Week 5 Poll: Making sense of the mess

By Adam Abramson

gravitronspinning.jpgI'm pretty sure the Top 25 climbed into The Gravitron on Friday night and let it spin them silly until Auburn knocked off Florida late Saturday. What were we left with? A bunch of kids throwing up and a new look for the Top 25.

Before we dig in, a few things.

What do I think about freezing the kicker? Well, I think you have to try it if it's an unproven kid. You just don't know how much ice water is in his veins until he proves it's his football lifeline. Even at that, if it's a situation where a unit has to run out there and get a kick off in 15 seconds, I think you let the mayhem set in. I've seen coaches let the unit run out there, set up and call a time out just before the snap. Stupid move.

Another question for thought. Rutgers turns the ball over on downs. Then they let Lance Ball run it in for a touchdown with 2:04 making the score 34-24. When you have no timeouts, you have to let this happen, correct? Actually, I don't even know if this is a question.

Let's get into the poll. The Top 4 won't create any stir, but I have a feeling I'll ruffle some feathers after that. Yeah I know Auburn beat Florida, but I think if these two teams play 10 times, Florida wins eight of them. I don't know what some voters are thinking when they slot their teams, but I truly feel No. 7, one-loss Oregon, could beat South Florida. As could the other nine teams in front of the Bulls.

Clink on the link below the poll for thoughts.

  • How is Texas ranked higher than Kansas State in both the AP and Coaches' polls? Seriously. I want a voter to email me and tell me. I want to see copies of the ballots. Kansas State has beaten Texas two years in a row. Texas has looked horrible at times this season, prior to Saturday's beating. What is the logic here? Now, I know you're saying "Well, Florida beat Auburn and you don't even have Auburn ranked!" I know. But Auburn is extremely inconsistent and Florida is consistently dominant. This is their first slipup in a while. So, I'll call it a slipup until I see otherwise.

  • Yes, Wisconsin is at No. 13. When they prove they can play dominant football, I'll move the Badgers up.

  • We're going to talk about Purdue-Ohio State a lot this week. Huge game.

  • Who'da thunk Boston College, without Brian Toal, would be a Top 10 team. I started the Eagles at 25 before the season and I didn't even feel comfortable with that.

  • West Coast bias against USC in the other polls? I think so, Paul. But I was on the bandwagon before everyone else. Check the records.

  • Craig Sager cannot dress worth a lick.

Probably appropriate to have Florida State back in there. A close loss to Clemson to open the season does not make you a bad team.

I'm also interested to see the K-State/KU game this week. KU is one of those undefeated/unranked teams without any chance to prove themselves against an actual opponent.

Finally, just curious, what will it take for Michigan to get back into the rankings?

Adam, I have less of a problem with someone who had LSU first to begin with than someone who suddenly switched off of clear evidence that says otherwise. But what the heck do I know? I don't think they have polls until the middle of October, adnd that they should have a 16 team playoff.

Oh yeah, B.C. deserves ninth. They're coming off wins against perennial powerhouses Wake Forest, NC State (Both at home), Let's give them Georgia Tech, and Massachusetts. Next up are Bowling Green and winless Notre Dame.

How does anyone with a schedule like this deserve Top 10 status? Who's the BCS bowl game going to be against Cupcake State?

Didn't Boise State have to wait till week 7 or 8 last year to crack the Top 10 with a similar schedule?
