What a great day to open the football season across Long Island! Perfect weather, the early morning temperature in the mid 70's, sunny and no wind. I always notice the wind as a former quarterback. It's one of the first things on your mind, unless you throw the football like East Islip's Rob Calabrese, who now wings it for Central Florida. He could throw it in a hurricane and still make the completion. Hey, that was last year.
Who's going to be this year's top quarterbacks? Well, that's what I'm about to try and find out. It's only the first day of camp but I'm fired up.
I'll be out at camps all week looking to get a glimpse of this year's Hansen hopefuls and top Thorp candidates. My colleague Bob Herzog will also be out at practice checking out different teams and the top pre-season seeds.
So, with most physicals out of the way and all the paperwork in order we are ready for some serious conditioning. The first few days are about conditioning and getting rid of the guys who aren't serious. We'll see who put in the effort during the off-season and which teams have the early season edge.
Check out my blog each day for updates on various programs and players to watch. Football is back!

What schools and players are you going to be checking out?
I went over to Wantagh on Tuesday and saw West Islip today. The plan is to see another 10 to 12 schools over the next two weeks, including Riverhead, Elmont, Islip, Lawrence and Sayville. Any requests??
