Smith's return boosts Manhasset

BY ADAM RONIS

One injury can really affect a team in the new ability-grouping format. Just take Manhasset as an example. Point guard Italia Smith missed three games after neededing 10 stitches in her lip following a collision with a teammate in practice. Manhasset went 0-3 in her absence.

"Without her, we had trouble breaking the press," coach Vinny LoBianco said. "I know the injury hurt us and it has hurt Wantagh, too."

Claire Peterson missed some time for Wantagh, which started off very slow. Wantagh is beginning to play better with her return.

Manhasset (5-5) is 2-1 since Smith returned to the floor. She has 12 points and four assists in a 61-45 win over Island Trees tonight.
