Ward Melville enjoyed a flawless season in which the boys and girls teams claimed the Long Island titles and had accolades heaped upon them. At the epicenter, though, were stalwarts Peter Tyson and Sarah Barger, the Fencers of the Year.

Tyson went undefeated and led the boys team to its fourth championship in five years, and Barger (28-1) led the girls to their sixth straight perfect season. Tyson ranks 31st in the nation – one slot ahead of teammate Keith Feldman – Barger is 21st in the women’s bracket.

The storylines of the two saber standouts, both of whom compete in the Junior Olympics, not only parallel, but are interwoven.

The two met in second grade at Setauket Elementary School and have been friends since, and in high school, the honor students had similar advanced placement class schedules.

But Tyson didn’t take up fencing until after a coaxing session in French class.

“We’re just chatting in class and Sarah tells me that I should try out because I’d always wanted to,” said Tyson, who went 31-0. "I said, ‘Fine, I might as well.’”

Fencing first piqued his interest in seventh grade, but he didn’t pursue it. At the time, he was busy with soccer. He quit that in 10th grade and wanted to take up another sport.

According to Barger, 17, who by then had already developed into a star fencer, Tyson had been considering trying out for gymnastics. “It didn't take too much convincing, though,” she said. “Hitting people with swords is appealing for guys. Beats gymnastics.”

Barger, who went 7-0 in the Suffolk championships, got into fencing as a seventh-grader, after years of watching her sister, Diana. “I didn’t want to be like her, I just wanted to beat her,” said Barger, ever emulous.

So when Tyson tried out – and made the team by impressing coaches Jeff and Jennie Salmon with his footwork and receptiveness – he and Barger added another strand of similarity.

Tyson, 18, was placed on the junior varsity team to start off, and although he was promoted to varsity the following year, he sat behind the starters, most of whom were established stars. Ironically, Feldman was among them.

While he waited in the wings, Barger was helping guide the girls’ teams to 99 consecutive victories – a record that surpassed the 1990-98 Brentwood teams. She went 22-0 and was an All-Long Island selection in 2007.

But even then, the two continued to influence and motivate each other, honing their skills in competitive sparring matches. “Getting to go against each other is part of what makes us so good,” Tyson said. “Some of the best competition we faced was internal.”

“There was a friendly rivalry, but he’d whoop me,” Barger joked. “I’d get a couple touches off him sometimes, but he’d beat me pretty badly.”

Lack of commitment, Tyson said, is the reason he didn’t thrive as a soccer player. His summers were spent relaxing or playing at day camps. That doesn’t happen anymore, with Barger pushing him.

He now dedicates his "free" time to meliorating his skills. And this year, he reached the summit of Long Island fencing. Waiting there to greet him was his buddy.

While other toddlers were still mastering the basics of walking, it was clear, even early on, that Jessica Panza was just a little bit more advanced.

She was 3 years old then, and, inspired by high wire flips and stunts that she had seen on Power Rangers, decided that she wanted nothing to do with dance class, her father said. Instead, she had decided, she would be a gymnast.

And, while the coming years likely saw other kids trade in one activity for another – dance class and karate for soccer practice and band – Panza stayed on. By the age of six, she was winning almost all her club meets, her father, Drew Panza said.

“She just seemed to be better at gymnastics” than those around her, he said. “It just seemed like it was more natural, more exceptional.”

This was perhaps none clearer when Panza decided to embark on her high school career. She won the New York club regionals at the ages of 15 and 16 and, at 16, advanced to the nationals. There, competing against some of the strongest non-professional competition in the nation, she claimed sixth.

But Panza, 18, and now a senior at Island Trees, had no other outlet. The school had no gymnastics team and, by sophomore year, her involvement in the sport had lagged. She left her club, Phoenix Gymnastics, and focused on academics instead.

And though it looked as if Panza had left gymnastics behind, it soon became abundantly clear that it hadn’t left her. Panza had made a mark and Long Island’s coaches, including championship coaches Kim Rhatigan-Drexler, of Bethpage/Plainview and Robin Thomas, of Kings Park , weren’t ready to give up on a rare talent.

“The first time I saw her, she was a very young gymnast that had a grace and power that overpowered everybody else,” Thomas said. “She’s one of the most talented kids I’ve ever seen.”

Soon, Drexler and her assistant coach, Debbie Rut, were encouraging Panza to join their team as an independent. When Panza came over, Thomas was also supportive, helping her get over the mental and physical hurdles of a year off. Panza joined Thomas’ club, New Image gymnastics – which is littered with some of the Island ’s best talents.

“She had taken that year off, so she needed to get back her confidence,” Thomas said. “She needed someone to push her to have that belief in herself.”

The tag-team strategy worked – Panza competed and excelled, even beyond her own expectations. In her first year, the junior qualified for the all-state team and later took second in the state all-around with a 37.125, second only to Section I's Kylie Shields.

In her second and final year, she blew that away. She squeaked in first with a 38.1 – again at her shoulders was Shields, only 25-hundreths of a point away.

It was a competition that could have easily gone another way, Panza said. Her vault score was originally lower, but Drexler had gone to the judging table and pled Panza’s case. It earned her only half of a tenth, but it was enough for the victory.

“We never thought it would be that big,” Panza said of the change. “I knew going in [to the competition] that it was going to be close, and that it was going to be either me or her. I was kind of leaning towards her.”

The state title, she said, was simply “awesome.”

It was also a fitting way to cap a year of victories. Panza spent the season dominating in Nassau , though her scores don’t count for Bethpage . And, in the state qualifiers, she swept every event on her way to a 38.275. Her skill has led to a gymnastics scholarship with North Carolina State , which she will be attending come fall.

Panza is excited and naturally nervous. The girl who almost decided to call it quits will be competing twice a week in one of the top programs in the nation.

“It really feels like my job,” she said. “I love it.”

The NCAA school is ranked 15th in the country for gymnastics. She will, Thomas said, be competing with and against the best of the best. Panza’s game, she added, will no doubt elevate.

“I don’t really think we’ve see the best of Jessica yet,” she said

Nine-time champ Bethpage/Plainview had a strong showing at the team championships but couldn't claw past a clearly pumped Oceanside squad. Those results and more:

1. Oceanside - 168.025

Erin Senior's 9.0 on vault secured the come from behind victory over Massapequa. She got an 8.9 on bars, an 8.15 on beam and a 9.25 on floor - good enough for second in the all-around with a 35.3. Paige McCarthy came up big as well, with a 34.175.

2. Bethpage/Plainvew - 165.95

Bethpage found itself in a strange new world going into the fourth and final event last Tuesday: third place. They had three points to make up going into floor and fell just short. Danielle Sadick was up to form and led them with a 33.725 in the all-around and got a team-high 9.0 on beam.

3. Massapequa - 165.45

Make no mistake, Massapequa had everyone sweating going into the final event. The team, led by Mike Capone and filled solid with non-club gymnasts, was on the verge of pulling off a big upset. But the bars, pretty much the hardest event to master, proved to be its undoing. The team scored a highly respectable 38.725 but it wasn't enough to neutralize Bethpage's high scores on floor and Oceanside's on vault.

4. Sewanhaka - 157.95

Brittany Trumpy and Maria Doddo were on fire for Sewanhaka. Trumpy led the team all around with a 34.9 and a 9.3 on floor while Doddo got the night's highest score on beam (9.3).

5. Hicksville - 150.1

How much is Hicksville going to miss Danielle Cecco when she graduates later this year? Cecco was the night's highest scorer on the all-around. She earned a 35.55 with a 9.0 on beam and a 9.35 on floor. Allison Osmundsen was right behind with a 34.65.

6. Carle Place - 144.65

Stephanie Madey led Carle Place with a 32.15 in the all-around and an 8.6 on beam.

7. Wantagh - 143.952

Seventh-grader Brianna Quinn in an amazing little gymnast. She clocks in at about four feet (give or take a few inches) and consistently leads her team in competition. Tuesday was no different as Quinn led her team in every event, including a 32.825 overall and an 8.65 in beam. She's only 12, folks. Keep an eye out on this one.

8. South Side - 138.075

Emily Meoli led South Side with a 29.65 and a 8.15 in vault. Emily Considine had an 8.25 on floor.

So apparently Connetquot has a really good cheerleading squad. Like Bring It On good. <img src="http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj37/ndsports_photo/connetquot.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"WIDTH="310" HEIGHT="220" ALIGN = "RIGHT" HSPACE="7" VSPACE="7">

The girls, about 20 of them, compete under the watchful eye of first-year head coach Lauren Paino and surprised pretty much everyone this weekend when they took sixth at the 2008 UCA National Cheerleading Championship in Florida. The high-flyers, who were edged out by Sachem East in the regionals, rallied to best some of the biggest names in high school cheerleading on Sunday. (Check 'em out in the photo.)

"This is the first time we've ranked this high," said a clearly elated Paino. "The girls were ecstatic."

Connetquot has only made it to the finals twice, Paino said, but a new focus on stunting has set them apart from the rest.

"The girls practice religiously every day," she said, adding that practice went on for about two to two and a half hours, six days a week. And it paid off: after regionals, Connetquot beat out 50 schools for a chance to compete in the finals.

Paul Laurence Dunbar of Louisiana took first while Sachem East, the Long Island powerhouse, took 12th. Go here for a full list of the winners.

BY LAURA ALBANESE

Oh, Oceanside. A few weeks ago I got all fancy and decided to compare Andy Morris' squad to the Tantalus of Greek myth. He was punished by the gods by always being thisclose to the one thing he wanted, only to have it move away. For Tantalus, it was food and water. For Oceanside, it's the county title.

And lest you think Oceanside bucked the trend and pulled out the upset over the ridiculously deep Bethpage/Plainview, let me put that notion to rest right now.

Nope - no rousing come-from-behind victory here. Just the best gymnasts in Nassau duking it out with everything that they had to offer. Bethpage bested Oceanside by a sliver: 167.5-166.15, led by Danielle Sadick, who came in second in the all-around with a 34.4. Nothing is official yet, but talk from the coaches indicate that this meet, the final one of the regular season for both, decided the leader of Conference I. Of course, there's the little matter of the county meet on Feb. 12. I trust Oceanside will feel a lot better about losing Conference I if they manage to unseat the nine-time champs.

A little more fodder for the best gymnast in Nassau debate:

On the one hand, we have Sadick, who is a consistent leader on the best team around. Then there's Oceanside's Erin Senior, who finished first with a 35.1 in Monday's meet. The thing is, though, it might be neither of them. Lost in the hubbub is Jessica Panza, an independent who competes with Bethpage but who's scores don't count towards the team total. The girl is seriously talented - she came in second in the state last year and pretty much blew everyone out of the water during the last meet. Suddenly, the state qualifier on Feb. 14 got just a little more interesting.

Great Neck North’s Sari Levy won the girls epee circuit in the Nassau County individual fencing tournamnet on Friday, emerging from a group of the county's elite 27 as the last lady standing. Not bad for someone who is sword-fighting on a broken foot.

Levy, the Blazers captain, fractured a bone in her left foot last month. And that’s the second time it's happened in less than a year. You know how we, the hyperbolically-inclined media, like to overuse words like “warrior” and “heart”? Well, here we go again, but this one is kinda warranted.

Last May, Levy suffered a stress fracture to the third metatarsal bone at the end of the scholastic season (she went 29-1, by the way). Nevertheless, she went on to compete in two North Atlantic tournaments in the spring and finished second and third, respectively. The junior trained all summer to come back strong for her high school team, but she fractured the second metatarsal in the same foot – because Misfortune is a sadist – during a January practice.

“She has a high foot arch so she’s prone to that injury,” said her father, Dan, a doctor. “Also, her style in matches is to move continuously [and] she leaps when she lunges, so that’s part of what causes it.”

But the 17-year-old, with the heart of a warrior, courage of a lion and Rambo-esque grit (without the guns and steroids, though), keeps coming back. On Friday, the epee tournament came down to a final four fence-off between Levy, Srey Beaulac (Garden City), Courtney Collins (Oyster Bay) and her Great Neck North teammate, Brooke Appelman. Levy topped Beaulac 5-0 in her final bout to take the title.

“Sometimes it hurts a little, but when you have so much adrenaline pumping, it doesn’t hurt,” said Levy, who was voted MVP and Most Dedicated on the varsity team. “When you’ve got so much passion for what you do, it doesn’t matter.”

She also said that “success is where preparation meets opportunity,” and she takes the preparation stuff real seriously.

Levy, who began fencing as a seventh-grader, now practices four days a week for three hours. And that’s because her coaches have forced her to cut back because of the injuries. According to her father, she had heard that the Hungarian national team trains eight hours each day, and thus, had made it her aim to match that.

“They think I got the injury from over-training,” Levy said. “So they tell me I’ve got to give myself time to rest and heal during the week.”

Almost like the archetypical “tragic hero” in literature, where her greatest asset is sometimes an impediment. You can’t teach that kind of toughness and competitive drive, though. That's a sports cliché, but it's true.

She began taking Karate classes in kindergarten. Why so early? Because her cousin, who is the same age, started even earlier and earned a yellow belt and she wanted to race him to black belt status. “We both got black belts,” she said. “He got it first by a few months, but only because he had a head start.” She eventually gave up the pursuit of a second degree black belt and got into fencing because her friends were doing it. And, of course, she wanted in. That turned out OK.

Conference II is a little bit like the red-headed stepchild of girls gymnastics. It's a second-tier gymnastics league and intended especially for those schools that can't quite compete at the same level as other programs. It probably doesn't get as much attention as it should and it's not supposed to make much of a fuss this late in the season.

Don't tell Carle Place that, though.

Carle Place, which currently sits atop Conference II with Hewlett, bested Port Washington 152.65 - 140.75 on Wednesday. The win, a good ten points higher than average, puts it one step closer to clinching a spot in the county championship meet on Feb. 12 at Oceanside. If either Carle Place or Hewlett make it, they'll be competing with the best of the best of that other conference.

It's a tough road, ahead, though. Carle Place will have to make a good showing against conference rival Long Beach and juggernaut Bethpage/Plainview. Meanwhile, Hewlett will have to sit back and watch - hoping that their past meets, which put them in the low 140s, will be enough to snatch the Conference II title and the possible coveted county spot.

For a full update on the struggle going on in the oft-ignored Conference II, check out tomorrow's gymnastics insider at newsday.com.

BY LAURA ALBANESE

As the Nassau gymnastics season comes to a close, the focus will inevitably fall on Bethpage/Plainview JFK and its dogfight against a rising Oceanside in the upcoming county meet. While this is all well and good, I can't help but feel as if there's a little something more going on in the girls gymnastics scene. Juggernauts are great, really, but where would a sport be without its scrappy underdogs?

I present to you Massapequa.

Massapequa came in third in last year's county meet and are forging a similar path this year (as of last week, they're averaging 160.1 - about four points behind Bethpage). But where Bethpage and Oceanside are packed to the brim with club gymnasts who have been doing this since they could walk with any sort of security, Massapequa is lacking. The closest thing they have to a club gymnast is Ashley Tardanella, who goes once a week.

For anyone who isn't well-versed in the world of high school gymnastics (which is, admittedly, pretty much everyone), this is a big deal. High school gyms are suited up to a modified level nine to accomodate newer girls while club and state level gyms are a regular nine. Oceanside's Erin Senior, arguably the best gymnast in Nassau right now, said that this meant everything was a little harder at club. The skills are more difficult, there's more practice involved, and there's more one- on-one instruction.

Massapequa coach Mike Capone said he knows the plight of girls who don't have the resources for club gymnastics but want to compete anyway.

"I’m a former club coach and I'm taking nothing away from the club kids…but again, you take Massapequa and we don’t have that," he said.

Regardless, Massapequa refuses to roll over. They were undefeated until they met up with Oceanside, who out-maneuvered them by three-tenths of a point. If they can come that close, Capone said, that means there's a chance. And if there's a chance, Massapequa, led by Caitlin Baldwin and Melanie Sosnowski, will try to capitalize.

"To be honest with you, if we’re on we could give them a run for their money," Capone said. "They have too many top quality kids but we match up very well in anybody in the league."

And you thought gymnastics wasn't exciting.

Massapequa will take on Oceanside, Bethpage/Plainview, and everybody else during the county meet at Oceanside on Feb. 12.

No one in the country outside of New York does this in high school athletics. What really concerns me, is the coaches voted 39-3 against such a scheduling format and the Nassau Athletic Council just didn't care. They still went ahead with the change. The question is WHY????

What do you think? I'd like to know.
