Myron Rolle can beat up his fellow Rhodes Scholars
"I want to be a neurosurgeon and I want to help impoverished nations build up their vaccination programs."
That's not exactly the typical sound byte from an NFL-caliber football player, but it's a quote from Florida State safety Myron Rolle, who was just named a Rhodes Scholar.
This shouldn't come as a shock, though. Rolle is the most well-rounded blue chip recruit I've seen come out of high school this decade. I gushed over Rolle's achievements after his freshman year on this blog.
Rolle snapped off a 1340 on the SAT (out of 1600, not 2400) and was the lead in his school's version of "Fiddler on the Roof."
After finishing second on the team in tackles for a Top 15 defense, Rolle will head to England to study and skip his senior season in Tallahassee. Can you blame him?
Oh, he was also named a Lott Trophy finalist -- along with Brian Orakpo, James Laurinaitis and Aaron Curry. The Lott Trophy goes to a defensive player who excels on the field -- and the award incorporates character into its criteria.
How do you talk smack on the field to this guy?
Expect to see Rolle playing on Sundays sometime in the future. Then expect him to use much of that money to fund those aforementioned vaccination programs.
No matter what he does, his achievements on and off the field deserve mention and praise.
I just hope I hear an announcer one day say "Doctor Rolle in on the tackle."
