County Championship Previews and Predictions

BY JOSEPH STASZEWSKI

NOTE -- Newsday is unable to cover both Suffolk Girls County Championships because of early deadlines and space constrictions. The meet's agate, top three finisher in each event, will run in the paper two days after each meet and a feature will run early next week focusing on the two winning schools.

Suffolk Girls Small School Championship

Today at Suffolk-CC Brentwood

Last season Shoreham-Wading River ended Sayville’s three-year championship run. And now have enough talent to start a streak of its own. Brooke Johnson and Kathryn Sheehan take care of the distance events, Ashley Dell'Aira and Lauren McGrath, also a strong sprinter, helps cover the jumps. Janet Mellor and Janie Turek hope lead a young Mount Sinai team to a title. Jaclyn Marshall’s Kings Park team and Jacqueline Kaste’s Sayville squad are also contenders.

Prediction: 1. Shoreham-Wading River, 2. Mt. Sinai, 3. Kings Park

Suffolk Girls Large School Championship

Feb. 8 at Suffolk-CC Brentwood

Seven-time defending champion Bay Shore looks to continue the streak behind Sarah McCurdy, Jasmyne Spencer, Stephanie Barnes and Alexa deLyra. Its depth and talent should be extremely tough to overcome. Look for Samantha D'Amato and Kelly Abbate and to help Northport to a strong showing. Another tough challenger should be sophomore Lisa Luchsinger and a young Sachem East squad.

Prediction: 1. Bay Shore 2. Sachem East, 3. Northport

Nassau Class A Championship
Feb. 9 at Suffolk-CC Brentwood
9 a.m. – 1 a.m.

BOYS

Farmingdale won its first-ever county title last season, but it could have a tough time defending it against contenders Valley Stream Central and Baldwin. Farmingdale will look to Kirk Serge, the defending county high jump champion, and hurdler Kirk Cajou to help bring back the crown. Valley Stream Central counters with distance runner Kevon Carter and triple jumper Zico Williams. Baldwin looks to hurdler Alex Williams and middle distance runner Barry Mask to end Farmingdale’s reign.

1. Valley Stream Central, 2. Farmingdale, 3. Baldwin

GIRLS

Three-time defending champion Uniondale does not have the same depth and experience of years past and placed in Conference I. It still has the versatile Ashley Hendrix and talented relays. Emily Menges heads a talented group of distance runners that includes Maddie Adams, Brooke Senken and Michelle Rotondo for Garden City. Middle distance runners Nicole Banker and Alyssa Graziano lead a deep East Meadow team. Levittown and Lucia Montefusco should also be a factor.

Prediction: 1. East Meadow, 2. Garden City, 3. Levittown

Nassau Class B Championship
Feb. 9 at Suffolk-CC Brentwood
3 p.m. – 7 p.m.

BOYS

Middle distance runner Andrew Bellinger and distance runner Russell Larson lead a Lynbrook squad hoping to capture its fourth straight county title. Westbury, which lost last season by just 5.5 points, should again be its main competition. Daniel Pierre gives it a serious threat in the jumps and sprints and Deondre Clark is an excellent middle distance runner. Jumper and sprinter Kadeem Howell should also keep Manhasset in the mix.

Prediction: 1. Westbury, 2. Lynbrook, 3. Manhasset

GIRLS

Brianna Welch gives North Shore one of Long Island’s most versatile runners. Package her with middle distance runner Debbie Gilbert and Christina Convey and Conference III champion North Shore has serious threats to score in multiple events. Dana Levitt should score in any running event she is entered in for Lynbrook, which could gain an advantage from a field event team led by jumper Samantha Zee. Valley Stream North and Island Trees should also play a factor.

Prediction: 1. Lynbrook, 2. North Shore, 3. Island Trees
