post for a reason. Rangers Suck! LOL
Another reason why we must sign Smyth.
I also left out some defenseman that are available... This is one year where it is great to have a lot of UFA's...which we do...all the more reason why we have to dump Yashin and maybe trade Miro for some draft picks...and I do like Miro, but if we can get some picks and free up 4.5 million off the cap and sign Smyth...then it has to be done.
Mookie,
Hollweg vs. Simon
They drop the gloves the first game they play next year? That should be interesting.
TD, now I get your comment. I was unaware you were comparing them to a specific list of UFAs.
To answer your question. Even though the Rangers just signed Hollweg to a new 2 year contract, I wouldn't be suprised if he wasn't with them next year. I like him as a grinder but the Rangers have some other young guys (Dubinsky, Dawes, Bouette, etc.) who may get a shot in his place.
Kudos to DP for playing hurt. The guy has a ton of heart. Question, is this the type of injury that may linger even after the surgery or is it considered "fixed"?
TD,
Glad to see you still love the Rangers! lol...time will tell.
As for the fight. Don't see it happening with the history. If it does I say Hollweg gets knocked the F out!
John,
I was just saying the other day that the players that got signed a few weeks ago had more than meets the eye. I see Hollweg and other getting dealt in the off season for sure. The guys that still need their contracts signed, they will be safe and that is why they will get done after the season ends. Yes I like the team we have but, improvements need to be made to keep making progress.
I also wouldn't take Jagr because as well as he has been playing (I've been impressed), there is a chance the change of teams would deflate him again and turn him into a Yashin. Remember when he started with the Rangers he was pretty invisible. Kudos to Renney if it was him who got Jagr going again. I also would take Nylander just because his name is so close to NY Islander (and he's also pretty good). Dan Girardi has been impressing me although we already have a crop of up and coming young defensemen.
I agree with Mookie on the camera thing...if they had the technology why not begin using it for the whole playoffs? The cost too great?
OK, I will start by saying that Jagr is a Very touchy player that plays 100% when Jagr feels like it. We have all seen what this guy can do (Penguins/Rangers)when he is happy and enjoying the game and himself. Also when he is not (Washington).
But, I don't get how people can say like "Remember when he started with the Rangers he was pretty invisible."
Take a look at his stats and tell me when this guy has been invisible in a Rangers Jersey...
03-04: Year traded to NYR
31 Games
15 Goals
14 Assists
29 points
-1
05-06
82 Games
54 Goals
69 Assists
123 Points
+ 34
First time Rangers make the playoffs in how long? Why do they make it there? Because Jagr carried the team!
06-07
82 Games
30 Goals
66 Assists
96 Points
+ 26
Now if you look at the rest of the Stats you will get more of the story.
Healy,
I am not coming at you. I am just putting it out there. I have heard similar alot lately and it puzzles me. The guy has been nothing short of a horse his whole stay in NY.
They probably did decide to chintz on the cameras, but one wonders what the decision not to put them in cost in both tangibles (PR guys to spin the controversies) and intangibles (pissing away the league's credibility).
I doubt Simon'll be anxious to reopen the controversy, assuming he signs on again with the team. Nothing would throw more publicity on it like "Simon Puts Hollweg in the Hospital", the likely occurrence.
Ryan,
I would tend to agree...this is the "New NHL" and who even knows if it is worth having Simon after this type of media coverage...they'll never let it go and for a player like him it will be like they took his balls from him...look what happened to Bertuzzi...one chippy play and he's in the box.
Might not be worth keeping Simon...which is a shame...he's replaceable, but you have to feel for the guy.
As for Jagr...stats never the issue...it was a character thing..but he is certainly a differnt player now...I believe he realizes that he is running out of opportunites and he is playing a more desperate hockey and not dogging it.
Hard to say, because we don't know him personally and Eastern Europeans are very difficult to read...but you have to give him credit for the way he playing...am I still allowed to say I don't want him on my team? LOL
TD,
Yea you can say it...believe me I know what you mean. I just don't get people questioning what he has done as a Ranger. Especially the year he had last year. The Jagr that is playing now, hasn't been seen since he won the cup in Pitts.
Rumor is that he is done after his stint with the Rangers. Which according to his contract is two more seasons.
Mookie, I believe it may be a combination of the hold over opinion from his time in Washington, his shorter stint with the Rangers in that first year (not to mention the hype that surrounded it), and where the team finished. I've always had a feeling that his first year with the Rangers he took a lot of shifts off and didn't play with the passion you see now but his numbers are still good that first year. Though they aren't quite as impressive as now, he certainly can't be termed "invisble", my mistake on that.
My position is still the same though, unless Ted Nolan can keep him ignited and he falls in love with the Island, I think he would be a bust. In any case he will probably be on the Rangers for quite some time.
Actually I am kind of afraid that if we do keep Smyth that it might mirror the Jagr in Washington deal. I mean no disrespect to Smyth or his fans but the culture in the Colesium has not been one of winning/competing for quite some time. I feel like we took some steps in the '02 playoffs but got a little side tracked in the three seasons after. This year the attitude has been a lot better and a stronger culture of winning has been built but the peaks and valleys we saw in effort shows that we are not quite there. If he does stay I hope he influences the environment and not the other way around. From everything I hear about him and what little I saw it seems like the former but I am tentative.
(As you can tell I've been burnt pretty bad by the past decade or so)
Jagr definitely played like he cared in Game 3, the only one I've watched in this series. That was the first time I've seen him play like he gave a damn all season, though; in four games at the Coliseum, I remember him only as not very memorable. Did he post a single goal against the Isles this year?
My friend ran into an NHL TV analyst today (he told me who, but I don't want to get anyone in trouble). This person said as of two days ago, it's looking extremely likely the Isles sign Smyth. Not sure his basis, but he seemed relatively confident. He then said that if they sign Smyth, Blake will follow (although that was just an opinion). He mentioned the complication with a Yashin buyout is that Wang and Yashin are close tennis buddies, but if push comes to shove Wang will side with Nolan if he's insistent. Take it for what it's worth...
303, why play with our fragile minds?
Again, take it as you will. I can't guarantee there's much to it, but everything I relayed is straight from someone with some insider knowledge. I really hope he knows what he's talking about.
4 John:
"About a week ago, when the Rangers were down 2-0, you questioned their, specifically Jags', heart. Any further comments now?"
I did have two futher posts regarding Yagr after that. One I stated that I was speaking of Yagr has been a tempermental in the past. The second I commented on the game the other night when Yagr came back defensely.
Last night the Canucks were beaten up and tired. Who kept on going when things were dire? Not too many.
If things tank for the Rangers will Yagr push it until the end? The old Yagr, a definate NO.
Kevin T.
yes, i copied and pasted. also did 1 pargraph or so at a time. i was just tweeking the islander fans, looks like it worked. the childish and pathetic insults are great comebacks btw. its called comedy, so if ur gonna insult it, say it isnt funny. but that seems tough to do, cuz even islander fans have to admit, that was funny.
Were someone delivering it as a monologue, their presentation may have been funny. The writing, though, wasn't even slightly humorous. It displayed no sense of wit, didn't create a sense of the ironic or ridiculous, and wasn't even shocking enough, for all its crudity, to become humorous. It relied on knee-jerk homophobia and very tired cliche to make a relatively dumb point.
I'd feel the same if you'd posted the same joke with the names Nylander, Jagr, Avery, Lundqvist and Renney instead. It really just lacked any sense of class.
I have nothing against young people. I'm pretty young myself. Anyone that finds that bit of gibberish humorous enough to actually re-post, though, is a schmuck.
Thank you to Newsday for removing the offending post, offensive not for its crudity or its attacks on the Islanders, but its basic lack of intelligence.
OK, My post game report:
That penalty on Betts that lead to the Power Play was weak. The refs screwed us. The NHL wants Buffalo to win! Jesus....
LMAO! OK. back to reality. Because you know thats not me. Although the call was a bit weak. SO BE IT! If it wasn't for Lundqvist this game was over mid 2nd period. I am disgusted to say what I just watched was Rangers hockey. Horrible, Shameful, disgusting and the list goes on!
Hats off to Drury and the Sabres they deserved that game alot earlier than OT. 7.7 seconds stings like hell. But, so does icing the puck at that point in the game to. You can only get away with it so many times. See end of game 4.
Sad to say that it is going to take a miracle for the Rangers to take this one. I feel there will be a game 7 and maybe, just maybe my boys will surprise me. I am not giving up on my team, not until the Fat Lady sings!
Glad that I will get to be at game 6 on Sunday.
a. to either cheer the boys for a great season and a job well done
b. to cheer my butt off that we are going to game 7 with one more shot to get it right in Buffalo.
Off to watch the Mets. Go to see someone win before I go to bed!
So i'm just reading a rumor from the oiler message boards and i can't stress this enough but it is ONLY A RUMOR as of now but its saying that Smyth has either agreed on a deal to stay on the island or has been offered a deal (not sure yet) for 8 years at 40 mil. I love the guy and think it would be awsome if we could keep him here but for 8 years seems too long to me.. Let me know if anyone else has heard about this...thanks
Where are all the rags fans now.... hahahahahahahahaha
My bad... you guys got screwed by the the refs tonight... its cool... you just got a little taste of what we've been eating for a while now. A few of you were quick to point fingers and call us out on it.... mookie is the man and took it exteremly well in my opinion
Agree on the Mookie Post.
Don't agree that the Refs screwed them...Rangers had a 7-6 advantage, plus they had a B.S. call on Drury and had their chance in the OT first.
Jagr was very impressive tonight..looks like he was double shifted.
If he had his hands of 10 years ago, he would have closed out this game...but that's what goes first with a hockey player...not the legs and speed...the hands.
He just doesn't have the snap and pop in his shot when he really needs it...but I was very impressed with his effort.
Lundqvist was Brodeur-like tonight, that's fer sher.
Great hockey game...I'm sure they have the heat on in the Theater downstairs...this series is going 7.
TSN was all over Yagr in their broadcast. They showed him taking 15 seconds to get from blue line to blue line to back-check. I think Rangers will take the next game. Home ice seems to make a big difference to this team.
Lundquist is a lot better than I thought, he kept them in the game. He's a young goalie too, so Rangers should have something to build on for several years. I expect a lot of DP vs. Lundquist in the future. Should be fun!
Kevin T.
For Stan Fishler to say that they should have called a penalty on Zubrus with 17 seconds to go, just shows what kind of a Homer he is.
I don't even know what he is referring to...both players were off the puck and both went down.
For a journlist to make that kind of statement it's disgraceful.
I thought the refs called a very good game..including the interference call. They don't call enough of that usually.
Reffing these type of games is very tough...and as far as the Betts penalty...you can't tug on a player with your stick especially when he is taking a shot...which is exactly what happened...Drury did the same thing in the neutral zone and they called it, so when a player is taking a shot...you are screwed.
Game could have went either way..nothing to be ashamed of...you win Game 6 and you have momentum.
I agree TD. I thought this was one of the best ref'd games in the playoffs. Certainly better than what we got in the Western Conference.
Luongo was definitely interfered with in Game 5...should have called interefernce. He was clearly shoved into the net by the Ducks.
Mookster~
Tough loss. I warned you about Drury....Guy is plain and simply BLESSED. Won the little league world series, hobie baker winner, won the Frozen Four with B.U, won the cup, and gets a big goal EVERY TIME HE PLAYS...
Not over yet...Take them to a game seven and the momentum will swing right back. The funniest part of all of this is now the Ranger Fans actually agree with us about the calls. Now you know why I lost my mind against these guys.
NHL is still paying them back for the overtime goal when the Stars were in the crease. lol
Go Mets.
I honestly forgot to type the same you guys are saying. Probably the best job by the refs i have seen these playoffs as well.
Just for the fun of it. Drury, his stick was in there and tugged Straka. Betts got the usual stick is level with the ice. He smacked his hands.
But, like I said. I am not going to point to that at all.
One thing I will say and I have said it bofore. Put the whistles in your pocket in OT of the playoffs. Remember when you had to almost draw blood to get a whistle in OT of the playoffs?
2 penalties in the first 3 minutes of OT in my opinion is just not good for the game.
some rumors floating around Edmonton on Smyth. CTV: Smyth rejects Islanders offer for 7 years, 41 million http://forums.edmontonoilers.com/index.php?showtopic=30612
TD,
You are dead on with Fischler as well.
I have gotten quite sick of his old wrinkly a**. During the post game show I yelled SHUT THE PUCK UP! at the TV screen. He took it worse then any Ranger player interviewed last night. I was expecting him to start crying.
I do expect the Rangers to play alot better and more hungry tomorrow. You know, like they should have played last night. I am not taking away from the Sabres at all but, the Rangers looked Dazed and Confused last night.
Really thought the game was in the bag. I was thinking win Sunday and this is over.
7.7 DAMN SECONDS!
I know that one will be one of you guys favorites in arguing with Rangers fans for some time to come! lol
I am just amazed at how many less-than-a-minute-to-go-buzzer-beating-controversial goals I have seen this season and the playoffs. I don't remember this much from previous years. All the more reason to re-examine and refine the video-officiating tandem. Bravo to the teams that work to make it happen. I must say it is quite a roller coaster ride for the fans.
Ok - here's my two bits. There's been a few rumours swirling around here in Edm about Islanders offering 8 years, 40 million, 7 years 41 million - but nothing has been substantiated. You would think that something like that would hit the New York news first, but I don't know that area. Anyways, I think I've been on this blog often enough (kind of boring on ours right now!) for you guys to understand how most Oiler fans feel about Smyth - we love him even though he claims to have wanted to be an Oiler his whole career, but turns down a great offer. I know - we Oiler fans can't be accused of being the sharpest knives in the block!! But since Smytty was here for so long, we also claim to have good knowledge into the kind of guy he is - we have lots of good things to say about him, but not many people around here call Smyth a "sharp knife" either. But unless he's an absolute idiot, I can't imagine him agreeing to any deal before July 1. I would predict (and this is based on "inside information" I get from reading this blog) that Wang would up any offer he gets after July 1 to keep him. Let me know if I'm wrong in this assumption. He seems to be the "crazy offer" guy. If that is then general consensus, then Smyth probably knows this too (or his agent), so why take a deal early, even if he wants to stay with the Islanders.
For those of you reading the Oilers message boards, you can see that the jury is mixed on his return here. Those who still want him, mostly admit that this is not likely to happen. But lots of fans think that now that he's gone, maybe it's time to head in a new direction. Lets face it - the Oilers weren't exactly ripping up the conference when Smyth was here. But now we've got money room that we didn't before. And Kevin Lowe is not a "crazy offer" guy. I'm sure we'll be seeing more rumours like this, but I would be very surprised if any of them came to be true before July 1.
I would love to keep Smyth and Blake and buy out Yashin, but I think the most pressing need is a top 2 defenseman. Granted, MAB, Campoli, Meyer, Gervais and Martinek are young but I don't see either of them as a top 2 d-man (maybe Martinek but he has been injury prone) in the near future at least. Signing guys like Witt and Hill was great but they are not quick enough to get back into position and take way too many minor penalties because the forwards they are defending against are quicker. Remember back in 2001-2002, we had a great year because Hamrlik, Aucoin and Jonsson were great for us and Osgood surprised a lot of people and Yashin and Peca did what they were supposed to do. But it all started with the D. Look at the Rangers this year, they were horrible for the first half then they really focused on their defensive game ever since February and have been playing good hockey. With DP here for the next 14 years, it's important that we build our D.
Rangers in 7!!!!!!!
Who let Gary out of his cave?
Great third period coming up in Detroit. Getting nasty on the ice....LOVE IT!
I love how Chico says that Broduer just couldn't find the magic...I mean give me a break...the Devils couldn't score all series...could they have given him more than a 1 goal lead once in awhile.
Silly to look at Brodeur as the issue in this series..
Now Fischler says...Brodeur blows it...he's and idiot.
Gotta get rid of Fischler. I just can't handle his stupidity.
Is it possible that the Devils over emphasis on defense is their problem in the New NHL...how about scoring goals for Marty instead of worrying about defense all the time.
Can't stand watching the Devils...maybe they'll change their boring ways..Their own fans can't stand watching them.
Here's to Gomez wearing and Islander uniform next year!!!
Why not us? LOL
As for what the Isles need. The most important player on an NHL team is not the goalie, it's the D. If I had a team I would put my money in the D, a good young goalie, and bunch of youg speedster forwards mixed in with some experienced verterans.
You look at the strategy of a winning coach in the NHL and it is to wear down the D. Once the D is worn-out, burnt-out, or out with injury, its Game/Series over. No matter how good the Goalie is and no matter how much the forwards come back and help.
The reason DP is so valuable is because he plays like a 3rd Defenseman.
My prediction for the Stanley Cup Finals, Ducks against Ottawa. Ducks will try to wear down Ottawa, but it won't work. Ottawa wins in six.
You heard it here first!
Kevin T.
Love to give you credit Kevin T, but I along with others predicted Ottawa before the playoffs started. They are LOADED!
Scary thing is them and the Penguins are going to be loaded for years and years to come.....Scary!
I agree Steady. Picking Ottawa is no biggie. And at this late in the playoffs, my odds are good anyway. I wanted to point out that the Ducks are a contender.
In todays game, Rangers vs. Buffalo, my eye brows have been raised about the reffing. That penalty that caused the 4th goal was a joke. The Buffalo player elbows the Ranger in the head. The Ranger play falls down. Ranger penalty, what else.
Kevin T.
What about the penalty just prior which led to the Ranger 2nd goal...Briere didn't trip Straka...Straka was exhausted trying to get off the ice.
Bottom line is the ice is decent today and the Sabres can play their game and the Rangers seemed to have gone off of their defensive game.
Good series...but glad it's over looking forward to Sabres vs. Ottawa anyway. Should be very interesting to see them go at it.
Drink heavily Mookie, that is what I did. LOL Played them tough.
CJ~ again wrong. to bad
Gary ~ Get back in your cage. to bad
John ~ Drink heavily like I did. You and Mookie are the only Rangers fans I have ever liked. Keep your head high. Team played well.
Ottawa ~ Buffalo is going to be one for the ages! Look forward to it!
Bottom Line:
Avery no points = no factor in this series. Received more penalties then he caused.
If Shanny retires this guy will have no leash and less discipline. Watch!
predictions:
Ottawa over Buffalo in 7
CJ .... has a row of books fall on him in the library.
Gary....Never posts again
Clemens hurts his arm in 2nd start. Leave it to George Steinbrenner to steal the back pages yet again!
Echo echo echo echo...Bueller? Bueller?...Anyone? Anyone? Voo Doo Economics. Anyone?
FORE!!!
If you are reading this things have taken a terrible turn in life. I can't go on living. I am headed back to the city to find a tall building...
lol...To get on top and scream LETS GO RANGERS!!!
What a year and what a series. The Rangers lost this series the other night in game five. That felt worse then sitting in the Garden yesterday. Actually, they lost it earlier. Say, game 2 when they could have one and needed to steel one early in Buffalo. I feel that Lundqvist could have and should have stopped at least two of those goals yesterday. Then were are playing game 7 tomorrow.
No use crying over spilled milk. What a year and another round further. As for you guys with the Islanders we now get to play the guessing game of who signs, who don't, who gets traded and do we get Gomez, Drury/Briere?
What a roller coaster ride!
Shanny stays Steady, so does Avery. So we will get to see what Avery can do with a full year in NY.
You were right as well as the person that told me before the series started. Avery was ineffective. But, that is not the reason this series was lost.
So the Jersey gets hung up, the hat goes away, the ratty t-shirts I wore all season go in the garbage and the Mets Gear comes out.
Knew they were signing Clemens. Has got be getting some ridiculous cash to leave that set up he had going with the Astros.
It's OK though the Yankees time has come and gone. It's Mets in NY!
I think if he plays another year, Shanny will definitely stay with the Rangers...That is a big IF though. What more does the guy need to accomplish? That head injury will be the swing vote to retire in my opinion.
Let the guessing game begin.....Who will sign where? Who will stay, who will go?
p.s If you read the POST article on Shanny it sounds as if he is making peace with leaving, feeling the franchise has turned around and his work is done. Who knows?
What impressed me about Avery's play was his head for the breakaway, especially on the penalty kill. During almost every kill I saw him on, he managed to eat up 15, 20 extra seconds by dipsy-dooing into the Sabres zone.
Congrats to the Rangers - they played a tough series. Good run Mookie. I think Shanny will be back. If the youth on your team and in Hatford is at least half as good as some on the Rangers blog are saying the future looks pretty bright.
I read this morning that Rangers want to sign Lunqvist for 7 years at 42 million. Probably a good move. But I saw a chink in the armor yesterday. Watch for everyone next year to be shooting high glove side. Not that he'll let huge numbers in, but Henrik can be rattled. He was yesterday. I agree with Mookie - he should've stopped at least 2 of those shots.
Anyway, with hockey finished in the big apple I'm hoping to hear some buyout news real soon.
Steady,
I here what you are saying but, at the same point. All those articles to me are just fluff pieces for the paper. The guy moved his family here this year. Could have stayed in Detroit but, came to NYC because it was some where he wanted to play before his career ended. The guy is a leader and In my opinion, will be back and handed the 'C' by Jagr (take notes Yashin)...lol
The Rangers have alot to look forward to in Hartford. No next Crosby but, alot of pieces that will fit little by little in the next few years.
Henrik needs to work on the top right catching glove. It is his biggest weakness and that has shown a few times this season but, stuck out huge yesterday!
Henrik stays, I look for Montoya to be with the team next year. I would also start the season with the two of them dueling for the start each night. Obviously, Lundqvist is your number one. But, healthy competition to win each night and keep your spot for the next game would be great.
WHO, WHAT, WHEN and WHY!
Can't wait for the Cup to be handed out so the off season games can begin.
I'm looking forward to this Ottawa - Buffalo series.
As far as the Rangers are concerned..it was good theater...Sabres the far better team..no matter what Jagr says.
Love how Jagr blamed it on rookie mistakes...how about his mistake for not covering Connolly on the point with 17 seconds left...can't leave the point man open like that...I guess they shouldn't have iced the puck to leave his offensive only ability on the ice.
Listen, he played as good as I have ever seen him play...he played with heart...but his comments after the game, were arrogant and he acted like a sore loser.
We undestand you are running out of opportunities, but just go ask the Washington fans if they give a crap...since they foot the bill for half your lazy ass salary...Where were you in Washington?
More of the same for Jaromir "no hands left" Jagr for the next 2 years...get used to it Ranger Fans.
Just pisses me off to hear comments like that after the series. Give the other team some credit.
No offense Mookie...not looking for an argument...but it gets me upset.
Sabres one of the best and most fun teams I've seen in a long time.
I think they beat Ottawa in 7 games...if they get to Emery like I know they can...they'll beat them in 5...if they can't stop the Big Three on the Power Play and they don't score on their Power Play, they will lose in 5/6 games.
TD,
Have at it man...The way I see it is you lose game 6. These guys are alot more upset in their locker room then us fans are driving home or watching at home. I think what he said any captain of a team that gave his all like Jagr did would say the same.
Not taking away from buffalo. They are a far more talented team then the Rangers are. Better, depends on how you play. What you give it. Do you give it your all or leave some in the Locker room where it means jack s*it?
I agree with Shanny. They lost this series before last night. Game two, they could have won. Game five they should have won. Right there series ends differently.
This is Should, Could and Would. The fact that you can say them means your not playing in the next round.
Get what I mean?
I understand what you're saying...but once it's over it's over...that's why we shake hands, in hockey, at the end.
I'm from the world of giving credit to the other team...the series came down to alot of little things...but it certainly wasn't the refs, or the coaches...it came down to the players coming through when they needed to.
It's tough losing on home ice but it's over. I think Henrik was far more gracious then Jagr...that's all I'm saying.
TD,
"Have at it..."
Meant exactly that. I agree with you and hear what your saying. I also like hearing your opinions.
I didn't get the "Have at it"
Though it was a typo.
Hey Mookie - do you know the facts about Jagr's contract? I see where he's making 8+ million per year, but the Rangers cap hit is only 4+ million. I've heard that the Caps are paying half his salary, but I don't see it appearing as a cap hit for them. Can you clear up the mystery for me?
Cracks me up.
There is more Ranger hockey talk here than at the Rangers blog.
And I am loving every second of reading NY Hockey being discussed the way it is supposed to be.
It is too bad there is no NY based radio show that has this.
SO...as much as I disagree with the Ranger fans posting here.....Thank you for the great debate and conversation.
Block - hockey is hockey. I don't care what team anyone roots for. Got something even remotely intellegent to say? I'll read it. I'm certainly no Ranger fan, but I'm always willing to read what Mookie, John and other Ranger fans have to say about their team.
I'd love to hear this stuff on the radio too!!! Instead all we have are the hockey ignorant Mike and the Maddog.
Hey folks-
To get an idea of how good Buffalo is, nobody thinks they've played their best hockey the last two series and they seemed very beatable, yet they're are 8-3!
The upcoming series with Ottawa promises to give the best in talent, speed, and even combativeness that the Eastern Conference has to offer. I'm looking forward to it.
As for the Isles, I let them keep my money for next season--and I got the Chris Simon autographed jersey! TD, can we trade?
Cincy,
You have to get XM Radio...Hockey Home Ice Channel 204 is awesome.
4-6PM In the Slot with Tatti and Esposito is fantastic.
Hockey talk 24/7
I've been on In the Slot 5 times already...did some Yashin Bashin.
They had the Islanders Assistand Coach on last week.
You'll never listen to WFAN again.
Merrick,
I guess I lucked out. I thought they'd have Dubie sign all 7,500. LOL.
I'd send the Jersey to Hollweg, to remind him of the only thing anyone will ever remember him for this season.
Personally, I hope we don't keep Simon...will be too much of a distraction...but I think we ultimately will keep him.
We need an enforcer in our conference with Philly having their tough guys, Rags having Orr, etc. etc. I like Simon. I think a lot of teams will take penalties trying to get him to do stupid things next year.
Smitty never shook hands after a game. Straight to the Bud cans. When asked why, he said he did not want to shake the hand of a man trying to take money out of his pocket. BEST MONEY GOALIE EVER !!!
Good to hear from you Merrick.
Cincy ~
How good is Graeters Ice Cream? My God....Best thing I ever tried while in Cinn. meeting a client. That and their chilli aint to shabby. lol
Check this out. Too funny:
http://eod.liquidviewer.com/wgr-od/wgr/20070507_ottawa.wma
TD,
Have at it..as in speak your mind. Don't worry about offending me. Not a typo.
XM Home Ice Channel is the best thing they got. I am actually more hooked on that then O&A.
Cincy,
Good point and I never noticed that. Jagrs contract was for 11 Mil a year when he was traded to the Rangers. With Washington to pay 4 Mil. He came here for the last part of the season with that agreement.
Then the lockout happens and his max because of cap was 7.8 Mil. With I guess Washington still responsible for 4 Mil. I do remember talk that since the CBA was done after the deal. Washington got a one time only reprieve from Jagrs salary affecting their cap.
TD,
Was good...
Buffalo fan with too much time?
Steady - Graeters is pretty good. I grew up on Carvel, so I'm pretty easy to please. You liked the chili? Did you have Skyline or Gold Star? No difference to me. They both SUCK. It's lust spaghetti and meat sauce - real runny. I heard they cook the meat right in the sauce - all fat included. I had it once. ONCE.
Next time you're in town go to the Mongomery Inn boathouse (on the river) and get a slab of ribs. Trust me on this one. I'm from New York. I know NY has the best food in the world. The Boathouse has the best ribs anywhere.
Mookie,
I believe it was the radio station..but man is that funny.
NY's only teamNYR,
It must hurt really bad to lose on home ice for you to post something like that.
Bashing on the Islanders when your team just lost just goes to show that you are a loser.
Take the loss in stride...maybe you'd be a better person for it, instead of a jerk.
Every dog has his day...yours was when we lost and ours was when you lost.
To debate who played Buffalo harder is non-sensical.
I was very happy with the way we played Buffalo...we won a game on their ice (did you?) and got some pretty shaky calls go against us at home.
But no worries...we got beat by the better team, we had our chances...we were in every game going into the third period.
I'd like that bet by the way...Islanders behind the Rangers by 15 points next season.
WOW! So much feedback here!
I hope you update re: your blogging future, as I have been enjoying your column. It helps me to keep tabs on what you are covering so I can ask appropriate questions at the next family gathering. Regards to all, enjoy your summer!
Good article on Isles prospects at http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=303172
NY's ONly Blah Blah~
I have not read one negative comment on this blog about your team by any of our posters unless first annoyed by ignorant people such as yourself. You still crying b/c your wonder goalie got lit up like a lamp? Exposed his weak glove hand? Wahhhh Wahhhhhhh. As for next year....Calm down there wee one. Take a big breath. Jagr and his bad hips and back will be yet another year older, Shanny will retire, and Avery has been exposed for what he is....another pest that when annoyed does NOTHING! I believe the words you wrote to us were: "Enjoy Golf?" Well the Tee Box is yours my friend and I guarantee you play for the reds! Tah Tah
Cincy: Actually like the Chilli for some reason. The ice cream is beyond good though. I have had those ribs and they are TOP NOTCH! I am playing at a great golf course there in June. Third oldest in the country I believe! Will get you the name as it has escaped me.
To the Isles regulars here, thanks for the kind words about the Rangers. They gave it all they had and pushed the Sabres to the brink. If only Isbister had gotten his stick on the pass from Drury to Connolly or if Jags had stayed closer to the point I think we'd be moving on to the Sens. In no way did we deserve to win game 5 but we should have. The King put it on a silver platter and the boys let him down. If only, if only, if only. Anyway, good season and I REALLY look forward to September and training camps.
Steady, I've got one issue with your comments. I wouldn't say Henrik got lit up like a lamp and exposed. I'm assuming you're just using that to taunt the idiotic Rangers fans on here looking for a fight?
The King was the reason that the Rangers were able to push the Sabres as far as they did. I'm sure you watched the entire series. They rarely beat him on a clean shot. 4 of the five goals yesterday were deflected in off someone. I would say 90% of goals scored off of him in the playoffs went in the same way. As a Rangers fan I'll take him for the next 12 years and run to the bank.
Exposed? Yea, he got beat over the glove a couple of times. But that's been the word on him since he started last year and I think he's done pretty well (2 time Vezina finalist in his first two years, Olympic gold).
Anyway, DP (Mookie), Jim in Woodbury, Steady, Cincy, Merrick, Kevin T, Matt (although he's been MIA), JP and everyone else, I hope you guys enjoy the summer. I look forward to the offseason moves and I hope all continue posting here throughout.
i hate to say this friends, but im jumping ship. dont be angry at me, but i realize its hopeless for the islanders. some times you need something to hit you in the face, and it has....been fun, talk soon.
all the railing of ranger players by isle fans..if u had half of a captain that jagr is, youd be in decent shape. yashin (7 mill plus a year, that was glued to the bench in the playoffs on the 4th line. who has no idea wat commitment is, who was traded to u, for basically the whole farm)..so plz, dont pick on our captain, seein that urs is the laughing stock of the leauge. at least ours showed up in the playoffs. avery is a better player to pick on. even tho, brenden witt is the same player as him, only with less skills. keep on talking here isle goofs. we love to defend NEW YORK'S ONLY TEAM THAT MATTERS.
KEEP OUT OF OUR BLOG!!..your insults fall on deaf ears, put a name to ur posts too plz!!
Posted by: tj (rangerville) | May 7, 2007 05:35 PM
wat TD?..i assume thats an imposter..anyway, i told you i respect your hockey knowledge and honesty..and would stay away from here(dunno know if u saw the post). plz tell ur cronies to keep here and we'll keep there. were knowledgable aswell, could make for some good chatter back and forth. but isles fans invade our spot with bs, so it never ends. i apologized for my rant already, maybe it went on deaf ears too...but watever, were all passionate hockey fans which is good to see.
Imposter TD,
Yeah right...that sounds like me.
John,
The King is really a Queen in Drag...you Ranger fans always put your players on a higher level then they should be...it's quite extraordinary.
He also gift wrapped a couple of big time goals.
1) Game 3 (Goal by Briere - we all know it was in)
2) Game 5 (Goal by Drury - Jagr's fault that he let shot through, but Lundqvist can't give up a rebound there.
(Goal by Afinigenov) 5 hole..no screen.
3) Game 6 - 5 Goals
Before the series you thought Lundqvist was gonna be the differce over Miller.
I guess you were wrong on that one. Miller was the difference...Miller made the big saves when he had to....no rebound on Roseval's shot...That's what big time goalies do.
Lundqvist is young and will certainly improve and I look forward to the battles. but King Henrik? Come on.
td cmon man..lundy is a great goalie. the defense was horrid yesterday, not his fault. he was all alone on an island yesterday. i thought u knew hockey?..any1 can see w/o him, rangers coulda been swept...give him a lil credit at least.
TJ,
I don't know what you're talking about....you have some issues on your blog?
From who?
idk who, its all imposters i guess..frustrating tho
go look for urself, i g2g for now..later
Maybe it came off the wrong way...
I give him tremendous credit...but he did have some areas which are major concerns....you have to close game out...like being a 4th quarter player in basketball.
He's certainly not a King yet...more like Prince Henrik.
He is definitely your future...but you guys put so much pressure on your players. Why do you guys do that?
lol..its NYC man!!!..we get excited
Yeah... 1-4 in the playoffs, but lets not forget 5-1-2 against the rag-fags... we owned you this year... I'll admit that I think you have a great team until you play us... DID I MENTION WE OWNED YOU THIS YEAR??? Cmon "mookie"... do me a favor and school your boy please
The King? What kinda nick name is that anyways? Never liked it! As for schooling this guy. Not much to do. Give him a day or two. The pain will subside and then he will move on to bigger and better things (hmmmm)
Not sure why TD. I agree though Rangers fans are very tough on their team and the players. Also tend to put a good thing on the pedestal too.
Henrik has got the potential to be top 3 goalie in few years. He has gotten the votes for Vezina two year in a row. Can't take that away but, still at least five other goalies I would have taken before him. This year in the playoffs that is.
henrick's brother is a pretty good player for dallas.
Anyone see Billy Geurin get hit with that slapshot? i saw it for the first time on vs. about 3 minutes ago, nasty! hockey players are the toughest sons of bitches in any sport, hands down. the guy wanted to play tonight, he skated in the warm-ups with no face shield.
Maybe his brother was in goal yesterday...you'd never know, they are identical twins. LOL.
Mookie,
Agree, Agree and Agree...thanks for taking it as constructive criticism and not destructive criticism.
John ~ Yes I was just setting some wee ones straight and did not mean to irk you. Enjoy your summer.
Tj~Cj~Gary~Ny blah blh:
Move along now....The Tee Box is open. The reds are all groomed for you. Might I suggest a driver for your 135yd par three judging from how your team checks and has Koho on their forehead. The fact you are posting the records in the playoffs is COMICAL. We both lost to the same team MORONS!!!! 5-1-2 .... enough said!
In the off-season might I suggest buying a book about hte NHL. There are many good ones. You need to do a lot of research and learn many things before next year, so you do not embarrass yourself in 08. Please come back next year at least knowing some what, what you are talking about and maybe you will not get kicked around all year. Comprende?
koho on their forehead... LOL
TD,
It's all good. I read the posts from you guys ragging on rags fans and laugh. Sometimes I get a little ticked but, I know where you guys are aiming them so it's cool.
Steady,
Name some of the books that you are talking about. I am interested. Please, no Islander memoirs but, good hockey books.
Mookie, that is a logical fallacy. All good hockey books are about the Islanders :P
And I really respect Lundqvist (aside from the Ice girl incident). He is a great goalie and seems to have a good attitude. Watch out for bumps on the noggin!
DUBIE!!
Dubie is officially an Islander..let's go Yoda!!!!
http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/islanders/ny-spisles0509,0,2979336.story?coll=ny-sports-headlines
As happy as I am cause Dubie earned it...What happened to Dunham?
TD, nah, I wasn't wrong, but your "facts" are.
Briere "goal", you're right. He's terrible handling the puck, he should just stay in the net.
Game 5 goals. Tough to corral a rebound through traffic of 4 different players. Afinogenov's goal deflected off Ortmyer's leg. I guess you didn't see the game or read the papers.
Game 6. 5 goals, 4 deflected off someone/something and one beat him, great shot/high glove.
I agree. I underestimated Miller before the series, he rarely gives up a rebound. But I (and by all accounts everyone else) call the Lundqvist/Miller battle a draw. Take away some horrific giveaways by the Rangers D and we win the series.
Yeah, we do put pressure on our players, especially our goalies. Because we CARE. You don't put pressure on Dipietro? You should because he's your goalie for the next 14 years! Do you boo Yashin, yes and that's pressure.
And as far as calling him "The King". It was given to him in Sweden and really took off here after he won the Olympics. Mook, you don't like it? Come on man, he's The King!
TD, I know from previous posts that you're a Ranger hater so I won't try to convince you. But watch the games before you post nonsense.
Good article from Zipay (who'd think that would happen?) about the Adams. I don't like to believe in conspiracies, but there must be something I'm missing about the way Nolan is perceived by the rest of the NHL. After being exiled for a decade he comes back to lead a team, supposedly the laughingstock of the league, to a perfectly respectable season. I know about the scandal rumors in Buffalo, the perception that he's a GM-killer, the racism angle, but what the hell is wrong with the league that they don't recognize the guy is golden? He's widely seen to have ridden on Hasek's coattails in Buffalo, but can the same be claimed for his work this year on the Island? Whose superstar credentials could possibly have carried him?
It's possible that he's not the best guy behind the bench, and maybe in the next year or two we'll see an assistant coach with a stronger strategic sense step into the slot. It's clear that his players want to win for _him_.
John -
I agree with you about Henrik. He's king right now. Mookie, give your boy the credit he deserves. The Lundqvist-Miller duel wasn't a draw. Henrik won it. He clearly had to stop the tougher chances and he was tested almost 2 to 1 compared to Miller. Frankly, I don't think he desereved the Vezina nod this year - you don't nominate based on half a season. But the boy is damn good.
Ryan -
I'm not sure about the Nolan black list just yet. It looks suspicious, but... I think where Nolan went wrong this year was the stretch when he didn't pull Dunham from goal, despite what was obvious to everyone else watching. He coached too much with his heart in that situation. Otherwise he would've gotten the Adams nod over Therien. I mean, c'mon, even I could coach a team with Crosby, Malkin, Gonchar... to a playoff berth.
the bottom line is the ranger future, is far better than the isles. keep telling yourselves it isnt. no 1st or 2nd rd picks, u traded 2 of your best prospects. the rangers dont even have enough roster spots for all there kids next season. the list is endless, chock full of talent. 2 of your best players are leaving and no1 is coming via free agency or farm, of recognizable talent. these are facts steady, do u need to read a book to see this?..capiche?
im, not beeing a dyck (by posting here), but our blog continues to get flooded with bs. so steady, i will not "move along".
another thing..the islander / ranger comparison thing..whos better, yada yada yada...true the islanders went 5-1-3. but if u recall the 1 win (in regulation) the rangers got, was the simon slash game. that was by far the most important game of the season series. at that point both teams were playing great, and in contention. after that the teams went in opposite directions. the 5 isle wins were early and the rangers were terrible then...as far as the playoffs, every 1 is discounting the sweep vs. atlanta. sure it was a good matchup for them, but dont throw it away as meaningless. sweeping any playoff team is an accomplishment. as far as buffalo goes, neither of us saw there "A"ga me until game 6 vs. rangers. and game 5 was in the bag, only 7.7 seconds away. we win that, were in confrence final most likely. at any point were the isles 7 seconds away from winning the series?..i think not..for the record, i gave the islanders alot of credit down the stretch (not here, to my isle buddies). they faced alot of adversity (DP, simon slash, hill 'roids, goal at buzzer etc.), and they got in. winning there last 4 was special, and deserved to get in for sure...if we gave each others team some credit, maybe the bickering will be less. anyway, g'day peeps.
UMMM........ Rangerville.
You do realize that the Islanders system has prospects that many GMs in this league are creaming over.
Bergenheim and Okposo (Who many tout as the steal of that years draft).
Bergenheim and Neilson aren't so much touted as developmental propects either. They are NHL ready right now!!!
I don't see any one in the Rangers system that are touted as "right now" players. As a matter of fact, Bergenheim is poised to become a player of Derek Jeter like stature in NY area hockey. He's a prospect that's been stewing in the minors just waiting to break out.
The Rangers hand in terms of future prospects is on the ice now. What your seeing is it and it's not to deep. If anything there isnt a lot of complement between many of them. Too much of the same type of player.
I think Buffalo suffers from that as well and will serve as stepping stone victims to Ottawa this year.
Let's also not forget that Gervaise, Campolli and yes, even Dipietro have not even developed to their full potential.
hey tj, i didn't realize the isles and rags played 9 times this regular season as your 5-1-3 comment suggests. learn how to do math above the 1st grade level.
John,
I saw every Ranger game...you can say what you want...but you can't play awesome and then give up rebounds or let in weak 5 hole goals at the end of a game...Miller held onto his Lundqvist didn't. There is no draw...Miller is moving on...Henrik is not. Brodeur won cups by being outshot 3 times...just be non-bias for a change.
I'm not saying he is not a top 10 goalie, nor am I saying he won't be a top 5 goalie...but he needs to make adjustments, just like players will make adjustments when they play him. If you can't understand that, then you are just a Homer.
As far as DP...I've been on his case to stay in the net since he started playing with us, he drove me friggin crazy...this year he blossomed and started making much better decisions, when coming out of the net...obviously the dumbest move he made was against the Habs with a 2-0 lead but overall he has made major strides this year, and he competes every night.
Here are the numbers:
Henrik Lundqvist, NYR 70 37 22 8 2.34 160 1767 .917 5 41 50 82.0
Rick DiPietro, NYI 62 32 19 9 2.58 156 1761 .919 5 35 44 79.5
They must both improve , but these goalies have great futures.
haha..so everything i said was right..except for a typo..at least i have some knowledge..
caesar,
i present to u..MARK STAAL!!!..(he has some good genes too!!!)
5/7/2007
On Monday, the Ontario Hockey League announced that Rangers prospect Marc Staal, taken by the Blueshirts in the first round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, had won the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the OHL's Most Outstanding Defenseman for 2006-07.
Staal finished the regular season with five goals and 29 assists for 34 points in 53 games. He also represented the Eastern Conference All-Stars at this year's All-Star Classic in Saginaw, Mich.
Drafted 12th overall by the Rangers in 2005, Staal captured the gold medal with Team Canada at the 2007 World Junior Championships in Sweden. The 20-year-old native of Thunder Bay, Ontario had won his first gold the previous year representing Team Canada at the 2006 World Junior Championship in Vancouver where he was named the Top Defenseman of that tournament.
Staal represented the OHL at the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Canada Russia Challenges. He was named to the 2003-04 OHL First All-Rookie Team and participated at the 2005 Home Hardware CHL Top Prospects Game. Staal was also named to the OHL First All-Star Team for the 2005-06 season.
The Max Kaminsky Trophy is awarded each year to the Most Outstanding Defenceman as selected by OHL general managers. Teams were not permitted to vote for their own nominee. Players received five points for a first place vote, three points for a second place vote and one point for a third place vote.
Staal received 64 points in the voting process, while runner-up Jakub Kindl of the Kitchener Rangers received 47 points. Drew Doughty of the Guelph storm finished third with 37 points.
Last year's winner of the Max Kaminsky Trophy was Andrej Sekera of the Owen Sound Attack. Previous winners of the award include Denis Potvin (Ottawa 1971-72 and 1972-73), Al MacInnis (Kitchener 1982-83), Chris Pronger (Peterborough 1992-93) and Bryan Berard (Detroit 1994-95 and 1995-96).
The award is named in recognition of Max Kaminsky, who enjoyed a 10-year professional playing career that included four years in the NHL with Ottawa, Boston, and Montreal. After he retired from playing, Kaminsky enjoyed a 15-year coaching career that was capped by winning the Memorial Cup with the St. Catherine's Teepees in 1960.
NEXT UP, ALEX BOURRET!!!
August 2005 -- Selected by Atlanta in first round, No. 16 overall, of 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
Feb. 27, 2007 -- Traded to N.Y. Rangers by Atlanta in exchange for Pascal Dupuis and a third-round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
IN O5-06 he had 114 points in 67 games!!
Phil Bourque and Brett Lindros had good genes also. Didn't get them very far.
Marc Staal with 5 goals in 53 games doesn't look like a top flight propect. Seems more like a Scott Scissions type pick to me. Not very impressive.
I've seen lots of prospects with minor league accolades over the years. Not to mention college level (ehm!!! Mike Griere Ahme!!!!) and never develop to their full potentional. JP Dumont broke all of Lemieux's scoring records in juniors and turned out a bust as well.
Marc Staal doesn't look like the player your boosting him up to be. Being tops in the OHL doesn't smack of prime time NHL player either.
Staal sounds like an average minot league DMan to me. Not exactly burning up the scoring sheet or looking like a future Norris Trophy contender.
Would you be willing to make the claim that this guy is an NHL ready prospect in the leagu like Bergenheim?
FOLLOWED BY BOBBY SANGUINETTI!!
June 24, 2006 - Rangers' first choice, 21st overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
offensive type defenseman..20 goals, 33 assists in OHL, the best junior leauge btw... played with hartford in the playoffs this year along with bourret, to continue progress.
Alex Bourett is a concussion victim. He had one year of 114 points and looks set to become a top two line player. That's provided he can keep his marbles in his head.
Good prospect but he's floated around in Juniors and has fallen off a bit in the AHL from his regular pace.
Seems like a good prospect but I'd be concerned about his post concussion status.
lol caesar, u see who his brothers are?.u see past winners on kaminsky award?..one of ur own is there..bergenhiem!!..lmao, he was drafted in '02, thats 5 years ago(u would think he woulda made the team by now). he played for them already, and had 9 points...next?
jp dumont had a solid season (21 goals, 66 points..decent playoff 4 goals) ..grier is a good 2 way player..ur arguements are below average at best
phil bourque isnt rays brother u moron..and eric lindros sux too
caesar... are u saying that eric and jordan staal arent good players?
caesar im willing to say staal is a norris candidate in 4 years..5 at most.
Phil Bourque and Ray Bourque are related. I never claimed they were brothers. Having "good genes" means NOTHING at the NHL level. And Lindros was a mighty fine player before the concussions.
You're touting OHL level prospects. That the same as touting AA propects in baseball.
Your best is post concussion syndrome victim. Sanguinetti is 6 foot 1 178 lb OHL beanpole. He's not going to make in the league as a Dman unless he bulks up.
You have no real solid propects in your system. Not one of these guys are going to play in the NHL next season and make an impact. If anything these guys are 3-4 years away. You're one prospect that's close to making the jump is extremely questionable.
Mike Grierre is journeyman player who lit it up in college. He now makes his living bouncing between the third and fourth line. He's a legend at BU from his playing days. You want to put your chips on the table and say that you hope your prospects wind up like him?
Bergenheim has played on NHL level and opened the eyes of many GMs and NHL vets throughout the league. When GMs come calling the first guy they mention is Bergenheim.
Gervaise is NHL ready.
Tambellini is NHL ready.
Neilson is NHL ready.
Okposo and Comeau are two years out.
Your prospect are all junior and OHL wallowers. You don't have the bottom up pressure in your system that the Isles have developed.
You want to compare the Rangers system to Isles and claim it's better based on perfomances in leagues the equvalent of AA baseball.
Gimme a break.
What's next? You gonna post Hoby Baker winners!!!!
Marc Stall is not eric or jordan staal you jouvenile pissant.
Are you saying that he is?
OK...
Cincy,
I am very excited and proud of Henrik and was he has accomplished. Facts are that this was his 2nd full season and has alot of growing up and maturing in the NHL to do in my eyes. The Vezina will be his one day that is for sure. I can't stand for calling him "King" it just aggravates maybe in a few year I can stand it but, for right now just my opinion the name is a little out there.
DOOBIE...
Knew that was coming. Said it here when he started playing at the end of the year. Good for him, coming in and proving he deserves a shot. TD, your jersey just jumped in value a bit...lol. As for Dunham, he is Free Agent and maybe someone will pick um up to sit on their bench if he is lucky...GOD NO! Hate to think it.
As for TJ and Caesar (in the Library) ;)
The Rangers do have alot going on in the system. Alot of highly "touted" prospects. But, lets face facts here. Staal is along shot this year. Cally and Girardi are staying. Maybe one more kid will get a shot this year. A forward either Immonen or Dawes on the fourth line.
Again like I said yesterday. Putting prospects on a pedestal. Handing out trophies before they even get their skate blades wet on -NHL- ice. Settle down!
i can only hope he is as good as eric or jordan..again i ask u why isnt bergenheim playing RIGHT NOW!!..'02 is a long time ago..i didnt even mention callahan, dawes, girardi, montoya and the other under 25's. prucha is young, tyutin is young, pock...oh hell, even avery is under 30...all this excess can lead to trading for a super star. with all this and more on the horizon...ill take my chances
lol mookie.. its good to see passion in here, lord knows we need more in NY area...caesar has his views, i have mine...we wait to see who is right i guess.
Mookie,
You're a gentleman and a scholar.
But the Rangers suck and I hate you!
Only kidding.. I don't hate you.
:)
Just got back from lunch...felt like letting off some stupid steam.
My bad.
any1 hear susan waldmans orgasm?...did clemens pitch a perfect game in the 7th game of the world series or something?
TJ,
You're starting to remind me of Paulie from 'The Pope of Greenwich Village'.
"It's all in the genes Charlie."
Well I just stole some of Gretzky gizz. Do you want to do some artificial inspiration?
Someone should break both your thumbs.
huh?..guess i need to see the movie to get it...i thought we made progress TD?
TD,
wat do u think of bergenheim?...i value ur opinion is why im asking u.
TJ,
If you saw the movie you'd appreciate it.
I heard alot about the Susan Waldman fiasco....you have a link to listen to it?
TD,
there was a link on newsday.com but its not there anymore for some reason. neil best has an article on it, on monday. i couldnt figure out how to put the link up anyhow, lol. im a mailman, not a techy :/
actully its still there, the audio clip. go to sports, yankees, most emailed stories..and u should find it
I was enjoying reading all of the posts / comments on this BLOG, and then I got to the postings from "NY's only teamNYR" and remembered why I haven't looked at this in a while.
Here's whom I hope the Islanders will try to sign in the off season: Dainius Zubrus and Teppo Numminen.
Ottawa ~ Buffalo should be a fun series to watch. I dunno enough about the Ducks, but the Red Wings sure looked good in the last series vs. the Sharks, so I'll root for them. Red Wings ~ Sabres in the Cup final? Anyone??
Have a good 4 months "off" Greg!
Bergenheim's not playing for the Islanders because his agent decided to play hardball.
Dunham got a bad rap from his play at the end of the year, but he was a solid backup for most of the year. I'm not advocating his return, but I wouldn't spit at the sound of his name either. All it takes is to remember how he steadied the team early on in that road trip.
Is there ANY info on a new coliseum? I can't believe we haven't hears a thing. What in the hell are they doing?
we need a new blog page. i hate having to go through 250 posts to get to where i stopped reading the day before.
Hate is such a strong word...lol
WTF: For updates, go to http://www.lighthouseli.com/
The most recent news I have heard is that Charles Wang has received all the approvals he needs with only the Town of Hempstead remaining... that last approval step will take 12-18 months and then they can start work.

tj: If you are really cj I feel bad for you. Ease up on the whole prospects thing...I can name you 50 cannot misses that have SUCKED!
Mookie I will look through my books and get you the names of the best ones.
I do not care what anyone says....The EAST IS WINNING THE CUP.....AGAIN!
If he is really CJ? Please son, does he actually represent anything I have stated or implied?
SOne of you contended that I would not return if the Rangers lost. I am indeed back.
Henrik was totally at fault for game six. Four goals on eighteen shots - you do the math and the save %. The man needs to get a glove hand in the off season.
We can all bitch about 7.7 seconds, but the fact is, you tackle and club anyone even remotely close to the net. The Rangers deserved what they got.
I do have to agree with one point from our Islander fans, the officiating for both series was absolutely horrific. Some moron from the Sabers staff indicated that it was poetic justice that the Sabres won game five, as if the calls were going against them the entire series. While it may not be the proximate reason th Rangers lost, it didn't help.
Hey, in the end, we are getting our dander up over a bunch of millionaires playing a sport. Screw them all.
Happy summer kids.
Byeeeeee!
im not cj
Not even loading up on steriods could help the Islanders win their first series since 1993. LOL!
Cj-
It is nice to see you write an intelligent post (not just big words,) but it took your team to lose before you would admit the officiating stunk. Go back and read what you wrote to all of us whne we complained. Not very nice! Have a good summer just the same.
Al- Uhhhhhhhhh what?
Mookie~ Great book to get is TOTAL NHL....More an encyclopidia then a book. You want stats and stories...THEY GOT IT!
p.s Nice win by the Amazins last night against a tough pitcher! THE MAINE EVENT at 3pm today....I feel a cold coming on at work. lol
?
Dubie Dubie Dubie!!!
Steady,
Thanks i will check on it.
Good game!
Shaving your head?
You got to head over to the Mets blog and see what clowns over there have to say about it.
Come have some fun...lol
Yeah, good for Dubie. He stepped in and did more than anyone expected, so it's nice he got rewarded for it. It was good to see him give a nod to the fans, too.
I would have been disappointed with the isles if doobie wasn't the back up next year. It seems that every time he's been called on, he's delivered... even before this year. Good for him. I look forward to see him in like 15-20 games next year behind my boy DP. Thanks doobie... you're the man
I doubted the Doobster and he came through. Good for him and his career. Congrats!
Now BOBBLEEADS ~ make some noise and sign somebody. EARLY!
I know it's only May 10th, but I'm getting impatient with the Yashin buyout. If it's been discussed among Wang, Snow and Nolan then that means they see the need for it. If there's a need, DO IT ALREADY. Why wait? The terms are set. Nothing to negotiate. Send a message to the UFAs out there that this team wants to win and will tolerate nothing less.
Indeed. I suppose an argument for delaying an announcement is that the team doesn't want to take the spotlight off the playoffs (or, doesn't want the news to be lost while everyone's eyes are on the Cup).
But, the Rangers and Devils are now out of it. We wouldn't be stepping on anyone's toes. The team's been sitting on its decision long enough.
More importantly, the fan base is on pins and needles anxiously awaiting an announcement.
The Yashin buy-out really is a big deal. If it happens, it means this team is serious about building on this past season. If not...
I agree...it's a little nerve racking.
I'm more nervous about the Yashin buyout then the Smyth deal.
I want Smyth, but Yashin has to go before we can move forward as an organization.
A buyout essentially equals Wang admitting that he and MM made a mistake signing Yashin to his huge contract. That (admiting mistakes) doesn't seem like something Wang likes to do - look no further than how long MM was the GM.
Yo cincy... I was saying the same thing a few weeks ago and some other poster said that buyouts aren't allowed until 6/01/07. Don't know how accurate this is but I'm hoping its the reason we haven't heard anything yet. Its a tough call... even if you buy him out were still paying for under the cap for like 8 years... as much as 4+ mil.... for that money you can get a good quality player... but this guy is so shi**y I guess it beats paying the bum.
It would be 2.2 Million for 8 years...but if Wang looks at the loss as his own, then it shouldn't be a big impact, as I don't think he was willing to meet the 48 Million dollar cap anyway.
Again, if he takes responsibility and looks at it like a long term writeoff, then it shouldn't effect our team, as I'm sure they weren't going to exceed 45 million in payroll anyway.
If he makes it part of Snow's budget, then it's definitely a long term liability...but the fans shouldn't have to suffer for his rookie mistake....even Milbury didn't want to do a 9 year deal.
So Wang has to take some responsibility. Even if Yashin is his friend, so what, he's still paying him 17 million over 8 years...that's certainly nothing to cry over.
