This just in: Another BCS controversy

By Adam Abramson

I only have about 30 seconds, but I have to post…

First things first: UGA should not play for the title. The Dawgs didn’t even win their division.

Now…Virginia Tech and LSU…

LSU stomped VT on 9/8...

But their latest loss dropped them behind Virginia Tech in the BCS. Why should they jump VT?

LSU has a loss to an unranked opponent, Virginia Tech has not.

Many are saying Virginia Tech is playing some of the best football in the country right now, and I agree. It’s not the same team that played in Baton Rouge in September.

Now, I do think that LSU will jump VT in the BCS and I do think that LSU is a better team, but why did they fall behind VT in the first place.

The two wins today by LSU and VT came against teams in the top 15 of the BCS (Boston College-11, Tennessee-14).

Am I making sense?

When it's all said and done, LSU will play Ohio State...

There will be a controversy. It’s time for a playoff.

If you do not win your league, there is no way you should get to play for the national championship. Sorry, there B&G, I was pulling for you. Another amazing night. Sadly, Ohio State looks like it will play for the title, against probably LSU, but at least LSU beat some good teams. Ohio State is where the controversy will be and they are not one of the top two teams in the country.

Okay, I'm going to repost here what I already sent to you earlier...

Oklahoma beat Mizzou, WVU loses -- 1 and 2 down. This puts OSU in the National Championship, whether or not they really deserve it. Georgia can't go to the NC because they didn't win their division or their conference. Using that same logic, Kansas doesn't go either, because they didn't win their division or conference. Which leaves Tech to play in the NC against OSU.

But wait. LSU stomped Tech earlier in the season, so LSU goes to the NC and plays OSU (partly because they beat VT, partly for the ratings/money/greed of the networks and bowls). Oklahoma is a stronger team than Tech, so they play for third against USC. (And I say "stronger" meaning in terms of ratings/following/clout/whatever.) This leaves Tech to play WVU in the Orange Bowl. LSU/OSU, Oklahoma/USC, and Tech/WVU, with the other leftover teams playing each other. And, no, Hawaii doesn't make it to a BCS game, either, win or lose (and I'm predicting a loss to Washington at 1:30am).

I agree with you Adam. LSU will jump VT and play for the title.

I also agree that it doesn't make total sense. If LSU was ranked behind VT last week, why should they jump VT this week? VT won a Championship Game (by a wider margin) against a team who was ranked higher in the BCS than the team LSU beat.

Obviously the voters thought VT should be higher than LSU this past week, and VT didn't do anything to lose that ranking.

The talking heads on ESPN are driving me NUTS right now. VT lost to LSU big time, I know that. But, at that time, LSU was playing perfect football; everyone was predicting an undefeated season for the Tigers. Didn't happen, a few injuries and they're back down to earth.

Now, for some reason, the fact that the Hokies lost to two teams that were ranked No. 2 at the time and are still in the rankings makes them not eligible for the title game? By that logic, VT would have been better off losing to East Carolina and beating LSU. Makes no sense. It should benefit us that one of our losses came to a team that's in the conversation. It should be looked down upon that LSU's losses came to teams that are not ranked right now.

Do I think Virginia Tech is one of the best two teams in the nation? Probably not. But right now, no one deserves to be called one of the best two teams in the nation except for maybe Hawaii.

One more thing: Virginia Tech never lost to a team that it was favored to beat. The only other team that can say that is Hawaii.

Jana - VT was favored over BC, even though BC was ranked higher. I believe the line was VT -3.5. But I agree with you ... in this BCS mess, why not VT? They didn't do anything to NOT earn that spot (and shouldn't be jumped by LSU or Oklahoma)

I agree that it makes no sense whatsoever that LSU should jump. If people truly thought OSU and LSU were 3 and 4, why weren't they being voted there before tonight?

However, I disagree that Georgia should not be there. True, they didn't win their division, but there's no rule that says they have to win their division to play for the national championship. If BCS wants to create such a rule, that's fine, but the way it's set up it simply makes sense that if 1 and 2 fall, 3 and 4 should be next in line. I don't believe that LSU's pretty weak performance over Tennessee was what made them jump so many spots.

There is no way that Kansas should be in one of these games over Missouri. Beat Oregon or USC and my Sun Devils would have taken care of their own business, that being said, Illinois with three losses???? I will be rooting for Hawaii. At least in this years' bowls there are some good sounding matchups.

well, I've come out of my state of mourning after three days.

I'm totally devastated by the events of last weekend. devastated, but not surprised.

The resulting BCS fallout was predictable. Why not? Everything else went 'live wire' this year, so why not the BCS games themselves.

The BCS is doing what it was intended to do, pitting #1 vs. #2.

After that, it's every bowl for themselves, and that means $$$ not on the field match-ups. Who travels? Who watches? Who raises the stature of our specific event?

Me? I'd have loved to see WVU in the BCS championship game. Failing that, WVU - Oklahoma should be fun to watch. WVU- VT would have been interesting as well. Hell, after the drubbing Pitt gave us last weekend, the game I'd most like to see is a rematch of Pitt - WVU, preferably played someplace cold and dismal, just like my mood.

There were three good results from the past weekend:

1) Wanny's contract being renewed - That insures that Pitt won't be a prominent college football program anytime soon.
2) The Mountaineers not playing in the BCS title game virtually assures White and Slaton return to WVU next year. I'm just going to be very sorry to see FB Owen Schmidt and LB Mark Magro go on to (hopefully) play on Sundays.
3) Jana gets to keep her couch for another year! :-)
