Hot lines, without the 1-800 number

By Stephen Haynes

The Plainedge softball team is 11-0 in ABC-I, and with coach Jason McGowan, it’s a safe bet that his players know about hustle and his flow.

The son of Bay Shore skipper Jim McGowan is a recreation-time rapper. Yes, the 35-year-old coach is ‘bout it ‘bout it. When he isn’t coaching or spending time with family, he transforms into the Microphone Fiend. And he isn’t bad.

J-Bitter wrote and recorded the Bay Shore theme song – which blares at Fifth Avenue Elementary School as the Marauders take the field – and created enough buzz to garner interest from the Bellport football team and the Long Island Ducks.

His hip-hop hero is Eminem and he often spits over the thumping, bass-heavy “Fight Music” beat (off the D-12 “Devil’s Night” album). On the Bay Shore track, he raps about the program’s success – naturally – and gives props to his pop’s practice regimen.

“5:30 in the morning, that's right, before school/ Everybody’s sleeping except you, and it’s cool/ Because you’re getting better, and you’re getting stronger/ Practices are harder, practices are longer/ But it all pays off in the end, you see/ You gave it all you got and connected as a team/ Now you’re much better as a player and a person/ You look back and laugh about those days of 2-a-days when you were cursin'…”

It’s actually 5:45 (Jim has softened a little), but those bars ain't bad. Far cry from Slim Shady or Jay-Z, but his flow is consistent and his lyrics are much more coherent than say, Soulja Boy’s.

As a rap connoisseur (I’ll post a softball-related verse one of these days), I approve. And, more importantly, the kids love it. When the song is blasting, the Marauders get almost as hyped as Busta Rhymes in a music video.

If you’re wondering: (1) Jim McGowan, 56, prefers The Temptations, Robert Cray, The Four Tops and Bruce Springsteen. (2) The picture is of PaRappa the Rapper. It was a PlayStation video game that came out in 1997. (3) No, I was never able to beat the first level of the game.

Here’s a download link to J-Bitter’s "Bay Shore Song.” Feel free to e-mail me (or contact McGowan) for an .mp3 of the Bellport football theme. Bootleggers are welcomed, too. And don’t let the moniker fool you, he’s a pleasant fella and there’s no parental advisory sticker necessary.

Glen Cove Honors Slain Native... Suffolk Stats

By Stephen Haynes

On Monday Glen Cove beat East Meadow in a non-league game to improve their overall record to 9-3. But of greater significance was the fact that the game was a fundraiser in memory of Thomas Renison, a 48-year-old Glen Cove jeweler who was murdered during a robbery in December 2004. According to Glen Cove coach Kelly McDonough, all of the money raised will go toward a college scholarship for a senior Glen Cove softball player.

Glen Cove won the game 7-5. With the score tied at 5 in the sixth inning, Kim Kessel hit a leadoff single, advanced to third on Sara Graziosi's single, and then scored on a double steal. Graziosi came around to score on Salia Calinda's single to give Glen Cove the two-run cushion. Starter Aja Alter pitched a complete game, giving up seven hits and four walks and striking out five. Kessel finished 3-for-3 with a home run.

Awww, the chillens!

By Stephen Haynes

I’m using this picture of some random eighth-grade class from an epoch ago because I couldn’t find my own junior high yearbook to scan pictures and mock my class (excluding myself, of course, because I was cool). So we go forth with this post, hoping that nobody reading this was in Mr. Hopkins’ class that year.

Those kids, who would be in their late 20s now, might have grown up to be successful and great, but they weren’t Tiana Giuliano in eighth grade. The kid in the back right corner looks jockish, and the one second from the left (rockin' the Howie Long flat top) has an almost-Groucho Marx mustache, but I doubt they had command of four pitches. Danny Almonte did, but he honed his skills playing stickball in D.R. with Miguel Tejada when they were both knee-high young'uns.

Giuliano, Babylon’s wunderkind, has been on a roll. Yesterday she threw a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and gave up one earned run in a win over Center Moriches. She also went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. In her previous start, she scattered four hits, gave up no earned runs and struck out 11 in a win over Mattituck. Oh, and in the start before that, she no-hit Bayport-Blue Point (no pushover, with a 6-2 record). Giuliano struck out seven, walked none and, if not for a fielding error, would have had a perfect game (“Softball Immortality!”).

She has helped lead Babylon to a 7-1 record, second in League VII behind Mt. Sinai.

She was a second baseman for most of last season, batting .294. She became a pitcher late in the year and the 1.28 ERA convinced coach Rick Punzone to make her a full-time pitcher. She throws a fastball, curve, screwball and changeup and has good control of all of them. The hard heater and slow change compliment each other well. She gave the Bay Shore girls some trouble with that combo in their pre-season scrimmage.

No fruit punch Juicy Juice with the scrunchy straw (or whatever kids are into now; I’m old), but we’ve got this:

Truths, darn truths and statistics!

By Stephen Haynes

Here are the Suffolk County league leaders, as compiled by the coaches on April 14, 2008.

Kudos to Jill Donnelly and Lindsey Taylor. Donnelly, right now, has leads in 2/3 of the requisite offensive categories for the Triple Crown. Taylor, the mound maestro who's leading in wins and ERA, needs only to catch Jessica Stavola in strikeouts for the pitching trifecta.

Players of the Day

Monique Torres went 2-for-3 with two home runs, including a Grand Slam, and drove in five runs to lead Mineola (7-0) in their 20-1 walloping of Westbury yesterday. Ouch for Westbury, but props for Torres.

Jamie Castellano scattered four hits and whiffed eight batters in five innings to lead Hauppauge (4-2) over Comsewogue, 16-0. She also went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Her teammate, Katerina Menendez, went 2-for-2 with two three-run dingers, two walks and seven RBIs.

Bombs Away...

BY KIMBERLEY A. MARTIN

Last week, my colleague Stephen (you know, 'the loud one') and I noticed the plethora of no-hitters popping up across the Island. But last night I noticed something even stranger:

Three grand slams.

In one night.

That's kind of weird, don't you think?

Against Sacred Heart, Kellenberg senior catcher/pitcher Victoria Pisciotta went 2-for-3 with a grand slam to pace the Firebirds to a 8-3 victory. I heard from her Pisciotta's uncle John Driscoll that the senior -- who also pitched three one-hitters this season -- missed most of last year due to a "freak" hand injury. Apparently she's back.

In other news, Brentwood shortstop Megan Gwynn went 2-for-4 with a grand slam, four RBIs and two runs as the Indians cruised to a 13-0 win over Lindenhurst.

But the "Clutch Performer" award has to go to Monique Torres of Mineola who hit two home runs -- including a grand slam -- as the Mustangs lit up Westbury, 20-1.

I never saw anything like this covering softball in New Jersey.

So, I'm wondering: what's in the water here?

Birnbaum: On Fire (Still)...

BY KIMBERLEY A. MARTIN

HaleyBirnbaum.jpg

Just heard the Long Beach-Calhoun score...Marines: 17-3. (Ouch.)

I also happened to catch this interesting tidbit: Long Beach's Haley Birnbaum hit her sixth home run in eight games. (Wow.)

The sophomore's legit -- whether it's on the field or in the circle.

(Trust me. I saw her with my own eyes , folks.)

She's hit four home runs in four league games this week: a game-winning grand slam against Carey, a solo shot in extra innings against MacArthur, a three-run homer against Massapequa and another three-run dinger today against Calhoun.

Freshmen Phenoms...

BY KIMBERLEY A. MARTIN

St. Dominic coach Mike Gordek knew Isabella Corrao would be something. But he didn't expect her to be this good, this quickly.

The freshman tossed her third-no hitter of the season today, striking out 15 in a five-inning game, as the visiting Bayhawks blanked St. Joseph, 10-0. (Granted, St. Joseph (0-5) isn't the toughest of competition -- but 15Ks is 15Ks.)

“I knew she was better than the average girl at her age, but now she's showing me that she can compete with girls that are older than her," the coach said.

Despite losing 3-0 to St. John the Baptist on Monday, Corrao gave up just three hits and struck out 16 and in a 2-0 loss to Kellenberg, she pitched a two-hitter and fanned 11.

"She’s hanging with all the big schools. She's doing her thing," Gordek said of Corrao, who also pitched a perfect game against St. Agnes on March 15, striking out 13 of 15 batters. "We just have to hit with them now."

But Corrao isn't the only freshman turning heads this early in the season.

Whoa, mo' no-nos!

By Stephen Haynes. Feel free to e-mail any comments, compliments, complaints or critiques. Yes, I even respond to angry parents.

Anyway...

Everybody and their mother (if you happen to be in a family of softball enthusiasts) knows that softball is often a pitching-dominated sport, but the plethora of phenomenal pitching performances in the last couples days has been wow-worthy. If Jennie Finch reads Newsday.com and why wouldn’t she? she’s probably smiling.

On Monday, Olivia Galati pitched a perfect game and whiffed 17 in St. John The Baptist’s 3-0 win over St. Dominic. Bigger balls + aluminum bats + teenage fielders should almost make such a feat impossible. A big "w00t w00t!" to Galanti for that.

A little bit after that, Carly Taitz threw a no-hitter in which she K’d 9 (pun intended) to lead Bayport over Southampton, 12-0.

Then Megan Sweezy no-hit Lindenhurst and struck out 12 in East Islip’s 7-0 win. A first-inning walk cost her the perfect game.

Similar scenario for Megan Butterworth, who pitched a no-no and missed the perfecto because of an early BB. Ms. Butterworth struck out 13 and went 2-for-3 with three runs scored in Holy Trinity’s 10-0 win over Sacred Heart.

Let's pause for a perspective break: And this ain’t 1896 or the dead (soft)ball era if there ever was one because there are plenty of hitters batting over .400 and runs are being scored. Not to compare sports, but it’s sorta like Pedro Martinez circa 2000, when he had a 0.73 WHIP in the AL East.

OK, now back to gushing...

On Tuesday, Amanda Filippazzo no-hit North Babylon in West Islip’s 6-0 win. She walked two and racked up 16 strikeouts.

And, of course, Jessica Stavola was feeling left out so she blanked Shoreham-Wading River. She walked one and struck out 15 in East Hampton’s 3-0 victory.

Not to turn the blog into Stovola Watch, but she’s given up one hit and walked one in 21 innings, and that’s in addition to the 47 strikeouts and .571 average. If she keeps this up, Jim Leyland might pack his notebook and a pair of binoculars and take a trip out to Long Island.

“It’s getting ridiculous,” East Hampton coach Lou Reale said. “If Jessie keeps going like this, she might be the most dominating athlete in any sport.”

That statement isn’t so hyperbolic if you think of it relatively and strictly in terms of dominance of their own competition. Roger Federer and Tiger Woods’ winning percentages aren’t as good.

Suffolk County Softball Coaches Association's poll

1. Easthampton (2-0 in League VI)
2. Bay Shore (3-0 in League II)

Stavola has a…well, Stavola-like performance

Yesterday, East Hampton beat Rocky Point, 7-0, behind superstar Jessica Stavola, who pitched a complete game one-hitter (with no walks) and struck out 19.

In her first start, she threw a no-hitter and blanked Commack, 4-0, fanning 13 along the way.

Last season, Stavola led all of New York in strikeouts with 371, which was a Long Island record, and set the state record for strikeouts in a game with 24 against Miller Place. She finished with a 0.19 ERA. The senior has commit to UConn.

“The way she’s started this season,” said coach Lou Reale, “who knows, she might break her own records.”
