Does losing take a toll?

BY ADAM RONIS

Many coaches I have talked to regarding ability-based grouping are against it. One of the arguments against it is good teams will lose more often than usual and although those top teams are assured of a playoff berth, they could have low confidence entering the playoffs.

Malverne is an interesting case study. Malverne is seeded No. 2 in ABC, but is a Class B team playing all A schools in the regular season. Malverne is struggling in the league with a 1-6 mark, but knows it will be the top seed in the Class B playoffs.

Based on the seeds, Malverne is clearly the best B team. The team has reached the Class B finals for five consecutive years. Will the losing take a toll when the postseason begins?
