Everyday Heroes

Take your hat off to Tom Piccirillo, Rich Reichert and all the other police officers and fire fighters that take time out of their lives to coach at the high school level. It’s a somber day in New York and around the nation as we remember the victims of Sept. 11, 2001. It was a day where too many police and firefighters paid the ultimate sacrifice.

It shouldn’t take a national tragedy to remind us who the real heroes are – life’s everyday heroes. And there are so many who devote a life to community service and continue to contribute even after their shift is done. Like Piccirillo, a Suffolk County police officer and football coach at Mepham, or Valley Stream Central softball coach Art Riccio -- a Flatbush-based firefighter who escaped the North Tower moments before it collapsed – these guys shape young lives on the side. Reichert and his entire football staff at St. Anthony’s have ties to law enforcement.

So give them your respect and a pat on the back. The day is a tough one for everyone. But for guys who knew and lost colleagues, remembering 9/11 can be crushing.
