Gibson pulls off a Willis Reed?

BY ADAM RONIS

It wasn't a playoff game or anything close. But Gabrielle Gibson did her best impersonation of Willis Reed tonight. Gibson, who injured her ankle on Thursday against North Babylon, was supposed to be out at least a week.

But with Copiague trailing Centereach 30-21 entering the fourth quarter, Gibson was called into action and she delivered. Gibson scored 14 points in a 22-8 fourth quarter to rescue Copiague from an upset in a 43-38 win. She also had four rebounds, four steals and two assists.

The loss would have been damaging for its hopes of a league title. North Babylon leads Copiague by one game after beating it on Thursday. The teams meet one more time. The loss would have likely hurt its chances as being a top four seed, too.

Judging from her performance, Copiague was likely being very cautious with Gibson. I doubt it would risk her future for a regular season game. What a performance for Gibson. It's one to remember.
