A Win Worth Savoring
As I sifted through today’s Newsday, one score stood out above all others: Ross 59, Shelter Island 53. This League VIII boys basketball thriller might not excite the senses. But the result was cause for celebration at the small East Hampton private school.
You see, Ross snapped a 51-game losing streak. As I reported in the Suffolk Basketball Insider a few weeks back, Ross hadn’t tasted victory since a Jan. 24, 2004 win over Smithtown Christian. That included back-to-back 0-16 seasons.
If you do the math, that means it's been four years since the boys last won. That's an entire career for some seniors. So while a 1-15 season might not amount to much, at Ross it was reason to cheer.
