LIVE UPDATES: Class A state final -- Clarke vs. Aquinas Institute

BY ADAM RONIS

Unfortunately, we didn't have internet access at our sites. I was covering Massapequa, which lost 4-3 in 11 innings to Mamaronek (Section I) in a Class AA state semifinal. Corey McLaughlin is covering Clarke, which is in the Class A final now against Aquinas Institute (Section V). Unlike Luis Castillo, we don't drop the ball here at Newsday.

I am at the hotel and Corey will phone in updates to me for you guys.

Clarke trails 1-0 after one inning. The run scored on a wild pitch by Brian Sundberg, who got out of a one-out bases loaded jam with two strikeouts.

UPDATE:Ryan Sloane tripled off the wall in leftfield and scored on a two-out single by Sundberg. Clarke 1, Aquinas Institute 1

UPDATE: The score is 1-1 in the bottom of the third.

UPDATE: Aquinas Institute had second and third with two outs in the bottom of the third inning, but Sundberg induced a fly out to centerfield. Top 4: Clarke 1, Aquinas Institue 1.

UPDATE: Clarke trails 2-1 going to the top of the fifth inning. Clarke didn't get a hit in the top of the fourth. Chris Bostick hit a two-out double in the bottom of the fourth for Aquinas and went to third on a balk. He scored on a dribbler down the first base line. Alan Komorowski was called safe on a close play at first as Sundberg took the throw. The umpire clenched his fist like he was going to call him out and then called him safe. Sounds like someone has a dinner reservation at Denny's.

UPDATE: Clarke loses, 3-1.

Massapequa suffers tough defeat in state semifinals

BY ADAM RONIS

The silence and look of dejection on the faces of the Massapequa baseball team said it all after a 4-3 loss in 11 innings to Mamaronek (Section I) this afternoon. It was a very tough loss for the Chiefs in the Class AA state semifinal at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton.

Massapequa kept finding a way to escape jams in extra innings, but couldn't in the 11th inning.
Michael Rosenfeld singled to leftfield with the bases loaded and none out scoring Gabe Klein to give defending champion Mamaronek the win in a rematch of last season’s championship game.

"It was a tough game," said Mike Mauri, who went 2-for-5 with an RBI. "One swing was going to change the game. We fought and tried our best."

It was a dicey situation for Massapequa (22-8) in the bottom of the ninth. After a one-out triple and two intentional walks to load the bases, Ryan Scarisbrick, who relieved starter Matt McCormick in the fourth, got a fly ball to shallow centerfield. Mike Campbell made a one-bounce throw to the plate and catcher Tony Abruzzino corralled the ball and blocked the plate and tagged out Taylor Mondshein to end the inning.

Mamaroneck (22-4-1) led off the 10th inning with two singles and a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third with one out. On a 2-and-1 count, Mamaroneck tried an unsuccessful suicide squeeze and Luke Glaser was tagged out before Joe Lipari induced a grounder to end the inning.

The Chiefs had a great opportunity in the ninth inning when Greg Muller doubled with one out and went to third on a bunt single from Nick Famulare, but Campbell grounded into a double play. Massapequa had just three hits off Matt McGovern in the final six innings.

McCormick started for the Chiefs and lasted three innings. He allowed one hit, two runs, walked four and hit a batter. He was relieved by Ryan Scarisbrick. He went six innings and allowed eight hits, one run and walked three -- all intentional.

"I just tried to throw strikes and my defense did the work," he said. "We thought we had a chance to win every inning. It didn’t work out as we planned."

Said Massapequa coach Tom Sheedy: "If Ryan threw five miles an hour faster, the Division I [schools] would love him. He’s a high school version of Greg Maddux. Ryan could handle pressure and that’s what he did."

Massapequa jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Vinny Caesar led off with a four-pitch walk and stole second base. Mauri singled up the middle to score Caesar and took second base on the throw home. Matt Hardy (2-for-5) ripped a single to right-centerfield scoring Mauri to make it 2-0 just three batters into the game.

Massapequa extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning. Rob Veltre crushed a line drive double to rightfield to start the inning and went to third on a grounder to shortstop. Mark Pagano reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Campbell hit a grounder to shortstop with the infield in and got the out at first. But first baseman Sean Hagan tried to get Pagano at second base and threw the ball into leftfield and Veltre scored.

McCormick allowed one base runner through the first two innings on a hits batsmen. He issued a leadoff walk in the third before getting the next two outs and then walked two more to load the bases. Then he got cleanup hitter Michael Rosenfeld to fly out to rightfield on the first pitch.

McCormick ran into more trouble in the fourth inning. He walked the leadoff batter and Luke Glaser hit a double to deep centerfield scoring Hagan to cut Massapequa’s lead to 3-1. It was the first hit of the game for Mamaronneck and ended McCormick’s day. Scarisbrick entered the game and got a fly out sneding Glaser to third. Sam Gruppo singled to make it 3-2 and Christiam Glaser singled to put runner s at first anf third. Klein reached on an error Gruppo scored to tie the score at 3.

The Chiefs had first and third with no outs in the fifth and didn't score. They had one runner in scoring position after the fifth inning.

Massapequa reached the state semifinals for the fourth consecutive season. The Chiefs won it in 2006 and have lofty expectations every season. Sheedy was in a tough spot trying to evaluate the season minutes after a tough loss, but he mulled it over and can't complain about the job his team did.

"If you go to the states, it has to be a good season," he said. "We expected to win. We’re very proud of our guys."

Oyster Bay ousts Keio, heads to state semifinals

BY COREY McLAUGHLIN

MAMARONECK -- Oyster Bay eliminated defending Class C state champion Keio Academy (Section I) with a 3-1 win on Wednesday in the state quarterfinals/Southeast Regional at Rye Neck High School.

The Baymen were focused on figuring out Keio starting pitcher Kenta Miyoshi, who hadn’t lost a game this season. They hadn't heard much about him, other than he had a nice curveball and has been very effective this year.

The first time through the lineup showed Oyster Bay's unfamiliarity. They had just one hit. But they altered thier hitting approach somewhat, locked in on fastballs, and the next time the top of the lineup came up in the third, they got results.

Alex Hudak scored Matthew Capozzo from second on a long, one-out double to left-centerfield, then Billy Clark crushed a belt-high fastball over the leftfield fence for a two-out, two-run homer that gave Oyster Bay a 3-0 lead.

Behind strong pitching from Chris Kelly and sturdy defense, the three-run rally was all Oyster Bay needed. Kelly, a sophomore, threw a four-hitter, allowed two walks and struck out five. His only setback came in the bottom of the third, when he walked Keio No. 9 hitter Yoshi Imaeda, who then scored following consecutive two-out singles to make it 3-1.

The defense was impressive behind him. Catcher Marc Douglas caught a base stealer at second to end the fifth and the Baymen turned a 5-4-3 double play to finish the sixth. Kelly induced three fly outs in the bottom of the seventh.

.... Some postgame reaction that won't make Thursday's Newsday.

Hudak, who went 2-for-2 with a walk, on Oyster Bay's hitting approach: “We had some tough at bats the first time thorugh, but we told everyone to stay up and we could get him the second time."

Oyster Bay coach Jay Davis: "We knew that this boy [Kenta Miyoshi] was very good. We knew he had a good curveball and was a pitcher. We wanted to do the little things, maybe bunt some people over and hope for a clutch it. We did that to a degree, but we didn’t cash in on it. The big blow was the two-run home run. Billy Clark has stepped it up consistently in the playoffs.”

Kelly on before the bottom of the seventh inning: “At the end, my arm and legs started to get tired, but I was like, I have 6,7,8 [hitters] coming up, and it's the last inning."

Oyster Bay will play in the state semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday at Binghamton University.

Southampton falls in Regional final

BY ADAM RONIS

One bad inning was all it took to end Southampton's great season. The Mariners committed three errors in the bottom of the sixth inning leading to four runs as Southampton lost to Dobbs Ferry (Section I), 5-1, in a Class B Southeast Regional final at Pace University in Pleasantville today. It was the first loss of the season against a Class B school for the Mariners.

"We made dumb mistakes," Southampton coach Ike Birdsall said.

Alex Antilety pitched well for the Mariners, but had two of the errors in the decisive sixth.

"I didn’t bring it out in the sixth inning," he said. "I was feeling good and we just made mental and fundamental mistakes in the sixth. I think everyone got shaken in the field. It was the worst way to lose it. They executed and made us make the plays and we didn’t. They did all the fundamentals."

Antilety went 5 1/3 innings and allowed four hits, walked two, allowed one earned run and struck out eight.

"He pitched a great game," Birdsall said. "He didn’t field his position as well as he normally does which is uncharacteristic of him. He had control and kept them off-balance all game."

Southampton (20-8), which won its first Long Island championship, didn't do much offensively against Sean LaFaye. The Mariners had just four hits and the first 11 batters were retired. Andrew Shimkus drove in the lone run in the sixth to tie the score at 1.

"He kept the ball low," Birdsall said of LaFaye. "He kept working quick. He didn’t let us get comfortable in the batters box. It was a great season. I just wish we had a couple of games left. We got to 20 wins. I wanted 23."

For more on the game, check Thursday's Newsday.

Massapequa wins fourth consecutive Class AA LIC

BY ADAM RONIS

For the fourth consecutive season Massapequa is the Long Island Class AA champion after beating North Babylon 8-3 at Farmingdale State tonight.

Massapequa took a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning, but as North Babylon has done all postseason, the Bulldogs rallied in the bottom of the inning and cut it to 4-3. The Bulldogs had the bases loaded and reliever Matt McCormick, who came in during the middle of the inning and allowed a walk and infield single, induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. He pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and didn't allow a run.

Massapequa added a run in the sixth and three in the seventh. With an early deadline tonight, there was no room for quotes in the paper. Here is some postgame reaction.

Massapequa coach Tom Sheedy: "We had a lot of two-out clutch hitting. We talked about North Bbaylon and how they came back all postseason. We said we can't let it happen. We took their best shot and added on runs."

Matt McCormick on getting out of the jam in the fifth: "I just wanted to throw strikes. I had a feeling they couldn't hit my fastball. I wanted to hold them down. I didn't want another rally from them. I threw a fastball on the outside corner and got the double play."

Massapequa's Vinny Caesar, who hit a two-run single to make it 3-1 in the fifth inning: "We didn't start well. We were too anxious. We were swing at balls. We stayed calm under presssure and started to hit."

On the three-run fifth inning: "That changed the whole momentum of the game. We were completely dead. We needed a spark."

On Massapequa's success: "The distinct thing about this team is we are talented and handle pressure extremely well. We don't beat ourselves."

Check out Tuesday's Newsday for more on the game.

Pike leads Southampton to Class B title

BY COREY McLAUGHLIN

Southampton pitcher Chris Pike was dominant in the Mariners' 2-1 win over Wheatley in the Long Island Class B championship at neutral-site Hauppauge. Pike, a junior righty who had already tossed a no-hitter this postseason, allowed four hits Monday and struck out 13 with only two walks.

With runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the seventh, Pike induced a fly out to right field, and Southampton won what is believed to be the first Long Island baseball title in school history, first-year coach Ike Birdsall said. This accomplishment comes after the Mariners won the first county title in program history in 31 years on May 26 against Southold/Greenport.

Alex Antilety provided the winning RBI, scoring Andrew Shimkus from second on a two-out single in the bottom of the third against Wheatley starter Chris Gould. Antilety said he didn’t think at the time that the hit would be the go-ahead one, but with Pike pitching, two runs were enough.

Southampton will face Dobbs Ferry at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Pace University in the state quarterfinal/Southeast Regional.

BY ADAM RONIS

Both pitchers were excellent in the Long Island Class A championship/Southeast Regional final at Farmingdale State today, but it was Clarke that came through with the timely hits in a 3-1 win over Islip. Clarke makes it first apperance in the state semifinals since 2005 when it won the state title. The Rams will play at 10 a.m. Saturday at Broome Community College in Binghamton.

Islip appeared in the state championship game the last two years.

Clarke righthander John Schilt, who will attend St. John's, threw a four-hitter, walked two and struck out six. Fairfield-bound Rob Iovino went 2-for-3 with two two-out RBI singles.

Islip starter Ed Macaluso threw a six-hitter, walked one, allowed two earned runs and struck out six. He retired the first eight batters he faced, including four strikeouts. Conner McCarthy lined a double to leftfield with one out in the bottom of the third inning and advanced to third on a fly out to centerfield. Kris Guy walked with two outs and Iovino singled to rightfield scoring McCarthy to give Clarke a 1-0 lead.

Schilt allowed one base runner in the first three innings on a walk. Islip tied the score at 1 in the fourth after Macaluso reached on an error and R.J. Going singled. With one out, both attempted to steal and Macaluso was thrown at third before Tom Kriss singled to score Going.

Clarke regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth. John Radice doubled with one out and scored on Ryan Sloane’s triple that landed on the warning track in centerfield. Clarke extended the lead to 3-1 with an unearned run in the fifth. Kris Guy reached on a two-base error with two outs and scored on a single by Iovino.
