Doherty committs to Boston College

BY ADAM RONIS

Sachem East junior Kristen Doherty orally committed to attend Boston College. The 5-10 point guard averaged 28 points, 5.6 steals, 3.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and hit 64 three-pointers in her junior season. She led Sachem East to the Suffolk Class AA county championship game for the second consecutive season.

Doherty led the Flaming Arrows to 22 consecutive wins to open the season before the team lost in the championship game. She scored a career-high 38 points against Midwood on Dec. 27, 2008 and scored at least 30 points seven times this past season. She scored 27 points in the county final loss to Copiague. Doherty, a two-time All-Newsday first-team selection, has scored 1,691 career points.

Live from Glens Falls: Copiague loses

BY BOB HERZOG

Copiague could not overcome a fourth-quarter scoring drought that lasted for 4:18 and was defeated by St. Michael of New York, 50-46, Saturday afternoon in a Class AA semifinal.

After Ieasia Walker made one of two free throws to give the Eagles a 40-39 lead with 5:12 left, Copiague did not score again until Gabrielle Gibson's layup with 54 seconds left that cut the deficit to 46-42.

St. Michael took the lead 42-40 on a three-pointer by Janine Davis with 4:44 left. Allysa Rohlehr hit another three with 1:15 left and Jennifer O'Neill added a free throw for a 46-40 advantage with 1:01 remaining.

Walker cut it to 46-44 with two free throws but O'Neill hit 1-of-2 for a three-point lead with 25 seconds to go. Gibson missed an open jumper and Copiague was forced to foul. That gave O'Neill a chance to add two more free throws for an insurmountable 49-44 lead with 16.9 seconds left.

Copiague finished 22-5.

St. Michael (24-3) faces Murry Bergtraum (23-1) on Sunday at noon in a battle of New York City schools for the state Federation AA title.

This should be interesting.

Copiague erased a six-point third-quarter deficit to catch St. Michael and forge a 37-all tie after three quarters in a semifinal battle of two AA teams, both nicknamed Eagles.

Which one will still be flying when it's over?

Stay tuned.

Live from Glens Falls: Copiague trails at half

BY BOB HERZOG

Copiague is hanging tough with St. Michael, trailing the state's No. 2-ranked AA team, 30-26, at halftime.

St. Michael's height advantage has resulted in a 23-14 edge in rebounding. Neither team is shooting well, a product of aggressive defense.

Ieasia Walker, named Saturday as 2009 Miss New York Basketball by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York, certainly looks deserving. She scored 11 points in the first half and added a couple of assists.

St. Michael was led by Jessie O'Neill and Allysa Roehler with nine points apiece. Taylor Ford leads St. Mike's with six rebounds. Raven Walker grabbed five for Copiague.

Ieasia Walker Named "Miss New York Basketball"...

BY KIMBERLEY A. MARTIN

This just in: Copiague's Ieasia Walker has been named the 2009 Miss New York Basketball...

The award, which is presented by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York, Inc., is viewed as the top award a high school basketball player can receive in the state...

Coming into Saturday's semifinal, Walker -- who will attend South Carolina in the fall -- was averaging 23 points, 11 rebounds and five assists per game.

Lincoln's Lance Stephenson and Brandon Triche of Jamesville-Dewitt were named co-winners of the "Mr. New York Basketball" award...

BY BOB HERZOG

In a spirited first quarter, St. Michael Academy of New York led Copiague, 17-14, in the Class AA semifinal.

Ieasia Walker of Copiague scored eight points. Jennifor O'Neill, wearing the number "00" scored seven for the state's No. 2-ranked AA team. The winner of this game gets No. 1 ranked Murry Bergtraum of New York in Sunday's noon championship game.

Class AA Semis: Copiague vs. St. Michael Academy...

BY KIMBERLEY A. MARTIN

A guy next to me took one look at St. Michael Academy and joked: "Wait, is this UConn? I've never seen a front line this big on a high school girls team."

We're talking 6-1 to 6-5-big, folks...

Copiague coach Carole Olsen said there's nothing the Eagles can do about the height disadvantage, but speed has always worked in her team's favor.

Plus, she said with a smile: "We've got Ieasia and Gabby."
