Good morning boys and girls, here are the Division I and Division II brackets for next weekend's state tournament at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester.
Have a great Leap Day everybody!
Thanks to whomever just posted this, but the wild-card selections for the state tournament just came out, here they are for Division I and for Division II.
Keep in mind four wrestlers get chosen at each weight to fill out a 16-man bracket.
Here are the 10 D1 choices from Suffolk...
96 — MATT ROSS, ROCKY POINT
103 — JOSE VASQUEZ, HUNTINGTON
103 — NICK MEINSEN, GLENN
112 — BRANDON ESCOBAR, ROCKY POINT
112 — JAKE BENEDETTO, ISLIP
135 — MIKE CASTELLANO, GLENN
140 — ROB TROY, WHITMAN
145 — T.J. NEIDHART, SHOREHAM WADING RIVER
152 — PAUL DILANDRO, WESTHAMPTON
189 — CONOR PRYOR, WARD MELVILLE
And from five from Nassau...
103 — ANTHONY FACCHINI, SEAFORD
125 — JESSE SGAGLIONE , PLAINEDGE
130 — JOHN CATALDO, MACARTHUR
145 — MATTHEW GAYNOR, CLARKE
285 — JEFF ST. SIMON, VALLEY STREAM CENTRAL
Couple of interesting points...
- Suffolk got the most wild-card bids in Division I. Section V was second with nine.
- All of the D1 selections in both counties were the runner-ups in their respective county tournament at their respective weight (as one would expect), except for Jose Vasquez and Brandon Escobar, who both finished third. Both finished third in the state last year, so that's why they got the nod. It says a lot about 103 and 112 pounds in Suffolk to get two wild cards in both weights.
- I thought that Zach Cogen of Bellmore JFK would have a good chance to go considering he has been a runner-up in the county the past two years, and because the wrestler he lost to last season (Paul Liguori) went on to win the states. But since I'm not as familiar with the kids from the other sections, I can't really argue for or against him.
Obviously there are many cases for argument though, and I'd love to hear about them with your comments right here on the blog.
Okay, when the state brackets come up, you'll see them here on the blog. So stay tuned.
At the New York state tournament, the sections serve as the teams at the event (scoring is done on a section-to-section basis). So Suffolk is its own "team" as is Nassau, as is the CHSAA....so here are all of the "teams" from Long Island competing at the event...
(As a whole, 68 wrestlers from New York will travel up to Rochester in two weeks. Thirty eight on the D1 level and 30 on D2.)
Section VIII Division I:
96 - Mike Lofrese (Garden City)

One wrestler who won't be going to Rochester is Joe Booth of Long Island Lutheran, who won the Prep Nationals at 152 pounds this past weekend at Lehigh University. To give a little perspective on Booth (who somebody comments will attend Drexel next year), he earned a technical fall over Amityville's Angel Mazara (the Suffolk champ at 152) in the finals of the Copiague Tournament earlier this season.
What are your thoughts on Booth and how he'd fare at states?
Hey everyone, here are a couple of links for state tournament info. The brackets aren't out yet, but when they are I will be sure to post them right here on the blog.
Okay, the first is some general info, and the second is the bracket draw, which won't make much sense to many of you unless you read this entire thing.
I have not, so congrats to those of you who have.

Most pins, least time: Spencer DeSena, Garden City, 215 pounds: three pins in 8:26
Mike Lofrese of Garden City just beat Alex Grant of MacArthur, 10-6 in the 96-pound final. It was a great match, with the eighth-grader Lofrese catching Grant with a five-point move and putting him to his back for the duration of the third period after falling behind by a point.
Tough loss for Grant, a junior who looked like the stronger of the two wrestlers until the end.
Great start!
***Update: Vinny Pecora of Baldwin just won at 103, 9-0 over Anthony Facchini of Seaford. Pecora won the match handily, and will be a threat to win the state title.
***Update: Nick Arujau of Syosset was up big on East Meadow's Corey Krimmer in the third and then Krimmer momentarily put Arujau to his back. The refs talked it over though and decided that Arujau had already earned the tech fall. He won, 18-3.
***Update: Baldwin's Kerron Williams, a 19-year old senior, just defeated Joe Kavanagh of Division, a 14-year old freshman, 8-6 in overtime. The kid put up a great fight and constantly pressed the action to the point that Williams was banged for stalling four times.
The crowd got behind Kavanagh and was booing Williams at the end of the match. Not very classy.
Also, I'll post the final results after the round is over.

Division 50
Couple observations...check out the 215-pound weight class where brothers Emmanuel and David Agu of Freeport decided to forfeit rather than wrestle each other. Pretty cool. Congrats to both on becoming all-county.
Also, I think the best thing Nassau has (well really doesn't have) that Suffolk doesn't (well does) is Division II !!
Nassau holds its small school championships at Wheatley because it has just five teams. Again, not to belittle D2, but their final just doesn't belong alongside the D1 mat. I'll try to get the results from Wheatley to post tomorrow.
Okay, time for the finals. See you on the Hofstra mats!
Plainedge's Nick Camera knocked Uniondale's Lesean Mack out of the tournament in the quarterfinal round yesterday, and he just beat him again, 3-2, for fifth place. Mack nearly took Camera down with a double leg in the waning seconds, but the ref said no. It was awfully close.
Mack appeared to be wrestling hurt in the match. He limped off the mat, and is now lying face down on the trainer's table getting attended to. He is in obvious pain. Not sure what they are working on though, looks like his ankle and/or his back.
Gutty performance by a kid who was the top seed and favored to win the tourney to come out and earn all-county honors while competing hurt.
Here are the matchups for the 5 p.m. finals...
96: Alex Grant (MacArthur) vs. Mike Lofrese (Garden City)
103: Vinny Pecora (Baldwin) vs. Anthony Facchini (Seaford)
112: Nick Arujau (Syosset) vs. Corey Krimmer (East Meadow)
119: Steven Bonanno (Wantagh) vs. Zach Cogen (Bellmore JFK)
125: Paul Liguori (Wantagh) vs. Jesse Sgaglione (Plainedge)
130: Mike Doria (Massapequa) vs. John Cataldo (MacArthur)
135: Shane Strumwasser (Massapequa) vs. Matt Eberlein (Island Trees)
140: Rocky Cervini (Plainedge) vs. Andre Berry (Uniondale)
145: John Greisheimer (Wantagh) vs. Matt Gaynor (Clarke)
152: Kerron Williams (Baldwin) vs. Joe Kavanagh (Division)
160: Curran Digney (Seaford) vs. Jordan Spirou (Clarke)
171: John Makastchian (Plainedge) vs. Matt Loew (Wantagh)
189: Ryan Hickey (Calhoun) vs. Anthony Daly (MacArthur)
215: Spencer DeSena (Garden City) vs. Marc Graziano (Jericho)
285: Jeff St. Simon (Valley Stream Central) vs. Bobby Tobia (Calhoun)
Here is the breakdown by team:
Wantagh - 4
Plainedge, MacArthur - 3
Garden City, Baldwin, Seaford, Massapequa, Clarke, Calhoun - 2
Syosset, East Meadow, Bellmore JFK, Island Trees, Uniondale, Division, Jericho, Valley Stream Central - 1
Hey everyone, sorry for the delay in blogging today. The 3rd and 5th place matches just started, so I'll be updating you on any good ones. And after the round I'll post the results of both.
Finals begin at 5 p.m.
p.s. There's kind of a sparse crowd here this afternoon. I'm sure it'll be packed for the finals, but all the kids wrestling now are all-county wrestlers. It seems like more people would want to see them. Maybe it's the weather?
Oh, also, here is a link to my story on Zach Cogen of Bellmore JFK and the other on Vinny Pecora, and the fact that he doesn't have to wrestle Danny Arnel of Syosset who failed to make weight for the qualifiers.
Okay, I'm done here for Day 1, but I'll be back bright and early for the semifinals. Check tomorrow's paper for the up-to-date team scores and semifinal pairings.
Here are the top-5 (well 6 because one is tied) team scores going into the semis...
1. MacArthur 86
2. Plainedge 60.5
3. Wantagh 48.5
4. Seaford 39.5
t5. Syosset, East Meadow 36
We're through the pigtails and the round of 16, and so far no No. 1 or 2 seeds have been ousted from the tournament. Granted, all of those wrestlers have only had one match so far. So it's not all that surprising. Maybe in the quarterfinals...
So far only two three seeds have been defeated, Ariel Guerrero of MacArthur lost to Kelly Palmer of Clarke at 119 (so does that make my argument that 119 is so tough true, or does it make me an idiot because I said Guerrero was one of the best at that weight?), and Mike Dembinski of Hicksville lost to Steve Marino of Garden City at 152.
Other than that, all of the top three seeds remain. I can see some of them falling in the quarters though. We shall see.
***UPDATE***: Plainedge's Nick Camera just upset top-seeded Lesean Mack of Uniondale in a 160-pound quarterfinal. Mack was an all-county wrestler last season.
Let the games begin!
Wantagh's Steven Bonanno and Paul Liguori, the top seeds at 119 and 125 pounds, respectively, both earned easy wins in their first matches of the day.
Bonanno pinned Massapequa's Pat Weinschreider in 52 seconds, while Liguori beat Kevin Bonilla of Seaford, who "stalled out" in the third period.
Bonilla was banged for stalling five times in the match (the fifth resulting in disqualification). Liguori put on a takedown clinic throughout the first period, and then rode Bonilla out for the bulk of the second and third.
Bonilla backed up in the neutral position, and balled up while on bottom, leaving the referee no choice but to nail him numerous times for stalling.
Look for more of the same throughout the tournament from both Liguori and Bonanno.
The pigtail round is dragging along here at Hofstra, without much intrigue yet. In Nassau, brackets consist of 24 men, as opposed to the 18-men fields in Suffolk.
The top four wrestlers in each weight of each of the six qualifiers advances to the county tournament in Nassau, while in Suffolk only the top three out of six leagues advance (the fourth is considered all-league, but is an alternate). It's simple math: 4 x 6 is 24 and 3 x 6 is 18.
This leaves for a long outbracket round which most likely won't produce many placewinners anyway.
However, the good thing is that it gives some younger wrestlers (or older wrestlers that haven't been good enough in the past), a chance to compete on a grand scale. Even if a kid gets just one match at Hofstra, it'll be one he remembers for the rest of his life.
The 119-pound weight class in Nassau may be the toughest in the tournament, with a returning county champ in Steven Bonanno, Zach Cogan of Bellmore JFK, Matt Rich of Plainedge, and Ariel Guerrero as the top four seeds.
It will be fun to see a semifinal round with those four still in it. Bonanno is the clear favorite, but don't sleep on Cogan either.
Hey everyone, I'm all setup here at the Nassau championships at Hofstra after a brief delay. The pigtail matches are going on right now as we speak. I'll be here updating you on any interesting happenings, so stay tuned and stay warm!
Just in case anybody was wondering what the process was to award wild-card entries to the state tournament, here is a missive explaining it.
Enjoy!
p.s. Check the blog throughout the day today and tomorrow, as I will be posting live from the Nassau championships at Hofstra (pending wireless access).
See you on the mats!
Hey everyone, check out this week's edition of the N-Zone, where you can watch highlights from the Suffolk championships and hear from Brentwood coach Ralph Napolitano and Hauppauge's Stephen Dutton.
On that same site you can check out the complete highlights from Stony Brook.
Talk to you later.
***UPDATE***: Here are the Division II results from Nassau, which were held last weekend at Wheatley.
Hey everyone, yesterday I was at Chaminade for the CHSAA state tournament.
I mentioned in the story how Chaminade—despite winning six straight CHSAA titles—hasn't fared very well in the public school states.
In its five previous years of Catholic League supremacy, Chaminade has zero placewinners and its highest point total in a state meet is four (each of the past two seasons). As a whole, the CHSAA has three 11th place finishes (out of 12 sections) and two in 10th (the last two seasons).
(St. Anthony's finished third in the state in 2002, which accounted for all but seven of the CHSAA's points.)
In each of the past three years, the CHSAA has had just two placewinners, and in all three seasons one of the two was Stephen Russ of St. Anthony's. Not too great.
Coach Dlugolonski told me Saturday that he has tried to get some good non-league competition in an attempt to bolster his team's experience. He did. But take the team's 41-14 loss to Wantagh.
All of Wantagh's top guys, Steven Bonnano, Paul Liguori and John Greisheimer (guys who either have or are expected to place at the state level), either pinned or teched their opponent. Granted, only Greisheimer's opponent (Petrone) will be heading to the states, but Chaminade clearly isn't at that level just yet. Maybe in the future, but certainly not now.
*********************
Anyway, here are the results of the 5th/6th place matches from the CHSAA states, which didn't fit in the paper (places 1-6 are considered all-state):
5th place matches:
96: Joe Francolino (Monsignor Farrell) d. Jon Faglione (Chaminade), 1-0

Okay, that's all for now. I'll be back over the next couple of days leading up to the Nassau championships this weekend at Hofstra.
A few of you have been asking for the D2 results and Nassau qualifying results. You can view the most of the Nassau ones clicking the link I provided.
As for the Division II results in Suffolk, they were in Sunday's paper. But in case you didn't see them or don't get the paper, here they are...

Today, I wrote about how 112-pound weight class is so tough. Well, so is 215.
Ernest James (Longwood) defeated Carl Korpi of Miller Place, 5-4, and Brentwood's Jahsua Marsh defeated Dave McGarry of Hauppauge, 10-7, to advance to the final. Any of of these guys could probably win the title in another year. A real fantastic collection of talent at this weight, which also includes Alex Fernan of West Islip, Leon Bodden of Central Islip and Kevin Cassidy from Smithtown East.
If you place at this weight, you've really earned it.
Top-seeded Pat Bell of West Islip won his 171-pound semifinal over Chris Lugo of Deer Park, 6-5, in overtime criteria. The match went into overtime with the score tied at 4-4, and neither wrestler scored in the first O.T.
Both escaped in their half of the second overtime, forcing a third-and-deciding 30-second start. Lugo had the choice and took down, and Bell rode him out.
Top-seeded Randy Marine of Copiague just won 8-6 in double overtime in his 160-pound semifinal against Andrew VanBourgondien of Lindenhurst. It was his second straight overtime win in the tournament.
After a scoreless first overtime, the unseeded VanBourgondien escaped to go up by a point. But with just seconds remaining in the top half of the second overtime, Marine, who looked gassed prior to this move, had a slick duck under to take a one-point lead.
He took bottom in the second half of the second overtime period (which consists of two 30 second spurts). VanBourgondien elected to sacrifice the point and start neutral, but couldn't take Marine down, and lost 8-6.
Marine will face Brentwood's Michael Hernandez, who was a 6-5 victor over Alex Martocello of Miller Place, in the final.
Hello from Day 2 of the counties at Stony Brook. Before I get started on today's action, I'll post my two stories from today's paper. One is about Islip's John LaMonica, who advanced to the semifinals despite starting in an outbracket match yesterday afternoon.
LaMonica partially tore a ligament in his shoulder in a match against Huntington last month, but came back and finished the regular season with a 27-3 record. He just lost to Mike Castellano in the semifinals, 8-6, but what a nice run for LaMonica. Look for him to finish third.
The other story is about the 112-pound weight class. These guys didn't disappoint this morning either, as Steven Keith of Shoreham-Wading River hung on for a 7-5 win over Rocky Point's Brandon Escobar and Islip's Jake Benedetto defeated Brentwood's Alex Gomez, 4-3.
In other action Whitman's Adam Troy advanced to the 125-pound final with a 7-6 win over Glenn's Nick Terdick. He took Terdick down in the final seconds of the match to take the lead. He'll face Mike Hromada of Half Hollow Hills East.
At 135, Stephen Dutton of Hauppauge pinned Commack's Ryan Kreischer in 30 seconds. He'll face West Islip's Sean Messina in the final, and will be the heavy favorite in that match.
More later...
After this post, I have to go do my actual newspaper story, so I'll be taking a blog break until later, but I just wanted to say how Glenn's Mike Castellano pinned Travis Pitre of Sayville in the second period after he was down 8-2.
Quite an effort by Castellano, the second seed at 135.
Big win for Glenn's Nick Terdick, who defeated top-seeded Victor Goady at 125 pounds, 4-2 to advance to tomorrow's semifinal.
Rocky Point's Brandon Escobar, a state placewinner last season at 103, just snuck past Brentwood's Johnathon Murray, 5-4, to advance to the 112-pound semifinal. He took Murray down with about 40 seconds to go in the third period and rode him out.
Quite an effort by Murray, but Escobar lives to see another day...
