So Hawaii was a fraud after all...
By Adam Abramson
Not a bad way to start the new year, huh?
Michigan-Florida gave us one of the best football games of the season. Wisconsin-Tennessee wasn't bad either. We found out just how much Missouri wanted to be in the BCS. USC showed us how far its come the second half of the season. And we saw how much Hawaii didn't belong.
That was an embarrassing performance, but the writing was on the wall. It was actually a fun game to watch for a few reasons:
- 1. Georgia's defensive line had its way with the Hawaii big uglies. I'm not quite sure how Colt Brennan survived that hit on the goal line, which resulted in a fumble for a touchdown. While Georgia was celebrating in the end zone, up about four or five touchdowns in the third quarter, Brennan was writhing in pain on the ground.
- 2. Knowshon Moreno is a special back. Forget the touchdowns, his runs on first and second down were extremely impressive. I don't care who you are playing, some of the cuts and the vision he displayed is far beyond his years. Luckily, we get to enjoy is dominance for at least another two seasons. His freshman year numbers put him in some elite company (See: Herschel Walker, Emmitt Smith).
- 3. It made me feel good to be right for once this bowl season.
You didn't have to look far beyond the fact that Hawaii was noticeably the smaller team. Some matchups looked like man vs. boy. My heart really went out to Hawaii's offensive tackles, who had their hands full all night. Even Georgia's defensive backs dwarfed Hawaii's talented and speedy wide receivers.
Kudos goes to Mark Richt for preparing his team to execute on such a high level. Georgia's performance was textbook in everything from tackling to blocking. But once again, the most impressive aspect of last night's game was the Georgia pass rush, I can't imagine how much Brennan's internal clock was scrambled - he has less than two seconds on a good majority of his pass attempts.
I'll cut it here. The flight attendant is hollering at me to put my bag under the seat. I'm en route to (hopefully) sunny Florida for the Orange Bowl. I'll return soon.

Saw last night that Georgia might go into next year as the preseason #1. Not good for me considering the way their defensive front went after Brennan in the Sugar Bowl, and they will going to Tempe next year. Dennis Erickson, better figure out a way to block for the QB or it will be a long ugly night, like the Holiday Bowl, all over again.
Thought I got this in before, but I guess not. After watching Georgia (against Hawaii), and hearing that they might go into next season #1, I hope Coach Erickson gets that offensive line straighted out before they go to Tempe next fall, or it will be ugly just like the Holiday Bowl.
By the way Adam, my buddy that lives in Houston, not that he knows anyone or anything, surmises that SMU hiring June Jones is the first in a series of steps he thinks they are using to get into a bigger league. Makes sense, but I would think that that is a long way off. He is also guessing that once they build the football team to some competitiveness, that they might tryo to get the Big 12 to either make it the Big XII (XIII) ala the Big X or use subterfuge to get Baylor kicked out. Like I said, just his personal opinion. He has NO inside knowledge.
Oops.
